First Line Friday — A Season on The Wind

15 Oct

Happy Friday! I am featuring one of my favorite authors this week — Suzanne Woods Fisher. I don’t read a lot of Amish fiction, but I do read every book that Fisher publishes, including, and especially, her Amish novels. There is just something about the communities she portrays that draw me in. Real and relatable are two adjectives I can always ascribe to her characters. A Season on The Wind is her latest novel, and I will be reading it soon.

Here’s the first line:

Penny Weaver stayed so still that the field sparrow in her yard didn’t seem to know she was there.

Ben Zook had only two loves in his life: books and birds. In a stroke of good fortune, he’d stumbled onto a way to cobble together those two loves into a career, writing books about rare birds. He was as free as a bird–until a chase for a rare White-winged Tern takes him to the one place on earth he planned to never return: his Amish home in Stoney Ridge.

Desperate for photographs of the elusive tern, Ben hires a local field guide, Micah Weaver, and boards at Micah’s farm, planning to “bag the bird” and leave Stoney Ridge before anyone recognizes him. But he neglected to plan for Micah’s sister, Penny.

One long-ago summer, Penny had introduced Ben to birding, even sharing with him a hidden eagle aerie. That was when she knew true love. She’d always hoped he would come back to Stoney Ridge. Back to his Amish roots. Back to her. The only problem? Ben has absolutely no memory of Penny.

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher welcomes her readers to the Amish community at Stoney Ridge in this engaging story of discovering just who the rare birds are in life.

Suzanne Woods Fisher loves stories worth telling about people worth remembering. With over a million copies of her book sold worldwide, this bestselling, award-winning author of more than 30 books is always on the lookout for the unsung hero with an untold story.

Readers are invited to stop by Suzanne’s website at: http://www.suzannewoodsfisher.com.

Top 10 Tuesday — I Will Read Anywhere!

17 Aug

Today’s Top 10 Tuesday topic is favorite places to read. Since I will read anywhere, I thought it would be a fun twist to match books to the Dr. Seuss-style poem about reading (many thanks to Seuss’ Green Eggs And Ham for the poet’s inspiration). While I had to stretch some of the connections, I think you will forgive me as the books I am sharing are awesome!

EXCERPT

Where was a fairy godmother when she needed one?

Or a lamp with a genie ready to pop out and grant her three wishes?

Lauren knew what the very first one would have been. She wanted to be anywhere but where she was now. Stuck in a storm with Adam Hershberger instead of being at her comfy hotel in Lancaster, reviewing the materials for her presentation tomorrow morning.

She couldn’t say such things to the man staring at her as if she were some bug. She doubted he’d understand. He’d get the urgency of preparing for her meeting, but not the fairy-tale references.

When her parents had jumped the fence and Lauren had entered a public high school, she’d had to take a crash course in the common cultural references everyone else took for granted. She’d read every fairy tale and watched endless Disney movies in an effort to figure out what her new classmates were talking about. Of course, she’d never believed those charming tales were true, but right now she sure wished one or two of them were. She could have used a magic carpet to fly her to Lancaster.

Explaining what had happened to her boss Patrick Giacchino—Don’t call me Pat!—was something she didn’t look forward to doing either. No one was ever supposed to bring him bad news. She guessed her rival Cassie filled his ears with everything he wanted to hear, so Lauren would have to choose her words carefully.

Her boss wasn’t her problem now. Adam Hershberger was. She didn’t lower her eyes as he continued to stare with his cool, brown eyes. He’d tried to intimidate her before, and she wouldn’t let him do that again. Not with his steady gaze and not with his unexpected good looks. The last time she’d been in his company, he’d been a pimply-faced kid. His face hadn’t been as sculpted. He’d seldom smiled. The few times he had was when he was about to do something to annoy her or Naomi. Or when he was exulting with his friends about what nasty thing one of them had done to aggravate her and Naomi.

She couldn’t help wondering whom Adam had convinced to marry him. Though he didn’t wear a wedding ring—no plain man did—his beard, which followed the strong line of his jaw, was an announcement to the world he’d spoken his vows with his chosen bride. Whom had he married?

EXCERPT

Aaron stared down the barrel of a gun. The sight of it had him sitting back on his heels. All he could think about was Caleb’s safety. Her hand didn’t seem at all steady. One false move and he’d be dead. His shotgun was out of reach. If she intended to use the weapon, he’d never reach it in time.

“I mean you no harm.” He sought to assure her while keeping his hands where she could see them. She didn’t blink. Didn’t lower the weapon. He thought about the lights he’d seen earlier. What had she done to make these men come after her?

Author: Jan Drexler
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: October 20, 2020

Despite the severity of his injuries, Aaron has resolved to move west and leave the pain of the past behind him. He never imagined that the Amish way of life his grandfather had rejected long ago would be so enticing. That, and a certain widow he can’t get out of his mind.

Yet, even in a simple community, life has a way of getting complicated. Aaron soon finds that while he may have left the battlefield behind, there is another fight he must win–the one for the heart of the woman he loves.

EXCERPT

“Isn’t it about time your Elizabeth married again?” Salome’s voice took on the wheedling tone that set Elizabeth’s teeth on edge. “She’s been a widow far too long.”

“I’m not concerned,” Mamm said. “The Good Lord knows what Elizabeth needs, and he will provide.”

“Now that she has repented of her unfortunate marriage to that outsider and has joined the church, my Levi might consider marrying her.” Salome sniffed. “The Good Book instructs widows to marry, and your daughter has many good childbearing years ahead of her.”

“Abraham and I will let Elizabeth make her own decisions concerning her future.” Mamm’s voice had an edge to it that told Elizabeth she was trying to hold her temper.

Salome grunted. “You should have reined that girl in years ago, before she ran off and married that reprobate. If she was my daughter—”

“She isn’t your daughter, Salome,” Mamm broke in.
