This romantic suspense cyberthriller takes up where the previous book ends, but this time there are two new investigators on the newest twist to the terrorist(s)’ plans. Carrie is a rookie investigator with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation. She is plunged into a case featuring multiple murders with multiple causes, yet all pointing to one diabolical hacker. Scott joins the case with his strong cyber-credentials. There are others on the case as well, but the focus is on Carrie and Scott as they seek to uncover the twisting clues and develop a romantic relationship. The subject matter is pretty intense and frightening. Hackers are able to access personal laptops, medical records, traffic lights — you name it — in an effort to cause mayhem and death. The reader is introduced to the bad guy right away, and the look into a psychopath’s mind is intense! As I said, this book continues the first book in the Alaskan Cyber Hunters series, and while I didn’t have a problem getting up to speed, I should have read book one first. That’s definitely on the agenda now! A strong faith message rounds out the romance and suspense nicely. Both main characters are believers, but they have the same doubts and foibles that we all do. I also really liked the setting. Most of the action takes place in Anchorage, a town I have visited twice. It was fun to join the characters for meals at a restaurant we also loved.
If you like your suspense fast-paced, your romance sweet, and your bad guys over the top 😉 , you are going to love 8Down!

Today’s post features historical/romance novels set in the Colonial Period. This is a fascinating period — there’s adventure, danger, hardship. But there’s also hope for a future. No. Alaska was the most amazing place in the world. Which was why she loved having the opportunity to be in charge of the Emergency Operations Center for her region. Her Interior Economic Region encompassed the Denali Borough, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, and the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area. A large and vitally important region. It covered tens of millions of acres. Larger than most states in the lower forty-eight.
Threat assessment was where she excelled. Not only had she served proudly in the United States Air Force as a weather specialist, but she had spent years studying and training in the fields of health care administration and emergency management. This should be her dream job.
So why did that incident with the group the other day get to her? Why did Mr. Oliver’s words of the past get to her? Why did a woman touting that the end was near get to her?
As she sat behind her desk, she stared out the window. Giving herself a mental pep talk wasn’t doing any good.
Action was needed.
A lot of action, actually. Because the biggest threat around the world nowadays was a cyberattack.

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is books read on vacation. While I make sure my Kindle is loaded and the audiobook queue is full on my Audible app, the actual amount of time reading while I am on vacation is rather low. My husband is not one to sit around, so our vacations never include soaking up the sun around a pool or on a beach, or sitting on a porch swing gazing at the mountains. My vacation reading time is usually confined to the few minutes between the time I fall into bed exhausted and falling asleep. 😉 I did manage to read one book front to back on our 10 day trip to the UK last month. I finished False Pretense by Heather Day Gilbert and then set my alarm for a very early rising to make a 6am flight home.

One thing I do is read about the places I will be visiting before I leave for a trip. My husband does the itinerary research and I soak up the setting with novels. Here are a few books that I read prior to our trips to Alaska and Yellowstone.

Two books on my TBR shelf (The Cottage and The Legacy by Michael Phillips) did not get read before we headed to the Shetland Islands a month ago. I regret not reading them, but my trip has inspired me to move them closer to the top of the pile of the have-to-reads. They are part of a series, and if you haven’t read book 1, The Inheritance, I urge you to do so.

I’m not sure where our next adventure will take us. There’s been some talk about Iceland in the late winter to see the northern lights and maybe a return to Alaska next summer. We do have a shorter, less ambitious trip planned in a few days. We are headed to Kentucky for a football game and a visit to The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum. I’m glad I did some advance reading years ago! 😉
