Book Review: The Breath of Dawn

27 Nov

Corporate turnaround specialist Morgan Spencer, dubbed the “success guru,” has a Midas touch in business. But losing his wife sent him to the brink, and his two-year-old daughter, Livie, is all he’s living for–until they encounter a woman whose trouble just might draw him out of his own.

Four years ago Quinn Reilly did the right thing. Now the man her testimony put in jail is getting out. Though she has put up barriers to protect herself and those around her, she has come to care for the Spencer family, especially the winsome Livie and her mercurial father. Unwilling to put them at risk when the threats begin, she requests something she hopes the super-successful Morgan might be able to deliver.

Fixing problems is what Morgan does best, but his counterproposal takes them in a direction neither is equipped to handle. Determined to confront the past, will they survive to build a future?

Kristen Heitzmann is the bestselling author of over a dozen novels, including Freefall, Halos, A Rush of Wings, and the Christy Award winner Secrets. She and her husband, Jim, and their family live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she serves as worship leader in their church. Visit for more.

My Impressions:

The Breath of Dawn is the third novel featuring the Spencer family. (My review of A Rush of Wings can be read HERE.) The novels can be read as standalones, but why would you want to? They are just sooo good. In this book Heitzmann introduces Quinn Reilly, a woman who has left her family and friends to free herself from the overly strict doctrines of her church and to escape detection by a former church minister who she testified against. Settled in Juniper Springs, Colorado, Quinn is busy building her online sales business and maybe her own life. But Quinn can run, but she cannot hide from the man pursuing her. Not until she makes a marriage of convenience with Morgan Spencer who promises her safety, but not his whole heart.

Heitzmann has created a wonderful romance tinged with suspense and tension. She has also included a dose of spiritual warfare that is down right creepy! At 400+ pages, you will not want this story to end. The best part of the book are the characters, though. Morgan Spencer is larger than life — a great romantic character. Quinn is quiet, yet feisty when needed. And you will absolutely fall in love with Morgan’s pint-sized daughter, Livvie. These are characters that become real to the reader. And while the love story, with its marriage of convenience, seemed a bit out there at first, it really does work in this book.

So if you are looking for a great book for yourself or as a gift for the romance lover in your life, get The Breath of Dawn. Or better yet get all three books featuring the Spencers (including A Rush of Wings and The Still of Night). Perfect for those cold winter nights!

Highly Recommended.
