The room turns hauntingly quiet.
The beautiful opening notes instantly calm my nerves, and I begin singing my bluesy rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The melancholy song was one I’d listened to repeatedly after my parents’ divorce.
My eyes close and I pour my soul into the slow, emotional version of the song. In that moment, I’m swept away with those raw childhood memories and lose myself to the music, the crescendo capturing all the hope and despair of a little girl feeling utterly alone in the world.
Too soon, the slow final line flows through me. I hold the last note for an extra beat. Then savor the silence.
