Book Review: Memory’s Door

4 Sep

686079_w185The prophecy brought them together. But the Wolf has risen, and now their greatest battle begins.

The four members of Warriors Riding have learned to wage war in the supernatural, to send their spirits inside people’s souls, to battle demonic forces, and to bring deep healing to those around them.

But their leader Reece is struggling with the loss of his sight. Brandon is being stalked at his concerts by a man in the shadows. Dana’s career is threatening to bury her. And Marcus questions his sanity as he seems to be slipping in and out of alternate realities.

And now the second part of the prophecy has come true. The Wolf is hunting them and has set his trap. He circles, feeding on his supernatural hate of all they stand for. And he won’t stop until he brings utter destruction to their bodies . . . and their souls.

My Impressions:

I read Soul’s Gate, book 1 in the Well Spring series by James L. Rubart, a few months ago and loved it (review HERE). Well, Memory’s Door, book 2 in the series, is even better. Rubart brings us a speculative novel that exposes the lies and obstacles that keep us from a deeper relationship with God. This series will make you think and keep you thinking long after the last page is turned.

Memory’s Door takes up the action a year after all that transpired in the first book. Reece is still awaiting healing. But he and the other members of Warriors Riding have made great strides in their training and in the teaching and training of others wanting to experience freedom in Christ. The time has come to confront the Wolf, but the enemy employs all the weapons at his disposal to defeat the group.

The things that the four characters face may be fantastical but have their roots in reality. Marcus, Dana, Brandon, and Reece are attacked by things common to all believers — past regrets, guilt, pride, self-pity, legalism. And while their fight takes place in realms far apart from the world we live in, it is a wonderful metaphor for what is really going on in the heavenly realms. I especially like that Rubart emphasizes the power of God’s word as an ultimate weapon against Satan’s attack. There is significant victory in Memory’s Door, but the war is certainly not over. I look forward to book 3.

Fantastic imagery, deep spiritual truths, well-structured writing and well-developed characters — all elements of Memory’s Door. If you like speculative writing and a great story, check out this book.

Highly Recommended.
