Top 10 Tuesday — Weather!

17 Oct

Happy Tuesday! My husband and I have a beef with weather TV — it all has to be so dramatic! Over the weekend one cable weather channel titled the falling temps across our area as October Gloom. LOL. The forecast for today is sunny and a high of 69 degrees. If that’s gloom, I’ll take it. 🙂 Today’s TTT topic could take a dramatic turn as well, and some of the titles I’m sharing do sound ominous. But I wanted to have books that run the spectrum of weather events, so there are a few pleasant weather days too. I hope you find a book to love.

Thomas Smucker moved to West Kootenai for a fresh start—one where he could make his own decisions and build a life away from his deceased father’s harsh reputation. But when a tragedy occurs, he finds his five-year-old niece in his care. Now, he has to build a life he didn’t want and face a past that he longed to escape.

Lovina Graber dreams of a husband and family of her own, but a lifelong limp and disfigured face have her doubting it will ever happen. Instead, she’s content working as a scribe for The Budget and spending her days helping her parents and the less fortunate in her community. Well, mostly content. And then there’s that secret anonymous column she’s been writing too …

When a newly arrived bachelor becomes an instant father, Lovina feels compelled to come to the rescue, helping Thomas care for his Englisch niece as he works toward gaining custody. Although Thomas and his niece clash at every turn, Lovina finds herself building a bond with the girl. Could this be the family she’s longed for?

Afraid he’s too much like his anger-driven father, Thomas has no plans to ever marry or have children, despite the sparks between him and Lovina, and his growing fondness for his niece. When he finds out Lovina’s secret—and believes she’s perhaps not the person he thought—he strikes out in caring for Emily on his own.

But when his custody is threatened, he must do what’s best for his niece. The only problem is he’s not sure what that is. Can he and Lovina work together to fight the lies they’ve believed all their lives—and fight the system to get back their girl?

Find out in this third installment of the Big Sky Amish Collection.

Chapter 1

Monday, July 24

A steady torrent of rain wet Lovina Graber’s eyelashes and fell like tears as she hobbled to the waiting SUV caked with mud and grime. While she loved the smell of rain in Montana, she wished it would have lightened up until she was safely in the car. With her uneven gait she struggled on the slick ground. Slowly. Just a few more steps.

One foot slid, and Lovina released the tote bag she’d been holding as she reached for the side of the car to catch herself.

Ach, no!” The contents of her bag spilled all over the wet pavement. As gingerly as possible, she bent over to scoop up the assorted books, craft supplies, and papers, including a large manilla envelope, that had tumbled out.

Her Englisch driver, Wyatt, an older fellow who looked every bit the stereotypical Montana mountain man, hurriedly approached as she stuffed her bag with damp skeins of yarn and rain-slicked magazines. “Let me help you with that, Miss Graber,” he offered, his deep, gruff voice and scraggly gray beard concealing his kind nature.

She clutched the envelope to her chest, then peeked inside her bag to inventory the contents and forced a wide smile in appreciation of his offer of help. “Danke anyway, Wyatt. I think I’ve got everything now.”

Wyatt mopped his brow on the arm of his tattered flannel shirt before opening the beat-up SUV’s back passenger door and offering a hand. She accepted and awkwardly situated herself in the seat. While buckling herself in, she noticed an Amish man she didn’t recognize sitting in the front passenger seat. Immediately her cheeks heated as she realized he’d just witnessed her near fall, but she quickly pushed the thoughts away. Not that it matters none anyway.

The Amish man looked older than most of the new bachelors coming to the area, and the sharp cut of his jaw made him appear handsome. Her heartbeat quickened.

Lovina pulled in a breath and released it just as quickly, reminding herself of the truth she knew. No matter how many bachelors came into West Kootenai, it was useless to get her hopes up. Even if she caught a bachelor glancing her way, one rarely gave her a second look. Although it had pained her for years, Lovina had worked hard to move past it. She could live a happy life without becoming a wife and mother . . . couldn’t she?

Top Ten Tuesday — Throwing It Way Back(list)

1 Aug

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is Backlist Love. So what’s a backlist? Older books still in print are considered part of an author’s backlist. I thought about going way back and listing the author’s debut novels (and some of those on the list are), but some authors wrote for the general market back in the day or the books are no longer available (unless you want to pay an Amazon seller several hundred dollars 😉 ). I’ve listed books that I still need to read from the backlists of favorite authors. In some cases, it’s the only book I haven’t read by an author! There are lots of genres to pick from — hope you find one to love too!

For more amazing backlist suggestions, check out That Artsy Reader Girl.

She’s an accidental witness.

Now she’s running for her life…

Witnessing a murder puts a target on Molly Schultz’s back, and now she’s on the run from a gunman dead set on silencing her. She turns to family friend Zeke Bender for help, but when Molly’s identity and location are exposed, they’re left with a criminal among her Amish community. Can Zeke safeguard Molly long enough to catch the culprit—or will they fall prey to their merciless hunter?

Excerpt

There was a thud in the back of the haus, followed by loud footsteps tromping to the closed doorway of the den. Whoever had fired that shot might be heading her way.

Now!

Finally pulling the door open, Molly threw herself out of the haus and raced down the doorway, ignoring the pain in her weak leg. The door had barely clicked shut when it burst open again.

“You!” the angry voice thundered behind her. It was the man who’d been shouting at Terry. Had he shot Terry or Nancy? How close was he? She didn’t take the time to look over her shoulder. A gun barked and a bullet thunked into a tree a foot away from her. She’d been right to leave. She had to find someone who could help.

Excerpt

He, Reuben Milner, was an author. He held the evidence in his hands.

A breeze pushed up from the lake below, and the sun rose a little higher in the sky, its rays warming his face. Smoothing the pages of the book—his book—Reuben clutched it a little tighter so it wouldn’t end up in the lake below.

It was abnormally warm for April in West Kootenai. Last week they’d had a snowstorm, evidence still sparkling on the ground, and this week they were pushing the upper fifties. Another breeze blew, sending Reuben clutching for the straw hat on his head. At least the wind coming off the Canadian Rockies was still cold, still predictable.

Cold wind, rain, a snowstorm couldn’t keep him away from his cliff. It was where Reuben came when he needed to think or process or just be out of the house and away from his five sisters. Today he was here to celebrate. His gaze fell back to the object in his hands.

Hidden Hero, the title read. A real book that he’d written. His finger brushed the woman on the cover, who wore a long skirt similar to the ones his mem and sisters wore. Only this woman’s hair was free, blowing in the wind as she looked into the distance. A biblical story set in an old Western town. He still couldn’t believe this was what had captured the attention of a New York publishing house.

EXCERPT

Saturday, June 24, Kalispell, Montana

“How hard can it be to plan one wedding?” Marianna Sommer mumbled to herself as she strode down Main Street in Kalispell toward the dress shop—the Englisch dress shop. The warm spring breeze blew softly, ruffling strands of light-brown hair that, for most of her life, had been neatly secured under her kapp.

But no longer.

On one side of Marianna paced her friend Annie Johnson, wearing her typical jeans, flannel shirt, and cowboy boots. In her mid-forties, Annie was the owner of the Kootenai Kraft and Grocery. Along with providing a location where one could buy anything from bulk flour and garden seeds to fencing and fishing supplies, Annie was also known to provide a listening ear and a boost of moral support. And this was why she’d offered to take Marianna and her mother dress shopping today.

Marianna had never attended an Englisch wedding, much less planned one. Yet now that she was marrying Ben Stone—the handsome musician with his dark hair, bright blue eyes, and easy smile—many changes would be taking place.

Starting with choosing a wedding dress.

Mem padded on the other side of Marianna in a typical Amish dress, apron, and kapp. She walked with her head lowered and shoulders slumped. She crossed her arms over her chest and uncrossed them as if she didn’t know what to do with herself. It was partly because Mem didn’t have baby Joy on her hip. Yet Marianna also knew this wasn’t how Mem had planned her life. First, losing her oldest two daughters years ago in a buggy accident, and now, having Marianna marry an Englischer. Every Amish mother dreamed of her daughters growing up and following in her footsteps. For Mem, this wouldn’t be so.

Lord, help me to get through this with peace…marrying the man I love yet also honoring my family and Amish friends. Was that even possible?

Flower Shop

Just Let Go by Courtney Walsh

For Quinn Collins, buying the flower shop in downtown Harbor Pointe fulfills a childhood dream, but also gives her the chance to stick it to her mom, who owned the store before skipping town twenty years ago and never looking back. Completing much-needed renovations, however, while also competing for a prestigious flower competition with her mother as the head judge, soon has Quinn in over her head. Not that she’d ever ask for help.

Luckily, she may not need to. Quinn’s father and his meddling friends find the perfect solution in notorious Olympic skier Grady Benson, who had only planned on passing through the old-fashioned lakeside town. But when a heated confrontation leads to property damage, helping Quinn as a community-service sentence seems like the quickest way out—and the best way to avoid more negative press.

Quinn finds Grady reckless and entitled; he thinks she’s uptight and too regimented. Yet as the two begin to hammer and saw, Quinn sees glimpses of the vulnerability behind the bravado, and Grady learns from her passion and determination, qualities he seems to have lost along the way. But when a well-intentioned omission has devastating consequences, Grady finds himself cast out of town—and Quinn’s life—possibly forever. Forced to face the hurt holding her back, Quinn must finally let go or risk missing out on the adventure of a lifetime.

Grocery Store

The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery by Amanda Cox

Present Day. After tragedy plunges her into grief and unresolved anger, Sarah Ashby returns to her childhood home determined to finally follow her long-denied dream of running Old Depot Grocery alongside her mother and grandmother. But when she arrives, her mother, Rosemary, announces to her that the store is closing. Sarah and her grandmother, Glory Ann, make a pact to save the store, but Rosemary has worked her entire life to make sure her daughter never follows in her footsteps. She has her reasons–but she’ll certainly never reveal the real one.

1965. Glory Ann confesses to her family that she’s pregnant with her deceased fiancé’s baby. Pressured into a marriage of convenience with a shopkeeper to preserve the family reputation, Glory Ann vows never to love again. But some promises are not as easily kept as she imagined.

This dual-timeline story from Amanda Cox deftly explores the complexity of a mother-daughter dynamic, the way the secrets we keep shape our lives and the lives of others, and the healing power of telling the truth.

Now I just need to read them!
