Top 10 Tuesday — Occupations

2 Sep

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is a fun one — occupations in the title of books. There are a lot of directions you can go on this. I considered going a bad guy route — pirate, thief, etc. in the title — but decided to be straightforward with real honest-to-goodness, if a bit old fashioned, occupations. 😉 I included occupations that any one can reasonably achieve — no kings or queens. It was a bit challenging coming up with 10; I went pretty far back in the archives to find them. While the genres vary, most are historical fiction. I hope you find a book to love!

Top 10 Tuesday — Quick Reads!

6 Feb

When time is short, but you still want to read, I think the best choice is a novella. I don’t read a lot of novellas; I really prefer a full length novel. But I do appreciate a quick read during those busy times of life. Novellas and novella collections have been my go-to for a quick reading getaway from all the hustle and bustle of life. A novella is also good when you want to try out a new author. My list includes novellas in a variety of genres, so no matter what you are in the mood for, there’s a book for you.

Top 10 Tuesday — Hospitals!

5 Dec

Today is a TTT Freebie, s0 I thought I would tackle the depressing setting of hospitals. LOL! My husband laughed and rolled his eyes at me when I announced the topic. Surely I could have found a cheerier setting for the first TTT of December 2023? Probably, but I am in a rebellious mood. 😉 The books I am featuring all revolve around a hospital of some sort and encompass various time periods and genres. They are great for whatever ails you. Ugh!

Happy Book Release — Medical Mystery

18 Jan

Join me in wishing Richard L. Mabry, MD a very happy book release day! His latest medical suspense novella, Medical Mystery is now available in paperback and on Kindle. Click HERE for a purchase link. All the details about the book are below.

When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem.

The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane’s idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar.

The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe.

Dr. Richard Mabry is a retired physician, now writing “medical mysteries with heart.” In addition to his medical books, he is the author of one non-fiction book, several novellas, and thirteen published novels. His novels have been finalists for the Carol Award, the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award, the Reviewer’s Choice Award, the Selah Award, and others.
He and his wife live in north Texas. In addition to regular efforts (thus far unsuccessful) to improve his golf game, he spends much of his time trying to convince his family that sitting at his desk staring into space does indeed represent work.

It began with an innocent-appearing package on her front porch.

The box contained a cell phone, which rang as soon as she opened the package. A voice that called Dr. Kathy Hoover by name said that her husband had been kidnapped. To get him back she would have to poison one of her patients.

At first, she didn’t believe that her husband had been taken from the conference he was attending, but soon she discovered that the kidnappers really had Darren. If she wanted to see him again, she had to give medication that would murder Kelton Rush, former Vice-President. What was she to do? How would she handle this critical decision?

Book Review: Emergency Case

2 Jan

Dr. Kelly Irving knew her husband, attorney Jack Harbaugh, was acting strangely, but figured they’d get through it. When she backed out of her garage that morning, she thought her car hit a bump. Instead, its progress was stopped by the body of a man her husband recently represented. Not only that, the dead man had been shot by her husband’s gun. The police who investigated made it clear that Jack was a primary suspect.

Kelly couldn’t decide if Jack was a murderer or marked as the next victim. As things continued to escalate, they were forced to put their marital differences aside and concentrate on keeping Jack alive while discovering who was behind the whole thing.

My Impressions:

Emergency Case is the newest novella by Dr. Richard Mabry. Mabry is known for his faith-filled, suspenseful books, and this one is no exception. But this time we get a husband and wife team with legal and medical perspectives trying to outwit the bad guys. I really liked the married couple, Kelly and Jack Harbaugh. Theirs is not a perfect marriage — their respective careers demand a lot from them. But they were committed to each other and making their relationship work, though things get a bit sidetracked as Jack is a suspect in the murder of his client and unknown assailants continue to attack. Emergency Case is a short and fast-paced read; you could finish this one in one sitting, but it doesn’t scrimp on the essentials — determined characters, a puzzling mystery, and thoughtful questions of faith and ethics. It’s a winner! And a recommended read from me.

Recommended.

Audience: adults.
