Top 10 Tuesday — Suspense That Kept Me Guessing

16 Jul

Happy Tuesday! I am little late posting today, but as they say, better than never! I twisted today’s topic to give you 10 books that are examples of what keeps me reading suspense novels — they kept me guessing! I loved that. I read A LOT of suspense and I often figure out whodunit before the main characters. So if an author can surprise me, I count that as a big reading win. If you like suspense too, then check out my list. Please note, I reviewed all of these books here on the blog and I did not have to give a positive review. But they were so good, that I did! 😉

If You Liked . . . Double Take

27 Jun

Double Take by Lynette Eason sure was a twisting romantic suspense! It was a page turner, as well as a puzzler. If you liked this novel and want more like it, here are a few reading recommendations.

Proof by Jordyn Redwood

Dr. Lilly Reeves is a young, accomplished ER physician with her whole life ahead of her. But that life instantly changes when she becomes the fifth victim of a serial rapist. Believing it’s the only way to recover her reputation and secure peace for herself, Lilly sets out to find–and punish–her assailant. Sporting a mysterious tattoo and unusually colored eyes, the rapist should be easy to identify. He even leaves what police would consider solid evidence. But when Lilly believes she has found him, DNA testing clears him as a suspect. How can she prove he is guilty, if science says he is not?

Distraught by the turn of events, Lilly suffers a setback and is fired from her job shortly after discovering she is pregnant as a result of her attack. Blinded by her desire for revenge, Lilly vows she will seize her life back and bring her rapist to justice–and the first step is figuring out how her nefarious assailant could cheat the usually conclusive DNA test. Her search must unravel the mystery of his genetic fingerprint even if it forces Lilly to deal with her own past and shaky faith. But the rapist is watching Lilly’s every move. Can she discover the truth before he ends her life–and the life of her unborn child?

The Sound of Falling Leaves by Lisa Carter

After aspiring opera singer Tessa loses her voice in a fire, she needs both a place to heal and a way to keep music in her life. She retreats to her aunt’s apple orchard in rural North Carolina to collect folk ballads. But amid the autumn splendor of this isolated Appalachian community, she uncovers an unnerving connection between a murder case and a long-ago disappearance. Tessa gets a glimpse into an almost-forgotten world, encounters a corrupt, small-town political dynasty, and finds superstition and prejudice at every turn.

She’s also drawn to Zeke, the handsome but enigmatic orchard caretaker, who shows her that mountain justice is neither impartial nor just. But battling a conspiracy of silence, Tessa isn’t sure if she can trust him. Yet somewhere in the mists of the Blue Ridge Mountains, evil lurks, and a killer is determined to keep the past where it belongs–dead and buried.

Woman in Shadow by Carrie Stuart Parks

A woman off the grid.

Darby Graham thinks she’s on a much-needed vacation in remote Idaho to relax. But before she even arrives at the ranch, an earthquake strikes. Then a barn on the edge of town is engulfed in flames and strange problems at the ranch begin to escalate, and Darby finds herself immersed in a chilling mystery.

A town on fire.

More fires erupt around town, and a serial arsonist sends taunting letters to the press after each. As a forensic linguist, this is Darby’s area of expertise . . . but the scars her work has caused her are also the reason she’s trying to escape her life.

A growing darkness.

As the shadows continue moving in, pieces of the town around her come into sharper focus. To make it out alive, Darby must decide if she can trust the one man who sees her clearly.

Top 10 Tuesday — Quick Reads!

6 Feb

When time is short, but you still want to read, I think the best choice is a novella. I don’t read a lot of novellas; I really prefer a full length novel. But I do appreciate a quick read during those busy times of life. Novellas and novella collections have been my go-to for a quick reading getaway from all the hustle and bustle of life. A novella is also good when you want to try out a new author. My list includes novellas in a variety of genres, so no matter what you are in the mood for, there’s a book for you.

Top 10 Tuesday — Great Books That Went Unread in 2023

23 Jan

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is fortunately or unfortunately (depending how you look at these things) an easy post for me. In my reading life, my eyes are bigger than the time I have available to read. 🙁 This leads to a lot of poor, deserving books left alone on the shelf. And I have to confess, I have more than 10. 🙁

Let me know if you read any of the books on my list so that I can move them closer to the top of my towering TBR pile.

First Line Friday — Double Take

19 Jan

Happy Friday! I am a big fan of Lynette Eason. Her romantic suspense is always so good, but I have to say that Double Take, her latest release, has moved up to the top of my favorites. Lynette is currently on a book tour, and I am taking road trip to meet her and to get a signed copy of this book. Make sure you check to see if she will be in your area in the coming weeks — Book Tour.

Here’s the first line:

The click next to her ear jerked her out of a deep sleep to roll into a sitting position, a scream on her lips, her eyes on the man with the gun standing next to her.

Detective James Cross has been honorably discharged from the Army Criminal Investigation Division due to wounds sustained when an IED blew up near him. Now with the Lake City Police Department, he’s rooming with this good buddy and partner, Cole, while he figures out his family dynamics.

Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson is eighteen months out from an attempted murder perpetrated by her ex, which ended when she managed to grab the weapon and shoot him. Book Review — Double Take

9 Jan

I have always loved Lynette Eason‘s romantic suspense, but I have to say that Double Take is now my favorite of her novels. It was a twisty, keep-you-guessing, unputdownable read! Highly recommended!

My Impressions:

Double Take, the newest novel by Lynette Eason, is going to be a big hit with fans of the romantic suspense genre. First of all the premise of the book is unique — how can a dead man possibly come back to life? Main character Lainie is sure there’s a trick because she killed him! But her deceased fiancé is everywhere. I spent a lot of my reading time trying to figure out the BIG mystery, as do Lainie and the other main character, James. Their chemistry is instantaneous, but it never gets in the way of the investigation. I really like that about this novel. Give me naturally developing romance every time. As I said, the mystery is huge — there are lots of twists, turns, and unbelievable clues. And the fast pace of the book kept me turning the pages, while staying up later and later to find out finally whodunit. You’ll be swept up in the surprises awaiting you! Eason also delivers a thoughtful book with deep spiritual truths seamlessly woven through the narrative. There is nothing preachy in Double Take, and I appreciated the family dynamics explored by both characters. Forgiveness and letting go of things we can’t control are important themes.

Start your new year reading off right with Double Take. Highly recommended.

Highly Recommended.
