First Line Friday — The Last Super Chef

25 Oct

Happy Friday! Today I am featuring The Last Super Chef by middle grade author Chris Negron. This Georgia award-winning author will be returning for the second year of Turning A New Page Book Festival in Perry, Georgia. If you are looking for a great book for a child aged 8 — 12, then look no further. This one will be a big hit, especially with the young men in your life.

Here’s the first line:

I know the exact amount of flour for the perfect cake batter.

Family and food take center stage in this heartfelt middle grade story perfect for fans of John David Anderson and Antony John.

For as long as he can remember, Curtis Pith has been obsessed with becoming a chef like Lucas Taylor, host of Super Chef. And Curtis has a secret: Taylor is actually his long-absent father.

So when Taylor announces a kids-only season of Super Chef, Curtis finally sees his chance to meet his dad. But after Curtis wins a spot in the competition and arrives in New York to film the show, nothing goes as smoothly as he expected.

It’s all riding on the last challenge. If Curtis cooks his heart out like he knows he can, he just might go home with the top prize—and the truth.

Chris Negron grew up outside Buffalo, New York, where he spent a huge chunk of his childhood collecting comic books and loving sports. But it was the hours of playing Dungeons and Dragons in friends’ basements that first gave him the dream of one day writing his own stories. That dream kept him company through college at Yale University and years of programming computers for big companies. Dan Unmasked is his debut novel, and he now lives outside Atlanta with his wife, Mary. Visit him at http://www.chrisnegron.com.

Happy Release Day — Underdog City

31 Oct

Happy release day to Chris Negron. His latest MG novel, Underdog City, is available today! Chris will be a panelist at Turning A New Page, a book festival set in Perry, Georgia. If you live anywhere near the middle Georgia area, put January 27, 2024 on your calendar.

From the acclaimed author of The Last Super Chef and Dan Unmasked comes a heartfelt standalone novel about community, justice, and redemption, perfect for fans of Take Back the Block and Brave Like That.

Mortimer Bray is not okay.

It seems like everything in his life is changing for the worse. After his own much-loved dog dies, he can’t bring himself to carry on with his dog-walking business; there’s a strange new girl who’s moved into the house next door; and suddenly there’s a buzzing feeling of anxiety in his head and heart when he’s faced with something new.

His neighborhood, Townsend Heights, used to feel like the most comfortable place in the world. But lately, it seems like everyone is arguing, and there’s uncertainty around every corner.

The neighborhood’s only vacant lot is somehow behind it all, Mortimer is sure of that much. If he can unearth the lot’s secret history, he just might stop the Heights from unraveling completely.

Mortimer can’t save Townsend Heights on his own. But when it comes to community, you’re never truly on your own—not as long as you’re willing to learn from the past, in order to do better in the future.
