Book Review: Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder is the first book in Valerie Burns‘ Baker Street Mystery series. This cozy mystery checked all the boxes for me — fun small town, fun characters, and a super-fun bakery setting. There are recipes involved! This book was a great whodunit that kept me turning the pages. Recommended.

When Maddy Montgomery’s groom is a no-show to their livestream wedding, it’s a disaster that no amount of filtering can fix. But a surprise inheritance offers a chance to regroup and rebrand—as long as Maddy is willing to live in her late, great-aunt Octavia’s house in New Bison, Michigan, for a year, running her bakery and caring for a 250-pound English mastiff named Baby.
 
Maddy doesn’t bake, and her Louboutins aren’t made for walking giant dogs around Lake Michigan, but the locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. With help from her aunt’s loyal friends, aka the Baker Street Irregulars, Maddy feels ready to tackle any challenge, including Octavia’s award-winning cake recipes. That is, until New Bison’s mayor is fatally stabbed, and Maddy’s fingerprints are found on the knife . . .

My Impressions:

I love a cozy mystery! And I am so glad that I have found a new must-read author in the genre. Valerie Burns’ novel, Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder, checked all the boxes for me. I loved the small town setting of New Bison, a town on the shores of Lake Michigan, the colorful characters including influencer main character Maddie and a very drool-y, very huge dog, and a twisty mystery that kept me guessing. And with all the baking going on in the book, I was torn between reading and pulling out my Kitchenaid. 😉 Maddy is a fun character — a social media influencer who is determined to prove that she has a purpose and a plan. Inheriting a bakery from an aunt she barely knew, Maddie is challenged from day one. But with her knowledge of literary sleuthing and clues left from her deceased aunt, she is a formidable, if amatuer, detective. A light and easy read, this book was the perfect choice for a busy holiday season. I smiled and laughed and kept turning the pages as fast as I could. Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder is the first in a series — there are currently two more books available. I look forward to the murder, mayhem, and pastry delights ahead!

First Line Friday — Bookclubbed to Death

Happy Friday! A new year brings new opportunities, and 2024 is bringing a book festival to my hometown! Woohoo! One of the authors attending is V. M. Burns, a writer of cozy mysteries. There are dogs involved 😉 . Today I am sharing the latest book in her Mystery Bookshop series. Bookclubbed to Death looks to be a very fun read!

Here’s the first line (I don’t think the characters is speaking to a candy bar, LOL):

“Snickers, come!” I yelled.

V. M. Burns returns with the latest book in her popular Mystery Bookstore mysteries set in a Michigan bookshop specializing in selling murder mysteries.

When the bookshop she owns becomes a crime scene, mystery writer Samantha Washington discovers there is such a thing as bad publicity.

After the local library in North Harbor, Michigan, is flooded in a storm, Sam offers her bookstore as a new venue for the Mystery Mavens Book Club. Unfortunately, she immediately runs afoul of the club leader, Delia Marshall, a book reviewer who can make or break careers—something Sam can ill afford with her debut historical mystery soon to be published.

But the next morning, Sam opens her shop to find the unpleasant woman dead on the floor, bashed with a heavy—apparently lethal—tome: The Complete Works of Agatha Christie. While Sam is busy writing her latest British historical mystery in which the queen mother is suspected in the murder of a London Times correspondent, a pair of ambitious cops suspect Sam of the real-life crime.

If You Liked . . . Better Watch Out

I loved this month’s book club pick, Better Watch Out by Natalie Walters! It had all the things I could want in a Christmas-y romantic suspense — action and danger, sizzling romance, and all things Christmas. The NYC setting brought back great memories of a trip my husband and I took one December. Plus it added to my bucket list (IYKYK).

Mini-Book Review — Whiskers, Wreaths, and Murder

Head to the Cotswolds this Christmas in Kathy Manos Penn’s cozy mystery, Whiskers, Wreaths, and Murder. The Christmas season is in full swing in the English countryside, despite the recent death of the Earl. His heir, an American with unpopular ideas for the manor house and estate, is killed in a suspicious car accident. Leta, a recent transplant from Atlanta, is on the case with other members of the Little Old Ladies (LOL) Detective Agency. I found this cozy mystery charming. With a wonderful eye to detail and the addition of cute cats and dogs (who Leta can communicate with, and prove to be invaluable to solving the crime), this book was the perfect addition to my Christmas reading. I found the characters entertaining and the mystery intriguing. And it was a quick read, perfect for the busy holidays. This book is the 3rd in the series, but I didn’t feel lost at any time. I look forward to more fun reading with the 10-book Christie and Dickens Mystery series.

Recommended.

Top 10 Tuesday — Fall TBR

Just a couple more days and it’s FALL! Here in the sunny South, the temps are edging down, but the real Fall weather won’t show up for at least a month (sometimes more). But that doesn’t keep me from piling up a bunch of books to read for the season. I have had a ton of “required” reading the past few months, but I am happy that a lot of pleasure reads are in my future. I have more than 10, but I will keep the list to the next 10 books I will be enjoying in the coming weeks. I read across genres, so there should be something for everyone.

Officer Emerson Diaz arrived at Carissa’s apartment complex, wearing a frown. He’d worked on the police force for years with my brother. Officer Diaz ordered Ian, Bess, and me to sit at the kitchen table and wait until he could question us. He also confirmed what we already guessed. Carissa was dead.

I texted Reid. No need to come. The cops are here. Take care of Paul.

After sending the message, I remained in my seat and took pictures of the main living area. The kitchen, eating, and living area comprised the bulk of the apartment. Sliding glass doors led to a balcony with an ocean view. 

There were no signs of a struggle in this area.

If Carissa had asked my advice, I could’ve given her tips for storing her books, comforters, and magazines in an attractive and functional manner. Instead, they were scattered around the apartment with no particular organizational scheme.

Ian ran his hands through his wavy blond hair. “Do you think she killed herself?”

“I don’t know.” I swallowed hard. “It seems like the options are suicide, accidental drowning, or murder.”

His eyes widened. “But the door was chained. That’s got to mean something.”
