Honor Bound by Hallee Bridgeman was my book club’s selection this month. It’s the first book in the Love And Honor series, and I really liked it! Lots more good books to read! If you liked it too and want some more reading recs, besides the other books in the series š , then I have you covered. Check out the following suspense-filled novels that include military tie-ins, rescue missions, an African setting, humanitarian aid, and/or terrorists.

Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn’t there–but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can’t take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he’s not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.
When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack–and that her secrets go even deeper than his own–Asher vows to protect her no matter what.Ā

The reactions of my book club members to Burden of Proof by Davis Bunn ranged from didnāt like the ending to didnāt like the book at all! LOL! So, one strike so far for our 2021 selections. Not a promising start to a new year of reading. However, the book did spark a lot of great discussion — a win in my book. I especially liked the answers to the question āif you could go back in time to change something, would you?ā.
What did (or didn’t) you like about Burden of Proof?
I liked Burden of Proof, as did my husband. If you are in that seeming minority too, here are some book recommendations for more great reading. All three novels deal with past regrets and making amends (but no time travel š ).

Happy New Year! I am excited about my book club’s 2021 reading list. Although it is heavy on suspense, it features some wonderful authors that we love, plus a couple of new-to-us writers. We would love for you to join us. Visit our FB Page.
January’s pick is Burden of Proof by Davis Bunn. Although we have read this author before, it was years ago. I can’t wait for everyone to read this thought-provoking novel. All the details are below.
Three weeks after his twenty-third birthday, Ethan missed the chance to save his brother’s life when he was murdered on the steps of the courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida. Ever since that fateful day, Ethan has sensed a deep disconnect between the man he should have been and the one he has become. His days play out a beat too slow, his mind replaying the scene of his failure again and again.
But when his brother’s widow appears, asking for his help in uncovering what was really behind his brother’s death, Ethan is stunned to hear that she and her late husband were involved in a much larger case than he knew–one that threatens the global power structure. As Ethan joins the search for answers, he will enter into his own past–and discover a means of redeeming his future.
Bestselling and award-winning author Davis Bunn invites you into a world of intrigue as a man held captive by his failure learns how to move forward with hope.
Davis Bunn is a four-time Christy Award-winning, best-selling author who serves as writer-in-residence at Regent’s Park College, the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom.
Defined by readers and reviewers as a “wise teacher,” “gentleman adventurer,” “consummate writer,” and “Renaissance man,” his work in business took him to over 40 countries around the world, and his books have sold more than seven million copies in sixteen languages.
Davis Bunn has long been one of my must-read authors. His latest novel, Burden of Proof, seals that distinction. A little different from his previous suspense novels, I believe this is my favorite of all time. Highly recommended!

My Impressions:
As I closed the cover of Burden of Proof, I knew that this book would stay with me for a long while. I have read a lot of Davis Bunn’s novels — all genres — and liked them all, but this one is by the far the best I have read. The complex plotting and characterization, plus the numerous themes and questions arising from it, make it a highly recommended read.
First things first — I wasn’t sure how a book that opens with time travel would go over with my book club. (Burden of Proof is my group’s January 2021 pick.) I needn’t have worried, it has all the things my members love — a gripping story, flawed, yet relatable characters, and enough fodder for a long discussion. Besides the time travel theories and the wisdom of doing such a thing, I anticipate great conversations on the twisting plot, the growth of the characters, and the value of giving and taking second chances. Oh, yes, this book has it all! Even the time and setting are developed to perfectly compliment the narrative. I know I am gushing, but I loved everything about this book.
Burden of Proof solidifies Davis Bunn as one of my must-read authors. I am so glad I get a chance to discuss this book with a group of reader friends. If you choose this book, bring someone along for the journey. You will have to talk about it!
Highly recommended.
Audience: adults.
(I purchased this book from Amazon. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)
Happy Friday! I am not getting a lot of reading done this week — my family has been here and I have been busy baking, cooking, and following after my grandbaby! š But when the dust settles, Burden of Proof by Davis Bunn will be the next book up. Are you finding time for good books? I’d love to read your first line.

This week’s Top 10 Tuesday is a Halloween Freebie. If it’s not too early for you, I have a list of books that feature outbreaks and epidemics — real life scary! And because they are all Christian or clean fiction, it’s not all doom and gloom. There are a couple of historical novels that feature the Spanish Flu, some mystery and suspense that explore potential viruses/bacteria and other biological agents that get loose, and a YA dystopian that explores the aftermath of an epidemic. A couple of the authors are even doctors. If the subject isn’t too frightening for you, I hope you find a great book.
It is only a matter of time before there is a flu pandemic with the potential to kill billions. Or so wealthy entrepreneur Lyle Lynstrum believes. That is why he is funding research into transgenics – the mechanism by which viruses can jump the species barrier – at a high security lab on a tidal island off the North Devon coast.
A suspiciously rapid turnover of staff has him worried. He sends in scientist Katie Flanagan as an undercover lab technician. Something is clearly very wrong, but before Katie can get to the bottom of what is going on, a colleague is struck down by a mysterious illness. Has the safety of the facility been compromised, allowing a deadly virus to escape? Katie begins to suspect that the scientists are as deadly as the diseases – and that her cover has been blown.
Then the island is cut off by high seas and a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse begins . . .

Dr. Chad Lawrence, an expert in his field . . . and Heatherās husband. The Lawrencesā marriage has been on the rocks since Chad announced his career took precedence over his wife and future family and moved out.

Happy Tuesday! Today That Artsy Reader Girl is challenging bloggers to come up with band names based on book titles. I’m musically challenged — I can’t sing and I never know who sings a song. But I do know books, and titles that intrigue me I believe would make awesome names of bands — country bands, heavy metal, 80s cover bands, etc. So here is my attempt. My list draws from books on my TBR shelves and includes 3 titles that are actual band names! Hope you find one to love!
I have come to the sad realization that I cannot possibly read all the books. š I never dreamed that day would come. Now that doesn’t mean I won’t try! š But still, so many deserve to be read and read NOW. That’s where friends and family come in. I received a surprise copy of Outbreak by Davis Bunn a month or two ago and was so disappointed that I could not dive into it right then and there. But when my DH said give me a book to read, I handed it to him without a moment’s hesitation. You will find a few of his thoughts below the book blurb and author info.

Thoughts on Outbreak from my husband:
A quick and easy read, Outbreak has the right amount of suspense to keep the reader engaged. And there is little romance to get in the way š . Characters are generally likable, but there are plenty of bad guys to keep the story interesting. The subject matter — deadly algae blooms and viruses — was unique and interesting. And the Asheville, North Carolina setting brought back memories of trips to that city. My husband’s verdict — recommended! Although, he did say it wasn’t as good as To Kill A Mockingbird (his favorite book), but definitely better than Moby Dick. LOL!
