Savannah Harris vowed to leave behind her old life as an intrepid investigative reporter. But when a friend raises suspicions about two migrant workers who’ve gone missing from the sleepy coastal town Savannah calls home, her curiosity spikes.
As ever more eerie incidents begin afflicting the area, each works to draw Savannah out of her seclusion and raise the stakes—for both Savannah and the surrounding community. Even as Savannah’s new boarder, Clive Miller, makes her feel things she thought long forgotten, she suspects he’s hiding something too, and he’s not the only one. Doubts collide in Savannah’s mind: Who can she really trust?
As secrets emerge and danger closes in, Savannah must choose between faith and uncertainty. One wrong decision might spell the end…not just for her, but for everyone around her.
Will she unravel the mystery in time, or will doubt get the best of her?
Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious–but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life–and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery for her book Suspicious Minds also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush.
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.
My Impressions:
Before picking up Dubiosity, I had only read cozy mysteries by Christy Barritt. But a FB group recommended this one, so I gave it a try. With this novel, Barritt has proven to me that she can write outstanding page-turning suspense with a romantic touch.
Set in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, this novel is filled with conspiracies and intrigue. Migrant workers are getting ill, while others have gone missing. The director of the agency tasked with helping them may or may not have attempted suicide. And many characters are not who they seem.Savannah Harris and Clive Miller team up to investigate, yet their pasts keep getting in the way of truly trusting each other.
Dubiosity is a complex novel with lots of twists and turns and even more suspects. I was suspicious of one character in particular, but did not get final confirmation until the very end. Barritt did a good job of hiding his/her identity. I really liked the two main characters, both of whom had endured trauma and heartbreak, but were determined to find healing and hope. The narrator did a good job as well, giving each character a unique voice.
If you are a fan of Terri Blackstock or Brandilyn Collins, then definitely check out Dubiosity.

Gentle and unassuming, Hope Kauffman has never been one to question the traditions of her Mennonite upbringing. She quietly helps her father run Kingdom Quilts and has agreed to the betrothal he arranged for her with the devout but shy Ebbie Miller.
Despite the attempts of Hope and other Kingdom residents to maintain the status quo, changes have already begun to stir in the small Mennonite town. The handsome and charismatic Jonathon Wiese is the leader of the move to reform, while Ebbie insists Kingdom must remain true to its foundation. When Hope’s safety is threatened by a mysterious outsider, she can’t help but question what she’s always been taught about the Mennonite tradition of nonviolence.
As it swiftly becomes apparent the threat Hope faced is only the beginning, the town that’s always stood so strong finds itself divided. With tensions high and their lives endangered by an unknown enemy, will Hope and the people of Kingdom allow fear and division to break them or will they draw on the strength of the God they serve?
Nancy Mehl lives in Wichita, Kansas, with her husband Norman and her very active puggle, Watson. She’s authored fourteen books and is currently at work on a new series for Bethany House Publishing. All of Nancy’s novels have an added touch – something for your spirit as well as your soul. “I welcome the opportunity to share my faith through my writing,” Nancy says. “God is number one in my life. I wouldn’t be writing at all if I didn’t believe that this is what He’s called me to do. I hope everyone who reads my books will walk away with the most important message I can give them: God is good, and He loves you more than you can imagine. He has a good plan for your life, and there is nothing you can’t overcome with His help.” Readers can learn more about Nancy through her Web site: www.nancymehl.com or her blog.
My Impressions:
If February finds you yearning for some romance, pick up Nancy Mehl’s latest in the Road to Kingdom series, Unbreakable. Though it is book 2 in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. The residents of the small Kansas town of Kingdom strive to live a separate life. The Mennonite community keeps itself separate from its more worldly neighbors. But a recent outbreak of violence against churches inserts itself into its midst. The Mennonite tradition of non-violent resistance to evil is put to the test.
Hope Kaufman’s normally quiet life is upset when she is attacked not once, but twice. A good friend is murdered and she has two men who profess to love her. Hope’s predictable and ordered life is soon replaced by confusion and doubt. Struggling to make sense of what she believes and God’s direction for her life, Hope prays for God’s wisdom in all facets of her life.
I found Unbreakable a little slow at first. There is a great deal of discussion between characters on the most prudent course to take in the threats against town’s people. But towards the middle the action heats up and the suspense takes off. I liked the characters, although I was frustrated with Hope, a twenty-six year old woman who lets her father make many of her decisions. The frustration with her character subsided as she grew and decided to take charge of her own life.
If you like romantic suspense or novels involving an Amish theme you will like Unbreakable. (Although the town’s residents are Mennonites, they have succeeded in separating themselves from worldly influence, much like the Amish.)

Kristen Heitzmann is the bestselling author of over a dozen novels, including Freefall, Halos, A Rush of Wings, and the Christy Award winner Secrets. She and her husband, Jim, and their family live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she serves as worship leader in their church. Visit http://www.kristenheitzmann.com for more.
My Impressions:
The Breath of Dawn is the third novel featuring the Spencer family. (My review of A Rush of Wings can be read HERE.) The novels can be read as standalones, but why would you want to? They are just sooo good. In this book Heitzmann introduces Quinn Reilly, a woman who has left her family and friends to free herself from the overly strict doctrines of her church and to escape detection by a former church minister who she testified against. Settled in Juniper Springs, Colorado, Quinn is busy building her online sales business and maybe her own life. But Quinn can run, but she cannot hide from the man pursuing her. Not until she makes a marriage of convenience with Morgan Spencer who promises her safety, but not his whole heart.
Heitzmann has created a wonderful romance tinged with suspense and tension. She has also included a dose of spiritual warfare that is down right creepy! At 400+ pages, you will not want this story to end. The best part of the book are the characters, though. Morgan Spencer is larger than life — a great romantic character. Quinn is quiet, yet feisty when needed. And you will absolutely fall in love with Morgan’s pint-sized daughter, Livvie. These are characters that become real to the reader. And while the love story, with its marriage of convenience, seemed a bit out there at first, it really does work in this book.
So if you are looking for a great book for yourself or as a gift for the romance lover in your life, get The Breath of Dawn. Or better yet get all three books featuring the Spencers (including A Rush of Wings and The Still of Night). Perfect for those cold winter nights!
Highly Recommended.

A serial killer is targeting illegal aliens in southern Texas. Texas Ranger Cody Jackson is paired with a local police officer, Liliana Rodriguez, to investigate the murders.
While the case brings Cody and Liliana ever closer, the tension between Americans and Mexican Americans heightens. Fighting their attraction, Cody and Liliana race to discover who is behind the murders and bring peace to the area. What they uncover isn’t what they expected. Will Cody and Liliana’s faith and love be strong enough to survive the storm of violence?
Margaret Daley, an award-winning author of eighty-two books, has been married for over forty years and is a firm believer in romance and love. When she isn’t traveling, she’s writing love stories, often with a suspense thread and corralling her three cats that think they rule her household.
Her latest book is the Christian fiction suspense Shattered Silence, about a series of murders that seem like a hate crime, but things aren’t what they appear.
A serial killer, a battered wife, a defiant teenager and a smuggling ring — Detective Liliana Rodriguez of the Durango police and Texas Ranger Cody Jackson have their hands full! In Margaret Daly’s newest novel, Shattered Silence, you have all that and more. Fast paced with twists and turns and unforeseen developments, this book will satisfy those who love the romantic suspense genre.
I really liked Daly’s characters, even or maybe especially those who were in supporting roles. They were flawed and struggling to do what’s right. Yet they had a hope and a determination that made the story bring out the positives in man’s behavior against the backdrop of evil and darkness. A message of faith was woven throughout the story, but was never preachy. I think any reader of romantic suspense, Christian or not, would enjoy this book.
The second installment in The Men of The Texas Rangers series, Shattered Silencecan be read as a standalone. I like series like this one where settings and themes are continued, but not dependent on other books for the reader to enjoy them. All in all I would recommend Shattered Silence.

A sabotaged flight. Two murdered divers. A single clue—a grainy image of sunken treasure.
Dive Rescue Captain Cole McKenna has never worked a case like this, but who he’s working with may prove more dangerous than the assignment. It’s been a lifetime since Bailey mangled his heart. Now she’s back in town and he needs her expertise to track down the illusive treasure.
Professor of Russian Studies Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey again, but when her beloved aunt dies, she has no choice. Her plan of attack is simple: return for Agnes’s funeral, get the family business ready for a quick sale, and then put Yancey and all the heartbreaking memories wrapped up in it behind her for good.
Cole walking through her door, asking for her help on a murder investigation, wasn’t part of her plan, neither are the feelings he’s resurrecting—feelings best left dead.
Bailey agrees to help for the sake of the victims, and travels with Cole across Alaska’s rugged terrain and deep beneath its coastal waters. As the case escalates, so do their feelings for one another. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to let go of the past and just when Bailey thinks she can’t take it any longer, the case shifts in a new and extremely personal direction, fastening her in for its duration.
Racing against the clock and a rising body count, Cole and Bailey fight to find the treasure and uncover the hidden history at the root of it all. But will they be too late?
Dani Pettrey is a wife, homeschooling mom and author. She feels blessed to write inspirational romantic suspense because it incorporates so many things she loves–the thrill of adventure, nail-biting suspense, the deepening of one’s faith and plenty of romance. She’s a huge fan of dark chocolate, is always in search of the best iced mocha and her dream is to one day own a little cottage on a remote stretch of beach. She and her husband reside in Maryland with their two teenage daughters.
My Impressions:
I was somewhat disappointed by Submerged, the first novel in the Alaskan Courage series by Dani Pettrey. I had read several reviews that sung its praises and the cover boasts a quote by Dee Henderson promising that the suspense will keep you up at night. I did not find that to be the case. While there is definitely an element of suspense, the story really is centered on the relationship of Bailey and Cole.
Bailey Craig left Yancey, Alaska 8 years ago, never to return, until the death of her aunt calls her back. Yancey holds no fond memories for Bailey. Instead it reminds her of the many mistakes and failures that surrounded her teen years. And she fears how Cole McKenna, her one time boyfriend, will react when she gets to town. While a few townspeople seem to remember her teen indiscretions, most welcome her back as family. Soon Bailey is drawn into the McKenna family and, try as she might to resist, her attraction to Cole. Several murders and her own aunt’s death team Bailey and Cole in an investigation that leaves them and the whole McKenna clan in danger.
The strongest part of the novel is its examination of what it means to be a new creation in Christ. While Bailey openly states that she is now a Christian and that God saved her life, she does not quite believe that He really has forgiven all that she did in her past. I know many struggle with the grief and guilt of past actions even after accepting the cleansing forgiveness of God. I think Pettrey got this part right in her portrayal of Bailey’s struggle with who she now is and who she once was.
I think this book will definitely appeal to those who like romance with a touch of suspense. I wish there had been a bit more though. And if you like series, Submerged opens up a few more romantic plot lines for future books.
(I received Submerged from Bethany in return for a review. The opinions expressed are mine alone.)

She and her husband attend Believer’s Tabernacle in Wichita.
My Impressions:
I was first introduced to Nancy Mehl by her Ivy Towers cozy mystery series. I liked them very much, so was interested in reading her newest mystery/romantic suspense novel, Inescapable. Inescapable is first and foremost a mystery. It happens to be set in a small, remote Mennonite town reminiscent of Amish communities depicted in books and on TV. The town of Kingdom is the home to some very legalistic Christians as well as some very compassionate and caring Christians. Unfortunately the main character, Lizzie, was born into a family governed by severe rules and harshness. After becoming pregnant, the strain of living with disapproval and censure, proved too much, and Lizzie escaped to Kansas City. Now she finds herself back in Kingdom, again running away from her problems and the threats of a stalker.
I found the characters to be mostly realistic in their responses to situations and other characters. Lizzie’s father is a little over the top in his adherence to rules, but generally believable. The tension and suspense kept me turning the pages. It was a bit ironic that some of the major scenes were set with a backdrop of a snow storm. I finished the book on the beach in 90+ degree heat! But I didn’t notice the heat; Mehl’s narrative pulled me into the story including the wintry feel.
If you like mystery/suspense with a hint of romance, try Inescapable.
Recommended.

Disfigured with a hideous scar from his stepmother, Zeph Walker lives his life in seclusion, cloistering himself in a ramshackle bookstore on the outskirts of town. But Zeph is also blessed with a gift—an uncanny ability to foresee the future,to know peoples’ deepest sins and secrets. He calls it the Telling, but he has abandoned this gift to a life of solitude, unbelief, and despair—until two detectives escort him to the county morgue where he finds his own body lying on the gurney.
On the northern fringes of Death Valley, the city of Endurance is home to llama ranches, abandoned mines, roadside attractions…and the mythical ninth gate of hell. Now, forced to investigate his own murder, Zeph discovers something even more insidious behind the urban legends and small-town eccentricities. Early miners unearthed a megalith—asacred site where spiritual and physical forces converge and where an ancient subterranean presence broods. And only Zeph can stop it.
But the scar on Zeph’s face is nothing compared to the wound on his soul. For not only has he abandoned his gift and renounced heaven, but it was his own silence that spawned the evil. Can he overcome his own despair in time to seal the ninth gate of hell?
His words unlocked something deadly,
And now the silence is killing them.

AND NOW…THE FIRST CHAPTER:
He used to believe everyone was born with the magic, an innate hotline to heaven. Some called it intuition, a sixth sense; others called it the voice of God. Zeph Walker called it the Telling. It was not something you could teach or, even worse, sell- people just had it. Of course, by the time their parents, teachers, and society got through with them, whatever connection they had with the Infinite pretty much vanished. So it was, when Zeph reached his twenty-sixth birthday, the Telling was just an echo.
That’s when destiny came knocking for him.
It arrived in the form of two wind-burnt detectives packing heat and a mystery for the ages. They flashed their badges, said he was needed for questioning. Before he could object or ask for details, they loaded him into the backseat of a mud-splattered Crown Victoria and drove across town to the county morgue. The ride was barely ten minutes, just long enough for Zeph Walker to conclude that, maybe, the magic was alive and well.
“You live alone?” The driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror.
Zeph adjusted his sunglasses. “Yes, sir.”
“I don’t blame you.” The detective looked at his partner, who smirked in response.
Zeph returned his gaze to the passing landscape.
Late summers in Endurance were as beautiful as a watercolor and as hot as the devil’s kitchen. The aspens on the ridge showed gold, and the dogwoods along the creeks had already begun to thin. Yet the arid breeze rising from Death Valley served as an ever-present reminder that beauty always lives in close proximity to hell.
They came to a hard stop in front of a white plaster building. The detectives exited the car, and Zeph followed their cue. A ceramic iguana positioned under a sprawling blue sage grinned mockingly at him. Such was the landscape decor of the county coroner’s building. The structure doubled as a morgue. It occupied a tiny plot of red earth, surrounded by a manicured cactus garden complete with

indigenous flora, bison skulls, and birdbaths. Without previous knowledge, one could easily mistake the building for a cultural center or art gallery. Yet Zeph knew that something other than pottery and Picassos awaited him inside.
The bigger of the two detectives, a vaquero with a nifty turquoise belt buckle and matching bolo tie, pulled the door open and motioned for Zeph to enter. The man had all the charm of a cage fighter.
Zeph wiped perspiration off his forehead and stepped into a small vestibule.
“This way.” The cowboy clomped past, leaving the smell of sweat and cheap cologne.
They led him past an unoccupied desk into a corridor. Bland southwestern prints adorned sterile white walls. The stench of form- aldehyde and decay lingered here, and Zeph’s stomach flip-flopped in response. The hallway intersected another where two lab technicians stood in whispered conversation. They straightened as the detectives approached. After a brief nod from one of the white-jacketed men, Zeph’s escorts proceeded to an unmarked room.
“We got someone fer you to ID.” The cowboy placed his hand on the door and studied Zeph. “You don’t get sick easy, do ya?”
He swallowed. “Depends.”
“Well, if you’re gonna puke, don’t do it on these.” He pointed to a set of well-polished eel-skin boots. “Comprende?”
“No, sir. I mean—yes! Yes, sir.”
The detective scowled, then pushed the door open, waiting. Zeph’s heart was doing double-time. Whose body was he about to
see? What condition was it in? His mind raced with the possibilities. Maybe a friend had suffered a car accident. Although he didn’t have many friends to die in one. Perhaps the Hitcher, that mythical appari- tion who stalked the highway in his childhood, had claimed another victim. More likely Zeph’s old man had finally keeled over. However, he was convinced that his father had stopped living a long time ago.
Zeph drew a deep breath, took two steps into the room, perched his sunglasses on the top his head . . . and froze. In the center, framed under a single oval swath of light, lay a body on a autopsy table—a body that looked strangely familiar.
“Take a good look, Mr. Walker.” The detective’s boots clicked with precision on the yellowed linoleum. He circled the rolling metal
th e te ll i n g | 3
cart, remaining just outside the reach of the fluorescent light. “And maybe you can help us figger this out.”
Zeph remained near the door, hesitant to take another step.
“Go ahead.” The second detective sauntered around the opposite side, gesturing to the body. “He ain’t gonna bite.”
The detectives positioned themselves on either end of the table. They watched him.
A black marble countertop, its surface dulled by a thin blanket of dust, ran the length of one wall. In front of it sat a single wooden stool. The low-hanging lamp bleached the body monochrome. Zeph had seen enough procedurals and CSI knock-offs to know this was not an autopsy room. Perhaps it was used for viewings, maybe occa- sional poker games. But as the detectives studied him, he was starting to wonder if this was an interrogation room. Scalpels, pincers, saws. Oh, what exotic torture devices one might assemble from a morgue! Nevertheless, this particular room appeared to have not been used in a long time. And by the fevered sparkle in their eyes, these men seemed inspired about the possibility of doing so.
Zeph glanced from one man to the other, and then he edged toward the corpse.
Its flesh appeared dull, and the closer he got, the less it actu- ally looked like skin. Perhaps the body had been drained of blood or bleached by the desert sun. He inched closer. Sunken pockets appeared along the torso, and he found himself wondering what could have possibly happened to this person.
The head lay tilted back, its bony jaw upturned, cords of muscle taut across a gangly neck. A white sheet draped the body at the chest, and just above it a single bloodless hole about the size of a nickel notched the sternum. He crept forward, trying to distin- guish the person’s face. First he glimpsed nostrils, then teeth, and then . . . something else.
That something else brought Zeph to a standstill.
How could it be? Build. Facial features. Hair color. This person looked exactly like him. There was even a Star of David tattooed on the right arm, above the bicep—the same as Zeph’s.
What were the chances, the mathematical probabilities, that one human being could look so identical to another? Especially in a town the size of Endurance.
4 | Mike Duran
“Is this . . . ” Zeph’s tone was detached, his eyes fixed on the body. “Is this some kinda joke?”
The detectives hunkered back into the shadows without responding.
Goose bumps rose on Zeph’s forearms as the overhead vent rattled to life, sluicing cool air into the room. He took another step closer to the cadaver until his thigh nudged the table, jolting the stiff and bringing Zeph to a sudden stop. He peered at the bizarre figure.
Their similarities were unmistakable. The lanky torso and append- ages. The tousled sandy hair. Thick brows over deep-set eyes. This guy looks exactly like me!
However, it was one feature—the most defining feature of Zeph Walker’s existence—that left him teetering in disbelief: the four-inch scar that sheared the corpse’s mouth.
Zeph stumbled back, lungs frozen, hand clasped over the ugly scar on his own face.
“Darnedest thing, ain’t it?” The cowboy sounded humored by
Zeph’s astonishment. “Guy’s a spittin’ image of you, Mr. Walker.” Zeph slowly lowered his hand and glanced sideways at the man.
“Yeah. Except I don’t have a bullet hole in my chest.”
The detective’s grin soured, and he squinted warily at Zeph. “Indeed you don’t.” The second man stepped into the light. “But
the real question, young man, is why someone would want to put one there.”

My Impressions:
I have not finished The Telling yet, but so far I really like it. My review to follow in a few days.
Update:
I finally got this book read, no slap towards the book, we have been cleaning out our lake house in anticipation of closing on it next week. All cleaned out, now just have to find places for all the stuff sitting in my dining room! But on to The Telling . . . . I did indeed enjoy Mike Duran’s newest book. I had read TheResurrection and enjoyed the creepy suspense along with the faith message delivered in that novel. The Telling has creepiness in abundance and suspense galore. It also has some wonderful, quirky and flawed characters that you come to love. Even though I hope never to encounter the situation they found themselves in, I found their reactions to events very realistic. Fear, doubt and unworthiness accompany the huge task they face. And there is a great reminder from one of the bad guys that darkness feeds on our fears, lusts, and despair. But his sneer at our feeble faith is a deception. As seen in Zeph, Tamra, and Annie, even the smallest faith can have a big impact when we submit to God. The thing I took away from The Telling is that going it alone is never the answer to life’s problems, big or small. Only God can bring about the victory that we need. I would recommend this book to all that like supernatural elements in their suspense reading.

She is also an avid reader and loves to escape between the covers of a good book. A retired executive assistant, Peg now makes her home in southern Nevada with husband Jim. To See the Sun is Peg’s debut novel, released January 2012
Pregnant and widowed hadn’t been part of her “happily ever after” dream. And now, someone was trying to kill her . . .
Erin Macintyre never expected to be a widow and a new mother in the same year, anymore than she expected mysterious notes, threatening phone calls, and a strange homeless man who seems to know all about her. The thought of raising a child without a father is daunting enough—worse when you have no idea who might want to harm you. Put an old flame into the mix, and her life begins a tailspin into a world she never knew existed.
When P.I. Clay Buchanan, stumbles upon Erin at her husband’s gravesite, he’s totally unprepared for her advanced pregnancy. Her venomous reaction at seeing him, however, was predictable. AND NOW…THE FIRST CHAPTER:
Friday, March 26, late afternoon
What a fantastic day. A bid won. A contract signed. The job of a lifetime that would put Stuart and Macintyre at the top of the construction heap, not just in Las Vegas, but all of southern Nevada.
Whistling, Justin Macintyre pressed the keyless remote of his Cadillac Escalade, tossed his briefcase across the console to the passenger seat and slid behind the wheel.
To top it all off, after seven long years, he and his wife, Erin, were going to have a baby. A baby! He laughed aloud at the overwhelming joy of it.
“Hey, world, I’m going to be a daddy!”
He shifted the SUV into gear and pulled out of the Mt. Charleston Lodge area onto Kyle Canyon Road and headed down the mountain to the Las Vegas Valley below. Despite the successful day, Justin couldn’t banish his worry over a recent discovery of some irregularities in the company’s finances. Nothing concrete, and his Uncle Sebastian, S&M’s CFO, assured him everything was fine. Nevertheless, Justin’s uneasiness had prompted him to send what little proof he had to his long-time friend, Clay Buchanan, a private investigator in Texas.
Preoccupied with his thoughts, he vaguely registered the yellow and black blind curve warning sign. Too late he saw the stalled car across the center line. No time to stop! He spun the wheel to the right.
I’m going too fast! God, help me . . .!
###
Seconds passed and silence settled once more over the mountainside. A shadow emerged from behind a Joshua tree and stepped to the edge of the ravine. After a moment, the form walked to the car in the road and drove away.
###
Erin Macintyre stretched her arms along the balcony’s balustrade of her twenty-seventh-floor condo above the streets of Las Vegas. Beyond that, the lower edge of the setting sun kissed the still snowy peaks of the Spring Mountain Range and Mt. Charleston.
Justin would be home soon.
“Erin, where’s the zester?”
Erin returned to the kitchen. “In the utility drawer.”
“Which is the utility drawer?” Magie Gifford, Erin’s dearest friend, pulled out drawer after drawer.
Erin giggled and reached across Magie’s arm and slid out the utility drawer.
“You changed it.” Magie snatched the zester and bumped the drawer shut with her hip. “That’s not where it was last time.”
Erin wrapped her arms around her friend and hugged. “No, Mags, I didn’t change anything.” She waited a beat. “Can I interest you in a memory enhancement program?”
“Very funny.” Magie pushed Erin aside and proceeded to rub a lemon across the gadget and then whisked the zest into a frothy mixture of olive oil, Italian herbs, and balsamic vinegar. “Okay, just drizzle this over the salad and stick it in the fridge.”
That done, Erin checked on the lasagna in the oven. The garlic toast waited on the foil-lined cookie sheet ready to pop under the broiler. Everything was ready.
Erin glanced at the kitchen clock. “He’s late.”
“Posh. You should know by now how those meetings can drag on.”
“Yeah, I know. It’s just—”
“Get over here, Erin. He’ll be here when he gets here.”
Erin joined her friend in the breakfast nook off the kitchen and adjacent to the balcony. She scooped up a dozing Siamese cat from her chair and sat, settling him back on her lap.
“You spoil that critter.” Magie brushed off the chair cushion before sitting.
“Yeah, I do. But you love him, too. I saw you sneaking him some treats earlier.” Erin smiled. “Not to mention the romp you had with him in the living room when you got here.”
“Busted. But he’s so much fun, aren’t you, Kazimir?”
At the sound of his name, the cat uncoiled, left Erin’s lap and jumped onto Magie’s. She snorted. “So much for protecting my black slacks.”
“Thanks for coming over to help with this meal. I wanted it to be special and I never know when the nausea will hit.” She raised an eyebrow. “But you will leave as soon as Justin gets here.”
“You think he’ll get that bid?”
Erin tapped her heart and nodded. “I know he will.”
The first five descending notes of Welcome to My World sang out in the condo’s foyer. Justin! No, he wouldn’t ring the doorbell. Puzzled, she stepped across the tiled floor and rose on tiptoes to peer through the peephole. She gasped and jumped back.
The doorbell chimed again.
Fingers trembling, Erin released the security lock and opened the door to two uniformed police officers.
“Mrs. Macintyre?”
Erin nodded as Magie moved to her side.
“What is it, officers?”
“I’m afraid there’s been an accident, Mrs. Macintyre. Your husband . . .”
