Excerpt — Buried in Shadows

Snow flew in Cassie’s wake as she blazed a fresh trail, joy alight in her. This was freedom. If only she could find it in her own life. But she pushed that aside and soaked up the peace being in nature always brought. Spending it with the man she still loved brimmed her happiness over. But she was simply fooling herself. Iz claimed he still loved her, too, but how could he after what she’d done? Even if she’d done it for the right reasons. Regardless, after a year of not seeing him, just having him near warmed her immeasurably more than the physical exertion heating her limbs.

Until the realization smacked her hard that even if he somehow managed to forgive her and, against all odds, still loved her, she couldn’t be with him. He would see to that. And she loved Joel too much to endanger his life.

Anger pulsed heat through her limbs. A stark contrast to the frigid air engulfing her. She had to find a way to end this. End his control over her.

A deep and guttural roar rent the air, shaking the ground with violent energy.

Turning, she froze in fear. A volcano of white exploded, and a giant wall of white rushed at her.

“Cassie,” Joel said, his mouth wide in a holler, but the sound dropped to a whisper before it reached her under the mountain’s furious snarl. “Avalanche. Brace for impact.”

My Impressions:

Great suspense is what you get from Whiteout, a novella collection from Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey. These two favorite authors always deliver just what I need — edge-of-the-seat suspense combined with sweet romance. The two stories, Buried in Shadows and Snowbound Secrets take place in the midst of an avalanche at a Colorado ski resort. If that’s not enough, threats abound as the main characters battle stalkers, intruders, and lots of mysterious mayhem. Pettrey begins the rollercoaster ride with a stalker who takes advantage of the avalanche to wreak havoc and murder on a trapped wedding party. I was as puzzled as the main characters were as to who, how, and why of the threats. It’s a big puzzler whose ending I did not see coming. In Eason’s story, old friends reunite and join forces against an unseen attacker. Whew, that one kept me guessing too! The main characters share their pasts plus some common regrets and trauma making their bond stronger than ever.

The authors added their own unique touches to create two compelling tales of danger and romance against the backdrop of nature’s fury. And as always they end with very satisfying HEAs for the characters, despite all the trauma they inflict. LOL! If you are looking for a quick, yet suspense-filled read, then I recommend Whiteout. Perfect to fit into a busy schedule or when you just want to binge a couple of great stories!

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

Happy Romance Month! It is no secret that I love romantic suspense. It is one of my go-to genres to read. If attraction and adrenaline are two must-haves in your reading choices, then check out these books!

5 Romantic Suspense Novels for The End of Summer

Body of Evidence by Irene Hannon

The final book in Hannon’s Triple Threat series was my favorite. But all are good — so read them all!

Cold Pursuit by Nancy Mehl

This is the first book in Mehl’s Ryland and St. Clair 3-book series. There is lots of pulse-pounding action and a slow burn romance. I liked that the relationship between the two main characters developed slowly. It felt very natural.

The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh

This book is billed as a romantic legal drama and is chock full of mysterious goings on. And the two main characters are delightful. They definitely have the frenemy vibe down.

Man of Shadow And Mist by Michelle Griep

If you like history along with your mystery, then check out this book. “Vampires” in Victorian England. Yes, please!

One Wrong Move by Dani Pettrey.

The southwest setting is spectacular. You will also love the teamwork of the two main characters in the first book of the Jeopardy Falls series.

Mini-Book Review — One Wrong Move

13 Jan

Dani Pettrey is known for strong suspense-filled novels with great romantic chemistry. If that’s your thing, you are going to love the first book in the Jeopardy Falls series, One Wrong Move. This one has lots of action to keep the pages turning, plus two main characters to love! Andi Forester was once an FBI agent, but now investigates insurance fraud. She teams up with Christian O’Brady who installed the break-in proof security systems for art galleries that proved him wrong. Both Andi and Christian have big baggage, and this case is make or break on their second chance at proving themselves professionally. These two characters are great at their jobs, and great together. I also loved the southwestern setting of the novel — places I have only visited in books. With Pettrey’s descriptions I can now say I was right there. This book is quick-paced with plenty of twists to keep the reader on his/her toes. I loved it and am betting you will too. Book 2, Two Seconds Too Late, releases in April, so make sure you read this one now!

Taunting riddles.
A deadly string of heists.
Two broken hearts trapped in a killer’s game.

Christian O’Brady was pulled into a life of crime at a young age by his con artist parents. Now making amends for his corrupt past, he has become one of the country’s foremost security experts. When a string of Southwestern art heists targets one of the galleries Christian secured, he is paired up with a gifted insurance investigator who has her own checkered past.

Andi Forester was a brilliant FBI forensic analyst until her career was destroyed. She now puts those skills to work investigating insurance fraud, and this latest high-stakes case will test her gift to the limit. Drawn deep into a dangerous game with an opponent bent on revenge, Christian and Andi are in a race against the clock to catch him, but the perpetrator’s game is far from finished, and one wrong move could be the death of them both.

Top 10 Tuesday — Quick Reads!

When time is short, but you still want to read, I think the best choice is a novella. I don’t read a lot of novellas; I really prefer a full length novel. A novella is also good when you want to try out a new author. My list includes novellas in a variety of genres, so no matter what you are in the mood for, there’s a book for you.
