My Impressions:

The Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse is the 4th installment in the Daughters of The Mayflower series. The historical romance series follows the lives of the women of the Lytton family as their stories intersect with American history. The Patriot Bride features Faith Lytton as the American colonies teeter on the brink of independence and war. Set in colonial Virginia and Boston, the book has a good bit of suspense as well, as Faith puts aside her safety to pursue the Patriot cause. This one is another great addition to the series.

The Patriot Bride features main characters Faith Lytton, a wealthy woman of independent means who was orphaned as a young girl and widowed after just a week of marriage, and Matthew Weber a patriot who disguises his allegiance to infiltrate the highest levels of the Loyalist cause. The two are endearing and engaging characters determined to ignore the dangers to themselves to promote the independence of the colonials. Woodhouse adds the historical figures of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin to give the story an authentic feel. Purely fictional in their interactions with Faith and Matthew, the author drew from documents and letters to remain faithful  to the historical record. I loved the historical details of every day life that Woodhouse incorporates as well. Other characters round out the story that highlighted the role of spies during the Revolutionary War. As in all the books of the series, this one is sweet romance. Although Faith and Matthew were considered past the time of youth and new love for their time (they are both in their early thirties 😉 ), they reach for the chance of marriage and family despite the upheaval of the era. The dangers of their mission to pass along key communications adds suspense to the story. I really liked The Patriot Bride, but there was one loose thread I was disappointed the author did not tie up. It did not, however, alter my enjoyment of the book.

For fans of this series or those who love historical romance set in the colonial American time period, The Patriot Bride is a recommended read. It is easily read as a standalone, but I recommend the entire series as well.
