Book Review: Anchor in The Storm

25 May

Anchor-in-the-Storm-emailjpgOne plucky female pharmacist + one high-society naval officer = romance—and danger.

For plucky Lillian Avery, America’s entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. The challenges of her new job energize her. But society boy Ensign Archer Vandenberg’s attentions only annoy–even if he is her brother’s best friend.

During the darkest days of the war, Arch’s destroyer hunts German U-boats in vain as the submarines sink dozens of merchant ships along the East Coast. Still shaken by battles at sea, Arch notices his men also struggle with their nerves–and with drowsiness. Could there be a link to the large prescriptions for sedatives Lillian has filled? The two work together to answer that question, but can Arch ever earn Lillian’s trust and affection?

Sarah Sundin brings World War II to life, offering readers an intense experience they won’t soon forget.

SSundin-312Sarah Sundin is the author of eight historical novels, including Anchor in the Storm. Her novel Through Waters Deep was named to Booklist’s “101 Best Romance Novels of the Last 10 Years”, and her novella I’ll Be Home for Christmas in Where Treetops Glisten was a finalist for the 2015 Carol Award. A mother of three, Sarah lives in California, works on-call as a hospital pharmacist, and teaches Sunday school.

My Impressions:

For a romance featuring the Greatest Generation, your must-read author is Sarah Sundin. With the perfect blending of historical detail, complex characters and well-crafted story, Anchor in The Storm is another recommended read. Sarah’s novels just keep getting better and better!

Anchor in The Storm again takes place in Boston in the early days of WWII. The Navy is struggling to perform its duties amidst the terror of the German U-Boat. Sarah’s historical research is spot-on as she creates a world readying for war. Old and new characters are featured in the novel with the story focusing on Lillian Avery and Arch Vandenberg. Lillian and Arch are not your typical romantic characters. Lillian is an amputee in a day when she is labelled crippled. Arch suffers from PTSD, something that even in today’s modern world is at best misunderstood and at worst ignored or denied. Both struggle with the perceptions of others and this affects their emotions and actions in almost every way. They try to overcome hardship and fears through their own power, ignoring the strength that God provides in weakness.  The plot contains elements of mystery and suspense that kept me turning the pages and drew the characters closer together. Yay! — history, mystery and romance all in one volume!

Sarah always weaves a message of faith and hope in her novels. In Anchor in The Storm, characters and readers are reminded that Jesus is the anchor of their lives in the midst of any storm. While life today may not be like that of 1942 America, uncertainty and anxiety still make their way into our lives. I needed to hear that message again. Viewing disability through the eyes of those in this story was sometimes painful. No politically correct responses here! But it made me think of those unspoken views that I may hold when coming face to face with those different from me. Bravo, Sarah, for making me rethink my own reactions and perceptions.

Anchor in The Storm exceeded my expectations, making this novel my favorite so far from a very talented author. So if you are looking for a book to take you away, then look no further! Please note: Anchor in The Storm is book 2 in the Waves of Freedom series. It is not necessary to read book 1, Through Waters Deep, first, but I would recommend you do just that. This is a great series — you won’t want to miss any part!

Book Review: Through Waters Deep

21 Aug

UnknownIt is 1941 and America teeters on the brink of war. Outgoing naval officer Ensign Jim Avery escorts British convoys across the North Atlantic in a brand-new destroyer, the USS Atwood. Back on shore, Boston Navy Yard secretary Mary Stirling does her work quietly and efficiently, happy to be out of the limelight. Yet, despite her reserved nature, she never could back down from a challenge. When evidence of sabotage on the Atwood is found, Jim and Mary must work together to uncover the culprit. A bewildering maze of suspects emerges, and Mary is dismayed to find that even someone close to her is under suspicion. With the increasing pressure, Jim and Mary find that many new challenges–and dangers–await them.

My Impressions:

Sarah Sundin’s WWII-era romances have become a favorite of mine. The first book of her newest series, Through Waters Deep, takes the reader into the turbulent days before the United States’ entrance into WWII. Mystery and history meet in this sweet romance featuring characters you’ll love. A recommended read for those who like historical romance.

Mary Stirling always tries to blend into the background. A traumatic experience in her childhood left her dodging the spotlight and embracing humility. Those traits allow her to do some sleuthing when sabotage is suspected at the Navy yard where she works. Mary’s sometimes goofy and gawky high school friend, Jim Avery, is now an Ensign in the Navy. His easy going style is attractive and Mary dreams of more than a friendship. Both are swept into the days before Pearl Harbor, a time of an unofficial and undeclared war in the Atlantic.

Mary loved Nancy Drew in her childhood and so did I! The mystery aspect of Through Waters Deep provides a great framework for the story of America’s reluctant entrance to WWII. Isolationist and interventionist proponents rally and protest as the government supports it allies in Europe. This is a part of history I didn’t learn in school — I am glad Sundin chose to include it. The main characters of Mary and Jim, as well as supporting characters, are likable and quickly make a place in the reader’s heart. They struggle with real issues — pride, humility, direction and purpose — that all can relate to. I did think the romance moved a bit slowly. I was ready to shake them if one of them did not make a move! But all in all, I really enjoyed Through Waters Deep and am looking forward to more in Sundin’s Waves of Freedom series.

Book Review: Where Treetops Glisten

15 Nov

426483The crunch of newly fallen snow, the weight of wartime.

Siblings forging new paths and finding love in three stories, filled with the wonder of Christmas.

Turn back the clock to a different time, listen to Bing Crosby sing of sleigh bells in the snow, as the realities of America’s involvement in the Second World War change the lives of the Turner family in Lafayette, Indiana.

In Cara Putman’s White Christmas, Abigail Turner is holding down the Home Front as a college student and a part-time employee at a one-of-a-kind candy shop. Loss of a beau to the war has Abigail skittish about romantic entanglements—until a hard-working young man with a serious problem needs her help.

Abigail’s brother Pete is a fighter pilot hero returned from the European Theater in Sarah Sundin’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas, trying to recapture the hope and peace his time at war has eroded. But when he encounters a precocious little girl in need of Pete’s friendship, can he convince her widowed mother that he’s no longer the bully she once knew?

In Tricia Goyer’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Meredith Turner, “Merry” to those who know her best, is using her skills as a combat nurse on the frontline in the Netherlands. Halfway around the world from home, Merry never expects to face her deepest betrayal head on, but that’s precisely what God has in mind to redeem her broken heart.

The Turner family believes in God’s providence during such a tumultuous time. Can they absorb the miracle of Christ’s birth and His plan for a future?

Glisten-251

Tricia Goyer is the bestselling author of more than 45 books, including fictional tales delighting and entertaining readers and non-fiction titles offering encouragement and hope. She is a two-time Carol Award winner, as well as a Christy and ECPA Award Nominee. A popular blogger, Goyer contributes to a number of homeschooling and Christian parenting sites. She and her husband, John, live in Little Rock, AR, and are the parents of six.

Cara Putman, the award-winning author of 19 books, including Shadowed by Grace, graduated high school at 16, graduated college at 20 and completed her law degree at 27. She is a lecturer on business and employment law to graduate students at Purdue University and also practices law. Putman is currently pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration at Krannert. She lives with her husband and four children in Indiana.

Sarah Sundin is the author of six historical novels, including In Perfect Time (Revell, August 2014). Her novel On Distant Shores was a double finalist for the 2014 Golden Scroll Awards. Sarah lives in northern California with her husband and three children, works on-call as a hospital pharmacist.

My Impressions:

Three authors, three Christmases, three heartwarming and nostalgic stories to add warmth to your holiday reading — that’s what you get in Where Treetops Glisten by Tricia Goyer, Cara Putman and Sarah Sundin. Various members of the Turner family of Lafayette, Indiana face the uncertainty of life in the face of war, both on the homefront and overseas. Through the voices of the three authors, a unique and cohesive story is created. Perfect reading for the cold nights leading up to Christmas.

The Turners of Lafayette, Indiana are a typical wartime family. The three adult children are making their way in life and trying to find the best way to serve their country. Fear, grief and broken hearts are tempered by faith, love and a hope for a future. Each novella in the collection is set during the Christmas season of the war years. The reader gets a glimpse of what it must have been like to live through rationing, Gold Star families and family members far away. All three novellas are good, but I especially connected with the characters in I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Sarah Sundin.

Faith in God to make things new, to overcome our fears with love, to restore and redeem are significant themes in Where Treetops Glisten. The faith message flows naturally in the narratives, but is never preachy. Characters are easy to love and connect with. And the authors did a great job in making the war years and the Greatest Generation come to life. I recommend Where Treetops Glisten — sweet, warm and cozy with spiritual truth, it is a book you’ll savor. Added bonus: the cookie recipes at the back!

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

Book Review: In Perfect Time

15 Aug

0720834Bold, sophisticated, and flirtatious, Army Air Force flight nurse Lt. Kay Jobson collects hearts wherever she flies, leaving men pining in airfields all across Europe. So how can ruggedly handsome C-47 pilot Lt. Roger Cooper be all but immune to her considerable charms? In fact, he seems to do everything he can to avoid her.
Still, as they cross the skies between Italy and southern France, evacuating the wounded and delivering paratroopers and supplies, every beat of their hearts draws them closer to where they don’t want to go.

Can they confront the fears and misunderstandings in their pasts?

SSundin-164Sarah Sundin is the author of With Every Letter and the Wings of Glory series. In 2011, A Memory Between Us was a finalist in the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Awards, and Sarah received the Writer of the Year Award at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference. A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on call as a hospital pharmacist. During WWII, her grandfather served as a pharmacist’s mate (medic) in the Navy and her great-uncle flew with the US Eighth Air Force in England. Sarah lives in California with her husband and three children.

My Impressions:

In Perfect Time is the third and final book in Sarah Sundin’s Wings of The Nightingale series. (You can read my reviews of books 1 and 2 by clicking on the following titles: With Every Letter and On Distant Shores.) Meticulously researched and filled with favorite characters from the first two books, In Perfect Time follows Lt. Kay Jobson as she discovers the truth about God’s love. If you like historical romance set during WWII, this novel is a great choice.

Flight nurse Kay Jobson presents a sassy and confident front that covers childhood hurts and a sense of never being good enough. Dating five guys at a time ensures that she keeps up the good-time facade but keeps serious attachment at bay. When faced with rejection by pilot Roger Cooper as well as denial of her dreams for a future, Kay is determined to change her reputation from party girl to good girl. Roger has dreams too, ones that won’t let him be tied down to a wife and family. In the past he was also told he wouldn’t amount to much. But God has other plans. Along the way, both Kay and Roger discover their own strengths and the truth behind God’s love, grace and mercy.

The final chapter in the Wings of The Nightingale series includes some great action — white knuckle flying, a plane crash and escape from Nazi patrols. Sundin has used real life events as her inspiration and the scenes in In Perfect Time reflect her painstaking research. Her characters express real life emotions, doubts and fears. But it is the faith message of God’s grace and mercy in stark contrast to what the world thinks and says that takes center stage. The main characters, Kay and Roger, have been told lies, directly and indirectly, about who they are in God’s eyes. Exposing the lies frees them to live the life God has planned. It also is a good reminder of the impact words and actions can have on people, especially children. Well-meaning motivation can hurt as much as abusive words if based on human knowledge rather than God’s wisdom.

If you are looking for a WWII romance that embodies the era of the Greatest Generation — courage, faith, patriotism and strength of character — then make sure to get In Perfect Time. Although part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. But I suggest you start with book 1 — a great series for historical romance fans.

Recommended.

Audience: Older teens and Adults.

Book Review: On Distant Shores

17 Aug

720820_w185Caught between the war raging around them and the battles within, two souls long for peace—and a love that remains true.

Lt. Georgiana Taylor has everything she could want. A boyfriend back home, a loving family, and a challenging job as a flight nurse. But in July 1943, Georgie’s cozy life gets more complicated when she meets pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson.

Hutch resents the lack of respect he gets as a noncommissioned serviceman and hates how the war keeps him from his fiancée. While Georgie and Hutch share a love of the starry night skies over Sicily, their lives back home are falling apart. Can they weather the hurt and betrayal? Or will the pressures of war destroy the fragile connection they’ve made?

With her signature attention to detail and her talent for bringing characters together, Sarah Sundin weaves an exciting tale of emotion, action, and romance that will leave you wanting more.

Sarah lives in California with her husband and three children. Visit http://www.sarahsundin.com for more information.

My Impressions:

For WWII romances, no one does it better than Sarah Sundin. Her novels capture the courage and determination of the era as well as portraying a depth of faith and love. Her latest novel, On Distant Shores, book 2 in the Wings of The Nightingale series, follows flight nurses and evacuation hospital staff as the US army invades Italy. Filled with complex and endearing characters and real life army experiences, this novel is one you don’t want to miss. And although it can certainly be read as a standalone, I would recommend putting book 1, With Every Letter, on your TBR list to ensure you get the most from your reading enjoyment.

Lt. Georgie Taylor is a flight nurse with a not so hidden fear — failure in the face of crisis. The other women in her group encourage and support her, but deep down she worries that, just as her family and fiance say, she is really not meant to be overseas in the midst of danger. Sgt. John “Hutch” Hutchinson believes he is right where he is supposed to be — a pharmacist without a commission making sure the patients in the evac hospital get the care they deserve. But he longs for the respect that comes with being an officer and is doing all in his power to get the coveted prize. Despite the fact that they are both engaged to people back home, the attraction between Georgie and Hutch is undeniable. But their differences in rank and their engagements make them just friends until the war changes things.

There is a lot to like about On Distant Shores. Sundin writes characters that have doubts and fears and also perseverance and strength. Georgie and Hutch learn to depend on God for their purpose instead of the safety of others or the respect of rank. I loved that their relationship grew along with their spiritual growth. The realties of nursing care and army hospitals, as well as the conditions found in worn torn Italy, are well researched. This book is a sure winner, and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance set amid the heroic times of WW II.

Book Review: With Every Letter

13 Sep

Lt. Mellie Blake is looking forward to beginning her training as a flight nurse. She is not looking forward to writing a letter to a man she’s never met–even if it is anonymous and part of a morale-building program. Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer stationed in North Africa, welcomes the idea of an anonymous correspondence–he’s been trying to escape his infamous name for years.

As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage by their pasts?

Combining a flair for romance with excellent research and attention to detail, Sarah Sundin vividly brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing–and true love.

Sarah Sundin is the author of the Wings of Glory series (A Distant Melody, A Memory Between Us, and Blue Skies Tomorrow). In 2011, A Memory Between Us was a finalist in the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Awards, and Sarah received the Writer of the Year Award at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference. Her latest release, With Every Letter, is the first in the new Wings of Nightingale series.

A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on-call as a hospital pharmacist. During WWII, her grandfather served as a pharmacist’s mate (medic) in the Navy and her great-uncle flew with the US Eighth Air Force in England. Sarah lives in California with her husband and three children.

My Impressions:

It has been a few months since I have read an historical novel; I have been really busy with contemporaries and suspense fiction. So I started With Every Letter with some anticipation — other books I have read by Sarah Sundin offered great reading. Well, she didn’t let me down! With Every Letter is a great book, and I eagerly look forward to others in the Wings of The Nightingale series.

Lt. Mellie Blake is ready for an adventure and a chance of a lifetime when she is chosen to become one of the first flight nurses during WWII. Only problem is, she doesn’t know how to make friends; and that seems to be a requirement for the job. Lt. Tom MacGilliver is the life of the party, but can’t reveal his real side to himself or others. Both characters are trapped by their upbringing and the impressions of others. When they are matched in an anonymous letter writing program, both can open up without fear of rejection. But when their platonic-only friendship develops into much more, they have to risk it all in order to have a lasting relationship.

The Greatest Generation comes to life as the characters risk their lives for their country in Northern Africa and Sicily. The dedication and determination that characterized the men and women of WWII are faithfully captured by Sarah Sundin’s pen. Her characters seem very real — the innocence, optimism, grit and sense of honor and duty come across loud and clear. And the struggles they face with identity and fitting in are real across the generations. I also enjoyed the setting of the story. I knew little about the North African theater, and Sundin created some very vivid scenes. If you like a good romance, you will also love With Every Letter.

Highly Recommended.

Book Review: Blue Skies Tomorrow

24 Aug

Lt. Raymond Novak prefers the pulpit to the cockpit, but at least his stateside job training B-17 pilots allows him the luxury of a personal life. As he courts Helen Carlisle, a young war widow and mother who conceals her pain under a frenzy of volunteer work, the sparks of their romance set a fire that flings them both into peril. After Ray leaves to fly a combat mission at the peak of the air war over Europe, Helen takes a job in a dangerous munitions yard and confronts an even graver menace in her own home. Will they find the courage to face their challenges? And can their young love survive until blue skies return?

About Sarah Sundin (from the author’s website)

Although I come from a home wallpapered in books, I only briefly envisioned myself as a writer, when my sister and I co-wrote Funny Dancing Fruits and Vegetables complete with crayon illustrations.

Then I discovered science. I loved learning about the intricacies of God’s creation, so I studied chemistry in college, and then got my doctorate in pharmacy—not a typical career path for a writer.

In pharmacy school, I met my husband, Dave. We settled in northern California and were blessed by three bright, funny children—Stephen, Anna, and Matthew.

Then on January 6, 2000, I woke from a dream so intriguing I had to write it down. I proceeded to write a really bad 750-page contemporary Christian romance. Burn-it-when-I-die bad. But the Lord used it to call me into writing. I joined a critique group, attended writers’ conferences, and joined American Christian Fiction Writers. These all taught me about the craft of writing and the publishing industry, and introduced me to writers, editors, and agents.

I first submitted the manuscript for A Distant Melody in 2003, and over the next five years I accumulated a pile of “good” rejection letters from editors and agents. Finally in 2008, a submission at Mount Hermon Christian Writers’ Conference led to the sale of the Wings of Glory series — A Distant Melody (2010), A Memory Between Us (2010), and Blue Skies Tomorrow (August 2011). In 2011, I received the Writer of the Year Award at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference, and A Memory Between Us was a finalist in the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Awards.

Between writing and driving kids to soccer and karate, I work one evening a week as a hospital pharmacist, teach Sunday school to fourth- and fifth-graders, and teach women’s Bible studies. I enjoy speaking to school, community, women’s, historical, and church groups. Visit my speaking page to see a list of topics.

The Lord has called you for a purpose. If He gave you a dream, persevere and never give up. If He gave you the dream to write fiction, then write! Read as much as you can. Join a critique group, attend conferences, and join American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW). Keep reading, keep writing, keep submitting, and learn from all you do. The Lord’s plan may or may not include publication, but His plans are always good!

Q&A for the Wings of Glory series.

My Impressions:

Blue Skies Tomorrow is the last installment of Sarah Sundin’s Wings of Glory series.  What a shame!  This is such a great series, that I am sorry to leave the wonderful characters that she has created.  But don’t worry, Sarah has another series in the works (more on that later).  Beginning with A Distant Melody and continuing through A Memory Between Us, this series follows the three Novak brothers and their exploits during WWII.  All are pilots with the the Army Air Force and face dangerous missions with great faith and courage. They also meet women that tug at their hearts.  The series brings to life the days of WWII — the hopes, dreams, and fears of the Greatest Generation.

In Blue Skies Tomorrow, Ray Novak is a pastor at heart who finds himself kicked out of his flight instructor position to a desk in a supply facility.  His doubts about his character emerge and are tested in the new role he finds himself in — a desk bound pilot in a safe assignment while others, including his brothers, are facing the ultimate sacrifice for their country.  Could it be true what others whisper; is he a coward?  Helen Carlisle keeps the home fires burning with her work with the Red Cross, Junior Red Cross and various drives and morale boosting shows with which she keeps busy.  Her role is set for her — grieving widow dutifully keeping her husband alive not only for her son, but the town as well — but it is a mask she wears to appease the town and her guilt.  When Ray and Helen bump into each other, they instantly feel a spark of attraction, but also the fears and hurts they have kept hidden so well threaten to come to the surface as well.  In just one night, their course seems set — Ray heads off to a combat assignment in England and Helen returns to the home of her late husband.  But for both of them a nightmare life takes over.  Will they ever find the light of day and each other?

Blue Skies Tomorrow kept me turning the pages.  Both Ray and Helen are thrust into threatening situations from which there seems no escape.  Yet they find the courage and the faith to take the steps necessary not only to persevere, but to come through victoriously.  Ugly things are exposed by Sundin — prejudice and injustice within the Navy, emotional and physical abuse — but she proves that things that flourish in the dark, cannot stand when exposed to the light of day and the light of God’s truth.  It is a wonderful thing when an author creates characters that come to life within the reader.   I felt Helen’s despair, and I lived Ray’s desperation.  Billed as “historical romance”, Blue Skies Tomorrow is so much more —  a wonderful story of two people who find the courage to face their fears and to reach towards what God wants for them.

Highly Recommended.

Sarah is at work on a new series —

WINGS OF THE NIGHTINGALE Series (coming in 2012 from Revell)

In this series, three World War II flight nurses discover friendship, love, and peril in the skies and on the shores of the Mediterranean.

In Every Letter (working title), September 2012 — Loner Mellie Blake longs for adventure as a flight nurse, while Army engineer Lt. Tom MacGilliver tries to overcome the legacy of his infamous father. In North Africa and Sicily, Mellie pioneers air evacuation while Tom builds airfields under fire. Will their anonymous correspondence unlock their true identities?

To Every Shore (working title), June 2013 — Lt. Georgie Taylor loves her job as a flight nurse, but the goals of pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson are frustrated at every turn. As Georgie and Hutch care for American soldiers in Sicily and Italy, tragedy brings them together. But will their differences keep them apart?

With Every Beat (working title), June 2014 — Flight nurse Lt. Kay Jobson collects hearts wherever she flies, but C-47 pilot Lt. Roger Cooper is immune to her charms. Throughout Italy and southern France, as she evacuates the wounded and he delivers paratroopers and supplies, every beat of their hearts draws them where they don’t want to go.

Blue Skies Tomorrow Giveaway

23 Aug
