Is she the pursuer…

Or the pursued?

When a body was found at the edge of the bayou, police detective Charlotte Reid knew the serial killer who murdered her sister was back. And if she didn’t stop him, he’d kill again. FBI special agent Austin Walsh insisted Charlotte couldn’t do it on her own. But then the murderer gave Charlotte a deadly challenge—catch him, or she’d be his next victim…

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.

Excerpt

Before following her out, Austin took a minute to look at the photographs of the four victims. He would put up one of Ginny Gerard as soon as they received the photo from her family. “You have not been forgotten.” He spoke to the murdered women like they were standing in the room. In his mind and heart, they were. “Your killer will face justice for what he did.” He turned his gaze to the picture of Ruby, whose resemblance to Charlotte was striking. “And I promise to keep Charlotte safe.” With notebook and pen in hand, he turned off the lights and left the room, locking the door behind him, securing the proof of stolen lives.

Ellie hates being dirty. Lillie wants to be a detective. Ellie thinks Lillie should quit spying. Weeks before their twelfth birthday, their world turns upside down.

Farms in Triple Gap, Georgia face bankruptcy and fueling stations run out of gasoline. Then a stranger comes to town that changes everything.

When Lillie turns her habit of spying into serious detective work, she discovers the stranger harbors a buried secret, one she’s determined to unearth. But nothing prepares her for the truth. Can Lillie unravel the mystery in time to save her home?

Guess Who is in God's Family JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Guess Who Is in God’s Family by Karen Ferguson, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Guess Who is in Gods Family

Title: Guess Who Is in God’s Family
Series: Questions for Kids
Author: Karen Ferguson
Publisher: Ambassador International
Release Date: June 4, 2024
Genre: Children’s Picture Book

When Lucy comes across some old family pictures, she has a lot of questions for Papa Joe. Who are these people? Why doesn’t she look like them? As Papa Joe tells Lucy about her family, he shares with her the uniqueness that God created in each of us from the very beginning, all the way back to our first ancestors, Adam and Eve. What follows is a wild adventure through the Bible, where Lucy and her papa discover God’s love and faithfulness for all people throughout all of history. In this second book in the Questions for Kids series, discover how much God loves diversity and how God created your family in the most beautiful and perfect way.

Excerpt

Papa slowly closed the Bible, while Lucy sat quietly. She had been excited to learn about this first family, but now she felt sad thinking about all that had been lost in the garden

and about all the times she didn’t do what was right. Papa Joe could see she was troubled.

“Lucy, don’t be sad. God still had a good plan for the family He created. That

includes us! People may look different, come from different countries, and speak different languages; but we all have some important things in common. We are all created in God’s image, and we all mess up. We struggle to obey God sometimes, but He never stops loving us.

“Lucy, always remember and don’t ever forget: we are all related, and we are all created by God, Whose love for us is never-changing, never-failing, and never-ending. And

the great news is that from the very beginning, God had a rescue plan. Someone special was coming, Lucy, and He would save the world!”

August Book Club Pick — Cold Vengeance

1 Aug

My book club had a fun elimination game to pick this month’s book. Everyone put a title of a book in the basket and then drew. The last one chosen won! So in August we are reading Cold Vengeance by Nancy Mehl. Luckily I had read the first two books in the series, or I would be in a serious reading time crunch! Please join us in our discussion. You know you want a good series to binge read. 😉

When a renowned crime podcaster vanishes without a trace, former FBI behavioral analysts turned private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are called upon to track her down. As they wade through the evidence she left behind, they unearth a startling connection–she may have discovered the existence of an unknown killer, and he will stop at nothing to carry out a deadly plan.

As the pair delves deeper, they soon find themselves the targets of a relentless enemy determined to silence them. With their lives–and hearts–on the line, can they confront the evil that threatens them before it consumes them both?

Nancy Mehl lives in Missouri, with her husband Norman, and her puggle, Watson. She’s authored over fifty books and is currently at work on a new FBI suspense series for Bethany House Publishing.

All of Nancy’s novels have an added touch – something for your spirit as well as your soul. “I welcome the opportunity to share my faith through my writing,” Nancy says. “It’s a part of me and of everything I think or do. God is number one in my life. I wouldn’t be writing at all if I didn’t believe that this is what He’s called me to do. I hope everyone who reads my books will walk away with the most important message I can give them: God is good, and He loves you more than you can imagine. He has a good plan especially for your life, and there is nothing you can’t overcome with His help.”

You can find out more about Nancy by visiting her Web site at: http://www.nancymehl.com. She also is active on the Suspense Sisters: http://www.suspensesisters.blogspot.com and on FaceBook!

If You Liked . . . On Moonberry Lake

31 Jul

My book club really liked On Moonberry Lake by Holly Varni. One of the themes of the book is discovering family in a community. Main character, Cora, longed for the connection and closeness of family all her life. In the midst of grief and lostness, she finds it. The fun and funny characters are also a big treat! If you liked this book or are looking for books like it, then here are a few reading recommendations.

The Cedar Key by Stephenia McGee

Could the key to Casey’s future be hidden in someone else’s past?

Casey Adams unexpectedly inherits an old Victorian house full of other people’s memories. Stuck in a quirky little Mississippi town, Casey’s hope for a fresh start died as soon she had to lay the grandmother she’d just met to rest.

But Grandma Ida carried secrets beyond the grave.

Before her death Ida carefully planned a trail of clues to help Casey unlock the Macintyre family secrets and finally explain why they abandoned her. But each of Ida’s letters will only come from Casey’s handsome—and often frustrating—new neighbor. As Casey pieces together the stories behind the objects filling her grandmother’s house, she embarks on a heart-stirring journey that rattles her foundations, ignites her faith, and leads her to a startling discovery that will reshape her future. But only if she can face the lies that have been slowly tearing her apart.

Dearest Dorothy, Are We There Yet? by Charlene Ann Baumbich

On the outskirts of the pastoral Illinois town of Partonville, Illinois, eighty-seven-year-old Dorothy Wetstra lives on her farm, venturing out to drive around in her 1976 Lincoln Continental—affectionately dubbed “The Tank”—play bunco with her pals, or grab a stool at Harry’s counter, where she can stay on top of the town’s latest shenanigans (most of which she is responsible for).

But when a visitor comes to town with a proposition, Dorothy finds herself faced with a decision that could change her beloved town, and her life. Before long, her gift for shaking things up may come in handy . . .

This is the first in the delightful small-town series starring “the plucky 80-something grandma who’s a demon at the wheel” (Publishers Weekly).

The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner

For the first time in his life, Pete has everything to lose.

After years of drifting, fifty-year-old Pete Ryman has settled down with his potbellied pig, Pearl, in the small Montana town of Sleeping Grass–a place he never expected to see again. It’s not the life he dreamed of, but there aren’t many prospects for a high-school dropout like him.

Elderly widow Wilma Jacobsen carries a burden of guilt over her part in events that led to Pete leaving Sleeping Grass decades ago. Now that he’s back, she’s been praying for the chance to make things right, but she never expected God’s answer to leave her flat on her face–literally–and up to her ears in meddling.

When the younger sister Pete was separated from as a child shows up in Sleeping Grass with her eleven-year-old son, Pete is forced to face a past he buried long ago, and Wilma discovers her long-awaited chance at redemption may come at a higher cost than she’s willing to pay.

First Line Friday — To Love A Falcon

26 Jul

Happy Friday! Today I am spotlighting a 1940s-era novel based on a Russian fairytale. Sound intriguing? I think so too! I haven’t read To Love A Falcon by Nancy C. Williams . . . yet. Let me know if you have and what you thought.

Here’s the first line:

Mikhail paced along the packed gray sand at the beachfront, scanning the harbor for the tender, a small boat that would return him to his ship.

When life already seems bleak, the Russians send her deeper into Siberia.

Aircraft mechanic Katya Morozov longs for her beloved Mikhail, a Russian naval officer, to return from war. But when an unwanted work assignment takes her far from her home into remote Siberia, Katya faces threats—perhaps because she and her father were engaged in covert protection for persecuted Christians.

A chance encounter with charming test pilot, Yuri Sokolov, turns into more than a passing acquaintance…igniting the flames of a conflict between Katya’s faithfulness to Mikhail and her growing attraction to the enigmatic pilot. Will messages from a mysterious woman in the woods give her the wisdom and strength she needs?

Yuri, who has hidden battles of his own, must likewise make a decision—does he follow his dreams or pursue the lovely mechanic who has captured his heart?

To Love a Falcon, a retelling of the Russian fairy tale “Finist the Falcon,” takes readers into the intrigues of Russian operatives, the stark landscape of Siberian winters, and the courage of those who risk death for faith and love.

USA Today bestselling author Nancy Mehl brings her Ryland & St. Clair series to an explosive close with a pulse-pounding story where the stakes are high and silence is deadly.

Excerpt

“She left her purse behind?” Tony asked.

That was significant. Most women wouldn’t take off without their purse. “Did she have a cell phone?” River asked.

Nathan nodded. “I found it in her apartment, along with her laptop. She would never abandon that either. She used it for all of her cases.”

“Cases?” River asked. “What are you talking about?”

Nathan sighed deeply. “I’m sorry. I should have explained that. I’m so worried I’m not thinking straight. April has a podcast. Hot Coffee and Cold Cases. She investigates cases that the police have given up on.”

River looked at Tony, who was obviously surprised.

“That fact is rather important,” Tony said, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“I know. Again, I’m sorry,” Nathan said. “To be honest, I’d almost given up on ever seeing her again. But then the note came. The idea that she’s still alive . . .” His eyes filled with tears.

“It’s okay,” River said, attempting to comfort the distraught young man. She was trying to digest this new information. Was April missing because of one of her cold cases? Did she get too close to the truth? Had someone kidnapped her . . . or worse . . . decided to shut her up?

Suddenly, this missing-person case had turned interesting—and potentially very dangerous.

Innocent lives at stake…

Can a former soldier and his canine save them?

Helping a pregnant woman he comes across in a mountain storm puts Axel Sterling right into the path of ruthless human traffickers. Now it’s up to the ex-soldier and his dog to keep Summer and her unborn baby safe from the abductors she’s finally escaped. But between the icy wilderness and the armed gunmen following them at every turn, one wrong move could cost Axel and Summer their lives.

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.

Excerpt

Gunfire. The sound Axel hoped never to hear again had him grabbing Summer and pushing her toward the truck. Men with the flashlights were shooting at them!

“Get down low,” he warned. “Hurry.” He ushered her inside the cab before jumping in beside her. Camo, who had ducked at the sound of the gunshots, immediately on alert by this new person.

“It’s okay, Camo. She’s a friend.” He scooted the dog over and glanced at the woman he wasn’t anywhere close to being convinced was a friend.

Who knew what she’d gotten involved in that had intruded into his peaceful existence. The soldier in him wouldn’t let him leave her to those wolves.

He sped away under heavy fire. Several shots came far too close. Axel swerved around a curve and glanced in his rearview mirror thinking they’d escaped the armed men who were on foot, yet multiple sets of headlights assured him they had vehicles waiting near the road.

Keeping Summer alive had now become his only priority.
