She pressed her lips together in that pinched expression. “If you’ve truly returned in connection with me for some unknown reason, then I suggest you leave again and forget about me as you did before. We’ll all be better off.”

He stood, quickly, so she wouldn’t have enough warning to leave.

She barely got in one step back in the second it took for him to stand in front of her, forcing her to look up at him instead.

“I never forgot you, Vicks. Never.” 

She stared up at him, frozen with her elegant brows pushed together and a battle of emotions playing out in her eyes. Fear, confusion, anger, and what he hoped was longing. For him.

She spun on her heels and left, the fear or anger apparently winning out. For now.

“I don’t have much patience for cat and mouse, Miss Weston, so let me be blunt. Is someone threatening you?”

Spring felt the blood drain from her face and turned her head away with the foolish hope he wouldn’t see. Why did he have to ask such direct questions? She didn’t want to lie.

“I know whoever it is has probably told you that something bad will happen if you cooperate with the police. But I can make sure that won’t happen. I can protect you.”

The phone vibrated again.

She closed her eyes, the device heavy in her hand. The memory of the pain two nights ago pierced through her.

The texter had promised worse. She didn’t want to find out what that was.

“It’s not your job to protect me, Sergeant.” She met his gaze in time to see his green eyes cool. “I can’t help you with the case. I’ve told you all I can.”

“I just need you to breathe for me, okay, Eddie?” The woman’s tone stayed even and calm. “The ambulance will be here soon, and we’ll get you help with the pain.”

Branson stepped to her side, where he could see she held Kicker’s wrist in her slim fingers, apparently checking his pulse. Was she a medic instead? Her bounty of curls blocked her face from view.
