“Sticks and stones will break your bones, if you make me hurt you.”

Some truths are better left buried, but Jace Walker is determined to unearth the skeletons in her family’s closet. Leverage is all she needs to keep her brother alive, and she’s willing to risk everything to save him.

Even her life.
But is she willing to risk the lives of her friends?

Holly and Jordan take on the case, but what should be a simple investigation takes a deadly turn when they stumble onto a murder. Family secrets are the least of their concerns as their path intertwines with a killer intent on remaining hidden.

He doesn’t want to be found.
He doesn’t want to be known.
And anyone who threatens his anonymity dies.

Excerpt

Maybe my history was making me overly cautious, but I would rather look paranoid than end up in the trunk of a car.

I backed up a few steps. One of the alleys would take me through to the back side of the agency, and I could come in through the storage room.

As I turned to go back the way I had come, the car rumbled forward.

I quickened my steps to the nearest alley and turned into it. The car engine roared louder as the vehicle sped up before grinding to a stop where I’d been standing a moment before.

My heart jolted, and I broke into a run.

I cut left down the intersecting alley and collided with the first door I saw—a back exit for one of the local businesses. I wrenched at the handle. Locked.

I pounded a hand against the door. “Help!”

A car door closed.

He was coming after me on foot. I stumbled back from the building and searched for a place to hide.

About The Author

CC Warrens

Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope. Writing has been a slowly blossoming dream inside her for most of her life until one day it spilled out onto the pages that would become her first published book.

If she’s not writing, she’s attempting to bake something—however catastrophic that might be—or she’s enjoying the beauty of the outdoors with her husband. One of the many things she’s learned since she started this journey is that the best way to write a book is to go on a long stroll with her husband. That is when the characters—from their backgrounds to the moments that make them laugh or bubble over with anger—come to life.

Mini-Book Review — Dragonfly Ashes

26 Jan

If you are looking for a spooky-read, then you really need to check out the Cherry Creek Mysteries by C. C. Warrens. I loved book 1, Firefly Diaries, and book 2 Dragonfly Ashes continues the suspense-filled goodness. (I recommend that you don’t skip book 1.) The small town of Cherry Creek is the setting for a legendary serial killer and it seems like that the past has re-emerged. Author Noelle McKenzie is drawn into the mystery as a stalker shadows her and her adopted daughter. Or is it the Dragonfly come back for revenge? This novel is a puzzler as well as an edge-of-the-seat read. It sure kept me guessing while giving me definite chill bumps! Read this one with the lights on!

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

(I borrowed the ebook from Kindle Unlimited. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Flames cast an ominous orange glow against the night sky as a barn catches fire, consuming everything within: from the hay bales to the victim bound and left to die.

News of the murder sparks fear in the small community of Cherry Creek, and that fear only grows when the arsonist leaves a calling card belonging to a killer everyone believed was long dead.

The Dragonfly mysteriously disappeared from the local asylum decades ago, stepping out of existence and into legend. The story draws the attention of Noelle McKenzie, a local author, and she digs into details from the past while Captain Derek Dempsey searches for evidence in the present.

But there’s more going on than either of them suspect, and this threat doesn’t just come knocking; it kicks in the door with a wicked plan and a lit match. If they don’t stop the arsonist soon, there may not be anything left of Cherry Creek to save.

Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope. **Disclaimer from the author**

If you’re looking for a cozy mystery or romantic comedy with an ending wrapped up in a nice little bow, well . . . these books aren’t for you. My books are intended to reflect the real world—a world that is messy, terrifying, wonderful, and sprinkled with humor. My hope is that these books will touch someone who has been through something traumatic and remind them that even in our darkest moments, God is with us.

First Line Friday — Dragonfly Ashes

28 Nov

The second book in C. C. WarrensCherry Creek Mystery series, Dragonfly Ashes, was just as good as the first, Firefly Diaries. All your favorite characters are back in this seriously twisty and spooky novel. If you haven’t read either, then you have some great reading ahead!

Here’s the first line:

Excerpt

Despite the warm May temperature, memories shivered through my bones—bones that had been bruised and broken under the roof of the two-story structure in front of me.

The cream-and-blue house sat vacant now, its once manicured lawn overgrown, flower boxes beneath the windows sprouting weeds, the screen door stained with black spray paint and scrub brush streaks.

It was strangely silent.

But in the wind that billowed my jacket and teased the loose strands of my red hair, I could hear the echo of my foster siblings’ cries.

Holly, I’m scared.

Make it stop, Holly. It hurts.

Their sweet little voices, filled with such fear, ripped at my heart as viciously now as they had then, and tears spilled onto my cheeks.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you,” I whispered, my words carried away by a gust of wind that rattled the For Sale sign hanging from the mailbox.
