Top 10 Tuesday — I Would Do Anything For Books . . .

9 Apr

With Meatloaf playing in my head, I pondered just what to write about for this week’s Top 10 Tuesday prompt — outrageous or uncharacteristic things I’ve done to get books. I live a rather predictable, unexciting life. I am not a risk taker or someone who embraces challenges (just ask my family). But when it comes to books . . . . 😉  Although I have never camped out all night to buy a new release, I’ve never stalked an author (at least by the current legal definition), and I have never done anything remotely illegal to obtain a book, I have done several things that are waaay out of my comfort zone. Today’s post follows the progression of my book-obsessed ways.

Top Ways to Get That Book!

I became a blogger. I’d like to say I was all altruistic in my quest to obtain books for my church library. Like, I sacrificed to write a blog to update our collection. Yeah right! While I did add mightily to the library’s shelves during my brief tenure as library lady, let’s not forget that I got to read all those books first!

I crashed attended book conferences and galas. This one was definitely waay out of my comfort zone. Going to a new place populated with authors? I was a timid, shrinking mess. But the lure of not only meeting, but talking to my favorite authors and then getting their books signed was over-powering.

I judged for the Inspy Awards. Now with this one I really did feel like a fraud. 😉 I got to pretend I knew what I was doing when critiquing the merits of finalists. This was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done (and not just in terms of books). I got to meet fabulous bloggers who have lots more insight and smarts when it comes to books. I judged four years and loved every minute of it. If you have a blog, I highly encourage you to apply to be a part of this fantastic group. (Applications for judging this year are closed, but check back for 2020.)

I finally got to attend the Christian Fiction Readers Retreat. Woo hoo! Because this year’s event was held so close to my son and DIL’s home, I could finally attend this fabulous event. What a wonderful day of books, authors, readers, bloggers, and bookish shenanigans. I scored lots of books too! Although I didn’t win any of the prizes *sniff, sniff*, my goody bag was filled to the brim with goodies! There was also a book store (enough said)!

What would you do to get that book?

Top 10 Tuesday — The Back to School Edition

28 Aug

It has been some years since I have had to worry about all things back to school — supply lists, endless forms to sign, open houses, etc. My youngest son is in his final year of law school, but he resists first day pictures. 😉 So all I have is a list of books that loosely align with course titles. And while they probably won’t appear on any syllabus, they are definitely required reading! So whether your nest is empty or you still find yourself in the interminable car riders line, here are some books I recommend you check out. Enjoy!

Be sure to check out all the bloggers’ back to school lists at That Artsy Reader Girl.

My Impressions:

The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse is the 4th installment in the Daughters of The Mayflower series. The historical romance series follows the lives of the women of the Lytton family as their stories intersect with American history. The Patriot Bride features Faith Lytton as the American colonies teeter on the brink of independence and war. Set in colonial Virginia and Boston, the book has a good bit of suspense as well, as Faith puts aside her safety to pursue the Patriot cause. This one is another great addition to the series.

The Patriot Bride features main characters Faith Lytton, a wealthy woman of independent means who was orphaned as a young girl and widowed after just a week of marriage, and Matthew Weber a patriot who disguises his allegiance to infiltrate the highest levels of the Loyalist cause. The two are endearing and engaging characters determined to ignore the dangers to themselves to promote the independence of the colonials. Woodhouse adds the historical figures of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin to give the story an authentic feel. Purely fictional in their interactions with Faith and Matthew, the author drew from documents and letters to remain faithful  to the historical record. I loved the historical details of every day life that Woodhouse incorporates as well. Other characters round out the story that highlighted the role of spies during the Revolutionary War. As in all the books of the series, this one is sweet romance. Although Faith and Matthew were considered past the time of youth and new love for their time (they are both in their early thirties 😉 ), they reach for the chance of marriage and family despite the upheaval of the era. The dangers of their mission to pass along key communications adds suspense to the story. I really liked The Patriot Bride, but there was one loose thread I was disappointed the author did not tie up. It did not, however, alter my enjoyment of the book.

For fans of this series or those who love historical romance set in the colonial American time period, The Patriot Bride is a recommended read. It is easily read as a standalone, but I recommend the entire series as well.

Recommended.
