How the War Woman Was Born

1c0c22c0-7091-466b-bcaa-2d7f15a15fe8In my latest novel, For Love or Country, the heroine is a tall, strong woman who is eager to prove her loyalty to her country during the American Revolutionary War. At the beginning of the novel, Tyra MacGregor is known as the “War Woman” among the local Indians and serves as a spy against the British army. When Captain Donahue Morgan meets her, he can’t help wondering why the Indians call her War Woman and how she came by the name.

The idea for this story line came from one of my ancestors—a true story—and a real War Woman who was born in the American colonies. My 6th great-grandfather, John Morgan, had a sister named Nancy Ann Morgan. She defied the Tories during the American Revolutionary War and stood six feet tall with flaming red hair.

Nancy Morgan was renowned for her marksmanship with a musket. The neighboring Indians called her “Wahatchee,” meaning “The War Woman”. Their other brother, Solomon Morgan, owned a portion of the land that the University of North Carolina is located. His tombstone is still on the campus grounds.

I used this physical description to create Tyra MacGregor. In For Love or Country, Tyra often feels huge and awkward compared to other women. She hates being taller than other men and is relieved that Hugh is an inch taller than she. As with my ancestor, Tyra is an excellent shot with a rifle and dagger. She can wield a sword as well as her brothers and hit the center target with a bow and arrow.

While I was writing For Love or Country, I enjoyed imagining what my ancestor Nancy Morgan would have been like, and creating Tyra MacGregor gave me that chance. I hope you enjoy Tyra’s and Hugh’s journey in For Love or Country. I used this physical description to create Tyra MacGregor. In For Love or Country, Tyra often feels huge and awkward compared to other women. She doesn’t feel as if she is as pretty as other women.
