Danielle Robicheau Kirkland spewed a huff, hoping to loosen her sweat-lodged bangs from her forehead. Swampy Louisiana humidity saturated Mama’s attic, thickening air already soaked with memories. Though the ladder access remained open, it offered no escape from either the heat or her duty. 

She rubbed her cheek against her shoulder, hoping to soothe the abrasive tingle from the mounds of pink insulation, an irritating result from a prior swipe with her fiberglass-covered gloves. But the prickling itch continued. Sighing, she surrendered her battle and stared at the stacks of boxes near the attic entrance. 

Christmas decorations, high school memorabilia, and childhood clothes. Nothing of earth-shattering importance, not that she’d expected it to be. Mama was neither a hoarder nor a collector. Any things of value had long been sold to finance her drinking. 

Dani smothered the flare of anger. The woman was dead. Yet here Dani was, still responsible for her. Once she finished cleaning out Mama’s house, though, she’d be free.

Felicia Ferguson achieved master’s degrees in Healthcare Administration and Speech-Language Pathology, but has written since childhood and dreamed of authoring books that teach and inspire others. Her passion, however, is writing women’s fiction and romantic suspense with strong female characters who work through their traumas and tragedies using biblical principles and counseling techniques.

Excerpt

Thumping country music pounded the leather and wood grain interior of Maddox “Dax” Carpenter’s King Ranch F250 with tales of love, summer, and broken hearts. Though he mouthed the words, neither the drum’s beat nor the guitar’s whine penetrated the whirl in his brain.

Pop. Arrested. For a robbery and murder forty years ago.

Dax stared almost unseeing through the windshield as a line of traffic sped down I-85 like a summer Saturday at Talladega Speedway. He swiped a hand down his cheek. The dampness made him blink, shattering the comforting bubble of numbness.

The man who had tucked in him bed, said nighttime prayers for protection and sleep, threw footballs for hours, and taught him honor and discipline. That man could be a killer, a thief, and a liar?

Could have been for all of Dax’s life.

At least according to the police’s evidence and this mysterious finger pointer. Dax grabbed the collar of his Titans player t-shirt and tugged it up, wiping his tears. The police were wrong. They had to be. And he would prove it.

Mini-Book Review — The Choices She Made

The Choices She Made by Felicia Ferguson is a novel of difficult choices. A young woman pregnant by her rapist makes several very hard decisions — to not press charges, to go through with the pregnancy, to keep her baby, and to let the young man she loves go. The novel alternates between the past and present, all through main character Madeline’s eyes. Are the sacrifices good or even necessary? Is the choice the best for the situation? It is interesting to see how every choice Madeline makes affects her and others futures’. I liked this book, although I wouldn’t call it an easy read. There are tough issues and tough outcomes. But the truths of God’s power, trustworthiness, and sovereignty shine through. The Choices She Made will certainly make you think — exactly what a book like this should do.

Recommended.
