Genre: military romantic suspense / women’s fiction

Can you really trust God when life plummets out of your control?

While clearing out her mother’s estate, Dani Robicheau Kirkland makes a shocking discovery: a box containing pieces of her parents’ life hidden away after her father was declared Killed in Action in the Vietnam War. Inside she finds her mother had once clung to faith and the desperate certainty her husband was alive before she spiraled into the devastated alcoholic Dani has known.

Dani’s F-15 pilot husband, Chris, chafes under his father’s expectations to live up to his granddad’s legacy as WWII pilot. While the Bosnian War rages, Chris is tasked with a clandestine mission: flying an unsanctioned diplomat into Bosnia. But when his plane goes down due to a bird strike, Chris is trapped behind enemy lines with little hope of rescue.

Dani is terrified she’ll nosedive like her mother did, but still clings to hope and a certainty that Chris remains alive despite the Air Force’s doubts. As she searches for a way to bring Chris home and he strives to stay alive, they each battle their family histories desperate to find God’s future for them both.

Family ties ensnare them. Can God loose their grip forever?

Excerpt

Danielle Robicheau Kirkland spewed a huff, hoping to loosen her sweat-lodged bangs from her forehead. Swampy Louisiana humidity saturated Mama’s attic, thickening air already soaked with memories. Though the ladder access remained open, it offered no escape from either the heat or her duty.

She rubbed her cheek against her shoulder, hoping to soothe the abrasive tingle from the mounds of pink insulation, an irritating result from a prior swipe with her fiberglass-covered gloves. But the prickling itch continued. Sighing, she surrendered her battle and stared at the stacks of boxes near the attic entrance.

Christmas decorations, high school memorabilia, and childhood clothes. Nothing of earth-shattering importance, not that she’d expected it to be. Mama was neither a hoarder nor a collector. Any things of value had long been sold to finance her drinking.

Dani smothered the flare of anger. The woman was dead. Yet here Dani was, still responsible for her. Once she finished cleaning out Mama’s house, though, she’d be free.

The Final Word JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for The Final Word by Laura Thomas, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

The Final Word

Title: The Final Word
Series: Bite of Betrayal #2
Author: Laura Thomas
Publisher: Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date: June 5, 2025
Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

When aspiring author Sophie Brooks chooses to trade a vibrant Paris life for the tranquility of a quaint English village, she imagines her final days in the City of Lights will be magical. Sophie doesn’t anticipate a chilling encounter with an old flame—nor does she plan to find a new love on her very last night.

Miles Morgan’s life has been defined as a successful opera singer-until now. His chance encounter with Sophie in Paris ignites renewed hope … if he can figure out his next chapter and if she can accept what his future may hold.

In the heart of the English countryside, Sophie and Miles’ fairy tale romance turns into a noxious nightmare as the darkness of Sophie’s past—and her volatile ex—catch up with her. Both Sophie and Miles must surrender everything to the One they thought had betrayed them as they lean into love and fight for their lives.

Excerpt

Satisfied she was alone, Sophie gathered the two large cake boxes in her arms, thankful a cupcake tower was already here from a previous event and she didn’t have to balance that, too. Careful to keep the boxes horizontal, she managed to lock the car door and made her way over to the elevator, the familiar sound of squealing tires protesting as they circled within the parkade floors below.

Miles. She forgot to check and see if he’d left a message. Better make sure his message wasn’t anything to do with her drop-off before she arrived down at reception. Facing the elevator and leaning her knee against the wall, she balanced the boxes with one arm around them both and snagged the phone from her jeans pocket.

Heavy footsteps sounded and before she had a chance to turn around, someone pressed her up against the wall, her boxes and phone flying in every direction. Sophie’s breath caught in her throat as her cheek grazed the brick wall and she struggled to stand upright. A hand snapped her head back and gripped her mouth from behind, a pinprick jabbed her neck like a bee sting, and her knees buckled.

Help. He-lp. Her mouth moved but no words came out. Her limbs grew heavier by the second until she sensed strong arms lifting her from her feet and carrying her away. She couldn’t hold her eyelids open, and all sounds blurred into the muffle of a car engine.

Darkness took over and Sophie sank into its depths.

Top 10 Tuesday — Summer TBR

17 Jun

Happy Tuesday! Is it hot where you are? It is here in the sunny South, so that means it is officially Summer! of course, it is often hot here in the Spring and Autumn as well, but Summer is a special kind of hot. Some refer to it as Satan’s front porch. 😉 And let’s not even talk about the humidity! But the AC and ceiling fans that are obligatory here keep our reading environment cool and dry, so don’t feel too bad for us. Today bloggers are listing their Summer TBRs. I have a few projects that are keeping my pleasure reading at a minimum, but I do have a few books that will be well deserved breaks. I’ve only listed a few, but they are highly anticipated.

What are you reading this Summer?

Mini-Book Review — Under The Magnolias

16 Jun

Lots of people have recommended T. I. Lowe‘s books to me. I read Indigo Isle for book club last January, and it was excellent! All of my group loved it. So, it was a no-brainer to pick up Under The Magnolias. My goodness what a great read! This coming-of-age novel set in the 1980s is filled with heart and heartbreak, love and longing, and a faith message that was subtle yet strong. The story follows Austen Foster and her family through her growing up years on a tobacco farm in South Carolina. From the beginning, Austen is faced with almost impossible expectations placed on her by family obligations. A father with mental health issues, newborn twins in need of care, and the younger siblings to shelter and encourage take up a lot of Austen’s time and energy. The secondary characters that enter the Foster’s lives are wonderful in their quirky and broken selves as well. The story really is about how God takes the broken and makes it beautiful in His own time — emphasis on His timing. I laughed and cried during this book, but the HEA (healing ever after last chapter) was a testament to faith, perseverance, and the wisdom of leaning on the people of God. I cannot recommend this novel enough!

Highly recommended.

Audience: Adults.

(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

This night not only marked the end to the drought, but also the end to the long-held secret we’d kept hidden under the magnolias.

Magnolia, South Carolina, 1980
Austin Foster is barely a teenager when her mama dies giving birth to twins, leaving her to pick up the pieces while holding her six siblings together and doing her best to stop her daddy from retreating into his personal darkness.

Scratching out a living on the family’s tobacco farm is as tough as it gets. When a few random acts of kindness help to ease the Fosters’ hardships, Austin finds herself relying upon some of Magnolia’s most colorful citizens for friendship and more. But it’s next to impossible to hide the truth about the goings-on at Nolia Farms, and Austin’s desperate attempts to save face all but break her.

Just when it seems she might have something more waiting for her―with the son of a wealthy local family who she’s crushed on for years―her father makes a choice that will crack wide-open the family’s secrets and lead to a public reckoning. There are consequences for loving a boy like Vance Cumberland, but there is also freedom in the truth.

Weaving together themes of hope, grief, mental health, and faith into a beautiful and moving novel, Under the Magnolias, T. I. Lowe’s gritty yet tender and uplifting coming-of-age tale reminds us that a great story can break your heart . . . then heal it in the best possible way.

T. I. Lowe is an ordinary country girl who loves to tell extraordinary stories. She is the author of 21 novels, including the #1 international bestseller and critically acclaimed Under the Magnolias and her debut breakout Lulu’s Café. Her novel Indigo Isle won the prestigious Christy Award in the contemporary romance category and was subsequently named Christy Award Book of the Year. She lives in coastal South Carolina with her husband and family.

First Line Friday — Guilty Until Innocent

13 Jun

Guilty Until Innocent by Robert Whitlow is my book club’s June selection. I loved this legal drama/suspense and read it in record time. The case is interesting, the suspense keeps the pages turning, and the faith message is thought-provoking and heart-touching. I can’t wait to discuss it!

Here’s the first line:

The air-conditioning in the Blanton County Courthouse was fighting a losing battle against the oppressive July heat of the eastern North Carolina summer.

Justice has been served . . . unless the accused is innocent. In this gripping legal drama, Whitlow expertly weaves themes of grace, faith, and the law with a plot that is sure to keep you guessing until the end.

Life in prison is often a nightmare, but Joe Moore believes he is just where God intends him to be. Twenty-five years ago, while high on meth, he makes one terrible mistake after another, culminating in the brutal murder of a young, influential couple. Today, Joe is a radically different person, thriving in his role as a ministry leader and role model to his fellow inmates.

After being fired from two previous law firms, young lawyer Ryan Clark and his wife, Paige, have settled into a small North Carolina town. Hired by a distant relative, Ryan is committed to connecting with the right clients and handling the mundane tasks while his cousin Tom takes on the high-profile cases.

But when critical health issues land Tom in the hospital, Ryan is forced to take the helm at the law firm–just in time for the town’s biggest case in history to be reopened. Joe Moore’s niece has been doing some digging and, convinced that her incarcerated uncle is innocent, insists that Ryan relaunch the investigation immediately.

After Ryan meets with Joe, both men receive threats that put their own lives–as well as the lives of those around them–in danger. It appears that together they’ve pulled back a dark curtain that hides a deeper evil than anyone in town suspects exists. Now they must determine if continuing with the case is worth the risk–and if the cost of proving one man’s innocence is too great when the lives of so many others would be placed in mortal danger.

Dive into a world where faith meets the law in this heart-pounding legal drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Pick up Guilty Until Innocent and find out if the cost of justice is worth risking everything. You won’t want miss out on this thrilling story of grace, redemption, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

Robert Whitlow grew up in north Georgia. He graduated magna cum laude from Furman University with a BA in history in 1976 and received his JD with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1979. A practicing attorney, he is a partner in a Charlotte, NC law firm. He and his wife Kathy have four children and nine grandchildren.

Robert began writing in 1996. His novels are set in the South and include both legal suspense and interesting characterization. It is his desire to write stories that reveal some of the ways God interacts with people in realistic scenarios.

Mini-Book Review — The Summer Guests

12 Jun

In my quest to read books in anticipation of a trip to Maine, I read books set in . . . Maine. 😉 My husband and I really enjoyed The Summer Guests, the second book in Tess Gerritsen‘s Martini Club series. This mystery features retired CIA agents happily living out their golden years in small town Maine. But true to form, they can’t help getting involved in local police investigations. Their roles were not as large in this second book, but their knowledge, intuition, and nosiness played a big part in discovering whodunit. Long held secrets, decades old scandals, and a modern day abduction are the focus of the story. The book kept my husband and I guessing as we listened to the audiobook on a weekend road trip. There are a lot of suspects and a lot of motives to sort through. The characters are great and are a big plus in the enjoyment of the book. Young acting police chief Jo is coming into her own, and I loved how the seasoned seniors encourage and support her. This is not a cozy mystery, though. There is plenty of nefarious goings on and dark elements. And while there is adult language, this book is a recommended read. I can’t wait to read what these characters are up to in book 3, The Shadow Friends. If only I didn’t have to wait until November 2026!

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

From New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen comes a chilling follow-up to The Spy Coast, plunging the Martini Club into the search for a missing teen—with a startling connection to their own pasts.

When former spy Maggie Bird retired to the seaside hamlet of Purity, Maine, she settled in for a quiet life with breathtaking views. But enemies from her past soon threatened to destroy everything.

Maggie survived, thanks to her wits and the collective intelligence of the Martini Club, the circle of ex-CIA friends in her cocktail-sipping book club. Their handiwork, however, caught the attention of young police chief Jo Thibodeau. Now Jo and her neighborhood ex-spies have an uneasy alliance.

After a teenager vanishes—and Maggie’s neighbor becomes the prime suspect—she joins the investigation, determined to prove her friend’s innocence. But the girl’s wealthy family pushes for an arrest. And when authorities discover a long-dead corpse in a nearby pond, the case becomes doubly complicated, with unthinkable ties to long-buried secrets.

As Jo grapples with two unexplained mysteries, the Martini Club races to uncover the truth behind shadowy secrets…before more lives are lost.

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. In 1987, her first novel was published. Call After Midnight, a romantic thriller, was followed by eight more romantic suspense novels. She also wrote a screenplay, “Adrift”, which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.

Tess’s first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her suspense novels since then have been: Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), Gravity (1999), The Surgeon (2001), The Apprentice (2002), The Sinner (2003), Body Double (2004), Vanish (2005), The Mephisto Club (2006), and The Bone Garden (2007). Her books have been translated into 31 languages, and more than 15 million copies have been sold around the world.

As well as being a New York Times bestselling author, she has also been a #1 bestseller in both Germany and the UK. She has won both the Nero Wolfe Award (for Vanish) and the Rita Award (for The Surgeon.) Critics around the world have praised her novels as “Pulse-pounding fun” (Philadelphia Inquirer), “Scary and brilliant” (Toronto Globe and Mail), and “Polished, riveting prose” (Chicago Tribune). Publisher Weekly has dubbed her the “medical suspense queen”.

Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.

Excerpt

A buzzing sounded in the distance, and Ari swiveled toward the noise. A speed boat sliced across the surface of the lake.

Toward the island.

Toward them.

As it neared, Ari made out the figures of two people, burrowed in heavy winter jackets and stocking caps. The passenger held something against their shoulder. A rifle.

A sharp crack echoed off the mountains.

“Get down,” Ari shouted and covered her head. She dropped to the ground, slamming her knees into the solid stone surface, wincing against the pain that shot through the bones.

Two more rounds rang out, then the hum of the motorboat faded, and silence prevailed once again.

Ari moved her arms and raised her head, but the shooters had disappeared. She twisted her neck to evaluate Nick’s condition, finding him prostrate beside her, arms over his head.

She rose to her knees and called his name. When he didn’t respond, her hand found his shoulder. Blood seeped from a gash just above his right ear.

Oh, dear God. He’s been shot!

About The Book

A Slight Change of Plans

Title: A Slight Change of Plans
Series: Best-Laid Plans #2
Author: Denise M. Colby
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Release Date: May 27, 2025
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

She believes she doesn’t matter.

Jenny Millard’s hopes for security and stability as a schoolmarm out west are dashed when her schoolhouse closes, and no positions are available nearby. With only enough money for a one-way train fare, Jenny heads to her friend’s home uncertain of her next step.

His scars have made him an unlovable outcast.

Newcomer Ren Lyman prefers to keep to himself, hiding in the back of the blacksmith shop to avoid the stares at the scars left by a childhood accident. When he comes across a lost stranger, he’s surprised when she doesn’t recoil at his appearance, and even more so at his eagerness to assist her.

As Jenny settles into the welcoming, but small, town of Washton, she can’t help but come across Ren, especially since his daily constitutional takes him along the same path. It doesn’t take long for them to form a connection that breaks down the walls erected by years of hurt. But when strange occurrences unsettle the townspeople, it seems their chance at happiness might be at risk.

Will Jenny and Ren discover that they’re enough—for God, and each other?

Excerpt

The suitcase bumped against Ren’s leg as he headed back the way he came. He should’ve said goodbye but couldn’t get the words out. For that was what it had to be. Goodbye. He cringed as he replayed the interaction with the teacher. He was unprepared

for a woman to reach out a hand to shake like a man. Reacted too slowly.

And then Miss Millard noticed his deformity.

He squeezed his hand closed and let the residual pain from the tightness in the skin numb the other emotions flowing through him. Her hesitation over him handling her belongings punched him in the gut. There was no chance of continuing a friendship now. Although her words at the end confused him.

A true knight of service.

Why would she say that if she was horrified by his hand?
