Every month I come up with a If You Liked post for the novel my book club read. I try to list at least 3 books that have something in common with our monthly selection — setting, theme, historical elements, etc. I have shared this before on TTT, but I have some new recommendations. My list includes several genres — something for everyone. I hope you find a book to love! 🙂

While I liked Trial And Error by Robert Whitlow (and so did my husband), my book club had mixed reviews. Some found it slow; others thought its ending was a bit too tidy. For some there just wasn’t enough action. I loved the characters and felt that Whitlow presented them in a realistic manner. For those of you who did like Trial And Error, I have some more reading recommendations. All of these books deal with with missing persons and/or human trafficking as does the main plot of Trial And Error.

While novella collections are not a usual choice for my book club, we love the authors represented in Cost of Betrayal. Dee Henderson, Lynette Eason, and Dani Pettrey are all favorites. There was no consensus on which of the stories we liked the best — each had its fans. So what to read next? How about more of the same. Here are some books written by these three talented authors. Note: There is a recent release and soon to be released book on the list.
Sins of The Past by Dee Henderson/Lynette Eason/Dani Pettrey
In Dee Henderson’s Missing, a Wyoming sheriff is called to Chicago when his elderly mother goes missing. Paired with a savvy Chicago cop, the two realize her disappearance is no accident, and a race against the clock begins.
Dani Pettrey returns to Alaska with Shadowed, introducing readers to the parents of her beloved McKenna clan. Adventure, romance, and danger collide when a young fisherman nets the body of an open-water swimming competitor who may actually be a possible Russian defector.
Lynette Eason’s Blackout delivers the story of a woman once implicated in a robbery gone wrong. The loot has never been found — but her memory of that night has always been unreliable. Can she remember enough to find her way to safety when the true culprit comes after her?

I have only been to Illinois once, and that trip was just to Chicago. And while we had a great time, I know there is much more to Illinois than the Windy City! Big cities, farms, and rich natural resources, not to mention a Great Lake and the Mississippi River, make Illinois a very diverse state. The Land of Lincoln became the 21st state in the early 1800s and has since grown to economic importance.
My reading road trip list also reflects the diversity of the state and includes several genres. I hope you find one to transport you to Illinois!

A powerful historical drama based on the story behind the hymn ‘It Is Well With My Soul.’ “Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say; It is well, it is well with my soul….” How can a man who has lost so much write such words? But before they can board the SS Ville du Havre in New York, Spafford receives a telegram that will delay his crossing and change his life forever. When tragedy brings him to his knees, Spafford writes a poem on the back of a telegram — words that have become a hymn of hope for millions facing sorrow.

Printed Letter Book Shop by Katherine Reay
One of Madeline Cullen’s happiest childhood memories is of working with her Aunt Maddie in the quaint and cozy Printed Letter Bookshop. But by the time Madeline inherits the shop nearly twenty years later, family troubles and her own bitter losses have hardened Madeline’s heart toward her once-treasured aunt—and the now struggling bookshop left in her care.
While Madeline intends to sell the shop as quickly as possible, the Printed Letter’s two employees have other ideas. Reeling from a recent divorce, Janet finds sanctuary within the books and within the decadent window displays she creates. Claire, though quieter than the acerbic Janet, feels equally drawn to the daily rhythms of the shop and its loyal clientele, finding a renewed purpose within its walls.
When Madeline’s professional life falls apart, and a handsome gardener upends all her preconceived notions, she questions her plans and her heart. Has she been too quick to dismiss her aunt’s beloved shop? And even if she has, the women’s best combined efforts may be too little, too late.
In Dee Henderson’s novella Betrayed, Janelle Roberts is freed — thanks to people she doesn’t know — after serving six years of a twenty-year sentence for a murder she did not commit. But a murderer is still at large, and Janelle needs to be somewhere safe with someone she can trust. She may not survive another betrayal.
In Dani Pettrey’s Deadly Isle, Tennyson Kent is trapped on the isolated island of her childhood by a storm surge, and she is shocked when the typically idyllic community turns into the hunting grounds of a murderer. Cut off from any help from the mainland, will she and first love Callen Frost be able to identify and stop a killer bent on betrayal before they become the next victims?
In Lynette Eason’s Code of Ethics, trauma surgeon Ruthie St. John saves the life of Detective Isaac Martinez. My Impressions:
My book club chose The Cost of Betrayal, the 3-novella collection by romantic suspense authors Dee Henderson, Dani Pettrey, and Lynette Eason, for a number of reasons. We love all three of these authors, their books being some of our favorites in the romantic suspense genre, and we wanted to try something a little different. We have never chosen to discuss a novella collection before. I presume we will have a mixed bag of opinions — and a lively discussion!
All three stories in The Cost of Betrayal are classic examples of the three authors’ works. Betrayal by Dee Henderson features fan favorite characters Ann and Paul Falcon as they delve into a closed murder case. This is more of a mystery, than suspense. I liked the various scenarios that the characters examine for what really happened years before. Deadly Isle by Dani Pettrey is almost all action with murders, storms, and danger around every corner. The author introduces new characters in this story. Lynette Eason returns to her Blue Justice series with the novella, Code of Ethics. Dr. Ruthie St. John, the only non-law enforcement member of the large St. John family becomes embroiled in a life and death case with Det. Isaac Martinez. The sparks fly, and the twists and turns are rapid.
The Cost of Betrayal is a good choice for fans of romantic suspense/mystery who want a quick and easy reading option. Because of their novella length, the stories take off at a brisk clip without a lot of backstory or character development. However, each one was entertaining and perfect for an evening escape.
School is in full swing and college football has kicked off — it must be September. While the temperatures here in the Sunny South are still hovering in the 90s, we are all dreaming of cooler weather and fall leaves. While I won’t get my hopes up for snuggling under a blanket just yet, I can be assured of snuggling with a great book with my book clubs’ selections. Have you read either of these two? We would love to know your thoughts.

The King’s Mercy by Lori Benton
When captured rebel Scotsman Alex MacKinnon is granted the king’s mercy — exile to the Colony of North Carolina — he’s indentured to Englishman Edmund Carey as a blacksmith. Against his will Alex is drawn into the struggles of Carey’s slaves–and those of his stepdaughter, Joanna Carey. A mistress with a servant’s heart, Joanna is expected to wed her father’s overseer, Phineas Reeves, but finds herself drawn instead to the new blacksmith. As their unlikely relationship deepens, successive tragedies strike the Careys. When blame falls unfairly upon Alex he flees to the distant mountains where he encounters Reverend Pauling, itinerate preacher and friend of the Careys, now a prisoner of the Cherokees. Haunted by his abandoning of Joanna, Alex tries to settle into life with the Cherokees, until circumstances thwart yet another attempt to forge his freedom and he’s faced with the choice that’s long hounded him: continue down his rebellious path or embrace the faith of a man like Pauling, whose freedom in Christ no man can steal. But the price of such mercy is total surrender, and perhaps Alex’s very life.
This week Top 10 Tuesday is all about the tropes — common themes or devices used in literature. My list is all about plot devices that define a story line, such as rags to riches. While many turn their noses up at tropes, terming them cliches, there is a reason they are used over and over — they are stories readers want to read! My list contains the very common (and popular) tropes that were excellently used in the books mentioned. And as you can see, tropes can be used in any genre — romance, suspense, historical, and fantasy. Hope you find a book you will love!

Fall may be around the corner, but here in middle Georgia the forecast is definitely all-Summer! 🙁 With temps in the mid-90s it’s hard to get into the whole changing leaves/pumpkin spice/snuggly sweater frame of mind. But I can always dream and read! That’s where my Fall TBR comes into play. Check out That Artsy Reader Girlfor more bloggers’ Fall reading lists.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Title:The Cost of Betrayal Authors: Dee Henderson, Dani Pettrey, Lynette Eason Publisher: Bethany House Release Date: September 4, 2018 Genre: Novella Collection / Romantic Suspense
FAITH WILL BE TESTED. TRUST SHATTERED. THREE BESTSELLING ROMANTIC SUSPENSE WRITERS REUNITE FOR NOVELLAS OF DEADLY BETRAYAL.
Dee Henderson – “Betrayed”
After serving six years of a twenty-year sentence for a murder she didn’t commit, Janelle Roberts is finally freed. But the truth is still waiting to be discovered, and a murderer is still at large. Janelle needs to be somewhere safe with someone she can trust. She may not survive another act of treachery.
Dani Pettrey – “Deadly Isle”
Tennyson Kent is trapped on the isolated island of her childhood by a storm surge, and she is shocked when the typically idyllic community turns into the hunting grounds of a murderer. Cut off from any help from the mainland, will she and first love Callen Frost be able to identify and stop a killer before they become the next victims?
Lynette Eason – “Code of Ethics”
When Detective Isaac Martinez lands in the ER with a gunshot wound, he pulls through thanks to trauma surgeon Ruthie St. John. But as the witness to a crime and possible corruption, Martinez is at risk from someone intent on silencing him–and those around him–forever. When he barely survives another attack while recovering, both he and Ruthie must flee, trying to outrun deadly killers while locating the evidence they need to end the danger.
Good people committed murder. Paul had long since accepted that. He’d put a significant number of them in prison. But a good person didn’t often plan the murder in advance, requiring rapid decisions on what to do afterward, leading to mistakes, panic. Janelle had not planned what happened that night. That was what had clicked. Paul leaned back to ponder that thought.
Guilty people gave themselves away — sweating, minds racing, desperate to get rid of the evidence, establish an alibi, spin a story out to friends to cover the time period. Good people who committed murder were unable to walk away and show no signs of it. As an investigator, you didn’t make a decision based on behavior. You worked from the evidence. But the evidence backed up behavior. He had two people in this case file, and they were handling events very differently.
He accepted the bowl of ice cream from his wife, waited till she was seated. “Ann, your best evidence that Tanya — or someone else — did this murder is Janelle’s behavior. The patrol officer found Janelle at home wearing sweats, eating chocolate ice cream out of the carton, and methodically taking apart a scrapbook full of pictures of her with Andrew. The search of her home yielded some things of Andrew’s: jacket, CDs, and books haphazardly thrown together in a box in the hall. Janelle had been purging her apartment of her boyfriend when the patrol officer knocked on her door.”
He saw the surprise cross her face.
“I hadn’t thought about that specifically.”
“Character tells. It always does. Janelle isn’t guilty of this. The patrol officer knocks on her door, and she’s clueless that her boyfriend has been hurt, let alone is dead. If it was the detectivewho knocked on her door and saw for himself what she was doing, her shock and the tears, he would have kept pushing until he could find another answer.
“But by the time Janelle has been driven in the back of a squad car to the beach, has seen all the flashing lights and cops and medical examiner vehicles, she’s quiet and wound tight and confused, desperately trying to sort out what happened to the man she loves after she left him. The detective sees someone saying she didn’t do it, but missed seeing the physical innocence, that clueless expression that would have told him she was telling the truth. He knows they had a fight, there’s blood on her shoes, the knife she can’t produce is consistent with what stabbed Andrew—he had to go with what was there in front of him. The detective bought the frame.”
“You believe me?”
“Yes.”
Relief flowed across her face.
