Focus on Romantic Suspense!

20 Aug

Happy Romance Month! It is no secret that I love romantic suspense. It is one of my go-to genres to read. If attraction and adrenaline are two must-haves in your reading choices, then check out these books!

5 Romantic Suspense Novels for The End of Summer

Body of Evidence by Irene Hannon

The final book in Hannon’s Triple Threat series was my favorite. But all are good — so read them all!

Cold Pursuit by Nancy Mehl

This is the first book in Mehl’s Ryland and St. Clair 3-book series. There is lots of pulse-pounding action and a slow burn romance. I liked that the relationship between the two main characters developed slowly. It felt very natural.

The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh

This book is billed as a romantic legal drama and is chock full of mysterious goings on. And the two main characters are delightful. They definitely have the frenemy vibe down.

Man of Shadow And Mist by Michelle Griep

If you like history along with your mystery, then check out this book. “Vampires” in Victorian England. Yes, please!

One Wrong Move by Dani Pettrey.

The southwest setting is spectacular. You will also love the teamwork of the two main characters in the first book of the Jeopardy Falls series.

Top 10 Tuesday — Books That Deserve A Re-Read

8 Jul

This week the TTT theme has another throwback vibe — books that deserve a re-read. It is rare that I re-read a book — there are just so many other books vying for attention! Last week I shared my favorites from July 2015, so I thought I would pick those from the whole summer of 2015 that would be great to read again. 10 years is a long time in the reading world, so many of the books would be fresh again. I hope you find one to re-read or read for the first time!

Top 10 Tuesday — Changes

13 May

Happy Tuesday! Today in TTT bloggers are talking about the changes their blogs have undergone since they began. Can you believe I have been blogging for 15 years?! I missed this milestone anniversary last November; I probably need to do something about that. 😉 My blog has changed in a lot of ways, but in basics it has stayed the same.

Changes in My Blogging/Reading

I still review mostly CF and clean fiction. Nowadays I rarely review non-fiction.

I have cut way back on the number of books I review. I started blogging when my kids were at home, I was working part time, and my husband was working full time. Now we are empty nesters, I’m retired, and my husband is semi-retired. More time means less time for the blog.

I am reading less too. It seems weird that having more free time translates to less reading, but in my case it does, since I have more opportunity for other pursuits.

I am reading what I like. In the early years of blogging I took any and all books publishers were willing to send me. Now I am more choosy.

I read almost exclusively on my Kindle. It’s easy and portable. I never thought this would happen, but it also allows me access to more books, especially through NetGalley.

While I have contemplated phasing out my blog, I am still really attached to the book blog community. I love engaging with other readers and reviewers from all over the world. Who knows how long my blog will go on . . .

Because I can’t stand not referencing books in the TTT posts, here are a few books I have read recently. I am still an eclectic reader! I love reading my go-to authors books and discovering new authors.

Top 10 Tuesday — I’ve Got A Preposition for You!

29 Apr

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT prompt is a title with the word ___ in it. I decided to go with not just a single word, but with a word group — prepositions! To make it even more fun, I wanted the titles to start with a preposition. It wasn’t as hard as thought it would be to come up with 10, so I stopped myself at a dozen! The books cover a variety of genres, so there should be something for you to love.

About The Book

Sunrise Reef

Title: Sunrise Reef
Series: Hope Harbor #11
Author: Irene Hannon
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: April 1, 2025
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Sometimes you have to look beneath the surface to find the treasure within

After years of searching, Bren Ryan has found her place in Hope Harbor. Working as a barista suits her to a T, as does the laid-back vibe of her adopted town. Nothing is lacking in her life–except romance. But that’s okay. Men are a complication she doesn’t need.

Buttoned-up CPA Noah Ward isn’t looking for love, either, when he arrives in town on a mission to convince his father to move closer to him. And he certainly doesn’t intend to fall for the quirky, free-spirited woman who’s taken up residence in his father’s guest cottage.

But when Noah finds himself sucked into Bren’s quest to help a struggling teen, might the two of them discover there’s more to each other than meets the eye?

Excerpt

Before he could finish that thought, something wet hit him in the face.

In the next instant, the fires of hell rained down on him, burning his eyes, nose, mouth, and throat.

He dropped his overnight bag as his eyes slammed shut. His seared lungs balked, and he started to hack. Hard. Snot dripped from his nose.

Chest heaving, he fell to his knees as waves of pain crashed over him.

If someone was trying to kill him, they were doing a first-rate job of it.

Splaying the fingers of one hand on the floor, he groped in his pocket for his handkerchief. He had to wipe away whatever was singeing his eyeballs. ASAP.

The instant his fumbling fingers closed over the square of cloth, he yanked it out and tried to swab off whatever toxic substance was wreaking havoc.

Didn’t work.

In fact, his eyes might hurt worse—if that was even possible.

“Help . . . me.” The hoarse, croaked plea came out in a voice that didn’t sound anywhere close to his usual baritone.

No response.

Whoever had done this to him must have a heart of stone.

Or else they’d hightailed it out of here after rendering him defenseless.

What kind of scumbag would attack an innocent man and—

Wait.

Was it possible Dad had started renting the cottage again and hadn’t told him? Had he walked in on paying guests who’d assumed he was an intruder and doused him with pepper spray?

Oh, geez.

This day was going from bad to worse.

My Impressions:

Every spring I look forward to a return visit to one of my favorite bookish places — Hope Harbor, Oregon. Irene Hannon’s long running contemporary romance series (11 books!) is so, so good! I love the peaceful setting with its lavender farm, quaint downtown pocket park, the towering sea stacks, lighthouse, and so much more. See, it has truly become a beautiful destination to at least vicariously visit. And the residents are warm, welcoming, sometimes quirky, and always a joy to meet again and again. In the latest book in the series, Sunrise Reef, the theme is the meaning of home. While Hope Harbor appeals to its visitors and residents for a number of reasons, the true test of a real home is the people that inhabit it with you. The main romantic storyline involves a woman with a troubled childhood who has found peace and place and purpose in Oregon. She clings to the idea that she is meant to stay forever. Bren is attracted to Noah and feels like her friendship with him could develop into a lasting relationship if only they lived in her town. I loved how Hannon brings the two together, allowing them to see that home is not a physical location, but people to love and do life with. The secondary storyline involves a young woman who is desperately trying to bring her brother home as well. While Bren and Noah are the focus of the novel, I really loved that storyline.

Small town vibes, lovely characters, strong and insightful themes, and subtle faith messages are part and parcel of the Hope Harbor series. And Irene Hannon does it all so well. Whether you are a frequent visitor or this is your first time in town, you are in for a real treat!

Recommended.

Audience: Adults.
