Book Review: Daughter of Eden

13 Feb

Daughter of Eden, the latest Biblical fiction by Jill Eileen Smith, releases tomorrow. I snagged an early copy, and devoured it! The what-if are fascinating. With Eve, I felt the loss and grief of sin’s advent into the world, along with the estrangement from God. If you have ever wondered what life in the garden might have been like or what it must have been like to be the first to do anything, then this book is for you. Well-researched and thought-out, Daughter of Eden is a recommended read.

The first time she opens her eyes, Eve gazes on One whose beauty nearly blinds her, whose breath is in her lungs. Her Creator takes her hand and gives her to one like her and yet different. Together, she and Adam experience pure joy as they explore Eden. But her favorite moments are when the Creator comes to walk with them, day after day.

Until everything changes. With one act of disobedience, Eve finds that her world is no longer a friendly place. With remorse in her heart, she must face the unknown future–the births, the deaths, the sacrifices, the loss of the one home she has ever known. Perhaps worst of all is the loss of trust, not only with her Creator but with the man who shares her life. How will they ever survive out of Eden?

Bestselling biblical fiction author Jill Eileen Smith imagines the life of the first woman to ever live, unspooling a story of love, loss, and the promise of redemption.

Jill Eileen Smith is the bestselling, award-winning author of the Wives of King David series, Wives of the Patriarchs, Daughters of the Promised Land, The Heart of a King, Star of Persia, Miriam’s Song, and the nonfiction When Life Doesn’t Match Your Dreams, and She Walked Before Us. Her research has taken her from the Bible to Israel, and she particularly enjoys learning how women lived in Old Testament times.

When she isn’t writing, she loves to spend time with her family and friends, read stories that take her away, ride her bike to the park, snag date nights with her hubby, try out new restaurants, or play with her lovable, ā€œhelpfulā€ cat Tiger. Jill lives with her family in southeast Michigan.

My Impressions:

Created to be the perfect partner for her husband, Eve’s life in the garden was idyllic . . . until her choices allowed sin to enter the world and change everything. Daughter of Eden by Jill Eileen Smith explores all the what-ifs of the first man and woman. Faithful to the scriptural record, Smith fictionalizes the account to perhaps ask more questions than she seeks to answer. I loved how she portrayed Adam and Eve in all their innocence — an innocent and pure, and yet intimate relationship between each other and the special bond they had with their Creator — before all was shattered. The book explores what might have taken place following their expulsion from Eden — the need to find shelter and food, the need to make useful items for their household, and the beginnings of a family. One thing this novel stresses is that though estranged from God by their sin, He never truly leaves them alone. They are His despite their disobedience, pride, and willfulness. A good reminder for modern day readers too. Regret over her decision to disobey God stalks Eve, especially when her children repeat her mistakes in a variety of ways. Adam and Eve lived a long time, so the story doesn’t end with the birth of Seth, but with the ways the world was shaped by their descendants. Cities are built, traditions are established, and sin lives on. But hope is never too far away, as Eve looked for the one who would redeem her mistakes. This work of Biblical fiction made me think, made me consult scripture, and made me examine the consequences of my own actions.

With what must have been an enormous undertaking, Smith brings forth a very plausible storyline that’s a pleasure to read, not a dry philosophical tome. I very much liked Daughter of Eden. As a leader of a combo Bible study/Book Club, I would not hesitate to use this novel as a companion to a study of Genesis. If you are a fan of Biblical fiction too, give this one a look.

Book Review: Cold Light of Day

11 Feb

Adventure, suspense, and romance — what more could you want in a novel? How about a stunning Alaska setting and the promise of more great books on the way? You get all of that in Elizabeth Goddard‘s first book in the Missing in Alaska series, Cold Light of Day. With its grab-you-from-the-beginning to its nonstop-action, if you are a romantic suspense fan, you will love this book! Recommended.

Police Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and even an attack on her own father. Despite her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.

Grier is in Alaska for the same reason so many others are–to disappear–when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed, all will be lost. And he’s not sure even Autumn could save him.

As the stakes rise and the dangers increase, Autumn and Grier must rely on each other to extinguish the deadly threats.

My Impressions:

I love a romantic suspense from Elizabeth Goddard. The books I have read are always set amidst stunning natural beauty. In Cold Light of Day, the reader is transported to the panhandle of Alaska, home to deep fjords, a rain forest, and the wildness that is only found there. I visited Alaska almost 4 years ago, and this novel brought back all the images and memories of my trip. Of course, I didn’t encounter anything like main characters Grier and Autumn did. LOL. Autumn is the chief of police of small town Shadow Gap, a normally quiet place. Although many come there to escape or disappear, danger doesn’t usually follow them. Not the case in this book. The action starts from the very beginning and doesn’t let up. Bullets fly and bodies start to pile up. Added to the challenges facing Autumn is small-town politics that seeks to undermine her position. Luckily she has the very heroic and mysterious Grier to help her. I liked that they worked as unofficial partners — Autumn can certainly hold her own! At first I had no idea what was going on, and neither did the characters. Goddard does a good job of leaving clues along with the many twists. In addition to the action-packed suspense there’s a well-balanced romance. As with all of Goddard’s books, faith has a strong presence, but don’t worry about this book being preachy. The characters’ journeys are natural and unforced. Reconciling one’s past with hope for a future is a strong theme.

Cold Light of Day delivers what fans of romantic suspense want — characters to love and root for, a twisting plot to keep you guessing, and a promise of happily-ever-after (with some bumps along the way šŸ˜‰ ).

It’s also a novel about mother/daughter relationships. You might want to consider doing a buddy read with your mom or daughter. See all the details below.

In 1911, Mabel MacGinnis is Europe’s strongest woman and has performed beside her father in the Manzo Brothers Circus her entire life. Audiobook Mini-Review: Crossfire

6 Feb

I was looking for an engaging audiobook — one that would immediately grab my attention and keep me listening. Crossfire by Lynette Eason, book 2 in the romantic suspense series Extreme Measures, did just that. From the opening I was swept up in the stories of Juliana Jameson and Clay Fox. Juliana is a hostage negotiator with the FBI, and her cases turn into something very personal. The action is non-stop and filled with twists and turns. I liked how the characters and this reader were kept off balance by the bad guys. The book was a puzzler! Themes include guilt, blame, and forgiveness. Some characters find healing; others are swept up in bitterness. While the experiences of the characters are extreme to say the least, the themes speak to the reader’s own views on what can be forgiven and what cannot, including in our own lives. Specific to the audiobook: the narrator’s voices and pace were spot on.

I was pleased with myself for being up-to-date on the Extreme Measures series, but just learned book 4 is in the works. Yay! Another great book to look forward to.

Audience: Adults.

(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

FBI special agent Julianna Jameson is a top-notch negotiator who has never lost a hostage. Surely she can manage to take care of her much younger sister, Dottie, who showed up unannounced to live with Julianna while she finished her senior year of high school.

A former sniper with the 75th Ranger Regiment, Clay Fox left the army after a tragic incident that he can’t get past. Now he’s working as a high school resource officer until he can figure out what to do with the rest of his life.

Their paths cross when Julianna is called in to negotiate a courtroom hostage situation involving Clay’s sister. Impressed and a bit intimidated by the calm, capable woman with the dark hair and blue eyes, Clay invites her to speak at his school. Dottie’s school.

But as the anniversary of a school shooting from Julianna’s past approaches, it becomes clear that her perfect record is about to be tested and that Dottie is at risk. If Julianna and Clay can’t figure out who’s behind the attacks, more innocent people will die–and Dottie is next in line.

This intense story of revenge and redemption from bestselling author and master of suspense Lynette Eason will have you up all night as you race toward the explosive finish.

Award-winning, best-selling author, Lynette Eason writes for Harlequin’s Love Inspired Suspense line and for Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. Her books have hit the Publisher’s Weekly, CBA and ECPA bestseller lists and have won numerous awards such as the prestigious Carol Award, the Selah, the Daphne, the IRCC award and more. Lynette is married, has two children, and lives in Greenville, SC.

EXCERPT

Eighteen months, and the police in Last Chance County still hated her.

ā€œCome on. Let’s get this done.ā€ Donaldson motioned her to a seat, unaware of his brash tone.

She settled into the hard plastic chair on the short side of the desk. The edge had a metal ring fixed to it for securing handcuffs. Great. She’d been given the criminal’s chair.

Go figure. How about they have a little trust?

Donaldson lifted his brows.

Pepper said, ā€œAren’t you going to ask me a question?ā€

Thankfully, no one else was around to see this. It was seven thirty in the morning, which was why she’d chosen this time. The police department wasn’t exactly on her way to work.

ā€œI figured you knew how this worked.ā€ Donaldson slid over a legal pad. ā€œBut okay, what did you want to report?ā€

Pepper held herself very still. ā€œI came here because I need help, not to be browbeaten.ā€

ā€œI apologize.ā€ He didn’t look apologetic. He looked like he wanted to get this over with as soon as he could.

That was what her actions had accomplished.

She’d turned a perfectly nice family man and good cop into a guy with an attitude who wanted her out of here as fast as possible.

February Book Club Selection — The Brilliance of Stars

1 Feb

I am so looking forward to reading The Brilliance of Stars by J’nell Ciesielski. An historical novel with lots of intrigue and suspense plus romance? My book club is going to love it! Have you read it? We would love to know your thoughts.

Amid the chaos of the Great War, two elite assassins learn precisely how dangerous it is to have something—or someone—worth losing.

Washington, DC, 1914. Ivy Olwen knows how to survive on the streets without two coins to rub together. Then destiny thrusts her into the nest of a covert agency of assassins sworn to drive back the world’s darkness, and she acquires a new set of lethal skills. Her education—from explosives to etiquette, sharpshooting to sabotage—is as far reaching as the organization’s missions. But it’s the hours she spends among the towering bookshelves in the library and stargazing on the roof with Agent Jack Vale that make her heart fly.

Jack knew plenty of hardship before the agency refined his rough edges, transforming him into the man who never misses. But he didn’t know the feeling of home until Ivy entered his world. Now Jack’s heart drums with a singular purpose: he will fight for her, fight alongside her. No matter the cost.

When the pair is sent on a seemingly simple mission to take down Russia’s newest and most dangerous arms dealer—a soulless man using the Great War as an opportunity to further his own depraved agenda—they discover that no amount of training could have prepared them for a manhunt that takes them across the frozen tundra, to the Crimean Peninsula, and along the Trans-Siberian Railway . . . only to discover that there is evil in the world they will never understand.

The first book of an epic duology from bestselling author J’nell Ciesielski,Ā The Brilliance of StarsĀ incorporates her signature blend of thrilling adventure, glamorous espionage, and sweeping romance.

Bestselling author and with a passion for heart-stopping adventure and sweeping love stories, J’nell Ciesielski weaves fresh takes into romances of times gone by. When not creating dashing heroes and daring heroines, she can be found dreaming of Scotland, indulging in chocolate of any kind, or watching old black and white movies. She is a Florida native who now lives in Virginia with her husband, daughter, and lazy beagle. Learn more at http://www.jnellciesielski.com.
