First Line Friday — Storylore

11 Oct

Happy Friday! Today I am featuring the debut fantasy novel, Storylore, by Mae McKoy. Mae is a high school homeschooler who loves reading and writing YA and MG fantasy. Mae will be joining the 2025 Turning A New Page Book Festival in Perry, Georgia in January. I can’t wait to hear her fresh perspective on writing for the YA market.

Here’s the first line:

Our family is guarded like a secret.

Princess Cerys of the Northern Isles is the highest target in the world. Being the last living heir to the throne, she takes off and almost instantly finds herself cursed by one of the renowned Persephone’s flowers. However, she’s not the only one who falls victim. Now she must travel across the world with a pestering thief to break the curse, encountering many unlikely friends along the way. But soon they find themselves wrapped in the middle of an even more threatening situation-one that threatens the collapse of the very world they live in.

Between trying to break the curse and attempting to prevent a world-wide war, Cerys finds that not all people are who they appear to be.

And what you’re running from can catch up with you in the end.

Mae McKoy is the author of Storylore and has been writing whimsical, fantastical tales since she was six years old. She is a high school homeschool student who loves reading and writing YA and Middle Grade Fantasy with her cat and a cup of coffee. She hopes her stories inspire courage and hope in readers’ hearts. When she’s not on adventures across the country, she’s busy creating art, music, handcrafts, plays, and novels in LaGrange, Georgia. You can connect with her on Instagram @mae.mckoy.author and at local festivals and events.

Excerpt

I threw on my robe and wanted to stoke the fire in the wood stove to warm the house. But first, I checked on Pa. “Pa?” No answer. “Pa?” He couldn’t still be asleep, could he? Drawing closer, I understood from his wincing face that he was in pain; it was hard for him to even breathe.

“Oh no, Pa!” I sat on his bed and held his hand. “What’s wrong? Can I get a doctor for you? Don’t leave me, Pa!”

“Em. No time. It’s my heart.” Tavis grimaced as he spoke with labored breaths. “Please. Take my Bible. Stay with my dad in Boston. Your grandfather. Silas O’Connor. Lithographer. Remember?”

My body shook uncontrollably, but I held in tears as I listened. “Yes, Pa. Anything else?”

“Promise me. Let him get to know you – love you as I do. Family is important.” He stopped to gather what little strength remained. “Take the gun he gave to me. Initials on the handle – his and mine. Proof of who you are. Tell him I love him.” His last words were, “Have courage. Don’t forget, God will be with you. Love you, Em.” His breathing stopped.

So did mine, for a moment. The life in Pa, once so strong, was gone. He would join Ma with Jesus in heaven now. I had never felt so alone.

Of the many jobs she’s held in the past, including thirty-five years of designing and constructing stained glass windows part-time, teaching was one of the most enjoyable for Kathy J. Perry because investing in kids is so important. To this end, she continues to encourage good character with clean, moral stories kids and teens love to read. Good books make such an impact. Writing is hard work, but there’s nothing like a good story to run off with your imagination. When things are flowing, it’s like a vacation. Sometimes the best ideas come in the middle of the night. When not writing, you’ll find her painting with watercolor, doing school visits, writing a blog, interviewing other writers, designing websites, working as an administrative assistant part-time, and renovating houses. Resurgence of Dawn JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Resurgence of Dawn by Brett Armstrong hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Resurgence of Dawn

Title: Resurgence of Dawn
Series: Quest of Fire #5
Author: Brett Armstrong
Publisher: Expanse Books
Release Date: December 12, 2023
Genre: Christian, Epic/High Fantasy, Young Adult

Haunted by tragedies and failures, Anargen and Jason each struggle to find their way. Night has fallen in the Lowlands and neither teen has an easy road ahead. In Anargen’s Era, Monarch Ilyron’s powers and influence grow, forcing Anargen and his dwindling list of allies to travel the length of the Lowlands in a desperate attempt to keep the Quest and all they hold dear from falling into ruin.

Jason meanwhile must find Aria and her grandfather to help unite the Knights of Light from across the Lowlands against his brother, Dorian. But agents of darkness and painful vestiges of his past mix with vindictive new enemies to make the hope of seeing the dawn of the longed-for King’s Day ever so faint. If either teen gives in and surrenders, doom will come swiftly on their world.

Excerpt

“Please, my Great King. You must hear me! It was you who shattered my chains. You’ve safeguarded my steps to come this far. Please, help us!”

Another whistle sliced through the air, and again, Jason felt the ground shuddering under him as if even more terrified than him. Jason smelled smoke, heavy and thick, billowing to him, mingled with dust from pulverized stone. He coughed and unclenched himself enough to get low to the ground, evading the choking cloud. There were moans from those wounded, those dying. Crackling sounds came from the stone close by, threatening to give way. They couldn’t take one more hit like this, or they would all die, and the entire quest would falter.

He started to plea again for deliverance, this time angry and bitter that they would fail. Before the words reached his lips, he recalled something from the stories about Anargen. Those of his time in Ordumair during the siege when everything had seemed lost and after they had just narrowly escaped death in Cattingsford but had no certainty of the morrow.

“Sometimes we are called to make a stand, even if it ends in sorrow. Sometimes, the stand is the most powerful implement for the High King to cast off darkness.”

“Oh, my Great King. I’m quick to forget. I asked to be kept bold to the end. Not for the end to be easy and without a fight. Give me the strength to stand firm.”

Author, Author! — The Samaritan’s Patient

About The Book

Book: The Samaritan’s Patient

Author: Chevron Ross

Genre: Contemporary Fiction / Teen Christian Fiction

Release Date: January 25, 2024

Teenager Paige Abernathy awakens after a severe beating to find that she suffers from amnesia, and that everyone seems to hate her.

She has only flashes of memory until the night a grieving parent attacks her in her hospital room. Paige then remembers her role as creator of an online group where members talk about ways to commit suicide.

After recovering from the beating, Paige embarks on a journey of penance to atone for a disaster born of good intentions. Her odyssey launches her on a mission of mercy and into new danger.

The Samaritan’s Patient is a thought-provoking novel about navigating the treacherous waters of social media.

About The Author

Chevron Ross is a pseudonym for someone unimportant. He is not a writer, but God keeps putting ideas into his head that somehow turn into stories. If you like them, be sure to offer God a prayer of thanks.

More from Chevron

Behind the Scenes

This novel might never have been born had I not seen an interview on PBS with two New York Times writers, Megan Twohey and Gabriel Dance, on December 16, 2021.

These reporters did an extensive investigation into a website on which subscribers discussed committing suicide and shared methods for doing so. Most visitors to the site were thirty or younger. There were 1.2 million messages. At least forty-five suicides in multiple countries were linked to the site.

At the time of this broadcast, I had just completed my second novel, The Seven-Day Resurrection, and was wondering what to do next. The PBS interview was so shocking that I could not stop thinking about it. What motive could a person have for encouraging strangers to kill themselves? What could one possibly gain from such an endeavor? And what could provoke someone to throw away the gift of life at such a youthful age?

Each of my novels has been the result of an inspiration from God. Once He puts an idea into my head, it consumes my imagination until I cannot stop working. As you might imagine from the title, The Samaritan’s Patient is a blend of two stories: the famous parable of Jesus in the Bible, and a young person with good intentions who gets caught up in a social media nightmare.

God did all the work on this book. He created the character of Paige Abernathy and told me how to build the novel around the circumstances of her personal life—her parents, her friends, and most of all, her Christian faith. He also created the crisis that launches her on a journey of new experiences and personal growth.

I am amazed and grateful that God would choose someone so ordinary and unaccomplished as myself to do this work. Each novel God has written through me has been a great personal gift, and a reaffirmation that God has a plan for each of us. I pray that The Samaritan’s Patient will be as great a blessing to its readers as it has been to me.

Q & A with Chevron Ross

Many authors say that they have always been a writer — making up stories as a child. When did you first become a writer?

I have never considered myself a writer, although I have some minor business writing experience. I chose the pen name Chevron Ross to make sure no one knows who I am, so that God gets all the credit for the novels He writes through me.

Why did you choose Christian Fiction?

It would be more accurate to say that Christian Fiction chose me. When God put Weapons of Remorse into my head seven years ago, I knew that He wanted it to be about a Christian man struggling with his conscience as a gun rights advocate. Once I had that foundation, everything else fell into place.

Were there any obstacles you faced in your journey to publication?

They are the same that all novice authors face today: learning about the book business, attracting attention to one’s work, the cost of self-publishing. The biggest obstacle is constant doubt as to whether I am good enough to do what God is asking me to do.

How long does it usually take to craft your books? (from outlines/first drafts to final edits)

Weapons of Remorse, the first novel, took three years. No matter how many drafts I went through, it never felt quite right. The hardest part was the opening scene. It seemed so awkward. Finally, I realized that it didn’t work because I was trying to write it myself instead of letting God write through me. Once I let go, He put the words into my head. The rest of the process was editing and proofreading.

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your latest novel?

(Some of the covers even have children on them!) It was fun to look back at books that have a child/teenager’s point of view. An even dozen , there are lots of genres to choose from. I hope one piques your interest.

Excerpt

The room turns hauntingly quiet.

The beautiful opening notes instantly calm my nerves, and I begin singing my bluesy rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The melancholy song was one I’d listened to repeatedly after my parents’ divorce.

My eyes close and I pour my soul into the slow, emotional version of the song. In that moment, I’m swept away with those raw childhood memories and lose myself to the music, the crescendo capturing all the hope and despair of a little girl feeling utterly alone in the world.

Too soon, the slow final line flows through me. I hold the last note for an extra beat. Then savor the silence.

Excerpt

Shellsea stops crying. “All I ask is for some help. Is that too much? Aren’t you here to fulfill the prophecy? Make us all equal?”

“You weren’t asking for anything. You were demanding and then you rushed us.” Lucas points a finger at her. “And what do you know of a prophecy?”

She sniffles wetly. The voices from the water die off. All of the birds chitter cease. It’s silent as if nature itself is listening. She recites: “Silvery moon and Maker’s mark. There’s one who will bring light from the dark. They’ll restore the balance to each and all. Bringing even the lowest back to equal.”

Birds call out and the water laps at the banks once more. I touch my head, willing the pressure to go away. “What if I’m not who you think I am? I can swim, yes. But even as a firebird, I can’t go to the depths of the ocean. I barely managed to survive when Siltworth dragged me to his castle. You’ll have to find help from somewhere else.” I step back, preparing to leave.

“Lies! You’re lying!” Shellsea explodes.

Author: M. Liz Boyle

Release Date: September 26, 2019
Genre: Christian middle-grade/YA, Adventure

“Avalanche surprised me with its depth…a 5-star read…” -For the Love of Literature

Five friends. One moonlit summit. An unforgettable journey.

Excitement hangs in the air as Marlee and her sisters join their friends on a daring hike up a Colorado mountain – in the middle of the night. When Sawyer first proposes the idea of a moonlit summit during the two families’ annual backpacking trip, Marlee is terrified but also hooked. Having grown up taking trips to the mountains, they’ve learned a thing or two about hiking, and Sawyer is confident they’ll be back by sunrise. But when disaster strikes, their knowledge, faith, and stamina will be put to the test. EXCERPT

With a “Let’s do this!” from Marshall, we headed upward. I was about sixteen steps into the snow when I heard the roar. Before my mind even had time to register the cause of the sound, I cried out in panic. Sawyer shouted to us to run to the side of the ridge, to try to escape the path of the white monster racing toward us. Where was Lydie? What would happen to my dear baby sister? In an instant, a blur of white, I was highly aware of Sawyer and Ellie racing to get to Lydie. I heard Marshall tell me to swim to stay on top of the snow. When the mass swept under my body, I gasped in horror as I felt the powerful force of nature. The fact that snow in an avalanche settles as densely as cement terrified me as I desperately thrashed my arms and legs and gulped air before crashing down, down into darkness.

The next twenty minutes felt like watching a too-realistic movie. I was terrified, and wished it was just a scary movie that I could turn off and forget. Forget the midnight hike, forget being body-slammed by a wall of snow, forget struggling for air. Then I thought of my parents and my sisters, and I decided to use every ounce of strength to see them again. Hearing Marshall’s voice gave me even more reason to fight for life, and when we were all reunited, I felt like we were going to be okay. We had survived an avalanche. Surely we could hike to safety.

Title: Chased
Series: Off the Itinerary #2
Author: M. Liz Boyle
Publisher: Independently Published
Release Date: June 1, 2020
Genre: Christian middle-grade/YA, Adventure

“Chased would be a great addition to a k-12 Christian school library. Middle schoolers and up will enjoy it.” – Library Lady’s Kid Lit

It’s been a year since Marlee, her sisters, and the Miles boys survived an avalanche. Sure, it was a little embarrassing for them when all the neighbors saw them on the news, but they love being outdoors, and what are the odds that another tragedy would strike this adventurous group? Has anyone calculated the statistics of being hit with two natural disasters? It has to be low, so of course the two families planned to backpack again this summer.

When the teens first meet Thad, a dehydrated hiker on the trail, they give him water and food and help him recover. He seems harmless until he tells them to hike a few extra miles at sunset. Then Lydie finds a hand-drawn map that Thad dropped, and they discover why he is so eager to get away from the Stanley girls and Miles boys. So eager that he starts chasing them.

Now they have to climb up unforgiving ridges, sneak through the night, and – is that thunder and lightning? To make matters worse, Marlee has a nagging worry that her older sister Ellie is preparing to move away from home.

What is God’s plan? How will they get away from Thad before it’s too late?

“…realistic, exciting, and suspenseful…Chased is the perfect sequel to Avalanche. It’s gripping, suspenseful, entertaining, and, best of all, Christian.” -David M., Beta Reader

We all looked at him with surprise, and I must admit I was slightly alarmed. He shrugged and said, “Not everyone in the backcountry is good. Once in a while a person can meet up with a bad group.”

What is he talking about? Backpackers are generally harmless people. Usually we’re stinky, and some hikers are a bit eccentric, but not dangerous. I studied Thad’s face, trying to make sense of his last statement. Did he think we’re a bad group? Or was he making some unusual joke? Sneaking a peek toward Sawyer, I saw that he too was staring at Thad, no doubt having the same thoughts as me. I was struck with a terrifying thought that shocked my mind like a bolt of lightning: could Thad be a threat to us?

EXCERPT

I had never given much thought to the well-known fact that heat rises. But as I gaped at the flames racing uphill toward us, greedily devouring the meadow grass, I realized that the rising heat factoid is a really big deal. Braelynn’s slashing words again clouded my thoughts. Sorry to disappoint you, Mrs. Gunderson. I should never have signed up for this leadership role!

“Marlee, do something!” Reeny shrieked. Sure, let me just unroll the fire hose stashed conveniently in the top of my pack.
