Happy Book Release — Medical Mystery

18 Jan

Join me in wishing Richard L. Mabry, MD a very happy book release day! His latest medical suspense novella, Medical Mystery is now available in paperback and on Kindle. Click HERE for a purchase link. All the details about the book are below.

When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem.

The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane’s idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar.

The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe.

Dr. Richard Mabry is a retired physician, now writing “medical mysteries with heart.” In addition to his medical books, he is the author of one non-fiction book, several novellas, and thirteen published novels. His novels have been finalists for the Carol Award, the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award, the Reviewer’s Choice Award, the Selah Award, and others.
He and his wife live in north Texas. In addition to regular efforts (thus far unsuccessful) to improve his golf game, he spends much of his time trying to convince his family that sitting at his desk staring into space does indeed represent work.

Author: Jerusha Agen
Publisher: SDG Words
Release Date: November 8, 2021
Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

The greatest threat to this K-9 team is the one they don’t see coming.

Cora Isaksson’s guilt has shadowed her life ever since drugs ensnared her brother and he disappeared. When Bradley suddenly returns, Cora and her narcotics detection K-9 are thrust into a battle against the drug cartel that wants him back.

DEA Special Agent Kent Thomson has his own personal reasons for bringing justice to the cartel. Cora and her drug-sniffing K-9 will only get in his way. Or are they assets that will enable him to right the wrongs of the past?

When the cartel targets Cora, she and Kent join forces with her teammates at the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency to end the cartel before it ends her. They’re prepared for danger, but when more lives than their own hang in the balance, can they trust God for the rescue that’s out of their reach?

EXCERPT

Cora’s pulse jerked with her arm when Jana tugged hard to the right. The golden retriever never pulled on her leash unless she caught scent of one of two things—narcotics or a human in need of rescue.

Jana tugged toward a black suitcase parked upright next to a man in the baggage claim of Minneapolis International Airport.

“Get that dog away from my luggage.” The middle-aged, heavyset man had a smudge of dark hairs on his head and a long, sagging mustache that shaped his mouth into a severe frown.

Cora’s mind raced. She and Jana were off the clock, finished logging in their hours searching for narcotics at Departures. The usual TSA officer who accompanied her had left, and Cora had handed in her radio for the day.

But Jana sat next to the man’s suitcase and aimed her big brown eyes up at Cora.

She’d found drugs.

Never Too Late JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Never Too Late by Susan L. Tuttle, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Never Too Late

Title: Never Too Late
Series: Along Came Love #3
Author: Susan L. Tuttle
Publisher: Iron Stream Media
Release Date: November 2, 2021
Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance

Once, her art brought her fame. This time will it bring her love?

Widowed homemaker Rachael Stark isn’t quite sure what comes after her only child leaves for college. To fill her suddenly quiet hours and scrawny bank account, she needs a job. But painful memories prevent her from resurrecting her former art career, and motherhood isn’t much of a résumé. When her best friend needs help recovering from a gunshot wound that occurred in the line of duty, she is there. Finally, someone to take care of.

Evan Wayne won’t let his injury keep him from being a police officer. His dedication to protect the innocent stems from the guilt he carries over having failed his childhood friend. What he needs now is to recover and get back on the streets. Instead, he’s handed a myriad of light-duty tasks by his captain―one of which involves heading up the department’s entry into the town’s annual mural contest. He’s not an artist, but he definitely knows one. And he’ll take any excuse to spend more time with her.

When Rachael agrees to paint for Evan, she never expects to also be drawn into finding answers for the mother of a missing child. As the two friends work side by side on the mural and the case, their feelings move beyond friendship. But with Evan unwilling to leave his dangerous job, and Rachael unwilling to risk another loss of a loved one, their fears may paint over the promise of a beautiful future together.

EXCERPT

He strolled away from her and stopped by a painting of a massive dahlia, one of her favorite flowers. This had been her first attempt at something so detailed. She’d used saturated merlot tones with highlights of claret along the dips and curves of its individually cupped leaves. Chris challenged her to create it—and she had, with Gavin at school and Brianna napping nearby. Her agent, Lanette, took her on because of the promise she saw there. And Jonah hung it when he purchased her the space.

Evan peered over his shoulder at her. “I can see why they called you the next Georgia O’Keefe.”

“You actually know who she is?”

“Sure. A famous painter known for her enlarged flowers.” He turned. “I may have looked her up after googling you and seeing the comparison. Personally, I think yours are better.”

She was a little stuck on the fact he’d googled her and a whole lot stuck on the fact he liked her old paintings. “You may be a little biased.”

His smile fired off nerves inside like those crazy trick candles. She kept trying to snuff out the sparks, but they kept firing right back up. “Maybe.”

Picture Imperfect JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Picture Imperfect by Alyssa Roat & Hope Bolinger, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Picture Imperfect

Title: Picture Imperfect
Series: Roseville Romances #1
Author: Alyssa Roat & Hope Bolinger
Publisher: Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date: November 5, 2021
Genre: Christian, Contemporary Romance

Can a struggling career woman and a procrastinating artist save a beloved nonprofit?

Aspiring novelist Caroline Penn expected a promotion, not a picture book assignment. But when her employer, the non-profit Helping Hope, runs into financial trouble, this book might be the solution. With the company struggling to stay afloat, she and the illustrator will need to collaborate on a strict deadline—no problem for a workaholic like Caroline, right?

Andy Jackson, a “starving” artist, pays the bills by taking on graphic design gigs, but his perfectionism gets in the way. If only he could focus on a project for once, perhaps he could achieve his dream to make art for children for a living.

When the two are thrust together to create a book, Caroline can’t seem to write for children, and Andy can’t meet a deadline to save his life. As time ticks down to release day, the two must face their pasts and insecurities. If they can avoid strangling one another for long enough, they may just bring to the table what the other is missing.

If not, the fate of their careers—and a beloved nonprofit—hangs in the balance.

EXCERPT

Maisie appeared to absorb his words for a moment. Then she nodded and her face lit up again. “Feeling daunted?”

“You could say that.” He chuckled.

“I’ll tell you someone else who was hesitant about a big task before him.” She gestured to the Moses mural. “Imagine standing in front of that Red Sea. Or in front of Pharaoh telling him to let the Israelites go. No wonder he came up with a thousand excuses as to why he wasn’t up for the task.”

And yet, all those things still happened. The Red Sea parted, and the Israelites were freed.

Hope lit a beacon in his chest.

EXCERPT

Deep Haven in November was like a sad old man fighting for his life and losing.

Nick Dahlquist might not be an old man at the ripe old age of thirty, but it was hard not to feel like one with his throbbing leg. He looked up at the bleak sky. Sunlight was hemorrhaging fast. What was left spilled over the ridge onto his hometown and the bay below. Soon darkness would swallow it too. The wind off Lake Superior bit at Nick’s exposed ears. His thermal shirt and down vest did little to fight it off.

If November was going to be this cold, it could at least have the decency to throw a little snow down.

Because without snow, his sled team was stuck.

Kinda like his life.

And if he wanted to get out of this rut, he’d need a good foot or two of the white stuff soon. Then he could start training in earnest for the Mush Puppies dogsled race. Thanksgiving weekend would be here in just under four weeks and he and his dogs needed to be ready. Sponsors would be watching the first race of the season, and if he had any hope of going back to the Iditarod come March, Nick and his team had some convincing to do.

He released a long breath before yanking open the VFW door. The cheers and the smell of onion rings that used to beckon good times hit him in the face as he walked in.

These days he’d be okay if he never ate another VFW burger again. The flavor carried too many memories.

So why had he agreed to meet Darek Christiansen here?

He walked farther in, and aside from the people seated at the bar, he counted five long tables arranged in two rows, each with a bell in the middle all set for Trivia Night. The seats were filled with familiar faces, familiar teams with names like The Facts & The Curious, Nerd Herd, the Smartinis, Les Quizerables, and his old team, which had split off the Fellowship of the Quiz group when they grew too big to fit around one table. They were now the Huskaloosas, named after their high school mascot.

Chatter and laughter he’d once joined in on now grated against his nerves. The Huskaloosas were missing a few players, but his cousin Peter was still there with his girlfriend, Ronnie Morales, and her little brother, Tiago. Beth Strauss and Lena Larson were at the table, Ree Zimmerman and Seth Turnquist had their heads together, but no one was scribbling names down.

And of course, they were there. Also, together.

Nick watched Vivien Calhoun. Tall, willowy, brunette, blue eyes that dazzled on stage and a smile that turned him inside out. She looped her arm around Boone and tossed her hair back over her shoulder. Nick could practically smell her perfume. She turned her head toward him. He looked away before she caught him staring.

Nick should’ve insisted on meeting somewhere else. Or he could’ve ignored the resort owner entirely.

Well, not really. He could only evade so many messages from a guy like Darek Christiansen, especially with the news yesterday from Licks and Stuff saying they were pulling their sponsorship due to budget cuts. Nick couldn’t afford to lose any more support. Not with the foreclosure notice he’d received today.

His eyes adjusted to the dim lighting and made out Darek’s tall form and dark hair at a table in the back. The man, who was wearing an Evergreen Resort hoodie, dwarfed the blue plastic chair he sat in as he nursed a bottle of root beer. At least he sat as far as he could from the Trivia Night event. Nick tucked his head and scooched past his old team without anyone noticing.

Now it was show time. Nick plastered on a big grin. “Hey, Darek. You folks staying warm enough out there at the Evergreen?”

Darek set down his bottle. “Yeah, but can you believe this cold snap? Sure could use some snow cover before our septic systems freeze.”

Nick nodded. “No kidding.”

As soon as he sat down, their usual server, Melissa Ogden, approached in her typical tight jeans, short dark hair, and a lot of makeup. He had played basketball with her older brother Anthony. But she must’ve been five or six years behind him in school.

“Hey, Nick. It’s been a while. What can I get ya?”

“Just coffee.”

Darek balked. “Coffee? Aren’t you gonna eat?”

“Nah, not hungry.”

“Suit yourself.” Darek turned to Melissa. “I’ll take a double cheeseburger and fries. And another root beer.” After she left, his attention swung back to Nick. “I suppose growing up in the restaurant biz, a simple burger doesn’t cut it anymore, huh?”

That wasn’t the case, but no need to get into it. Unlike Darek, Nick had no desire or skill to take over the family business. The thought of being stuck inside the hot kitchen of his parents’ restaurant all day long almost suffocated him. “I’m not too picky most of the time. Just full tonight.”

Darek stared for a beat. “You okay, Nick?”

Nick’s smile must’ve slipped. He shored it back up. “I’m great.”

Top 10 Tuesday — First Character Lines

9 Nov

The last 2+ weeks have been a whirlwind around here with both expected and unexpected travel. I have been out of town many more days than at home — lots of catching up to do! All that to say I have chosen the easy way out with my TTT list. Memorable character quotes is being twisted to a variation on first lines — the first sentence uttered by a character. All the books featured today are on my near future TBR list. I hope you find a book that piques your interest.

For more memorable character quotes, check out That Artsy Reader Girl.

Top Character First Lines

“And King David, a warrior poet, cried out to God, ‘Out of my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.'”

“You’ll never believe it, but I discovered two more diaries!” Miss Cora’s voice wavered, but even at ninety-two it had not lost its cultured tone.

“Thanks for coming with me today. I needed this.”

“What are you doing, Miss Travers?”

“We shouldn’t be doing this.” Lindsey Waters whispered as she stood in the dark hallway next to her sometimes friend, sometimes enemy, and all-the-time troublemaker.

“I’m green with envy! Paris is the most beautiful city in Europe!”

“It will be over soon, little Hebrew,” said the man with painted lips, blood-red and curving with false tenderness.

“Seif, you will send your child to this school?”

The last child, a girl with wide brown eyes and a riot of red curls trailed her hand over the robe. “It’s softer than I thought it’d be.”

“You’ve got manure in your hair, Gerrit,” Luisa whispered, her Italian accent still strong even after thirty years in the States.

Happy Release Day! — Every Word Unsaid

2 Nov

Happy release day to Kimberly Duffy! Her latest historical novel, Every Word Unsaid is now available. Duffy’s novels always capture the time and place with detailed descriptions and careful research. I can’t wait to start reading this book. Find out more below.

Augusta Travers has spent the last three years avoiding the stifling expectations of New York society and her family’s constant disappointment. As the nation’s most fearless–and reviled–columnist, Gussie travels the country with her Kodak camera and spins stories for women unable to leave hearth and home. But when her adventurous nature lands her in the middle of a scandal, an opportunity to leave America offers the perfect escape.

Arriving in India, she expects only a nice visit with childhood friends, siblings Catherine and Gabriel, and escapades that will further her career. Instead, she finds herself facing a plague epidemic, confusion over Gabriel’s sudden appeal, and the realization that what she wants from life is changing. But slowing down means facing all the hurts of her past that she’s long been trying to outrun. And that may be an undertaking too great even for her.

Kimberly Duffy is a Long Island native currently living in Southwest Ohio. When she’s not homeschooling her four kids, she writes historical fiction that takes readers back in time and across oceans. Her books feature ahead-of-their-time heroines, evocative settings, and real-life faith. Kimberly loves trips that require a passport, recipe books, and practicing kissing scenes with her husband of 20 years. He doesn’t mind.
