EXCERPT

What is happiness? Is it a place? A time? A choice?

I am afraid of the answer. Because if it is either of the former two, it’s lost to me.

Lost in time, a place that has vanished by my own making and I stand in the wasteland of my choices.

Except, not a wasteland, really. Because I have nearly everything I want.

Nearly.

“Rembrandt, come to bed. It’s cold out.”

The voice lifts from the beautiful woman under our covers, my wife of seven years, which is almost correct.

Close enough, really, to the truth.

Maybe this is my truth.

I’m standing at the open window of my two-story craftsman home. The bare wood floor chills my feet, and a crispness layers the June air, as if the night is on alert.

The sky is a deep indigo, stars staring down at me. The giant dead elm tree at the back of our yard, still here, despite my taking it down in a previous timeline, stretches skeletal arms across the yard and through moonlight waxing my backyard.

In my dreams, I see a swing set there, a little girl, age seven, swinging, her braids flopping with every pump. Daddy, watch me!

She is blonde and sweet, and her laughter fills my soul.

My throat burns and I have my answer.

Happiness is a person.

Movement, the bed clothes rustling, then the creak of the floor and I still as Eve comes up and wraps her strong arms around me. She is warm and solid and real and this should be enough for me.

A kiss to my spine sends a ripple of heat through me.

I’ve missed her so much, my body aches.

“Thinking about your new job?” She smells of the lavender cream she lathers onto her skin every night.

It feels like a lifetime since I’ve wrapped my hands around hers, since we’ve shared this quiet awareness of each other.

Three lifetimes, actually.

Because this is my third try at rewriting my life, to find myself back at the beginning.

And like I said, this time, I nearly got it right.

EXCERPT

It’s the regrets that keep me awake.

The broken hearts, the lives ripped apart. The bitter finales.

The sense that, frankly, it’s not finished.

I’m not finished, no matter how much I try to lie to myself.

With every crime, a clock starts ticking. A forty-eight hour fuse that ignites, chewing away at the evidence. It begins with the victim and from that moment, time gnaws at every scrap of evidence. Eyewitness memories fade, clues are scattered by wind and the daily congestion of life.

The colder the trail grows, the lower the likelihood of finding the perpetrators. This accounts for hundreds of thousand cold cases in dusty file rooms and backup databases around the world.

It also accounts for the fist in my gut every time I have to face the bereaved with a despairing update And, for too long, the indentation in the stool down at the Gold Nugget where Jericho Bloom started pouring the minute I darkened the door.

Days past, but the cases still haunt me, some waking me in the still of night, Eve’s sleeping body like an anchor in the darkness, tethering me to the now. Sometimes she too, awakens, and knowing, finds me and urges the ghosts to quiet, tucking them back inside. Still, a coldness lingers, the names, the what-ifs alive, buzzing under my skin, the images and questions as real as the day I filed the case into the back corridors of my brain.

What if?

What if I could go back to the moment, the beginning of the forty-eight hour window? Maybe everything would be different.

Maybe, but I can’t change the past.

And that’s what I say to the seven-year-old cherub standing in front of me.

“I’m sorry. Gomer’s been missing over a month.” I’m using my most stoic, former homicide Inspector voice, despite the pull of those big blue eyes staring at me. “I don’t have any leads—”

“But Daddy, you’re a detective.” My accuser has curly, golden blonde hair and the way she stares at me, hands on her hips, so much belief in her eyes, I am undone. “You know how to find things.”

Road Trip Reading — Oregon

28 Aug

This week I am again on the west coast with a Reading Road Trip to Oregon. I really, really want to go to Oregon, and soon. My two must-sees? Sea stacks and Powell’s Books. 😉 I’m afraid that this bucket list destination is on hold, so in the meantime I content myself with reading books set in our 33rd state, and following author Lori Benton on Instagram. Oregon’s geographic diversity — coast line and rivers, dense forest and high deserts — provides ample opportunities for photo shoots. Lori posts absolutely beautiful photographs. If you don’t follow her, definitely check her out.

Here are a few books that I have read with an Oregon setting. Not only did they capture the beautiful setting, they were great stories! Hope you find one to love.

Harbor Secrets by Melody Carlson (Legacy of Sunset Cove, book 1)

A Peaceful Coastal Town . . . Threatened by a Storm of Secrets

It’s 1916 when newspaper woman Anna McDowell learns her estranged father has suffered a stroke. Deciding it’s time to repair bridges, Anna packs up her precocious adolescent daughter and heads for her hometown in Sunset Cove, Oregon.

Although much has changed since the turn of the century, some things haven’t. Anna finds the staff of her father’s paper not exactly eager to welcome a woman into the editor-in-chief role, but her father insists he wants her at the helm. Anna is quickly pulled into the charming town and her new position…but just as quickly learns this seaside getaway harbors some dark and dangerous secrets.

With Oregon’s new statewide prohibition in effect, crime has crept along the seacoast and invaded even idyllic Sunset Cove. Anna only meant to get to know her father again over the summer, but instead she finds herself rooting out the biggest story the town has ever seen — and trying to keep her daughter safe from it all.

River’s Song (The Inn at Shining Waters, book 1)

Sometimes when we look back, we are able to see ahead
Following her mother’s funeral, and on the verge of her own midlife crisis, widow Anna Larson returns to the home of her youth to sort out her parents’ belongings, as well as her own turbulent life.

For the first time since childhood, Anna embraces her native heritage, despite the disdain of her vicious mother-in-law.
By transforming her old family home on the banks of the Siuslaw River into The Inn at Shining Waters, Anna hopes to create a place of healing — a place where guests experience peace, grace, and new beginnings. Starting with her own family . . .

Hope Harbor by Irene Hannon (Hope Harbor series, book 1)

Tracy Campbell never wanted to leave Hope Harbor, Oregon, or the idyllic three-generation cranberry farm where she grew up. But life–and love–altered her plans. When tragedy strikes and changes her plans yet again, she finds herself back in her hometown with a floundering farm to run and a heartbreaking secret. Romance is not on her agenda. Nor is it on Michael Hunter’s. The visitor from Chicago has daunting secrets of his own. But when Tracy recruits him to help save a struggling charitable organization, the winds of change begin to sweep through Hope Harbor, bringing healing, hope, and love to countless lives–including their own.

Fan favorite Irene Hannon brings a whole new cast of characters to life in a charming Oregon seaside village. Emotional and heartwarming, this story invites readers to come home to Hope Harbor, where love and hope bloom — and hearts heal.

Shattered Justice by Karen Ball (Family Honor series, book 1)

There’s no way sheriff’s deputy Dan Justice could have prepared for this. He spent a lifetime ensuring his actions and faith live up to the meaning of his name — Avidan: “God is just.” Then injustice invades his world, ripping away what matters most, forever robbing him of the life he once knew. Can his sisters and small-town community — especially one woman who loves Dan—help him overcome the horrors he’s facing? Or will bitterness and anger shatter him forever?

What happens when justice fails the lawman?

Sanctuary, Oregon . A town where the local diner owner makes you drink your milk—no matter how old you are. Where juvenile delinquency means blowing up outhouses. Where folks not only know their neighbors, but care about them. For widowed sheriff’s deputy Dan Justice, it’s a place where he and his kids can heal and grow.

Shelby Wilson loves Sanctuary and her work with troubled teens. Like Jayce Dalton. Sure, he’s as troubled as they come, but Shelby knows Dan is exactly what Jayce needs. She just didn’t expect that Dan might be what she’s always needed, too.

But sleepy little Sanctuary has a dark side, steeped in pain and secrets. Secrets that could destroy everything Dan holds dear. Secrets that will one day have Dan groping through the fog toward a lifeless body—and faith-shattering grief.

Can Dan find sanctuary in the light of God’s justice?

Rooms by James Rubart

On a rainy spring day in Seattle, young software tycoon Micah Taylor receives a cryptic, twenty-five-year-old letter from a great uncle he never knew. It claims a home awaits him on the Oregon coast that will turn his world inside out. Suspecting a prank, Micah arrives at Cannon Beach to discover a stunning brand new nine-thousand square foot house. And after meeting Sarah Sabin at a nearby ice cream shop, he has two reasons to visit the beach every weekend.

When bizarre things start happening in the rooms of the home, Micah suspects they have some connection to his enigmatic new friend, Rick, the town mechanic. But Rick will only say the house is spiritual. This unnerves Micah because his faith slipped away like the tide years ago, and he wants to keep it that way. But as he slowly discovers, the home isn’t just spiritual, it’s a physical manifestation of his soul, which God uses to heal Micah’s darkest wounds and lead him into an astonishing new destiny.

Book Review: Memory’s Door

4 Sep

686079_w185The prophecy brought them together. But the Wolf has risen, and now their greatest battle begins.

The four members of Warriors Riding have learned to wage war in the supernatural, to send their spirits inside people’s souls, to battle demonic forces, and to bring deep healing to those around them.

But their leader Reece is struggling with the loss of his sight. Brandon is being stalked at his concerts by a man in the shadows. Dana’s career is threatening to bury her. And Marcus questions his sanity as he seems to be slipping in and out of alternate realities.

And now the second part of the prophecy has come true. The Wolf is hunting them and has set his trap. He circles, feeding on his supernatural hate of all they stand for. And he won’t stop until he brings utter destruction to their bodies . . . and their souls.

JRubart-170James L. Rubart is a professional marketer and speaker. He is the author of five novels, including the best-seller “Rooms” and award-winning “Soul’s Gate,” the book that precedes “Memory’s Door” in the Well Spring series. Rubart and his wife have two sons and live in the Pacific Northwest.

Find out more about James at http://jameslrubart.com.

My Impressions:

I read Soul’s Gate, book 1 in the Well Spring series by James L. Rubart, a few months ago and loved it (review HERE). Well, Memory’s Door, book 2 in the series, is even better. Rubart brings us a speculative novel that exposes the lies and obstacles that keep us from a deeper relationship with God. This series will make you think and keep you thinking long after the last page is turned.

Memory’s Door takes up the action a year after all that transpired in the first book. Reece is still awaiting healing. But he and the other members of Warriors Riding have made great strides in their training and in the teaching and training of others wanting to experience freedom in Christ. The time has come to confront the Wolf, but the enemy employs all the weapons at his disposal to defeat the group.

The things that the four characters face may be fantastical but have their roots in reality. Marcus, Dana, Brandon, and Reece are attacked by things common to all believers — past regrets, guilt, pride, self-pity, legalism. And while their fight takes place in realms far apart from the world we live in, it is a wonderful metaphor for what is really going on in the heavenly realms. I especially like that Rubart emphasizes the power of God’s word as an ultimate weapon against Satan’s attack. There is significant victory in Memory’s Door, but the war is certainly not over. I look forward to book 3.

Fantastic imagery, deep spiritual truths, well-structured writing and well-developed characters — all elements of Memory’s Door. If you like speculative writing and a great story, check out this book.

Highly Recommended.

Book Review: Soul’s Gate

15 Jul

686051_w185“Every now and then we get a break from reality. A glimpse into the other world that is more real than the reality we live in 99 percent of our days. The Bible is about a world of demons and angels and great evil and even greater glory.”

What if you could travel inside another person’s soul? To battle for them. To be part of Jesus healing their deepest wounds. To help set them free to step boldly into their divinely designed future.

Thirty years ago that’s exactly what Reece Roth did. Until tragedy shattered his life and ripped away his future.

Now God has drawn Reece out of the shadows to fulfill a prophecy spoken over him three decades ago. A prophecy about four warriors with the potential to change the world . . . if Reece will face his deepest regret and teach them what he has learned.

They gather at a secluded and mysterious ranch deep in the mountains of Colorado, where they will learn to see the spiritual world around them with stunning clarity—and how to step into the supernatural.

Their training is only the beginning. The four have a destiny to pursue a freedom even Reece doesn’t fully fathom. But they have an enemy hell-bent on destroying them and he’ll stop at nothing to keep them from their quest for true freedom and the coming battle of souls.

James L._Rubart_medJames L. Rubart is a professional marketer, speaker, and writer. He serves on the board of the Northwest Christian Writers Association and lives with his wife and sons in Seattle, Washington.

My Impressions:

James L. Rubart won the 2013 Christy Award for Visionary Fiction and the 2013 Inspy Award for Speculative Fiction with his novel, Soul’s Gate. After reading this book, I heartily concur with the judges’ ruling — Soul’s Gate will take you on a challenging journey into what a deeper life in the Spirit can be.

It is time for the prophecy spoken years ago to come true in the life of Reece Roth. It is time to train the men and women of the prophecy to live a life in the Spirit, to war for others’ souls. Dana, Marcus, and Brandon are the ready and slightly willing participants, but their training involves stepping way out of the box and their comfort zones. It has also gotten the notice of the other side, and demons will not hesitate to use everything they are allowed to thwart Reece’s efforts and his students’ training.

Speculative fiction (according to Wikipedia) is an umbrella term encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres, kind of a what-if type of writing that stretches and challenges the thinking of the reader. I think Christian fiction is very suitable to the speculative genre because of its grounding in the supernatural. God acts in ways we often don’t understand forcing us to live a life of faith, not of sight. Rubart employs the truths of Scripture to create a what-if world of journeying into the soul’s of  others to wage a battle to tear down the strongholds created from the lies of the deceiver. In Soul’s Gate, Rubart shows a new way to pray, to worship, to fight the spiritual wars that are all around us, but unseen to most Christians. Dana, Marcus, Brandon and Reece have lies that must be demolished, lies that they cling to, that define who they are. The freedom that they achieve once the bonds are broken is beyond any they could have imagined.

Two things that I took away from reading Soul’s Gate are:  1) prayer involves more listening than talking and involves a big involvement in people’s lives and 2) that spiritual warfare is something very real that Christians should be on the look out for and embrace in their walk with Christ. This book got me thinking and thinking some more. There were parts that encouraged me and convicted me and some that moved me to tears. This book requires time to savor the truths expressed and as such is not a quick read. It also is not a pure entertainment read, although it did keep me turning the pages to see what would happen next in the adventure. So, I definitely recommend Soul’s Gate, but encourage you to make sure you have plenty of time to read it — do not rush this book!

Highly Recommended.
