First Line Friday –Mt. Moriah’s Wake

19 Jul

Happy Friday! I am continuing spotlighting books that my friends have recommended with Mt. Moriah’s Wake by Melissa Norton Carro. This book is indie published Southern fiction endorsed by Amy Grant! Check out the details below.

Here’s the first line:

For every person, there is a place.

Orphaned at age eight, JoAnna Wilson was raised by her eccentric aunt in the bucolic southern community of Mt. Moriah. Now a twenty-six-year old would-be writer, JoAnna faces several crossroads: in her marriage, in her career, and in her faith. She left home for Chicago in 1997 immediately following the murder of her best friend, Grace. Now she comes back to Mt. Moriah for the first time in four years to attend her aunt’s funeral—and realizes that she must confront both the profound sorrow she feels over Grace’s death and the mysterious guilt she carries. She must finally grieve.

A hauntingly sweet story of love and loss that alternates between JoAnna’s childhood in Mt. Moriah, her life in Chicago and her present encounters upon returning home, Mt. Moriah’s Wake ponders deep questions: When we experience unspeakable tragedy, do we see ourselves as victim or survivor? Is it possible to regain happiness in the face of such? And how do we find our faith again, once it is lost?

As her past and present worlds collide, JoAnna grapples with these questions—and her journey moves toward an unexpected conclusion.

A native southerner, Melissa Norton Carro has over twenty years of experience in marketing and communications, including her own business, Norton Carro Communications. She has edited textbooks and been a non-fiction ghostwriter, as well as a regular copyeditor for Gannett Publishing. She received her Bachelor of Arts, with Honors, from Vanderbilt University, where she currently works. Carro was a closet fiction writer for years while raising three daughters, and Mt. Moriah’s Wake is her first novel. She writes a weekly blog, In the Middle, about life in the sandwich generation and is currently working on another novel, Bagels at Nine. She lives in Nashville with her husband and blue heeler.

About The Book

Until Our Time Comes

Title: Until Our Time Comes
Author: Nicole M. Miller
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: July 2, 2024
Genre: WWII Historical Romance

American horse trainer Adia Kensington is living her dream of working at the famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland, where they breed the best Arabian horses in the world. But her plans to bring the priceless stallion Lubor to the US are derailed when the German army storms into her adopted country in 1939. Little does she know this is just the beginning of six long years of occupation that will threaten her beloved horses at every turn.

Bret Conway is at Janów Podlaski under the guise of a news reporter, but his true mission is intelligence gathering for the British. That and keeping Adia safe, which is harder and harder to do as she insists they must evacuate 250 horses to save them from being stolen, sold, or eaten by the invading forces. What follows will test their physical, mental, and emotional strength, as well as their faith in God, humankind, and each other.

Drawn from true events of World War II, this epic story of escape, capture, resistance, and love from debut novelist Nicole M. Miller will thunder into your heart like a herd of beautiful horses across a raging river.

Excerpt

Despite her steady tone, the mare was like a rubber band pulled to the breaking point. She could snap at any minute, giving in to her most primal instinct of flight. Adia needed to maneuver the horse out of the crowd or she’d bolt and hurt someone.

Adia looked through the bustle of people for Ewan, her heart thumping at seeing the spot empty where she’d left him. “Ewan?” she called out. She gripped the horse but lost her focus on her.

Another pair of planes dipped overhead. The loud pop of gunfire erupted nearby, and people cried out in horror. Plumes of gunpowder filled the square, the acrid smell overpowering that of human sweat and smashed produce.

Adia braced for the mare’s reaction a heartbeat too late.

Lyra pulled the reins free, the leather searing Adia’s palms. She lunged forward, knocked Adia over, and kicked her back hooves out as she turned to flee. A hoof slammed Adia in the shoulder, which sent her stumbling back into the overturned fruit stand.

Pain coursed through her body as the bright daylight and the roar of the crowd faded away.

Genre: Young Adult & Middle Grade Contemporary Christian Fiction

After her dad is tragically killed, Dakota Moore’s mom moves her to northern Minnesota where Dak discovers an outcast classmate may be a reclusive miracle worker. She thinks she found him too late. The truth is, she met him just in time. Will Dak discover the miracle worker’s secrets before the next tragedy strikes?

Now, tucked into a secluded A-frame near a beaver-infested creek with her strong Sioux mom and her lisping little brother, Dak faces a new school and a trio of mean girls. Seemingly alone, she buries herself in a design app and self pity until an old blind man, his curly-haired horse named Eyeballs, a quirky dragon-doodling classmate, and a strawberry blonde with delicious sun-kissed freckles give her four reasons to keep on living. Excerpt

THE WOODS & THE TREE, CHAPTER  1.

This land of 10,000 lakes is full of wildlife, like white-tail deer, majestic elk, and clever coyotes, foxes, and wolves. On rare occasions, mountain lions and black bears make appearances. Where we lived, there were a baffling number of beavers, too. I found a blog post detailing efforts to reintroduce them to parts of northern Minnesota. It must have worked because dozens of tree stumps were gnawed to chiseled tips around me. Sometimes, the beavers finished the job, and the tree tipped, but sometimes, the semi-aquatic rodents didn’t quite finish the job, like some beaver mafia warning the other trees that they, too, may end up kneecapped and submerged in a nearby creek. That day, on day sixty-seven, a towering white pine balancing on a popsicle stick trunk finally toppled. I was in the wrong

Her Part to Play JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Her Part to Play by Jenny Erlingsson hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Her Part to Play

Title: Her Part to Play
Author: Jenny Erlingsson
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: June 18, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Desperate for extra income after her mother’s passing, Adanne accepts a last-minute job as a makeup artist for a movie filming in her small Alabama hometown. She’s working to save her parents’ legacy and help her brother, but the money hardly seems worth having to face the actor who got her fired from her last job in Hollywood.

John Pope has made his share of mistakes over the years. But after turning his life over to God and enduring a messy breakup, he’s ready to start rebuilding his career. Imagine his surprise when the woman called in to cover for his usual makeup artist is a quiet but feisty newcomer on the set–and definitely not a fan.

Sparks of tension–and could that be attraction?–fly between them, but Adanne hates the spotlight, and John’s scheming manager has bigger plans for him than to end up with the humble makeup girl from the small-town South. Can these star-crossed lovers find their way to happiness? Or will the bright lights of Hollywood blind their eyes to what’s right in front of them?

Debut author Jenny Erlingsson’s diverse cast comes alive with faith, romance, and a touch of humor to create a story worthy of the big screen.

Excerpt

Adanne swallowed. How’d she go from a sleepy makeup artist to standing in as an extra? Most of the scenes were blocked before she finished applying the makeup. Surely someone else could do this with the stunt double instead of her standing in the last place she wanted to be . . . at the center of everyone’s attention.

Before she could come up with a better alternative, the stand-in sauntered out of an office building adjacent to the general store. Except, it wasn’t a double.

He approached her, adjusting the suspenders attached to his trousers as he listened to the production assistant who was walking beside him. Adanne blinked, swallowing down the bile rising in her throat. Surely the Lord would allow the Alabama clay to open and swallow her right up. Away from the man she’d been grateful to avoid since she’d stepped foot on set. The careless actor whose antics got her fired three years ago.

Excerpts

A Baby in The Mix

At Buy the Book, the cowbell clanged as she entered, and she reached behind the door to still it. If Sarai was sleeping, she didn’t want the cowbell to wake her. She found Micah’s Aunt Trish behind the register and asked her where Micah was. The eccentric woman didn’t even look up from her romance novel. She simply pointed to the far corner.

Aimee tiptoed over and found him occupying an old recliner in the children’s reading nook. Sarai lay sleeping on his chest, and an empty baby bottle sat on the table beside him.

Aimee crouched down in front of him. She must be seeing things. “You fed her?”

“I did, and I changed her diaper,” he whispered. “We’ve had a good time.” He pointed to a copy of The Lord of the Rings. “I thought I’d get her started on good literature. She seems partial to Frodo.”

Sarai looked so small against his expanse of chest. “How did you know how to—”

“Change a diaper?” He chuckled and patted the baby’s back when she stirred. “You might not have a horde of nieces and nephews, but I do. You’ve met my sister. Don’t think for a minute that she’d let me escape without changing diapers.”

“But yesterday you didn’t want to even hold Sarai.”

He met her gaze and exhaled a long breath. “I was afraid I’d become attached.”

“And now?”

He placed a soft kiss on Sarai’s head. “And now I am. Two girls have my heart.”

Five Things You Know About Me

The place had been updated although, thankfully, it still smelled of roasting coffee beans and fresh-baked scones. Andrea drew in a deep breath in a desperate bid to quell the emotions swirling through her like the foam designs on most of the hot drinks she could see.

Mario half stood as she pulled out her chair, and she gestured for him to sit.

“I hope you don’t mind. The line-up was long, so I took the liberty …” He nodded at the paper cup sitting at her place, steam curling from the hole in the lid. A massive chocolate chip cookie lay on a napkin next to it.

Andrea settled on the seat and wrapped her fingers around the cup, lifting it closer to inhale the steam. A frozen drink would have been more appropriate, given the weather, but it was never a bad time for chai tea latte.

Mario inclined his head toward the cup. “Still your favorite?”

“It is, actually. Thank you.”

“The cookie too?”

“Of course not, since I’m a grown-up now and only eat grown-up desserts.”

“Grown-up desserts.”

“That’s right.”

A gleam ignited in his eyes as he grasped the edge of the napkin and dragged it closer to himself. “Then you won’t mind if I …”

With the tip of her finger, Andrea stabbed the corner of the napkin nearest her to hold it in place. “Leave it.”

Mercy’s Detour

Paige Cunningham danced a jig in her chair as she signed the last line of the last page of too many pages. She was now officially homeless.

And she could at last fulfill her promise to Kellen. How had her husband been dead for fifteen years already? As usual, the thought of him put a damper on her joy. If not for her, he’d still be alive to share in this journey he’d laughingly called their Midlife-Together Crisis. Why hadn’t she trusted him?

“Here’s your check.”

Paige shook off the grinning image of Kellen from her mind and looked up at the also-smiling title company employee who’d just entered the room and handed her the check.

“Enjoy your midlife crisis.”

Paige stared down at the check, and her eyes widened. “Thank you,” she managed to squeak out. Never in her life had she imagined holding a check made out with six figures, especially one that began with the number three.

“You’re quite welcome.” The woman nodded and left the room.

“You’ve done well for yourself.” The title agent seated across the desk from her straightened the paperwork and secured it in a manila folder.

“I have.” Forty-five years old and debt free. How many other people could say that?

Gathering her wits, she tucked the check into her billfold, which she stuffed in the bottom of her purse. She retrieved her laptop, stood, and shook the hand of the title agent, thanking her for facilitating the process seamlessly. All proof to Paige that she was hearing God correctly.

Now, she prayed her driving trip around the United States would go just as smoothly.

Not by Chance

Engrossed in her search of the Classics bookshelves, Lily did not see the crash. But the deafening bang of metal slamming on brick made her jump, her whole body flinching. Glass sprayed the room when the front window to her right shattered. Screams from the bookstore clerk and others outside on the street pierced the air. Pinpricks peppered her right arm and leg. She brought her hand to her cheek, gasping when it came away bloody.

The shock rooted her to the floor. She gaped at the broken store window below which the crumpled front end of a car intruded through the cracked wall. Behind the spiderwebbed windshield of the vehicle, a woman’s head slumped onto the steering wheel.

In a moment, a warm presence enveloped Lily from behind. “Are you alright?” A deep, reassuring voice urged in her ear, “Let’s get you to the back, out of harm’s way,”

Mute, Lily pointed to the injured driver, then cast a panicked look at the man behind her.

He rushed to the shop door, yanking futilely on the handle, then scanned the smashed window, calling to the victim, who stirred slightly. He turned back to Lily. “The whole wall has shifted from the impact. But she’s alive. We can only pray the ambulance arrives quickly.” He pulled a phone from his pocket and punched in the number. A deep crease between his dark eyebrows only relaxed once the message had been relayed.

Piper’s Sweet Dream

“Well, what makes Chocolate Brews unique is our array and combinations of cocoa flavors,” Finn said, “which a lot of people also add to their coffee.”

Mary wrinkled her nose. “You’d have to sell me on that idea. I’m a coffee girl, although,” she added with a smile, “I could be persuaded to try something new.”

“Then for you I suggest one of our most popular mocha drinks.” He turned toward Piper. “Coffee or cocoa?”

“Oh, she’s 100% cocoa,” Mary said. “She knows more about chocolate than Google.”

“Really? Interesting.”

Piper raised her eyebrows in a friendly challenge. “What would you suggest for me?”

He studied her for a long moment, a smile in his eyes, and her toes curled in her sandals.

“I’ve got a new drink I think you’ll like. I’ll be back in a few.” He slid a bowl of what looked like popcorn and trail mix in front of them before stepping away.

“You didn’t mention meeting him at the bookstore,” Mary hissed. “He’s gorgeous. Those eyes.” She took a handful of the mix. “Wow. Even this trail mix smells like cocoa.”

“It’s not like we had a long conversation,” Piper whispered, sampling the snack. “I don’t even know his name.”

“So he’s fair game?”

Piper’s hesitation made Mary hoot with laughter, which stopped when she received Piper’s elbow. “Fine.” She gave a dramatic sigh. “I’ll leave it alone for now but if you take too long—”

Mini-Book Review — Secondary Target

8 Jul

A ruthless murderer. A deadly secret. An unbreakable love.

After the brutal murder of her mother and brother twelve years ago, Corina Roberts built a new life in Kentucky. But when strange things begin to happen, she is thrust into a perilous game of life and death. With nowhere else to turn, her best hope of survival depends on her ex-boyfriend, army veteran Bryce Jessup.

Recently returned from service, Bryce has every intention of staying away from Corina, but when threats close in around her, he isn’t willing to leave her safety to chance. As their search for answers uncovers lethal secrets her detective father kept hidden, Bryce and Corina must untangle the mystery of the merciless killer intent on terrorizing and eliminating Corina’s family before it’s too late.

My Impressions:

I am always up for a new author of romantic suspense. Secondary Target by Angela Carlisle looked like a book right up my alley. I liked that the main characters were not in law enforcement — somewhat unusual for the genre — and that they were given a second chance at love by the author. The premise of the novel — a stalker set to avenge past wrongs — was intriguing too. But I have to say the novel fell a little flat for me. I had trouble with the female MC, Corina, not listening to sound advice and basically repeatedly putting herself in danger. She felt like she had to do it on her own, even though time after time she was proven wrong. I also guessed who the bad guy was early in the action. I like to be kept on my toes, and this book just didn’t do that. But . . . the faith message was strong and their were a few twists I didn’t see coming. So, I guess Secondary Target was just an okay read for me. It is a debut, so I am hoping subsequent books in the series will prove stronger. This novel has pretty strong reviews on Amazon, so I recommend you check it out for yourself.

Audience: Adults.

( I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House. All opinions are mine alone.)

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Treason Trail by Kit Hawthorne, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Treason Trail

Title: Treason Trail
Series: Cape Fear Legacy #3
Author: Kit Hawthorne
Publisher: Independently Published
Release Date: June 18, 2024
Genre: Sweet Historical Romance

A mysterious stranger holds the key to the fate of the nation.

In the final days of the American Revolutionary War, Nessa Shaw tends to the sick and wounded at the Continental Army camp in Charlestown, South Carolina. When she stumbles upon a man lying unconscious on a forest trail, she quickly realizes he is unlike any patient she has ever encountered. With no memory of his past, his only clues to his identity are his first name—August—and the certainty that he is a Patriot. Against her better judgment, Nessa grows closer to August, trusting him with secrets that could cost her dearly. But when she discovers a deadly plot that could change the course of the war, Nessa must question everything she thought she knew about August and his true allegiances.

Excerpt

Her eyes filled with fresh tears. “What if the war isn’t ending at all? What if the British have been stalling for time for their conspiracy? Can they truly mean to go on fighting? Both sides are exhausted—at least, our side is, and their side appears to be, but maybe that’s part of their plan, to make us think that, when in fact they’re just gathering their strength to strike again.”

She was gripping his hands with both of hers. “I can’t do it anymore, August. I can’t keep changing sheets in the hospital and spoon-feeding broth to men who are never going to get better. I want to leave this dirty, overcrowded camp forever, and go home to my family, and breathe the clean air. I can hardly remember what peace is like. It seems to belong to some mythical past. I want to get up in the morning and make a good breakfast, eggs and porridge and milk, and real coffee, and not a scrap of salt pork in sight. I want to buy dress goods, and make new gowns, and not mend the same shirts over and over until there’s nothing left of them but patches. I want to plant a garden without wondering if British raiders will come and destroy it. I want to see cattle and horses grazing in green pastures, with plenty of flesh covering their bones. I want to lie down at night in a soft bed with a real roof over my head, and hear the wind in the pine trees, and not be afraid.”

He put his arm around her again and drew her to him. She clung to him and wept. He wished he had words of comfort to offer, but what could he say? That everything would turn out all right in the end? That he wouldn’t let anything hurt her? He hadn’t even managed to discover something as simple as his own identity. Nay, he would not insult her with empty promises. Action, not speech, was what was needed.
