Book Review: O Little Town of Bethany

28 Nov

517bw90uerlHolly left her unhappy life behind, hoping for a Christmas miracle . . .

Everything about Holly Truesdale’s existence is, well…forgettable. The only good memory of her childhood is their family Christmas in the quaint town of Bethany. Tired of the high society life, Holly leaves the big city, longing to recover the sense of belonging she felt in the Victorian town. She opens a scrapbooking store, ready to help others preserve the important moments she missed as a child.

Holly is drawn to Liam, the widower who runs the B&B next door, but doesn’t fully trust herself in a new relationship. As Holly and Liam grow closer, Holly becomes concerned for the town matriarch, Miss Bethany. But even as Yuletide celebrations are in full swing, Holly and Liam can’t help but notice that Miss Bethany harbors a secret. One that could change Christmas in Bethany forever . . . .

She has novelized six screenplays and movies, including her newest, Old Fashioned, with writer/director Rik Swartzwelder. Her new titles include two more novelizations with Cheryl McKay, Love’s a Stage and O Little Town of Bethany. Her seven suspense books include Possession, Misery Loves Company, Ghost Writer and Escapement.

She lives in Atlanta with her husband, Chris, who is a photographer, a musician and video editor.

My Impressions:

Are you looking for a heartwarming Christmas book? Then you should definitely check out O Little Town of Bethany by Rene Gutteridge and Cheryl McKay. A quick read (I finished it in one sitting), this one is packed with lots to love. With a small town vibe, lovable characters, and a sweet romance, this Hallmark Movie-worthy novella gets a recommended rating from me.

So what makes this book a winner? First the town of Bethany itself is a place I wish I could visit. Nestled in a valley in north Georgia, the town has Victorian quaintness going for it. Its slightly quirky citizens are people I would love to hang out with. And the two main characters, Holly and Miss Bethany, are definitely women I could cheer for. Add a couple of cute kids and a hunky dad, and you don’t need much more. But . . . there is a bit more in the message of making a family a place to belong.

I loved O Little Town of Bethany! It certainly got me in the Christmas mood.

My Impressions:

I loved Ace Collins’ latest book, The Most Wonderful Time of The Year. Billed as a devotional, I think it is so much more. Filled with heart-warming stories, thought-provoking devotions, interesting facts, and great recipes to fill the stomach and sooth the body, this book is a wonderful way to plunge you right into the Christmas spirit! And though it is especially meaningful for use during the month of December, it’s message and lessons will be remembered long throughout the new year. The story Ace shares about George Handel’s writing of the great oratorio, The Messiah, really struck a chord with me. I am sharing it with my Bible study group, along with a recipe for a very sweet treat — Sugar Cookie Truffles. So if you want to bring a bit of extra meaning into the hubbub of the holidays, you need to get a copy of this book. Or get 2 or 3 — this book makes a fabulous early Christmas present!

Children’s Corner — Christmas Is Coming!

9 Nov

Christmas is just around the corner! Can you believe it? And to help your family get into the Christmas mood, Zonderkidz has two books featuring The Berenstain Bears that are perfect!

61bxlbwtwbl-_sx497_bo1204203200_In the newest Berenstain Bears Living Lights book, The Berenstain Bears and the Christmas Angel, the cubs discover there’s more to angels than wings and flowing white robes!

It is almost Christmas and there is finally snow in Bear Country. Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear are ready for some winter fun! But when they can’t decide what kind of snowbear to build, Honey Bear’s snow angel gives the older cubs a great idea. Soon the cubs have built a Christmas snow angel. Later, as they warm up with some hot cocoa, Mama and Papa give the cubs a little lesson about some very special angels and the work they do for God.

619qtc5am9l-_sx405_bo1204203200_The Berenstain Bears come to life this holiday season with puzzles, activity pages, and more than 50 reusable stickers in The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Fun Sticker and Activity Book.

Featuring Papa, Mama, Brother, Sister, and Honey and the rest of the Bear Country gang, kids are sure to find lots to do helping Honey Bear find the missing piece of the Bear family Nativity scene, doing crosswords and word searches with Brother and Sister, and even helping out at the Christmas Eve service at Chapel in the Woods.

My Impressions:

Whether you are looking for a family read-along book to share about God’s plans and provision or just want a fun-filled activity book to take along on a trip to grandma’s house, you are in luck with these two books. In The Berenstain Bears And The Christmas Angel, the Bear family learns about an important part of the Christmas story (and really an important part of God’s total story) — angels. Children learn of the role the angels played in bringing about God’s plan. The Christmas story is emphasized, but I loved that references to more stories about angels are included in the back of the book. Challenging for elementary readers or a good choice for family together time, this book will become a favorite for your holiday.

The Berentain Bears Christmas Fun Sticker And Activity Book is filled with word searches, coloring pages, crosswords and more! All the activities revolve around Christmas with many pointing to the real reason for the season — Jesus’ birth. This book will keep your kids occupied for hours!

So, treat your kids to an early Christmas present with The Berenstain Bears And The Christmas Angel and The Berenstain Bears Christmas Fun Sticker And Activity Book.

Recommended.

Audience: early elementary school-aged kids and their families.

Audiobook Review: The Christmas Note

7 Jan

51wMzLacNZL._SX350_BO1,204,203,200_Gretchen Daniels has recently moved into a condo with her two children to be closer to her mother, Miriam. As they build a life together in their new community, they notice a mysterious young woman, Melissa McCreary, who lives next door. She has few possessions, little personality, and keeps to herself. One day a local landlord who is looking for Melissa knocks on Gretchen’s door for assistance. Melissa’s mother has died and in the coming weeks the landlord needs Melissa to empty her mother’s apartment. Gretchen reaches out and offers to help Melissa, but the apartment is a gut-wrenching shamble of a home. There is little worth saving except for a few photos and a note that is discovered on the crate beside the bed. It is unfinished, but in the two scribbled lines, Melissa discovers secrets about her family that she never could have imagined. Can two very different women embark on a journey that explores a long-buried need for forgiveness, hope, and redemption?

41mfdog-yrl-_ux250_Donna VanLiere lives in Franklin, TN, with her husband, Troy, their children, Grace, Kate and David, two dogs, two cats, and and a host of geese and ducks that use their pond as a pit stop on their way to prettier waters.

My Impressions:

My last Christmas read spilled into the New Year due to a full house, travel and limited walking time (I listen to audiobooks on my morning walks). But soon after January 1, my house became eerily quiet, there were no more road trips and the rains here in the South ended, all leading to time with The Christmas Note by Donna VanLiere. What a perfect ending to the holiday season!

VanLiere again revisits old friends (that’s how her characters feel) in The Christmas Note. This time two women are brought together by coincidence and grief to forge an unlikely friendship. Is it really coincidence or God snapping His fingers as one characters states? The book focuses on friendship, family, restoration and healing. Topics such as adoption, child neglect, and wounded servicemen are explored giving this novel depth and texture. If your book club is looking for a Christmas book to schedule next December, keep this one in mind. Good writing, well-developed characters and substance in its plotting make for great discussion. Again, VanLiere does a wonderful job of reading her book.

My Christmas reading is done for this season, but I will be sure to check out more by VanLiere come November 2016.

Audiobook Review: The Christmas Promise

24 Dec

5152OFgLoPL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_Seven years ago Gloria endured a family tragedy that almost shook her faith entirely. Each Christmas she places a card in an envelope on her tree, restating a promise she made to her husband before he died. Now, having moved from her small town and all the painful memories it held, she is building a life by caring for people in need. Whether it’s a young mother who can’t pay her electric bill or a family who needs some extra food, Gloria always finds a way.

Miriam is a thorn in Gloria’s side. Miriam is a constantly critical, disapproving neighbor who looks with suspicion at all the good things Gloria does. When a twist of fate makes them roommates instead of neighbors, it’s the ultimate test of patience and faith.

Chaz has a good job as head of security at Wilson’s Department Store, but each night he returns home to an empty apartment. He longs for a wife and family of his own but realizes that the life choices he’s made have alienated him. He befriends a young boy whose mother has fallen on hard times, giving him a chance to have a life he thought impossible.

In The Christmas Promise, the lives of these characters collide and we learn that even as we move ahead, the past is never far behind. And when we are forgiven much, we love much. In this warmly humorous and deeply poignant story, we are reminded that the Christmas Promise is the promise of second chances.

41MFDog-YrL._UX250_Donna VanLiere lives in Franklin, TN, with her husband, Troy, their children, Grace, Kate and David, two dogs, two cats, and and a host of geese and ducks that use their pond as a pit stop on their way to prettier waters.

My Impressions:

The Christmas Promise is the second audiobook by Donna VanLiere that I have enjoyed this Christmas. (I am currently listening to number 3, The Christmas Note.) Full of humor and heart, this book’s message of second chances is front and center, whether it’s a grumpy neighbor or an estranged family member or a mom who has made some bad choices. Familiar characters from this series make an appearance making them feel like old friends. VanLiere reads the book herself, and her voices and inflection are a real treat. I listened to this book on a few daily walks and on two plane flights, and I must admit I had to stifle a few laughs and squint back a few tears. This heartwarming novella is perfect for the busy holiday season when time is short and nerves get a bit frazzled. So make sure to make some time for this touching book.

Audiobook Review: The Christmas Secret

17 Dec

516Pmi+xHBL._SX408_BO1,204,203,200_When a struggling young single mother saves the life of an elderly woman, she sets into motion a series of events that will test her strength, loyalty, and determination, all the while setting her on the path to finding true love. Christine Eisley is the mother of seven-year-old Zach and five-year-old Haley. Her ex-husband provides little, if any, child support and makes life difficult for Christine by using the children as pawns. She works long hours as a waitress to make ends meet, but her job is in jeopardy because she’s often late to work due to the unreliable teenaged sitters she’s forced to use. When Christine saves the life of a woman who works in Wilson’s department store, the owner of Wilson’s wants to find her, to thank her, but Christine has disappeared, losing another job once again. He sets his grandson, Jason, to the task of finding the mysterious “Christy”. Jason, an accountant by trade who has lost his job to downsizing, thinks he is “above” working at Wilson’s. Soon, he discovers that this new task gives him more than he bargains for. The Christmas Secret is a novel for anyone who wants to see how love is a gift that keeps giving back; that hope is a treasure that never runs dry, and that faith is a miracle that is reborn with each new day.

The Christmas Secret is the first book I have read/listened to by Donna VanLiere, but it won’t be the last. In fact, I downloaded another of her Christmas novellas as soon as I finished this one. Filled with humor and heart, this novel points to the need for helping hands — extending them and accepting them. The cast of characters are fun — I want them as my friends (and family) too!  I laughed out loud and I shed a few tears while enjoying this heartwarming story. And as the title suggests there are a number of secrets that are revealed along the way. You’ll have to decide just which one touches your heart the most. There are a few mild curse words in the book, but that did not keep me from giving this one a recommended designation. The author reads this audiobook and that is perfect! All in all The Christmas Secret is a great holiday read.

Children’s Corner: Casey’s Bright Red Christmas

9 Dec

UnknownIt’s Christmas time at Happy Skies Farm! Tillus the worm, Big Red, Sammy and the rest of the team are excited to celebrate the season. But Casey the farmer is busy working: feeding animals, repairing fences and planning for the year ahead. With so much to do, Casey wonders if she’ll have time to prepare for the holidays. That’s when Tillus and the team unite to make this Christmas extra special for their busy friend.

B16Lli+-wHS._UX250_Holly Dufek began writing as an educational curriculum specialist, and eventually branched out as a freelance copywriter. In 2013, Case IH Agriculture approached her to help develop and write a new children’s book series about modern farming. The first book in the Casey & Friends series, A Year on the Farm, was released in 2014 – becoming her first published children’s book. Since then, the Casey & Friends series has expanded to include Big Tractors, Combines, Casey’s Bright Red Christmas, and Planters & Cultivators – with additional titles in the works.

Holly lives in Wisconsin with her husband, three children and canine writing companion, Olive.

My Impressions:

Every day is busy on a farm, including Christmas Eve. Add to the normal chores of taking care of livestock, repairs and planning, Christmas decorating and celebrating make for a busy time. In Casey’s Bright Red Christmas, Happy Skies Farm is almost ready for Christmas, but Casey is feeling under the weather. Her farm machine friends and Tillus her right hand man put together a celebration while Casey rests. If you have a child aged 4-8 who loves trucks and tractors, this book is perfect. Farm life is revealed through colorful illustrations as everyone joins in to surprise Casey. Pair this book with a toy tractor and you have a present sure to please!

Recommended.

Audience: children ages 4 – 8.
