Verity
Up until the moment I opened the file and saw the contents, I don’t think it had sunk in that someone did try to end my life.
Reese might have said the words, but it wasn’t until I started reading the file before me that this stopped being about losing my memory and about how I’m still alive. Twelve people capable of some of the most hideous crimes imaginable, and they are all possible suspects in the attempt on my life. Why? I have no idea. All I can see is that a low explosive—something called nitrocellulose—was involved, and it was a controlled and slow autocombustion.
The file reads like something out of a murder mystery, with me as the unwitting victim. Everyone is calmly sitting there and chatting while I want to scream at them. My chest feels tight, and I can’t catch my breath. I look desperately at Reese, but he’s too busy eyeballing everyone else to notice me.
The only person looking in my direction is Axel, but when he mouths “Are you okay?” I nod weakly and try to distract myself by focusing on something else.
But what? I can’t remember anything else. I’d placed so much hope on the idea that bringing Reese here would be enough, but so far, I’m no better off than I was in the hospital. My husband might be with me, but I still can’t remember what I did for Hightower or why someone wanted me dead.
The meeting has snapped one memory free, though. I distinctly recall multiple debriefs surrounding jobs we worked alongside agencies, including the DOD, the CIA, and the FBI. That means we don’t just work in private security; we help put bad guys behind bars.
I wipe my sweaty hands on my jeans and swallow hard, hoping and praying that this is all a mistake and Silas is overreacting.
Because if he isn’t, the attempt on my life might just be the beginning.
