The Queen's Cook

Title: The Queen’s Cook
Series: Queen Esther’s Court #1
Author: Tessa Afshar
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Release Date: November 19, 2024
Genre: Historical Fiction, Biblical

In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire’s Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence. Roxannah, the daughter of an impoverished Persian lord, is devastated by the news but feels helpless to come to the aid of her Jewish friends. Desperate to support her family, Roxannah approaches the royal physician, Adin–the man whose kind eyes haunt her–and seeks his help to find employment in Queen Esther’s kitchens.

In the opulent palace of Susa, Roxannah tries to survive the spiteful ploys of the other cooks as she ascends through the ranks. Her loyalty earns her the trust and friendship of Queen Esther, who is navigating dangerous politics with wisdom and grace. When Roxannah and Adin uncover a sinister plot against Amestris, the king’s most powerful wife and Esther’s archenemy, they find themselves tasked with the impossible job of discovering the culprit. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the fate of Esther’s reign hangs in the balance.

Excerpt

Roxannah snapped to her feet. She expected him to demand payment before accompanying her, but he simply waved at her to join him. “Head injury, my man tells me. Is he conscious?”

She blinked, surprised at this no-nonsense greeting. “Yes.”

“That’s a good sign.” He had a deep voice that seemed at once commanding and oddly soothing, edged by a slight accent that lent his speech an air of mystery.

Walking briskly, he led her to a plain gate at the opposite end of the courtyard, beyond which lay a wide lane. “It will be faster if we ride. My horse is in the stable around the corner. There is a donkey for you.” He gave her a sidelong glance. “You needn’t worry. It’s a biddable creature.”

“I can ride.”

He walked ahead into a mudbrick stable, whitewashed to match the outside walls. His steps were long and loping, and she found herself half running to keep up. His servant had followed in their wake, his movements so quiet she startled when he appeared at her side to help her mount the donkey. The beast waited placidly as she settled on its broad back.

She caught the servant’s eye and whispered, “What’s his name?”

He shrugged. “We just call him Donkey.”

“Not the beast. I meant the physician.”

The servant’s white teeth flashed against his salt-and-pepper beard. “Well, now. One might say that same name is not badly suited . . .”

The physician held up a warning finger. “Don’t finish that thought, no matter how great the temptation.” Eyes the color of obsidian sparked with humor.

Roxannah looked from one grinning face to the other, marveling at the ease with which the master had allowed his servant’s teasing insult to slide. In her father’s house, any retainer with half the cheek would have been bleeding by now.

Return to the Son JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Return of the Son by D.M. Griffin, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About The Book

Return of the Son

Title: Return of the Son
Series: The Encounter #4
Author: D.M. Griffin
Publisher: Independently published
Release Date: October 10, 2024
Genre: Biblical Fiction

Her life was perfect. At least her childhood was. Eve never wanted anything except her father’s presence. As a prominent advisor to the evil King Herod, Eve’s father was split between his duties to the king and his duties as the only living parent for his daughter. With no heir to claim his family’s land, Eve’s father did what any loving father would do. He arranged for her betrothal. But this wasn’t just any betrothal. Her potential husband was related to the king she despised. With a rough marital journey ahead of her, she tenuously clings to the promises of God.

Not sharing her father’s enthusiasm or respect for the Herodian dynasty, Eve acted like the spoiled child she was upon first meeting her betrothed. With faulty expectations and prejudiced opinions, she did what she would to ruin the marriage before it began. It wasn’t until it was almost too late that Eve’s eyes were open and she saw the opportunity to experience love for the divine intervention that it was.

Fraught with political intrigue and personal challenges, would Eve be able to fully surrender to the life God wanted her to live by loving a man she thought she could never love? When that man’s shadows chase the family into the future, would Eve’s son pay the ultimate price? Or would God intervene there too? Could He? Only a single, unforeseen encounter could answer Eve’s impossible question. Does love truly conquer death?

Excerpt

So the king’s son brought servants with him? That should have come as no surprise. Even Antipas traveled with an entourage. All of Herod’s young sons did. Not that the king would have been the least bit upset if his sons met untimely deaths. Rumors circulated Herod had family members murdered if they became an inconvenience.

Eve clenched her fists, angry at herself for letting her assumptions get away from her again. The judgments were like dark clouds in her soul.

“The thoughts we think determine the steps we take in life, my daughter.” Her father’s words rose to the surface of her mind with the power of rebuke. “Be careful to let the Lord Almighty direct your assumptions or else the enemy’s subtle deception will easily lead you astray. Wisdom is the robe of the Spirit that cloaks us in prayer. Deception is the net of the enemy that lingers hidden like a trap beneath our own private expectations.”

Struggling to regain her composure, Eve clenched her fists and took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. The sound of Antipas’s voice echoed through the room as he kept talking.

“They are servants, Enoch. They will not dine with us.” The arrogance in Antipas’s tone grated. He should show her father more respect. He served Herod for years, after all.

“Of course.” Her father’s sharpened tone drew her admiration.

Enoch was a man who respected individuals based on their image-bearing status in the Lord. Disapproval wasn’t something her father easily engaged in. Once lost, however, it was hard to retrieve his respect. Antipas bordered on losing her father’s respect and earning his disapproval.

About The Book

Brave

Title: Brave: The Story of Ahinoam
Series: King David’s Brides #1
Author: Mesu Andrews
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Release Date: October 1, 2024
Genre: Biblical Fiction

In the tumultuous world of ancient Israel, Ahinoam–a dagger-wielding Kenite woman–flees her family farm with her unconventional father to join the ragtag band of misfits led by the shepherd-turned-warrior David ben Jesse. As King Saul’s treasonous accusations echo through the land, Ahinoam’s conviction that David’s anointing makes him Yahweh’s chosen king propels her on a perilous journey to Moab and back into Judah’s unforgiving wilderness, only to encounter more hardship and betrayal.

Amid the challenges, Ahinoam forges an unexpected bond with David’s sister and gains respect among David’s army through her knowledge of Kenite metalworking. Though some offer friendship, Ahinoam, scarred by past relationships, isolates to avoid more pain and refuses to acknowledge her growing feelings for the renegade king. As Ahinoam’s heart grapples for footing, King Saul’s army closes in, and Ahinoam must confront the true meaning of love, loyalty, and courage. Is she brave enough to trust new friends and love Israel’s next king?

Excerpt

Now that the awful reality of a raid was more than a possibility, I needed clearer direction. “If they come too quickly, am I to stay and protect Old Miriam or run home and protect—”

You.” Eyes remaining forward, he added, “At all costs, I command you to protect yourself.”

Throat clogged with fear and unspoken questions, I said no more until we reached the first row of trees. Abba handed me a climbing rope and kept a second one for himself. With a steadying sigh, he slung the hemp rope around the tree, fastened both ends to his leather belt, and slid the belt beneath his backside. He placed a sandaled foot on the tree trunk and turned to me with a glint in his eye. “Ready to climb?”

Danger forgotten, I mirrored his position. Muscles taut, I grinned at the man who was my whole world. “Are you ready to be humbled by a woman?”

He threw his head back and laughed. The deep, resonant boom burst out of him with joyful abandon and sent birds to flight. This was the abba who had raised me, the abba who shrieked with joy when I threw a dagger and hit the target’s center. This was the abba who chose to raise a daughter rather than marry again. And his daughter would forever honor the many sacrifices he’d made.

His laughter suddenly ceased. I turned and saw his countenance fall, his eyes widen. Before a question formed on my lips, the ground beneath me trembled—and I knew before any shofar sounded.

Top 10 Tuesday — Redeemed!

17 Sep

Happy Tuesday! Nothing says Christian fiction like a redemption story. That is certainly what God’s business looks like, and CF authors work hard to make that plain. While the message may be overt or subtle, redemption — freedom that is found through Christ — is powerful. I’ve included Biblical fiction and general fiction in my list, proving that redemption has been offered by God throughout time. I hope you find a story to love.

First Line Friday — The Nameless Ones

24 May

Happy Friday! It’s been a while since I taught a Faith And Fiction Bible Study at my church. Basically, we study scripture for 4-6 weeks and then have a book club using a novel that is inspired by the scripture we have been diving into. When I saw The Nameless Ones, a 3-story collection by Mesu Andrews, I thought it would be perfect for such a class. Check out the info below about the book.

Now here’s the first line of story #1, The 700th Wife:

I waited patiently for my royal groom in his opulent chamber, feasting on the surroundings.

Mesu Andrews has made her niche in biblical storytelling by developing characters in the Bible who are oftentimes obscure, almost forgotten, or perhaps unnamed. The Nameless Ones carries on the tradition by introducing us, in short story form, to fictional, yet believable characters who intersect with such famous Biblical people/incidents as: King Solomon’s writing of Ecclesiastes, Elijah battling the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel, and the Assyrian siege on Jerusalem during King Hezekiah’s reign.

Why weren’t 699 wives enough for King Solomon? Did God have some great purpose for The 700th Wife? Could she make an impact on this wise, handsome, and aging king? In this story, you’ll discover the legacy of wisdom, love, and comfort her words may have been to the one called Jedidiah—beloved of the Lord.

Someone had to bring the water to douse Elijah’s sacrifice…why not The Water Girl who serves in the pagan temple of Baal? The three year drought has developed more than her thirst for water. When Yahweh shows His power, will she continue to waver between two opinions or will she find truth, freedom, and life in Him?

He is Judah’s Mole—a digger—and like all moles he’s most comfortable in the dark, away from people. As the Assyrian king, Sennacherib, marches on Jerusalem, only the Mole can save them by tunneling through a mountain to connect a spring outside the city’s wall to an internal cistern. But who will deliver the Mole from his own insecurities—perhaps The Mole’s Wife? Discover how her gift of faith matches her husband’s skill with a shovel, and together they save not only her husband’s dignity but also Hezekiah’s kingdom.

Mesu grew up with a variegated Christian heritage. With grandparents from the Pilgrim Holiness, Nazarene, and Wesleyan Churches, her dad was a Quaker and mom charismatic. As you might imagine, God was a central figure in most family discussions, but theology was a battlefield and Scripture the weapon. As a rebellious teenager, Mesu rejected God and His Word, but discovered Jesus as a life-transforming Savior through the changed life of an old friend.

The desire for God’s Word exploded with her new commitment, but devotional time was scarce due to the demands of a young wife and mother. So Mesu scoured the only two theology books available–children’s Bible stories and her Bible. The stories she read to her daughters at night pointed her to the Bible passages she studied all day. She became an avid student of God’s Word, searching historical and cultural settings as well as ancient texts and original languages.

Mesu and her husband Roy have raised those two daughters and now enjoy a tribe of grandkids, who get to hear those same Bible stories. Mesu’s love for God’s Word has never waned. She now writes biblical novels, rich with spiritual insight learned through fascinating discoveries in deep historical research.

Top 10 Tuesday — More Randomness

30 Apr

Happy Tuesday! Today’s TTT topic is petty reasons to DNF a book (did not finish). I am more apt to have petty excuses to DNS a book (did not start 🙂 ), so I am going off topic yet again and pulling random books from my shelves that still need to be read. If you have suggestions on which for me to read, please, please speak up! LOL!

Top 10 Tuesday — Unread TBR

23 Apr

This week’s TTT topic opens huge cans of worms for me. I have so many unread books in physical form, ebook form, audiobook form, and ARCs on NetGalley. I am drowning in unread books. And I am completely unapologetic! There may come a day when I will have all the time in the world to read. That’s when the TBR will be whittled down. In the meantime, I accumulate books willy-nilly. 😉 This week I am listing the last 10 books added to my NetGalley shelf. At least I know they haven’t been languishing too long. I hope you find one to pique your interest.
