Top 10 Tuesday — Song Titles

10 Nov

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday challenge is a fun one — pick book titles that would make great song titles. Song titles and book titles have so much in common. They both are catchy and easy to remember and capture the essence of the book/song in one phrase. Song titles usually come from a line in the lyrics. Book titles often do the same thing — it’s fun when you come across the reference while reading. This week I went to my shelves for inspiration and found some books residing there that reference real songs for their titles, so I included some of those as well. Hope you find a book to love.

Top 10 Tuesday — Unique Book Titles

24 Oct

Besides the cover art, the title of a book is one of the most important means for getting a reader to pick it up. Sometimes the title is inspired by a quote within the book, other times it is a play on words featuring the subject. Whatever, the source, I admire the authors/editors/publishers’ creativity in coming up with the title. This week the folks at The Broke And The Bookish are challenging bloggers to share Unique Book Titles. Where do I start! This truly is a tough topic. I decided to go with book titles inspired by Art/Music/Literature. Some I have read; others are languishing on my shelves. All are worthy of a look!

Most of our television watching revolves around sports, sports news or just news in general. But my husband and I do enjoy a good cop show (or PI) — Law And Order, Criminal Minds, Bones, Rizzoli And Isles, The Closer, etc. Whether it involves local police, forensic scientists, or FBI profilers, we love a show that presents and solves a crime in under an hour! 😉 My television choices are influenced by books that I like, not the other way around. And I enjoy spending many hours solving the case! So here are some books you may enjoy if you share my viewing habits.

I love audiobooks! I started listening about 6 years ago when I traveled 4+ hours to my daughter’s college soccer games. They filled the tedious hours of driving alone. I got my husband hooked on audiobooks when we would go on road trips for football games. With Summer in full swing now, I thought it would be good to share my favorites. Audiobooks are perfect for car or plane trips or when you just want to relax and have someone read to you. 🙂 I also listen while exercising and doing chores, basically anytime when it is too cumbersome to hold a book! I went a bit over the top with my list — 20+ books! But I really liked them and just had to share.

TOP 10 20+ FAVORITE AUDIOBOOKS

While it is important to have a good story, a good reader/narrator is also important for a quality audiobook — timing and voices/accents are key. My husband and I got hooked on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot mysteries. But just any old narrator will not do; we have to have Hugh Fraser! Lucky for us, a ton of Poirot audiobooks featuring Fraser are available. He does an excellent job in making Poirot come to life. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Christie audiobooks run about 6+ hours, making them a perfect choice for listening with others.

Along with the Christie mysteries, I have listened to some other excellent books. They vary in length, but have a two things in common: excellent stories and excellent narrators. The following have something for everyone — suspense, mystery, history. There is even a classic! Check them out!

The Advocate by Randy Singer, narrated by David Cochran Heath

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, narrated by Zach Appleman

Center of Gravity by Laura McNeill, narrated by Lisa Larsen

A Cry from The Dust by Carrie Stuart Parks, narrated by Teri Clark Linden

Book Review: Just Before Midnight

20 Dec

jbm-final_Christmas Eve is the time to be at home enjoying the warmth and laughter of family, isn’t it? A couple in their late 60s faces the prospects of a first ever Christmas with no kids or grandkids in the house … An emergency room nurse handles every crisis at work with calm, but inside her emotions are roiling because she can’t get hold of her husband or her youngest son … Over the past two years he has lost his job, his house, his wife, and it feels like his kids are slipping away … Her first baby is scheduled to arrive in a few weeks, but with her husband still on duty in Afghanistan, she’s never felt so alone in all her life … Four individuals and families are trying so hard to grab hold of the spirit of Christmas that they can’t see they are about to run headlong into each other … just before midnight.

markMark Gilroy is the author of the #1 bestselling Kristen Conner Mystery Series. A veteran of the book publishing industry, he has packed boxes, served as executive vp and publisher over companies, edited manuscripts, made sales calls, created marketing plans, directed design and illustration, started companies, agented for authors, written award-winning video, and created advertising and catalog copy. He’s authored, edited, compiled, published, and ghost written books that have landed on an array of bestsellers lists, working with some of the biggest series and authors in the industry. He and wife Amy recently became empty nesters with the youngest of six off to college. They reside in Brentwood, Tennessee.

My Impressions:

Just Before Midnight, a Christmas novella by Mark Gilroy, was the December pick for By The Book. We met two nights ago to discuss the book. The consensus: it was okay. I think our biggest problem with the book was that it was novella length. It left us wanting more – more characterization, more detail in the plot, and most importantly, more story. We wanted to know what happens to the characters! If this book had been a full blown novel, we would have enjoyed it more.

There are four story lines in Just Before Midnight – an empty-nest couple experiencing a Christmas on their own, a young pregnant woman with a husband in Afghanistan, a down and out dad trying to rebuild his life and a nurse with a troubled teenager and out of work husband. All four story lines count down until they intersect right before midnight on Christmas Eve.

The characters’ stories are compelling. They all have worries and fears that they are facing. They all are going into a Christmas with uncertainty. The novella is fast-paced with twists and turns. And the story has a happy and unexpected ending. All pluses for our group. We just needed more! I guess that is good. We would love Just Before Midnight to be reworked into a novel.

If you can manage to squeeze some reading in before your own Christmas celebration, we really do recommend Just Before Midnight. Just know, you may want more!

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

Audiobook Review: Every Breath You Take

9 Jul

950681A high-profile murder tied to an online dating service has the Chicago news media buzzing. Who better to go undercover in the world of personal profiles and promising matches than an ace detective who is single and as attractive as she is tough? Detective Kristen Conner can’t figure out her own dating life, but she is about to get a crash course on finding true love – or at least a Friday night date – and become the object of a killer’s affections.

My Impressions:

Chicago P.D. detective, Kristen Connor, is back in M. K. Gilroy’s second novel, Every Breath You Take. (Read my review of Cuts Like A Knife HERE.) This time Kristen is working undercover as a paid date to discover who killed the son of an uber-wealthy Chicago businessman. Once again Kristen’s dedication and intuition solve the case. This book is a great read for those who like police procedurals and a tough and funny protagonist.

Kristen has just returned to Chicago after a summer of rehab and training with the FBI. Her love life is in question and she is glad to be back in Chicago where the familiarity of family and work keep her head in the game. Her first day plunges her into a new investigation where she must go undercover, this time as a high priced call girl. Kristen is not a girly-girl and her experiences in this new undercover job are hysterical. But of course Kristen will get her man.

I really love the characters created by M. K. Gilroy. Kristen Connor is by far the most fun and interesting, but her family and co-workers, including her fashionista partner, give a depth to this plot-driven series. Kristen’s love life is again a story line, but the murder investigation really takes center stage. And this book is a clean read — no worries about profanity or sex. So, if you like a quick-paced mystery, great characters and a story that keeps you guessing, then definitely check out Every Breath You Take.

Gilroy is working on book 3 in the series; I can’t wait!

Recommended.

Audiobook Review: Cuts Like A Knife

19 Jun

034697Detective Kristen Conner goes undercover to find a serial killer only to find herself as his next favorite target.

When Leslie Reed is found dead in her fashionable townhome, a red flag goes up in Washington, D.C. The FBI knows an elusive “organized killer” on a decade-long crime spree is at work again. The problem is the Feds have only one tenuous lead to assist local police in the manhunt … a most unlikely place the killer likes to find his victims.

Conner is light one her feet and packs a powerful punch – growing up in a cop’s home, intense hand-to-hand combat training, and not being able to shoot a handgun straight – all encourage that. Her life is built on faith and family: she only misses church when she is fighting with her mom and glamorous TV news reporter sister – or relentlessly tracking down a ruthless killer.

Kristen is a good cop but she’s never faced an adversary like the man the alternative press has dubbed the Cutter Shark. From the opening chase scene that leads her to a back alley where a punk with a knife awaits her, to the climactic scene where she goes one-on-one with the hauntingly familiar man who is killing innocent women in her town, Cuts Like a Knife, is loaded with action, humor, a dash of romance, and wry introspection through the voice of its irrepressible lead character.

A veteran of the book publishing industry, he has packed boxes, served as executive vp and publisher over companies, edited manuscripts, made sales calls, created marketing plans, directed design and illustration, started companies, agented for authors, written award-winning video, and created advertising and catalog copy. My Impressions:

Cuts Like A Knife was the last audiobook that I listened to, and I just could not put it down, er, turn it off! Mark Gilroy has created a complex character in Kristen Connor, a Chicago police detective who loves her family and her job. The almost-30 detective reminds me a little of Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich’s bestselling series and Gracie Lou Freebush from Miss Congeniality. But only a little. She is definitely her own woman, and this is a mystery/suspense series you don’t want to miss.

Detective Kristen Connor has an anger problem, at least that is what her partner, her boss and her family keep telling her. They also say she pushes people away, not ready to commit to a relationship. But Kristen is dedicated to her job and that job includes catching the Cutter Shark, a serial killer that is terrorizing the women of Chicago. Between coaching her nieces’s soccer team, attending AA meetings undercover, and juggling a confusing love life, Kristen follows the leads and her intuition in pursuit of the murderer.

Kristen Connor is a fun and funny character. She sees herself and others objectively, warts and all. She is tough, gritty and not one to be knocked down. I loved her outlook on life and her small prayers sent heavenward for those she meets and those she loves. There are three voices in the novel: Kristen, a vlogger and the killer. Each presents part of the story and just enough detail to keep the reader guessing along with the FBI and the Chicago PD. Gilroy has created a truly scary killer without graphic descriptions, a feat unto itself. But when the killer catalogs the tools of his trade, I got a big case of the creeps. A page-turner to the end, you will not figure out just whodunit. There is an added bonus for listeners of the audiobook — an interview with the author. And the narrator does a wonderful job as well.

If you are a fan of Steven James, Mark Bertrand or Brandilyn Collins, be sure to check out Cuts Like A Knife. I am currently listening to the second book in the Kristen Connor Series, Every Breath You Take, and am enjoying it as much as the first book.
