Little Italy in San Diego, once a thriving fishing community, has blossomed into a prominent tourist destination. Nestled in the heart of this vibrant neighborhood, both travelers and residents find the Tiepolo Mercato a favorite spot to stop and shop. Ezio and Benedette Tiepolo are the proprietors of the Mercato, while their daughter owns Macaroni on Wheels, the catering company located directly next door.

There’s more than pasta cooking in the Macaroni on Wheels kitchen. Meet Terza Tiepolo, a feisty Italian caterer who fills her free time solving crime. She belongs to a local murder mystery book club, and leads the other participants in their monthly whodunnit contest.

Terza also works diligently to grow her catering business. But when a prominent doctor hires Terza’s company to cater a dinner party, she never expects murder to be on the menu. The prestigious bayfront event should enhance the Macaroni on Wheels portfolio, and Terza anticipates meeting many potential new clients. On the day of the party, Terza arrives early to prepare, only to discover her grand expectations are as dead as the body on the kitchen floor.

Fans of cozy mysteries will revel in solving the murder along with Terza, and will appreciate her zest for life. Readers will also treasure the introduction to her vibrant Italian relatives. They will enjoy getting to know the Tiepolo family, and will smile at the special relationship Terza has with her mother and father. The fun never stops when the animated relatives join together each Sunday for dinner. Consider this your personal invitation!

Excerpt

“Are you positive he’s dead?”

Ranger nodded.

Moheenie screamed. “What do we do?”

“We call the police,” Terza and Ranger spoke in unison.

Ranger stood to remove the phone from his back pocket. “I’ll call them,” he said while moving away from the body.

Terza clenched her fists. “Maybe we should check the house. What if he was just murdered, and we caught them in the act?”

“Ranger, hold on!” Moheenie’s trembling hand reached out for her husband. “Terza’s right. What if he was murdered and they’re still in the house? We need to check it first.”

“You two stay here. I’ll be right back.”

“Be careful,” Terza said.

“Very careful,” Moheenie added.

They waited in silence for Ranger to return. Moments later he entered the room with his thumb up.

“You can take a breath. The house is clear. Now I really need to call the police.” Ranger walked toward the front door to make his call.

Good Gracious! Company’s Coming Cheese Straws

Ingredients:

1 pound (4 cups) freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese (gotta be sharp!)

1 cup salted butter (yes to salted)

1-1/2 teaspoons salt

4 cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

1/8 teaspoon black pepper (or white if preferred)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line your baking sheets with parchment or silicone sheets. Break out your box grater and go to town grating that sharp cheddar cheese on the fine side of the grater. When finished, (usually when your arm starts to hurt), cover and let it come to room temperature.

Add the butter and cheese to a stand mixer bowl and paddle beat for about ten minutes until creamed together.

Add salt, flour, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper l and mix on medium speed until fully combined.

Transfer dough to a cookie press fitted with a star tip (if you want your straws to look fancy). Or you can hand-roll long thin strips and cut into uniform lengths (about 3 inches) with a knife.

Bake for 12-14 minutes until lightly-browned. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Q & A with Linda Kozar

Many authors say that they have always been a writer. When did you come to realize this?

As a child I realized that reading and writing came easily to me. In reading groups at school I used to get in trouble because I had already read ahead to the end and when it was my time to read a section out loud, I had no idea where we were. I read voraciously and often didn’t like the endings to some stories. So, I wrote my own.

Were there any obstacles faced in your journey to publication?

Always. I had always dreamed of writing “a” book. Just one. I thought if you wrote just one book, that would be a dream fulfilled and I could cross that off my list. It never occurred to me that I could write more than one. Anyway, I wrote personal interest stories for newspapers and got paid something like $35 an article. Peanuts. But I really enjoyed writing them and it was a good training ground for me. Eventually, I started working up the confidence to convince myself that if I’d written so many stories, I could certainly write a book. That was the first obstacle. I prayed and talked to God a lot about this, and felt the call in my spirit that this was what I was supposed to do, and be. Once you believe in yourself, the next mountain to climb is convincing other people that your writing has value. Agents. Editors. Readers. This is a continuous obstacle in a writer’s life. You might be the darling of a publishing house one day, but the next day someone else is hired, or your sales aren’t big enough, or the house decides to cancel a line of books, and you’re out on your keister.

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your book?

The title came out of the warm greeting Southern children get from Southern mamas and grandmas and aunts and neighbors and friends of the family. Gimme Some Sugar means you’re about to get a big kiss on the cheek and a hug. And after that, you’re probably going to be offered something to eat (all of which is what I do now). The title reflects those warm feelings of being loved and cared for, like God loves and cares for us.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing Gimme Some Sugar?

I want readers to open Gimme Some Sugar and instantly feel the warmth of tender loving, nostalgic memories, of family, of friends, of kinder times. My desire is for them to have a good laugh, and most importantly, to read something of weight and reflection to inspire them in their daily walk. Devotions are a wonderful kick-start to your day, and hopefully a reminder to open your Bible and study further.

What’s next?

A second book in the series titled Sweet Tea & Thee will be coming out either at the end of 2024 or early 2025. I finished writing the manuscript in January and it’s almost finished going through edits. I’m really excited about this next book.

    About The Author

As a former fighter pilot, stealth pilot, and tactical deception officer, James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. He is the award-winning author of thrillers, mysteries, and fantasies for adults and children, and he is the developer of Lightraider Academy games. As a pastor’s kid in Colorado Springs, he guinea-pigged every youth discipleship program of the 1980s, but the one that engaged him and shaped him most as a Christ-follower and Kingdom warrior was DragonRaid, by Dick Wulf—the genesis of the Lightraider world.

    More from James

There and Back Again: A Game?

The transition from book to game and back again is no easy thing. I’ve been on a steep learning curve since the day I started writing Wolf Soldier, the first book in the Lightraider Academy trilogy. Lion Warrior is the third.

I should walk back a step. Lightraiders is a game. Did you know that? It began as DragonRaid, a 1980s fantasy adventure game designed for teaching Biblical learning and discipleship. DragonRaid had a huge influence on my Christian walk in my teens. I now have the honor of carrying the concepts designed by the game’s original creator, Dick Wulf, to a new generation through games and stories. Before he went on to be with the Lord, Dick was kind enough to write a foreword for Wolf Soldier.

The task, when it came to me, was monumental: take a highly allegorical game with isolated location details and expand it into a full-realm book series while also building a new version of the game designed for today’s teens and families. By His grace, God placed men and women in my path who came alongside me to help—fellow believers who are creators from the realms of Tolkien, Star Wars, DC Comics, and Disney. Without them, it could not have been done.

We’ve been building the game in the background for three years. At the same time, the books have served as a transition from the old to the new. Lion Warrior completes that transition, and the book and the new Lightraiders Adventure Bible System game for teens will release almost simultaneously.

If you read through the series starting with Wolf Soldier, you may get a feel for this transition. The first book is more allegorical and tightly focused, much like the original DragonRaid game. Fantasy terms used in that story draw from the original game, with only a few new terms introduced. Bear Knight begins to broaden that perspective. It stretches past allegory and introduces several new ideas that you’ll find in the new Lightraiders game. In Lion Warrior, my hope is that you’ll finally have a picture of the fully developed realm from the Liberated Land in the south to the frozen islands in the far north of the Dragon Lands. And that story is fully steeped in the new game with terms and game mechanics slipped in for astute readers to find.

So, we’ve come full circle. DragonRaid became the story world in Wolf Solder. Then, as I and the team God sent to me rebuilt the game for a new generation, new elements found their way into Bear Knight. And now we have Lion Warrior, fully based on the new Lightraiders discipleship game. If you read the full trilogy and check out the game, I hope you’ll see it all growing together.

I do love the idea of game to story or vice versa. Are there other game/story combinations you love?

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Beauty for Ashes, Rebecca and Mr. Pike come upon Perry Quinn after Perry’s ranch has been burned to the ground.

    “This way,” Mr. Pike said.

As they neared the cabin, he slowed. “I must warn you, he’s alive, but barely.”

Rebecca rounded the corner, and her legs grew weak. Morgan! Her heart screamed as she stumbled forward. Mr. Pike steadied her.

She closed her eyes. This was not Morgan. The poor charred man was Perry Quinn. A rancher. A man in desperate need of help. Just like those poor soldiers she helped during the war. Just like Morgan when someone tried to nurse him back to health.

    Fear. Doubt. Insecurity. Fear.

She straightened her back and lifted her chin. She would do what she could to help the poor man.

Rebecca stroked her thumb across Perry’s hand as she wondered what would happen to him. Would he recover? If he did, what would he do? It sounded like he had nothing left on his ranch and no family. Who would care for him and nurse him back to health?

If you like these authors, you’ll enjoy this book too: Tracie Peterson, Tamera Alexander, Karen Witemeyer, Lacy Williams, Jodi Hedlund, Misty M. Beller

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Joy for Mourning, Grace is headed to the freight office to ship some donations for the charity she runs. She is caught off guard when a stranger is working there.

When Grace stepped into the freight office, she did not see Ira at the counter, so she rang the obnoxious cowbell. She found it annoying, but it seemed like the teamsters could hear the thing even when working in the back storeroom.

“Ira,” she said when she heard footsteps down the hall. “It’s Grace. I’m here about shipping…”

A tall man, who was most definitely not Ira, appeared from the back. My what wonderful blue eyes. They sparkled and reflected the light. Such a nice contrast to his lightly tanned skin. He was thin but still well built. His wavy light brown hair flopped over part of his forehead. A dimple in his chin added to his handsome appearance that nearly stole her breath away. When he smiled, she let out a quick breath and willed her heart to stop slamming into her chest.

“I don’t believe we’ve met,” she said, trying to recover. “I’m Grace Talbert.”

His smile dimmed. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

She glanced down at her dress. No, it was the blue dress she wore, the same blue as his amazing eyes.

He cleared his throat and rushed to explain. “I saw you. The funeral.”

“You,” she whispered. The man in the wagon who passed by—the one she could not stop thinking about. She looked away, lest her gaze revealed her thoughts.

When Mel’s life is threatened, can Alex save her in time?

If you like these authors, you’ll enjoy this book too: Tracie Peterson, Tamera Alexander, Karen Witemeyer, Lacy Williams, Jodi Hedlund, Misty M. Beller

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Oaks of Justice, Alex had just stopped by opposing counsel’s office to meet Mr. Mel Larson. Except Melissa “Mel” may have misled him. When he leaves, her boss Virgil questions her odd behavior.

Mel let out a long breath.

“What was that all about?” Virgil asked.

“He thinks I’m your secretary. I never gave him my first name.”

Virgil cocked his head to one side. “Oh, I see where this is going.”

“You and I both know our client is innocent and the crux of this case is mistaken identity from what you told me earlier,” she said. “What better way to illustrate this point to the court than to show that our esteemed District Attorney is as susceptible as the next person to mistake someone’s identity?”

“Are you sure you want to do that, Mel? He is the District Attorney.”

    “Yes.”

“Alright. For this to be fully effective, you’re going to have to sit in the gallery for jury selection and let me lead it.”

    “That is an excellent idea.”

Pick up Oaks of Justice to see if Mel follows through with her plan.

He kept his arm behind her back and lifted her to her feet. Then without another thought, he  pulled her into an embrace, cradling her against his chest.

He couldn’t help it. She could’ve died.

So that’s what he said as he caressed her silky hair with his thumb. “I thought you might be dead.”

She leaned her head back and brought her gaze up to his. Something shimmered in her emerald eyes. Tears? Was she hurt?

“I’m sorry.” He loosened his hold around her, lowering his hands to gently brush down her arms. “Are you injured?”

She shook her head, watching him with what looked like wonder. Maybe her head injury had left her a little confused.

His hand went to her face, cupping her cheek as his thumb neared one of the red marks.

“Your face is scratched. Are you sure you aren’t hurt anywhere else?”

“Pretty sure.” Her gaze didn’t leave his.

She was breathtaking. Twigs in her mussed ponytail and scratches and dirt smudges on her face couldn’t do a thing to diminish her stunning beauty. Or the effect she seemed to be having on him.

Rune has grown up all of her life in the mountainous northern nation of Kansanai. As granddaughter of the Senior Elder, she has been a devout believer of the Vihishki gods her whole life. Yet, when a prophet challenges the Vihishki gods against his Aivan, the One Truth, everything she thought she knew is turned upside down. Will she be able to let go of the life she thought she deserved for something far greater than what she could have ever imagined?

Rolf goes through the motions of everyday life in the southern nation of Etalentin. Yet, his routine is disrupted when a voice claiming to be the one true God speaks to him. Listening to his heart, he follows Aivan, but he is thrown temptation after temptation on his journey. Will Rolf be able to resist the temptations in order to fulfill Aivan’s plan for him?

    More from Kayla

Working in education, it often is disheartening to see how much darkness bombards today’s youth. With Aivan: The One Truth, the forthcoming Chronicles of the One Truth series, and all my writing, my primary goal is to offer young readers a beacon of hope in this dark world. Alluding to many stories and lessons found in the Old Testament, Aivan is a fast-paced novella designed to capture young readers and pull them into the world of the Great Continent. It is my biggest prayer with this book that Rune and Rolf’s journey in this fantasy narrative will serve as a guiding light to lead readers of all ages to seek truth in our reality—the truth that can only be found through our one true God.

One of my current projects is developing a companion devotional for Aivan: The One Truth as well as the full-length novels that will be part of the complete Chronicles of the One Truth series (which will be released at a later date). The devotional would be a tool for parents, teachers, and pastors to use along with the book to help young readers understand the themes and biblical parallels.

Two major themes within the novella center around identity and purpose. Rune’s struggles with disappointment with shattered dreams and the heartache of feeling lost, alone, and unfulfilled are struggles that are arguably universal. In looking at Rune’s journey, young readers as well as adult readers can recognize the real-world challenges of identity: Who exactly are we? In today’s world, there is a constant battle between God and society. How can one embrace their identity as a child of God when the world demands us to rage and rebel against that title?

In Exodus 3:11 (NIV) Moses asks God, “Who am I?” after he is told to go to the Pharaoh to rescue the Israelites. God tells Moses, “I am with you,” (Exodus 3:12, NIV). Similar to Moses’ walk of faith, Rune, like us all, must learn to accept the truth. Like Aivan in the fantasy novella, our God, the one true God, is always with us. We may not immediately—or ever—understand His plan; however, through Him we are whole, redeemed, and loved. And in that, we have great purpose.

I pray that whoever reads Aivan: The One Truth finds parallels to our own world and finds solace knowing that we are because God is the great “I Am.”

In my upcoming companion devotional, I will explore the concepts of identity and purpose from a biblical perspective. Anyone who wants updates on this, should follow my blog and subscribe to my newsletter to be the first to know!

    Q & A with Kayla E. Green

Was there a special someone, such as a teacher, parent, or other relative, who encouraged you to pursue writing?

I have been oh so blessed with numerous sources of encouragement throughout my life overall and in terms of my pursuit of writing.

The first person who comes to mind is my mother, Terri. She read to me and my siblings every day during our childhood, instilling within me a love for books from an early age. But she also would take time to engage with me and ask me questions when I decided to make up my own stories before I learned to read.

I also owe a lot of thanks to my art teacher who I worked with from 2nd grade through high school graduation, Mrs. Smith. She didn’t encourage me to pursue writing directly; however, she encouraged me to pursue creative endeavors. In addition, she gave me some advice when I was young that, though simple, has had a profound impact on me. She told me: “Trust yourself—you know more than you give yourself credit for. And if you mess up, you are smart enough to clean it up” (paraphrased as it was about 15 years ago).

In addition to my art teacher, my journalism teacher in high school, Mrs. Peregoy, also was a huge encouragement. She helped me hone my writing skills and truly helped shape me into the person I am today. In fact, she went from a teacher to mentor to friend—she was a bridesmaid in my wedding!

My sister, Kari, and friends, Rafael and Hannah, have also been big encouragers always willing to read and offer me feedback. My husband, Matthew, dad, Cliff, brother, Tyler, and my grandparents are also continuously supportive of my writing endeavors. I am blessed to have so much love and support!

Why did you choose the fantasy genre?

I love magic and whimsy within fantasy books, and I believe that played a role in my own stories being primarily fantasy. Aivan: The One Truth is a young adult novella, but even advanced middle grade readers will enjoy it, too. There’s so much room for creativity in the worlds you create and how you approach real world relatability in fantasy—it’s just so fun!

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your latest novel?

Simply, the book was a story placed on my heart by God. I had a general idea for a story following a young girl who had her life planned out only for the plan to fall to pieces. I spent a lot of time crafting this girl’s personality and character, even naming her Rune. However, I didn’t exactly know how to tell her story. One Sunday at church, the sermon focused on Elijah and the prophets of Baal. The passages in 1 Kings recounting how God set the altar on fire when called on by Elijah not only influenced an important scene within Aivan: The One Truth but it led to an “ah-ha” moment for me. I began piecing together details of the Great Continent and Rune’s world which has several Old Testament story influences.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing one of your novels?

It is my prayer that with reading Aivan: The One Truth, readers walk away comforted by the fact that we were made resilient and we can rebuild when our plans fall apart, empowered knowing that the one true God in our own world loves them, and filled with hope at the reminder that light will always prevail over darkness.

Readers always want to know what is next for an author. Do you have any works in progress you can
    share about?

I am happy to share! I am wrapping up some major edits on the first book in a new young adult fantasy duology, The Tritonia Chronicles. The first book is titled The Goodness of Unicorns. The final blurb has not been released yet but I will share that it will be a must read for fans of noble bright fantasy narratives with no magic but elements of blessings and unique giftings, strong sister bonds, friends to lovers and chosen one tropes, and stories that show light prevailing over darkness! The book is being published with Ambassador International. Be sure to follow both me and AI on Instagram for updates (@ambassadorintl @theunicornwriter93).

The Missing Link JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for The Missing Link by Natasha D. Frazier, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

    About The Book

    The Missing Link

    Title: The Missing Link
    Series: The Langston Sisters #3
    Author: Natasha D. Frazier
    Publisher: Encouraging Works
    Release Date: November 28, 2023
    Genre: Romantic Suspense

Now that her sisters, Crystal and Ava, are moving on with their lives, it’s time for Layla Langston to do the same.

Experiencing burnout and lack of purpose, Layla is ready for a change and leaves Langston Brands to live life on her own terms.

She dares to pursue her own dreams–dreams that lead her to start a new career as a journalist and thrust her in the middle of a murder investigation that just may put her life in danger.

Mason Sterling’s goal is twofold — to get the best story possible and make Houston’s local congresswoman pay for her crimes. What he doesn’t want or need is anyone to tag along in the process. But when his boss hires Layla, and Mason is tasked with being her mentor, fighting their growing emotional bond is the least of his problems.

He’ll have to keep her safe to make a future with her a possibility.

    Excerpt

Simon leaned forward and braced his weight on the table. “This investigation of yours could get ugly and make the wrong people mad. You need to watch your back on this one, and with Ms. Langston by your side, hopefully, you’ll be able to keep a level head.”

Mason was already beginning to regret accepting the mentorship responsibility.

Simon lifted the phone receiver. “Please send in Ms. Langston.”

A few minutes later, a soft tap sounded on Simon’s doorframe. “Here’s Ms. Langston,” Ms. Carey, Simon’s administrative assistant, announced. The white-haired woman turned away without another word.

Simon waved her inside. “Layla, please come on in.”

She strolled into Simon’s office and reached across the desk to shake his hand. “It’s nice to see you again, Mr. Taylor.”

“Call me Simon. And this,” Simon gestured toward Mason, “is Mason Sterling. He’ll be your mentor. I’ll leave it up to Mason to do what he does. He can help get you started.”

She turned to Mason with an outstretched hand and a smile as wide as Simon’s laptop screen.

    “I’m Layla Langston.”

Mason turned his attention to eager, expectant eyes. Soft, welcoming eyes. Eyes that he found hard to look away from. He swallowed his lack of enthusiasm, stood, accepted her hand, and squeezed, probably a little too hard. In his defense, the connection he felt upon contact caught him off guard, and instead of letting go, he tightened his grip. “Mason Sterling.”

“Nice to meet you.” Layla smiled and loosened her grip, an unspoken way to say, Let me go.

“And it’s nice to meet you, too. Come follow me so we can get you set up.”

He’d make an exception to his working alone rule this one time as long as Layla Langston didn’t get in his way. Although Simon needed a story and Layla needed to learn the ropes, Mason needed space to navigate his new life.

Natasha believes that writing is one of her purposes and contributions to the world. She feels accomplished when she can get a few words written and like blah when life gets in the way. Her hope is that at the end of every novel, readers will feel like they’ve been wrapped in a cozy blanket with a mug of their favorite coffee/tea/warm drink.

When she isn’t reading or writing, she is likely watching movies with her family. Natasha resides in Richmond, TX with her husband, Eddie Frazier, Jr. and their three children, Eden, Ethan, and Emilyn. Her greatest joy and commitment is to her family who she hopes to inspire above all else. One of her many mottos in life is: Faith removes limitations. Reading Romance Month — Dual Timelines

    28 Aug

We have come to the end of August and the official end of Read A Romance Month. Of course, you know the romance reading will continue no matter the date on the calendar. 😉 My last installment features novels with dual timelines or split-time, as it is often called. By virtue of the genre, authors explore history most often with a contrasting contemporary story. While not all are strictly romance novels — history and mystery are standard — but hope and, of course, love play big roles. You will find at least one happily-ever-after in all of the books. I found all of these stories intriguing and unique. I hope one of them will pique your interest.

The Dress Shop on King Street by Ashley Clark

As Harper rethinks her own future, long-hidden secrets about Millie’s past are brought to light.

In 1946, Millie Middleton — the daughter of an Italian man and a Black woman —  boarded a train and left Charleston to keep half of her heritage hidden. She carried with her two heirloom buttons and the dream of owning a dress store. She never expected to meet a charming train jumper who changed her life forever . . . and led her yet again to a heartbreaking choice about which heritage would define her future.

Now, together, Harper and Millie return to Charleston to find the man who may hold the answers they seek . . . and a chance at the dress shop they’ve both dreamed of. But it’s not until all appears lost that they see the unexpected ways to mend what frayed between the seams.

Hidden Among The Stars by Melanie Dobson

The year is 1938, and as Hitler’s troops sweep into Vienna, Austrian Max Dornbach promises to help his Jewish friends hide their most valuable possessions from the Nazis, smuggling them to his family’s summer estate near the picturesque village of Hallstatt. He enlists the help of Annika Knopf, his childhood friend and the caretaker’s daughter, who is eager to help the man she’s loved her entire life. But when Max also brings Luzia Weiss, a young Jewish woman, to hide at the castle, it complicates Annika’s feelings and puts their entire plan—even their very lives—in jeopardy. Especially when the Nazis come to scour the estate and find both Luzia and the treasure gone.

Eighty years later, Callie Randall is mostly content with her quiet life, running a bookstore with her sister and reaching out into the world through her blog. Then she finds a cryptic list in an old edition of Bambi that connects her to Annika’s story . . . and maybe to the long-buried story of a dear friend. As she digs into the past, Callie must risk venturing outside the safe world she’s built for a chance at answers, adventure, and maybe even new love.

The Lady in Residence by Allison Pittman

Young widow Hedda Krause checks into the Menger Hotel in 1915 with a trunk full of dresses, a case full of jewels, and enough cash to pay for a two-month stay, which she hopes will be long enough to meet, charm, and attach herself to a new, rich husband. Her plans are derailed when a ghostly apparition lures her into a long, dark hallway, and Hedda returns to her room to find her precious jewelry has been stolen. She falls immediately under a cloud of suspicion with her haunting tale, but true ghost enthusiasts bring her expensive pieces of jewelry in an attempt to lure the ghost to appear again.

In 2017, Dini Blackstone is a fifth-generation magician, who performs at private parties, but she also gives ghost walk tours, narrating the more tragic historical events of San Antonio with familial affection. Above all, her favorite is the tale of Hedda Krause who, in Dini’s estimation, succeeded in perpetrating the world’s longest con, dying old and wealthy from her ghost story. But then Dini meets Quinn Carmichael, great-great-grandson of the detective who originally investigated Hedda’s case, who’s come to the Alamo City with a box full of clues that might lead to Hedda’s exoneration. Can Dini see another side of the story that is worthy of God’s grace?

The London House by Katherine Reay

Uncovering a dark family secret sends one woman through the history of Britain’s World War II spy network and glamorous 1930s Paris to save her family’s reputation.

Caroline Payne thinks it’s just another day of work until she receives a call from Mat Hammond, an old college friend and historian. But pleasantries are cut short. Mat has uncovered a scandalous secret kept buried for decades: In World War II, Caroline’s British great-aunt betrayed family and country to marry her German lover.

Determined to find answers and save her family’s reputation, Caroline flies to her family’s ancestral home in London. She and Mat discover diaries and letters that reveal her grandmother and great-aunt were known as the “Waite sisters.” Popular and witty, they came of age during the interwar years, a time of peace and luxury filled with dances, jazz clubs, and romance. The buoyant tone of the correspondence soon yields to sadder revelations as the sisters grow apart, and one leaves home for the glittering fashion scene of Paris, despite rumblings of a coming world war.

Each letter brings more questions. Was Caroline’s great-aunt actually a traitor and Nazi collaborator, or is there a more complex truth buried in the past? Together, Caroline and Mat uncover stories of spies and secrets, love and heartbreak, and the events of one fateful evening in 1941 that changed everything.

In this rich historical novel from award-winning author Katherine Reay, a young woman is tasked with writing the next chapter of her family’s story. But Caroline must choose whether to embrace a love of her own and proceed with caution if her family’s decades-old wounds are to heal without tearing them even further apart.

It was called “The Titanic of the South.” The luxury steamship sank in 1838 with Savannah’s elite on board; through time, their fates were forgotten–until the wreck was found, and now their story is finally being told in this breathtaking novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis.

When Savannah history professor Everly Winthrop is asked to guest-curate a new museum collection focusing on artifacts recovered from the steamship Pulaski, she’s shocked. The ship sank after a boiler explosion in 1838, and the wreckage was just discovered, 180 years later. Everly can’t resist the opportunity to try to solve some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the devastating night of its sinking.

Everly’s research leads her to the astounding history of a family of eleven who boarded the Pulaski together, and the extraordinary stories of two women from this family: a known survivor, Augusta Longstreet, and her niece, Lilly Forsyth, who was never found, along with her child. These aristocratic women were part of Savannah’s society, but when the ship exploded, each was faced with difficult and heartbreaking decisions.
