“That’s not what you told us yesterday. What did you tell Detective Ruiz?”

Kate’s head dipped, and her words seemed to catch in her throat. “I told him Peter cleaned me out. His leaving hurt me. It still stings, so I made it sound like Peter took my money and ran. But that’s not how it happened. I agreed to loan him what I had in savings and my retirement accounts. We were going to build a publishing company together, and we worked like fiends to make the dream come true.”

Steve took a full breath through his nose and blew it out of his mouth. “We need to stop. Call Detective Ruiz right now and set the record straight before you go to jail.”

“Jail? Why would I go to jail?”

Heather explained in her lawyer’s voice. “If he hasn’t already done it, Detective Ruiz will check your financial records and those of Peter. When he sees you and Peter had full access to each other’s accounts, he’ll be back to ask you why you said or implied that he cleaned you out without your knowledge.”

“I don’t think I used those same words.”

Steve shot back, “Quit playing games, Kate. You’re a suspect in a murder case. Go to your room, let the seriousness of your situation sink in for a few minutes, then call Detective Ruiz.”

Tears fell again as Kate made a quick escape to the relative safety of her bedroom.

“At least she didn’t slam the door this time,” said Steve.

Ryan shook his head, not bothering to hide his grin. “You’re something, Emma Hancock.”

Red tinged her cheeks and deepened the cold-nipped pink of her nose. She looked positively adorable. He tucked a flyaway strand of hair behind her ear and tugged her hat back in place. Her lips parted as she raised her questioning gaze to his.

He ran his thumb over her cheek bone, watching the color spread. “You amaze me. Intimidate me a bit, too. Mostly, though, I wish others could see what I’ve come to see this past week. You’re absolutely brilliant, and beautiful, and brave, and bright, and amazing at baseball.”

Her smile lit up her face, drawing his gaze to her lips. Should he? He leaned in and she didn’t pull away, so he moved closer still until he could feel her coffee-tinted breath. He paused, wanting to kiss her, yet not wanting to send her running. Not to mention they were on a public street.

She turned back to the sink as if the matter were all settled, triggering his ire as she continued to remove food from plates and drop them into the water. “So you see, that’s why I’m asking for time apart, Beck, to get our friendship back on track and help get over this annoying attraction that the play seemed to bring out.”

A nerve quivered clear to the back of Beck’s jaw. “I see—an ‘annoying attraction.’ In me, but not in you …” He plucked the dishtowel from the counter.

She gave a nervous shrug as she scrubbed a plate hard. “Well, no, not really. I mean, sure, maybe there was a tiny seed of attraction, Beck, but for me, it was mostly acting.”

Her words lit the fuse of his temper and his muscles instantly tensed—jaws, shoulders, fists, and neck all feeling the strain—a new development with Winnie of late. She continued on as if what he felt or thought didn’t matter, and he could feel his patience begin to crack …

“So, Beck, if you don’t mind, I think we should take a break from spending time together for maybe a month or so. You know, just some space to get our friendship back on track.” She peeked up out of the corner of her eye. “Don’t you think? Then you can just focus on teaching chess to Julia.”

A tic pulsed in his cheek. “Sure, Winnie. I’ll give you all the time you need—starting right now.” Hurling the towel onto the counter, he stalked toward the door, his brain doing a slow burn as he contemplated the idiocy of her rationale. 

“You’re in love with my daughter, Beck, so act like it. You have my permission—in fact, my utmost plea—to remind her every time you see her that you’re in love with her.”

Palm to the wood, he paused, anger suddenly surging through his veins like liquid fire. Doing an about face, he stalked back to where she stood hunched at the sink, head bowed and hands buried deep in the bubbles, perfectly still. 

A gasp left her lips as he whirled her around and kissed her soundly, his lips dominating hers until her moan gave way to let him in. Heat engulfed him while his mouth explored hers, teasing and tasting the only woman he ever wanted to love. Until he finally let go, so abruptly that she wobbled against the sink with eyes glazed and mouth agape. “Yeah,” he said as he delivered a slant of a smile with a stone cut of his jaw, “and that was acting too.”

As the evening drew to a close, Eve brought out a shallow bowl filled with smooth river stones and passed it around the circle.

“You don’t have to take one,” she said. “But if it helps, these are a reminder. That healing takes time, and that the hard places in life you’ve survived have actually shaped you into something strong and beautiful, even when you feel worn thin.”

Each woman took a stone.

Hope rolled hers in her palm. It was cool and grounding, its weight oddly reassuring. 

Eve lifted a cup filled with metallic ink markers. “If you feel ready, I invite you to write a word on your stone. Just one. A name you sense God might be speaking over you. Something true. Something healing. You can take it home and keep it visible. Let it remind you of who you really are.”

The women each selected a marker. One wrote “Free”. Another, “Seen”. A third, with trembling fingers, carefully wrote “Whole”.

Hope waited.

Watching them, she felt unsure. It felt too intimate, too exposing. So simple, but so weighty.

The silver pen hovered in her hand.

A word came. Unexpected. But steady. “Treasured.”

Not looked down upon.

Not just tolerated.

Valuable.

Wanted. Loved because she existed. Not for what she did or didn’t do.

Her throat tightened. She pressed the pen down and slowly wrote the word, her hand steadying as she shaped each letter.

The truck sped up, too close for comfort. Maya increased her speed, but the truck stayed on her tail.

Couldn’t be road rage. She hadn’t cut him off on the freeway. A slice of fear traveled down her spine as the truck became more aggressive. Was it the same person from last night?

The area became more rural and the road curvier the farther from the freeway they went. Farmland and pastures spread out on either side of the road. The truck’s motor revved as it loomed behind her. Maybe she should call for help? She reached for her phone in the holder on her dash, but a sudden jolt shuddered through the car, jerking her hand away.

The truck had hit her bumper. And he was coming back for more.

Maya sped up, but she was no match for the truck. He rammed her again, and she held tight to the steering wheel as her car veered off the shoulder. She corrected and pulled her SUV into the lane again, only to be hit again.

Up ahead, the bridge over Coley Lake came into view. Oh no. If he hit her again, she could go over the side. She pressed her gas pedal down as far as it would go, but the truck kept coming.

Another hit, then a loud pop. Her car swerved wildly to the right. Her tire had blown! Maya struggled to control the vehicle, but it went into a spin. Her hands slipped from the wheel as the SUV hit the guardrail and flipped over it.

My mother-in-law passed away last week. At 98 years of age she had a very full and spirit-filled life. A couple of days later we were walking through the home she lived in for over 70 years, seeing all the things she cherished and recalling the stories attached to those heirlooms.
