Read A Romance Month — Romantic Suspense

15 Aug

Happy Tuesday! I, along with quite a few other bloggers, had trouble coming up with books for this week’s TTT topic — characters that should team up. With all that I have had going on in the past couple of weeks, my brain just couldn’t handle the challenge. 😉 So I am continuing my Read A Romance series for TTT today.

August is read a romance month (like we need a reminder), and today I am focusing on my favorite romantic suspense authors. I love a good mystery/suspense, and I love trying to figure out just whodunit with engaging characters. The books listed are the first book of the authors’ most recent series. Hope you find one to love.

For bloggers who stayed on topic, check out That Artsy Reader Girl.

Excerpt

Death. It permeated her hair, her skin. She wanted to crawl out of it, but there was nowhere to go.

He depressed the accelerator to the floor board, putting distance between her and the body. But more was required.

Infinitely more.

She feared she’d never outrun it.

The booming ricochet of the shotgun still rang in her ears.

Stop! She scratched at them. Why wouldn’t it stop?

Cold slithered down her face.

“You’re clammy.” He chucked a rag at her.

Her stomach churned. She pressed the back of her hand against her mouth.

He flew over the hill.

“Slow down,” she eked out. “You’ll get us pulled over.”

“Yeah.” He chuckled. “If you get arrested, he’ll know you didn’t follow the plan. Then you’ll be as good as dead.”

She already was. It was just a matter of time before he figured it out and came for her.

My Impressions:

Fans of Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series will be delighted with The Shifting Current, a novella focusing on Logan and Emmy. The two leave the Atlantic coast to go to cowboy country New Mexico. But it is not a pleasure trip. Logan’s grandfather, Colt, is murdered and the two join the investigation. The tension is high and the case takes on some twists, but Logan and Emmy are determined to find out who the killer is. There is also some help from coded messages left by Colt — I liked that element of the story a lot. Coming in at 200 pages, the suspense takes off fast. As does the romance between the two. They have been friends for a long time and both have strong feelings for the other, but their relationship rockets as the suspense builds. It’s believable because of their background, and I was glad to see them own up to their feelings, not try to down play them. Logan does have baggage, but with Emmy’s guidance he comes to trust in God’s love and His redemption.

If you are looking for a fast-paced page-turner for a weekend read, then The Shifting Current is a good choice.

Recommended!

Audience: adults.

Top 10 Tuesday — Seriously Bad Bad Guys

1 Nov

This week’s TTT topic, bad guys you love to hate, was a no-go for me. I read a lot of suspense, and I usually cheer when the bad guys die or at least get put in jail. 😉 These books generally feature serial killers, terrorists, drug/human traffickers — basically seriously bad bad guys. I did a search of my posts with bad guys and creep-factor as the search terms. Yikes! I found a few that won’t give you nightmares, but some need a nightlight on as you read. I hope you find a book with bad guys to love.

If You Liked … Sunrise

29 Jul

My book club members liked Sunrise by Susan May Warren. They liked the Alaskan setting, the emphasis on bear research, and the action/adventure. The romance was also a contributing factor. 😉 If you liked it too, I have a couple of reading recommendations for you.

Adventure/Suspense in Old Alaska

In The Shadow of Denali by Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse

Cassidy Ivanoff and her father, John, work at the new and prestigious Curry Hotel outside Mt. McKinley. While John will be expedition and wilderness exploration guide for the wealthy tourists, Cassidy has signed on as a cook’s assistant. Both are busy as the hotel prepares to welcome the president of the United States on his way to drive in the golden spike to officially complete the railroad.

Allan Brennan travels to the Curry Hotel to be an apprentice of a seasoned Alaska mountain guide. Ever since his father’s death climbing Mt. McKinley, he’s worked to earn enough money to make the trek to the Alaska territory himself. His father’s partner blames their guide for the death of his father, but Allan wants to find the truth for himself. He finds an unlikely ally in Cassidy, and as the two begin to look into the mystery, they suddenly find that things are much less clear, and much more dangerous, than either could ever imagine.

Bears!

“You hide behind your camera instead of stepping out and engaging life with both hands. You’re so afraid you’ll fail at something, you won’t even try.”

For some people, Alaska is a breathtaking wilderness adventure, full of light and beauty. For Haley, it is a dangerous world of dark dreams and tortured memories. On the surface, she’s here to document wildlife activist Kipp Nowak’s bear encounters. But her real reason is to unearth the truth about a past murder. The suspense mounts when another body turns up, and Haley begins to wonder if the tragedies she experienced in the past are connected to the dangers and mysterious incidents of the present.

From behind her camera, Haley observes it all, including Tank Lassiter, the wildlife biologist who has been forced to lead Kipp and his team into the Alaskan backcountry. As she watches him with his work, she feels a growing attraction. It will take great courage and faith to confront the truth she once ran away from. Before it’s over, Haley may be viewing herself from an entirely new angle.

Alaska Twilight is the story of a young woman’s emergence from the shadows of past sorrow into the light of forgiveness and grace.

Sled Dog Races!

Sabotaged by Dani Pettrey

Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now, working together as search-and-rescue for Alaska’s arduous Iditarod race, a growing attraction seems to be forcing aside old arguments. Then Reef catches Kirra sneaking from camp in the middle of the night.

Kirra’s uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing: Frank’s daughter has been kidnapped. Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl’s life–but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.

Happiest of release days to Dani Pettrey. Her latest novel in the Coastal Guardians series, The Deadly Shallows, is now available! I devoured an early copy of this book and can recommend it! Haven’t read the first two books? Not a problem. Get them all and enjoy some great binge reading!

A deadly attack.
A stolen weapon capable of immense destruction.
A painful secret that threatens to tear two hearts apart.

CGIS Agent Noah Rowley is rocked to the core when several of his valued team members come under fire on his Coast Guard base. He and his remaining team race to the scene and end the attack, but not before innocent lives are lost. Furious and grief-stricken, he vows to do whatever is needed to bring the mastermind behind the attack to justice.

Stunned by the ambush, Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler evacuates in a helicopter carrying the only surviving gunman. The gravely wounded man whispers mysterious information to Brooke that immediately paints a target on her back.

As Brooke and Noah race to uncover answers, emotions between them ignite. Noah struggles to protect Brooke at all costs and to conceal the secret that prevents him from becoming what he longs to be–the right man for her.

Book Review: The Deadly Shallows

4 Jul

The long wait is over. The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey is available tomorrow! I received an early copy of the 3rd book in Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series and it is great! As always Pettrey delivers an adrenaline-laced suspense with great romance. Recommended!

Publishers Weekly and #1 Amazon bestselling author, Dani Pettrey has sold nearly 800,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance.

My Impressions:

Wow! What a wild ride Pettrey takes her readers on in The Deadly Shallows, book 3 in the Coastal Guardians series. This book centers on the mass shooting at a Coast Guard base. The event at the beginning of the book is a bit shocking, but Pettrey handles the subject matter in a sensitive manner. That being said, the bad guys are very, very bad and shadowy. It takes the whole team of investigators, plus some, to uncover the conspiracy behind the crime. I like that about Pettrey’s books — her ensemble cast of characters are always well-developed and integral to the plot. This book centers on Noah, the head of the CGIS unit and Brooke, a medic on the scene, but the reader is in for a treat. Caleb, another investigator with CGIS, and Austin, a private investigator, are also at at the center of another investigation. You get two crimes to solve and two sizzling romances in one novel! The suspense and danger are non-stop with lots of twists and turns and the chemistry between the main characters is perfect for lovers of romance. The faith journeys of the characters are naturally portrayed too. You really do get a riveting suspense novel with characters to love.

While this book is part of a series, I guess you could read it as a standalone, but I would not recommend that. Begin at the beginning if you haven’t already. I just hope the next book is coming soon. Fingers crossed!

Recommended.
