Top 10 Tuesday — Out of My Comfort Zone

11 Nov

Happy Tuesday! I am an eclectic reader — the only thing I don’t read are spicy books. IYKYK. 😉 It’s easy to read books that fit my parameters when I stick mostly to Christian fiction. So this week’s topic — books out of my comfort zone — was a bit daunting. I do know that I rarely read YA fiction simply because I’m not really the target audience, not because of topic or genre, so I am going to feature a few books that I have read and enjoyed (denoted with an asterisk) and a few that look very interesting. I hope you find one to love!

For more out of the comfort zone lists, head on over to That Artsy Reader Girl.

About The Book

A Star Appears

Title: A Star Appears
Series: The Star & Cicatrix Legacy #1
Author: Addison Dixon
Publisher: Starstruck
Release Date: March 4, 2025
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Sixteen-year-old Riley has never had the confidence to stand up to the school bullies—until one of them harasses his friend Caroline. But his act of courageous defiance causes a mysterious black star to appear at the corner of his eye, setting in motion a series of events that will change his life forever.

The star marks Riley as the third star bearer in a prophesy that spans hundreds of years. Thrust into the otherworld of Leíso, he must defeat Iradocc, a demolic who’s intent on spreading Dark Magic through Leíso and the Human World . . . and who is determined to see Riley dead.

The first two star bearers failed. Now, only Riley can stop Iradocc before it’s too late. If he doesn’t, the Dark Magic will permeate both worlds, and everyone will die. But can Riley overcome his fears and believe in himself enough to save the world and those he loves?

A Star Appears is the first book in The Star & Cicatrix Legacy series, a magical and enchanting fantasy about family, friendship, loyalty, and courage.

Excerpt

The sword traveled down to Riley heart.

“I have taken your friend and the princess to Elluciéna.” Iradocc’s face glowed in what little light shown through the window. His ice-blue eyes glinted. Somehow, his eyes were vaguely familiar, but why?

“Are you brave enough to attempt saving your friend? Do the princess and the young lady matter enough to you? What about your family? Your pathetic efforts could prove to be an amusing diversion.”

Caroline and Princess Lunaira! My family! Riley backed up as the sword drew closer and closer to his chest. “I will save them. I will! I will prove that I can battle you.” He grunted as his back made contact with the wall.

Iradocc’s mouth contorted into a hideous grin. “I have your family and your friend. I also have the princess!  It is only a matter of time before I eliminate you as well. And you will no longer be standing in my way.”

Iradocc disappeared, but his voice echoed through the empty room. Riley’s body grew cold. Caroline and the princess had been kidnapped; and all because of Riley’s irresponsible behavior!  If only he had listened to Dorobonn. What had he done?!

Happy Friday! Today I am featuring the debut fantasy novel, Storylore, by Mae McKoy. Mae is a high school homeschooler who loves reading and writing YA and MG fantasy. Mae will be joining the 2025 Turning A New Page Book Festival in Perry, Georgia in January. I can’t wait to hear her fresh perspective on writing for the YA market.

Here’s the first line:

Our family is guarded like a secret.

Princess Cerys of the Northern Isles is the highest target in the world. Being the last living heir to the throne, she takes off and almost instantly finds herself cursed by one of the renowned Persephone’s flowers. However, she’s not the only one who falls victim. Now she must travel across the world with a pestering thief to break the curse, encountering many unlikely friends along the way. But soon they find themselves wrapped in the middle of an even more threatening situation-one that threatens the collapse of the very world they live in.

Between trying to break the curse and attempting to prevent a world-wide war, Cerys finds that not all people are who they appear to be.

And what you’re running from can catch up with you in the end.

Resurgence of Dawn JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Resurgence of Dawn by Brett Armstrong hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Resurgence of Dawn

Title: Resurgence of Dawn
Series: Quest of Fire #5
Author: Brett Armstrong
Publisher: Expanse Books
Release Date: December 12, 2023
Genre: Christian, Epic/High Fantasy, Young Adult

Haunted by tragedies and failures, Anargen and Jason each struggle to find their way. Night has fallen in the Lowlands and neither teen has an easy road ahead. In Anargen’s Era, Monarch Ilyron’s powers and influence grow, forcing Anargen and his dwindling list of allies to travel the length of the Lowlands in a desperate attempt to keep the Quest and all they hold dear from falling into ruin.

Jason meanwhile must find Aria and her grandfather to help unite the Knights of Light from across the Lowlands against his brother, Dorian. But agents of darkness and painful vestiges of his past mix with vindictive new enemies to make the hope of seeing the dawn of the longed-for King’s Day ever so faint. If either teen gives in and surrenders, doom will come swiftly on their world.

Excerpt

“Please, my Great King. You must hear me! It was you who shattered my chains. You’ve safeguarded my steps to come this far. Please, help us!”

Another whistle sliced through the air, and again, Jason felt the ground shuddering under him as if even more terrified than him. Jason smelled smoke, heavy and thick, billowing to him, mingled with dust from pulverized stone. He coughed and unclenched himself enough to get low to the ground, evading the choking cloud. There were moans from those wounded, those dying. Crackling sounds came from the stone close by, threatening to give way. They couldn’t take one more hit like this, or they would all die, and the entire quest would falter.

He started to plea again for deliverance, this time angry and bitter that they would fail. Before the words reached his lips, he recalled something from the stories about Anargen. Those of his time in Ordumair during the siege when everything had seemed lost and after they had just narrowly escaped death in Cattingsford but had no certainty of the morrow.

“Sometimes we are called to make a stand, even if it ends in sorrow. Sometimes, the stand is the most powerful implement for the High King to cast off darkness.”

“Oh, my Great King. I’m quick to forget. I asked to be kept bold to the end. Not for the end to be easy and without a fight. Give me the strength to stand firm.”

About The Author

As a former fighter pilot, stealth pilot, and tactical deception officer, James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. He is the award-winning author of thrillers, mysteries, and fantasies for adults and children, and he is the developer of Lightraider Academy games. As a pastor’s kid in Colorado Springs, he guinea-pigged every youth discipleship program of the 1980s, but the one that engaged him and shaped him most as a Christ-follower and Kingdom warrior was DragonRaid, by Dick Wulf—the genesis of the Lightraider world.

More from James

There and Back Again: A Game?

The transition from book to game and back again is no easy thing. I’ve been on a steep learning curve since the day I started writing Wolf Soldier, the first book in the Lightraider Academy trilogy. Lion Warrior is the third.

I should walk back a step. Lightraiders is a game. Did you know that? It began as DragonRaid, a 1980s fantasy adventure game designed for teaching Biblical learning and discipleship. DragonRaid had a huge influence on my Christian walk in my teens. I now have the honor of carrying the concepts designed by the game’s original creator, Dick Wulf, to a new generation through games and stories. Before he went on to be with the Lord, Dick was kind enough to write a foreword for Wolf Soldier.

The task, when it came to me, was monumental: take a highly allegorical game with isolated location details and expand it into a full-realm book series while also building a new version of the game designed for today’s teens and families. By His grace, God placed men and women in my path who came alongside me to help—fellow believers who are creators from the realms of Tolkien, Star Wars, DC Comics, and Disney. Without them, it could not have been done.

We’ve been building the game in the background for three years. At the same time, the books have served as a transition from the old to the new. Lion Warrior completes that transition, and the book and the new Lightraiders Adventure Bible System game for teens will release almost simultaneously.

If you read through the series starting with Wolf Soldier, you may get a feel for this transition. The first book is more allegorical and tightly focused, much like the original DragonRaid game. Fantasy terms used in that story draw from the original game, with only a few new terms introduced. Bear Knight begins to broaden that perspective. It stretches past allegory and introduces several new ideas that you’ll find in the new Lightraiders game. In Lion Warrior, my hope is that you’ll finally have a picture of the fully developed realm from the Liberated Land in the south to the frozen islands in the far north of the Dragon Lands. And that story is fully steeped in the new game with terms and game mechanics slipped in for astute readers to find.

So, we’ve come full circle. DragonRaid became the story world in Wolf Solder. Then, as I and the team God sent to me rebuilt the game for a new generation, new elements found their way into Bear Knight. And now we have Lion Warrior, fully based on the new Lightraiders discipleship game. If you read the full trilogy and check out the game, I hope you’ll see it all growing together.

I do love the idea of game to story or vice versa. Are there other game/story combinations you love?

Two young people from opposite sides of the Great Continent must make sense of their life.

Rune has grown up all of her life in the mountainous northern nation of Kansanai. As granddaughter of the Senior Elder, she has been a devout believer of the Vihishki gods her whole life. Yet, when a prophet challenges the Vihishki gods against his Aivan, the One Truth, everything she thought she knew is turned upside down. Will she be able to let go of the life she thought she deserved for something far greater than what she could have ever imagined?

Rolf goes through the motions of everyday life in the southern nation of Etalentin. Yet, his routine is disrupted when a voice claiming to be the one true God speaks to him. Listening to his heart, he follows Aivan, but he is thrown temptation after temptation on his journey. Will Rolf be able to resist the temptations in order to fulfill Aivan’s plan for him?

Aivan: The One Truth is a story about self-discovery, identity, and faith.

About The Author

Kayla E. Green is a school librarian, speculative fiction author, and poet who adores her husband and their furbabies. When she isn’t writing, reading, or taking photos for her bookstagram, she loves singing loudly and off-key to KLove Radio, napping, and pretending she’s a unicorn. Her award-winning YA fantasy novella, Aivan: The One Truth, and her inspirational poetry collection, Metamorphosis, are now available through book retailers. Kayla also has stories and poems featured in various anthologies, contest-winning stories published with Clean Fiction Magazine, and several flash fiction stories available online through Havok Publishing.

More from Kayla

Working in education, it often is disheartening to see how much darkness bombards today’s youth. With Aivan: The One Truth, the forthcoming Chronicles of the One Truth series, and all my writing, my primary goal is to offer young readers a beacon of hope in this dark world. Alluding to many stories and lessons found in the Old Testament, Aivan is a fast-paced novella designed to capture young readers and pull them into the world of the Great Continent. It is my biggest prayer with this book that Rune and Rolf’s journey in this fantasy narrative will serve as a guiding light to lead readers of all ages to seek truth in our reality—the truth that can only be found through our one true God.

One of my current projects is developing a companion devotional for Aivan: The One Truth as well as the full-length novels that will be part of the complete Chronicles of the One Truth series (which will be released at a later date). The devotional would be a tool for parents, teachers, and pastors to use along with the book to help young readers understand the themes and biblical parallels.

Two major themes within the novella center around identity and purpose. Rune’s struggles with disappointment with shattered dreams and the heartache of feeling lost, alone, and unfulfilled are struggles that are arguably universal. In looking at Rune’s journey, young readers as well as adult readers can recognize the real-world challenges of identity: Who exactly are we? In today’s world, there is a constant battle between God and society. How can one embrace their identity as a child of God when the world demands us to rage and rebel against that title?

In Exodus 3:11 (NIV) Moses asks God, “Who am I?” after he is told to go to the Pharaoh to rescue the Israelites. God tells Moses, “I am with you,” (Exodus 3:12, NIV). Similar to Moses’ walk of faith, Rune, like us all, must learn to accept the truth. Like Aivan in the fantasy novella, our God, the one true God, is always with us. We may not immediately—or ever—understand His plan; however, through Him we are whole, redeemed, and loved. And in that, we have great purpose.

I pray that whoever reads Aivan: The One Truth finds parallels to our own world and finds solace knowing that we are because God is the great “I Am.”

In my upcoming companion devotional, I will explore the concepts of identity and purpose from a biblical perspective. Anyone who wants updates on this, should follow my blog and subscribe to my newsletter to be the first to know!

Q & A with Kayla E. Green

Was there a special someone, such as a teacher, parent, or other relative, who encouraged you to pursue writing?

I have been oh so blessed with numerous sources of encouragement throughout my life overall and in terms of my pursuit of writing.

The first person who comes to mind is my mother, Terri. She read to me and my siblings every day during our childhood, instilling within me a love for books from an early age. But she also would take time to engage with me and ask me questions when I decided to make up my own stories before I learned to read.

I also owe a lot of thanks to my art teacher who I worked with from 2nd grade through high school graduation, Mrs. Smith. She didn’t encourage me to pursue writing directly; however, she encouraged me to pursue creative endeavors. In addition, she gave me some advice when I was young that, though simple, has had a profound impact on me. She told me: “Trust yourself—you know more than you give yourself credit for. And if you mess up, you are smart enough to clean it up” (paraphrased as it was about 15 years ago).

In addition to my art teacher, my journalism teacher in high school, Mrs. Peregoy, also was a huge encouragement. She helped me hone my writing skills and truly helped shape me into the person I am today. In fact, she went from a teacher to mentor to friend—she was a bridesmaid in my wedding!

My sister, Kari, and friends, Rafael and Hannah, have also been big encouragers always willing to read and offer me feedback. My husband, Matthew, dad, Cliff, brother, Tyler, and my grandparents are also continuously supportive of my writing endeavors. I am blessed to have so much love and support!

Why did you choose the fantasy genre?

I love magic and whimsy within fantasy books, and I believe that played a role in my own stories being primarily fantasy. Aivan: The One Truth is a young adult novella, but even advanced middle grade readers will enjoy it, too. There’s so much room for creativity in the worlds you create and how you approach real world relatability in fantasy—it’s just so fun!

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your latest novel?

Simply, the book was a story placed on my heart by God. I had a general idea for a story following a young girl who had her life planned out only for the plan to fall to pieces. I spent a lot of time crafting this girl’s personality and character, even naming her Rune. However, I didn’t exactly know how to tell her story. One Sunday at church, the sermon focused on Elijah and the prophets of Baal. The passages in 1 Kings recounting how God set the altar on fire when called on by Elijah not only influenced an important scene within Aivan: The One Truth but it led to an “ah-ha” moment for me. I began piecing together details of the Great Continent and Rune’s world which has several Old Testament story influences.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing one of your novels?

It is my prayer that with reading Aivan: The One Truth, readers walk away comforted by the fact that we were made resilient and we can rebuild when our plans fall apart, empowered knowing that the one true God in our own world loves them, and filled with hope at the reminder that light will always prevail over darkness.

Readers always want to know what is next for an author. Do you have any works in progress you can
share about?

I am happy to share! I am wrapping up some major edits on the first book in a new young adult fantasy duology, The Tritonia Chronicles. The first book is titled The Goodness of Unicorns. The final blurb has not been released yet but I will share that it will be a must read for fans of noble bright fantasy narratives with no magic but elements of blessings and unique giftings, strong sister bonds, friends to lovers and chosen one tropes, and stories that show light prevailing over darkness! The book is being published with Ambassador International. Be sure to follow both me and AI on Instagram for updates (@ambassadorintl @theunicornwriter93).

Spotlight On YA Fantasy + Author Interview — Of Sea And Smoke

14 Dec

About The Book

Book: Of Sea and Smoke

Author: Gillian Bronte Adams

Genre: YA Epic Fantasy

Release Date: November 21, 2023

He rides a seablood, a steed of salt and spray, born to challenge the tides.

Six years ago, the wrong brother survived, and nothing will ever convince Rafi Tetrani otherwise. But he is done running from his past, and from the truth. As civil war threatens Ceridwen’s tenuous rule in Soldonia, Rafi vows to fight the usurper sitting on the imperial throne of Nadaar, even if it means shouldering his brother’s responsibilities as the empire’s lost heir.

The stolen shipload of magical warhorses offers just the edge he needs. But the steeds have been demanded in ransom by the emperor’s ruthless assassin, and if Rafi hopes to raise a band of riders, he must first outwit his brother’s murderer.

Yet when his best efforts end in disaster, and an audacious raid sparks an empire-wide manhunt, even forging an unexpected alliance might not be enough to help Rafi turn the tides, let alone outrace the wave of destruction intent on sweeping them all away.Click here to get your copy!

About The Author

Gillian Bronte Adams writes epic fantasy novels, including the award- winning Of Fire and Ash and The Songkeeper Chronicles. She loves strong coffee, desert hikes, and trying out new soup recipes on crisp fall nights. Her favorite books are the ones that make your heart ache and soar in turn. When she’s not creating vibrant new worlds or dreaming up stories that ring with the echoes of eternity, she can be found off chasing sunsets with her horse, or her dog, Took.

More from Gillian

One of my favorite things about writing epic fantasy is not actually what you might expect. It’s not the fantastical elements, although I absolutely love creating worlds filled with magical warhorses, sosswyrm tangles, and stone-eye tigers who can paralyze their prey with a glance. It’s not the intensity of the action or the world altering stakes, although there’s nothing quite so thrilling as throwing your characters into a do-or-die situation, and the pulse-pounding, breathtaking, heart-aching battle sequences that follow.

Instead, one of my favorite things about writing such wild and epic stories is the opportunity to ground them in very real, very human characters, with very real, very human emotions, and in the complexity of those characters’ relationships with others. Mentor relationships, deeply loyal friendships, and especially sibling relationships.

I am the second-born of five siblings, and I love and admire each of my siblings. Each one encourages and inspires and awes me in his or her own unique way. But growing up, if you had told me that my older sister had hung the moon, I would have believed you. She was two and a half years older than me—and yes, that half year mattered to both of us, though for opposite reasons; she because it meant she was that much older, me because it meant we were that much closer. Somehow, everything she touched seemed golden, and I wanted to be a part of it too.

She was a force of nature—a foaming ocean tide—and I was caught up in her wake.

She took up horseback riding, and so did I. She picked up books, and I had to read them too, even if it meant sitting beside her in the car with my own book open on my lap, surreptitiously reading hers over her shoulder. (Needless to say, that drove her crazy, and older siblings everywhere can probably commiserate.)

She dove into creative writing, and out of nowhere, I developed a passion for the written word. But always, within her, there was this spark of imagination and creativity that I felt I could only ever aspire to. Whatever I did, she had done first and better.

And I could only hope to one day achieve her level of greatness.

Rafi, one of the main characters in Of Sea and Smoke, also has an older sibling, a brother he has always looked up to. While Rafi and his relationship with his brother is not based on my relationship with my older sister—we’re all four of us wildly different people—there were some aspects of my experience as a second-born that I was able to draw upon. Rafi admires his brother’s strength and confidence. His assurance and rightness. His nobility and leadership. By the time we enter the story, his older brother is no longer around, but Rafi has spent his whole life setting his brother up on a pedestal and then trying to measure up to that ideal.

Is it any wonder, then, that he has always found himself wanting?

Now, Rafi finds himself having to step into the role that should have been his brother’s, and the only way he can contemplate facing that challenge is by stamping out the things he looks down upon in himself—many of them, the things that make him himself—and trying to be his brother instead.

Growing up, I can’t tell you how many times I looked at my older sister and wished that I could be more like her and less like myself. More confident. More brilliant. More vibrant. More her. But it wasn’t until my older sister’s interests began to drift into new additional avenues, while mine stayed mostly the same (horses, books, writing), that I finally began to grow into myself. To recognize my strengths, my unique skills, the things that only I bring to the table, and to acknowledge that even when they are different from hers, they are still good.

These days, my older sister and I are best friends. She was the first person I trusted to read Of Sea and Smoke before it went out into the world. I still look up to her in so many ways, and yes, I think I’ll always feel a bit like she hung the moon. But I have grown to appreciate the beauty of what I can learn from my sister’s strengths, while also recognizing the value of my own. And without revealing any spoilers, I think I can safely say that part of Rafi’s journey in Of Sea and Smoke wraps around learning that too, all while he’s raising a band of rebel fighters, trying to outwit an infamous assassin, and plotting to overthrow the empire’s oppressive rule.

Wild, epic stories, grounded in real, human experiences, and honestly, can reading get any more fun than that?

I hope you enjoy the ride!

Gillian Bronte Adams

Q & A with Gillian Bronte Adams

Many authors say that they have always been a writer — making up stories as a child. When did you first become a writer?

I completed my first work of fiction at the ripe old age of five. My dad had just finished reading The Hobbit aloud, and I was not okay with the character deaths at the end of the book (Thorin, Fili, Kili), so I rewrote the story in my head so no one died. (Sorry, J.R.R. Tolkien!) I rewrote it so convincingly, apparently, that when I picked the book up to read it for myself as a preteen, I was shocked to find out that the ending was not what I expected! In all seriousness though, I did do a lot of creative writing growing up and of and on throughout middle school, but it wasn’t until high school that I start pursuing writing more intentionally, with the idea of one day becoming a published author as a secret dream.

Why did you choose the YA epic fantasy genre?

Epic fantasy has always been my favorite genre to read, ever since my dad introduced me to Tolkien’s work. To this day, it takes up the majority of my bookshelf space, and not just because the books tend to be on the thick side. They say to write what you love, and my favorite stories have always been the ones with vivid, fantastic worlds, imperfect heroes and heroines standing against overwhelming odds, and pulse-pounding action that keeps you turning pages long into the night. Stories about relationships of all kinds—siblings, mentors, loyal to the death friends, and rivals who maybe shouldn’t actually be enemies. Stories that make your heart ache and soar in turn, with the depth and hope and beauty of it all! Epic fantasy has always been the place I found my fictional “homes away from home,” and I love getting to create that for someone else.

What types of research do you pursue? Books, on-site visits, etc.

I love research, whether it’s paging through stacks of books or chasing rabbit trails on Wikipedia. Because I write epic fantasy, that often looks like doing research on historical battles, ways of life, weaponry, cultures, etc., and I particularly love when I can discover historical treatises or manuals on the thing I’m researching, like an ancient Greek treatise on horsemanship or an old Byzantine manual on warfare. But researching for fantasy also means thinking outside the box and looking for inspiration in somewhat unusual, or surprising, places, like the research I did on WWII era warfare for Of Sea and Smoke, because my magical warhorses could be used tactically like some of the advanced weaponry from that time period.

Whenever possible I love doing hands-on research too. Anytime you can see or smell or touch something, whether it’s hiking through a specific setting or trying to swing a sword, it allows you to write with a level of authenticity that can be hard to fake. But looking beyond the books or the hands-on opportunities, for me, research also means cultivating a mindset where you intentionally pay attention to the overlooked things around you, collecting experiences and observations about the everyday that you can draw from when you write. Oftentimes, I think, it’s those little overlooked observations that truly enhance your writing and help it come alive.

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your latest novel.

Of Sea and Smoke is the second book in The Fireborn Epic, a YA epic fantasy series where warriors ride to battle on magical breeds of horses. The idea struck me over ten years ago now while I was working as the Head Wrangler at a youth camp. Spending all day in the saddle, working with horses, introducing kids to the riding experience for the first time in their lives all felt very magical. I was also serving on a rural volunteer fire department that summer, putting out the occasional grassfire, and the combination of fire, horses, and imagination all came together one night in the back of the camp office while I was waiting for a staff meeting. Suddenly, I was scribbling down ideas for horses with magical abilities, like firebreathing horses, or horses who could vanish into shadows or cause earthquakes with their hooves. Before I knew it, I had an epic world I couldn’t wait to explore.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing one of your novels?

My hope is always that readers will find a sort of home away from home in my novels, that the storyworld will be a place they’ll want to revisit time and again, and that the characters will come to feel like friends. But when they step away from the page, I hope they leave encouraged to press on with bravery and perseverance in their own lives and to recognize their own worth and see the value of their unique strengths. That’s the journey that Rafi, one of the main characters in Of Sea and Smoke, goes on, and I think it’s one that can be particularly applicable in a time when social media floods us with opportunities to compare ourselves to others and feel like we’re always somehow lacking. Interestingly enough, I didn’t intentionally set out to write his story that way, but as I dug into how he would grow as a character through the events of the story, that theme wound up emerging, and I hope it’s encouraging to readers.

About The Author

Sofia grew up moving constantly. Never in one place more than three years, there was plenty of time to daydream during long car rides. College finally gave her a chance to study what she had always dreamed of doing, writing her stories.

She obtained a B.A. in Journalism, married her handsome husband and had two amazing sons. She’s also the proud mother of a 100-pound red rust Doberman who loves to chase around his sister, a fluffy-not-fat-cat.

A big believer in dreaming big, Sofia loves speaking to youth, encouraging them to find hope no matter what their life looks like. Sofia is a daughter of the Lord first and foremost and finds inspiration with stories like King David and Esther.

More from Sofia

I became a Young Adult Christian Fantasy Author so that I could add clean content to the world of Young Adult books. I love writing a great love story, and here’s one that will meet all your expectations of a great enemies-to-lovers romance without the spice. I love writing a story that mixes faith with fantasy, much like Morgan Busse, Nadine Brandes and Sara Ella. And if you’re wondering if the butterfly on the cover has any significance at all? Why, yes, yes it does. Read Terra to find out why.

Q & A with Sofia Simpson

Was there a special someone, such as a teacher, parent, or other relative, who encouraged you to pursue writing?

My childhood was pretty chaotic, I lived in survival mode until my older brother took me in when I was 14. I didn’t know anything really about myself until those next few years other than I loved to read as a child. But one teacher in my high school graded a story I wrote for Creative Writing and said it was excellent and that I was a great writer. That was the first time I heard that, and I was shocked. It stuck with me, however, and so I made more of an effort to improve my writing. My older brother, however, helped with that. When I forgot my keys, he would assign me to write a paper as punishment. They got longer every time he assigned it, and I would have to embellish them more and more, because I often had to write these papers since I always forgot my keys.

Why did you choose Christian YA fantasy?

I write Young Adult Christian Fantasy because I absolutely love to express my faith. It’s a joy to describe my characters’ walk of faith, so my readers can live it with them, breathe it in and feel how it feels to have a relationship with our Creator.

I write fantasy because there’s no better day than making up a world all my own and having my characters live in it, love throughout it and explore the world for me.

I write Young Adult because I am a 17-year-old at heart. I love writing about first loves, first heartbreaks, first kiss, all of those firsts. (I, of course, keep it at PG) Teenagers are ready, or think they are, to conquer the world, and I love to write the highs and lows of that exploration. And I absolutely want to see a character grow. What better time than as you become an adult?

What types of research do you pursue? Books, on-site visits, etc.

I have to really experience something to write about it. For instance, I’m writing book two in my Elemental Series and I had a scene where my MC is describing the stories in the stars and their constellations. So, I went to a stargazing night at my local library and learned how to find the stars I was looking for and their constellations. It was amazing! I’m also writing a setting in my book where my characters live off the grid in a remote place in Canada. Since I can’t recreate that experience easily, I have interviewed two people who live off the grid, asking all kinds of questions on what it’s like to live like that. So, if I can’t experience it myself, I rely on the experiences of others. I’ve even called a campsite in Utah (I’m in Florida) that was a setting in Terra. I interviewed them several times, it was lots of fun! They even asked me to send them a copy of my book so they could put it in their library for their campers.

What does a typical writing day look like? Are you structured or informal in
your writing schedule?

I used to be crazy informal. I wrote when the mood struck me and took off weeks when the mood didn’t. That’s all recently changed. I’ve now adopted a daily writing schedule where I try to write 2,000 words a day. I sometimes make it, I sometimes don’t. There are days where I’ll get in 5,000 words, it all varies on what my day looks like. But, if I stick to my schedule, I’ll write 10,000 words a week, which has helped me to nearly finish my 100,000 word book in 10 weeks! I’m amazed what this wonderful world of a writing schedule has done for my writing! I can now plan on publishing more than one book a year now!

Readers always want to know what is next for an author. Do you have any works in progress you can share about?

Yes! I’m currently writing book two in, An Elemental Series, called Torch. It’s up for preorder, so go check it out. It’s been my favorite book to write so far! I’ve switched my POV from third person to first in this book, and I’ve never felt so connected to my main character. I feel what she feels, can hear every thought, understand her motivations so much more. I hope my readers love it as much as I do.

EXCERPT

Cook scowls. “You insolent, stupid, girl.” She spins and throws me back against the sturdy block table. Her reddened cheeks puff out with every heaving breath she takes. To focus, I stare at the mole on the side of her face. A dark hair sticks out of the center like a cat’s whisker.

This is what impertinent maids get.” She flips the metal arm holding the kettle over the flames outward. The stew splashes and sizzles down the side of the black pot. Cook yanks me away from the table and thrusts my hand over the bubbling contents. I clench my fingers together, but the steam still blanches my skin.

In a flash, I call out with my mind. It’s instinct. I can’t stop it. My eyes burn and I blink. White light explodes behind my eyelids.

A butcher knife from the table sails through the steaming air. Cook’s eyes bulge as the knife flies past and thuds deep in the wall behind her. Blood drips down the side of her face where the hairy mole once was.

More from Charmayne

Hello, Readers, Educators, Book Reviewers and Celebrate Lit Bloggers!
Although I am new to a lot of social media, I have heard that your group is a fantastic resource to new authors. Being a little bit of an introvert, you might even call me reluctant or a slow starter, but I assure you that I can imagine strategies and battle in the heavenlies for readers’ minds with the best of ’em. I say, “Let’s go!”
Please feel free to connect with me on any social media platform, or to write to me directly. I have loved engaging with anyone who has read my book and has sent me a comment or question. Because Indebted was published, I was thrilled to be able to speak to a group of college students taking coursework in literature and writing at Texas Tech last year.
I love facilitating creative writing seminars especially speaking to authors about how to join a system of discipline and creativity to overcome writer’s block.
My hope, however, is to be able to engage more students in elementary school and junior high about the topics in my books because I write about the things facing young people with a certain perspective that the Lord sees them right where they are, that God actually cares deeply for them, and that He has answers for them. These answers include that Jesus paid the penalty for a kid’s lying, bullying, violence, disbelief, envy, and rebellion and that bringing them to back to God means that they get to be adopted into His kingdom as princes and princesses.
I hope that my books provide that suspension of disbelief needed for us all to see the possibility of walking in faith with others in traumatic times and to experience the wonders of God’s word to us.
Sincerely and Gratefully,
Charmayne

Author Q&A

Many authors say that they have always been a writer — making up stories as a child. When did you first become a writer?

I have been writing since the age of 10, journaling about love and loss in my fourth-grade class. My mom and dad gave me a typewriter for Christmas that year and I went around pretending to be a reporter. I loved writing. I found that my writing was more clear and confident than when I spoke.

Why did you choose the fantasy genre?

I love to imagine what could be. This genre allows me to let my imagination run wild and free. I am fascinated by the mystical and mysterious.

What types of research do you pursue?

Books, on-site visits, etc. I primarily use historical or travel websites as well as on line encyclopedias.

What does a typical writing day look like? Are you structured or informal in your writing schedule?

I’m so glad you asked this question because you gave me a way to discuss what I call the “Discipline Of Creativity,” the necessary steps to create a lifestyle of creativity. One of the points in my lecture is a discussion of the ritual I like to create before I write. This ritual includes five minutes of coloring before writing while listening, each time, to the same soundtrack. I continue to listen to the soundtrack while writing for 25 minutes. I sometimes write twice in one day but usually just 25 minutes a day. I write about one and a half books a year although this year I wrote two books in less than a year.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing one of your novels?

I want my readers to come away with a sense of hope from the fact that we are never alone when we belong to Jesus Christ. I also hope they get the message that we need each other on this dysfunctional planet.
