If You Liked . . . Better Watch Out

30 Dec

I loved this month’s book club pick, Better Watch Out by Natalie Walters! It had all the things I could want in a Christmas-y romantic suspense — action and danger, sizzling romance, and all things Christmas. The NYC setting brought back great memories of a trip my husband and I took one December. Plus it added to my bucket list (IYKYK).

If you are a fan of Christmas cheer, mystery/suspense, and/or sweet romance, here’s some more reading recommendations:

Last to Know by Brandy Heineman

All she wants for Christmas . . . is an end to this terrible year.

Silver bells are ringing, but family drama and flaky finances have Nadine Notaro wrung out. The only bright spots this holiday season are her job at the Blissford Historical Society and her cheery, dependable co-worker, Chase Garren—until the City Council cuts their funding. The lost income will be bad enough, but what about Chase? Though quick to remind everyone they’re just friends, she can’t stomach losing him, too.

While packing up the Society’s record collections, Chase and Nadine discover a journalist’s cache of negatives pointing to a decades-old scandal and cover-up. Entanglements with the City’s biggest power players pull their strings, but every clue brings them closer to the truth—and each other—until Nadine finds evidence of a betrayal she never thought possible.

Casting light on the lies may ruin Christmas and their friendship, but it stands to cost them much more.

The Mistletoe Countess by Pepper Basham

Will the magic of Christmas bring these two newlyweds closer together, or will the ghosts of the past lead them into a destructive discovery from which not even a Dickens’s Christmas can save them?

Mistletoe is beautiful and dangerous, much like the woman from Lord Frederick’s Percy’s past, so when he turns over a new leaf and arranges to marry for his estate, instead of his heart, he never expects the wrong bride to be the right choice. Gracelynn Ferguson never expected to take her elder sister’s place as a Christmas bride, but when she’s thrust into the choice, she will trust in her faithful novels and overactive imagination to help her not only win Frederick’s heart but also to solve the murder mystery of Havensbrook Hall before the ghosts from Frederick’s past ruin her fairytale future.

Whiskers, Wreaths, And Murder by Kathy Manos Penn

If it were up to her, they’d be singing carols and baking cookies. Instead, they’re stockings-deep in a murder investigation…

Leta Parker is looking forward to her first holiday season in the Cotswolds. Prepping for the town’s tree-lighting ceremony, the village is enraged when the new American earl announces plans to develop his family’s estate into a resort. And when the brash successor is found dead in a ditch, it’s obvious this car crash was no accident.

Determined to unwrap the truth behind the tragedy, Leta enlists the help of the Little Old Ladies Detective Agency and her talking dog and cat. But with everyone in the charming hamlet a suspect, it’ll be tough to discover who’s not on Father Christmas’s naughty list.

Will Leta and friends deliver the gift of justice?

Whiskers, Wreaths & Murder is the third book in the delightful Dickens & Christie cozy mystery series. If you like clever senior women, deep friendships, and animals of the talking variety, then you’ll love Kathy Manos Penn’s yuletide whodunit

Mini-Book Review: Last to Know

12 Dec

Brandy Heineman‘s Christmas-y novella, Last to Know, is a romantic suspense that kept me engaged and guessing. Main characters Nadine and Chase have developed a close friend relationship while working at their small town historical museum. Both are dedicated to preserving their community’s historical artifacts, but a number of forces come together to force the museum’s closure. It all seems like business/politics as usual, until Nadine and Chase discover what seems to be a cover-up of a decades-old murder. While uncovering clues and avoiding danger, the MCs go from friends to more. I liked the small town-vibe, the sweet romance, and the suspense that kept the characters and me on my toes. I did not see the ending coming! There are themes of abandonment and feelings of unworthiness, and the author presents a strong message of finding value in our relationship with God.

If you are looking for a quick and Christmas-y read, then Last to Know is a great choice.

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

(I purchased this book from Amazon. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

First Line Friday — Last to Know

8 Dec

Happy Friday! I am deep into my Christmas reading list and am loving it! This week I am featuring Last to Know, a romantic suspense by Brandy Heineman. There’s a lot to love about this novella — my review posts next week. Brandy is joining the suspense discussion panel at Turning A New Page Book Festival in Perry, Georgia in January. I cannot wait to meet this talented Georgia author!

Here’s the first line:

Nadine Notaro tapped the marble cornerstone of the historic Foster building as she navigated snowdrifts and hurried for refuge from the cold.

My small town is hosting a big book festival in January 2024! We have 35+ authors participating in panel discussions and author presentations. I am so excited about Turning A New Page! If you live anywhere near middle Georgia, make plans to attend.

Georgia author Brandy Heineman is joining the suspense panel. She writes dual timeline stories inspired by her family history. Her newest book, Honey for The Bones, looks sensational (it’s waiting for me in my TBR). But you will want to check out her other works as well. Mystery, suspense, history, and romance! Don’t they look great?! I am going to queue up Last to Know for my yearly Christmas reading binge. 🙂

TWO HEARTS BROKEN ALONG THE SAME JAGGED EDGE MAKE A GRISLY DISCOVERY DEEP IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Present Day. Solveig Borja fled Virginia to escape the guilt of one reckless night, and once she settles the family estate, she’s Norway-bound and never looking back. Meanwhile, Kyle Benton has come seeking asylum from past sins—which Solveig shatters even as their hopeless romance blooms. But when they discover a skeleton at Rice Caverns, its century-old mystery holds startling links to the here-and-now.

1919. The Great War is won. Gussie Rice longs for her beau’s return from France, until she learns he’s confined at a stateside hospital and her closest confidant is part of the secret. Her bid for love sparks a confrontation that ricochets through time…

Bad blood and escalating threats swirl around Solveig, and Kyle’s new life proves no haven from the old with his brother’s killer trolling the shadows. As the past rears up, the cavern’s hidden places beckon with power to light their hope or to swallow them in utter darkness.

There’s more than one way to be haunted . . .

After a series of agonizing losses, Abby Wells seeks solace with distant relatives in faraway Georgia. Maybe her great-aunt Ruby can answer the questions Abby’s mother never would. But what begins as a search for connection quickly turns with Aunt Ruby’s claims that the old family home is haunted. Desperate to believe in something, Abby throws herself into the ghost hunt—unaware of Aunt Ruby’s schemes, or that the grudges in her bloodlines run generations deep. Her heart wrestles with the land of the living, caught between her ex’s bid for reconciliation and a growing fascination with the house’s handsome caretaker. Yet it’s the burden of mystery that woos her as she calls into the stillness—Are you real?

All she wants for Christmas . . . is an end to this terrible year.

Excerpt

The beauty smiling from the frame on Mr. Borja’s desk drew his eye again. He rolled his chair closer. A graduation portrait? Sunbeams backlit a halo into her hair. Trouble, according to Danny, but what kind?

Mr. Borja had said she didn’t let one mistake hold her down forever. Nothing on what that mistake was. Instead, he drove home his point that Christ’s mercy granted new life, that He empowered His own to turn away from the pull of darkness and walk in the light.

If that weren’t true, Kyle wouldn’t be here. The more people he knew who believed in second chances, the better.

The desk held few surprises overall. A legal pad, a thick volume embossed with Bibelen, a pair of glasses. All things a granddaughter might want.

He returned to his desk, settled at last. He might not have made traction with the authorities, but he’d finally come up with something better than a bouquet.
