Teens and Their Supernatural Pursuits

By Melody Carlson

Have you even wondered why some teens are drawn toward things like Ouija boards or psychics? Or why séances are still popular at sleepovers? Does it just have to do with Halloween and that spine-chilling need for a good scare? Or could it be something more? And, as a Christian, should you be concerned?

Those questions, as well as some confused reader letters, prompted me to tackle the “supernatural” in one of my teen novels (Moon White, TrueColors, Nav Press). And whenever I write an issues-based novel, I’m forced to research—and often in some dark places. So I began scouring websites, learning more about Wicca and the occult, trying to grasp what was really going on with today’s teens—and how I could write about it in a helpful and relevant way.

But, as usual, when I write a teen book, I go back to my own adolescence…trying to connect with my inner teen…and I suddenly remembered a short era when a friend and I got very interested in witchcraft. I had honestly forgotten about this time and was fascinated to recall how we scoured some witchcraft stores on a local campus—I think we even purchased a few things. Fortunately, this interest was short-lived and I became a Christian not long afterward.

However, as I reconnected with my inner teen, I had to ask myself—why had I looked into witchcraft back then? Why do teens dabble with it now? Suddenly the answer became crystal clear. I was searching. I’d been calling myself an atheist for several years by then, but I was spiritually hungry—starving in fact. Consequently I was looking for spiritual answers—something that would fill that empty void within me. I wanted a supernatural force in my life and I didn’t even care where it came from. I needed something bigger than me, more powerful than me, something to hold onto. I had no idea at the time that I was really searching for God.

This realization changed the way I viewed my research. Instead of feeling disgusted and dismayed by the witchcraft/Wicca sites (which are not particularly enjoyable) I began to recognize that these people (mostly girls) were simply searching too. They wanted a power source in their lives just like I wanted one in mine. They just hadn’t found God yet.

This led to another discovery. A girl who’s attracted to a religion like Wicca is usually seeking to gain some control over her life. Something is wrong and she wants to change it. To do so, she’s often enticed to purchase something—like “magical herbs”—to create a potion that will give her some control over her situation. Unfortunately, she doesn’t even realize she’s being tricked.

But think about it, wouldn’t you love to have control over a bad situation sometimes? Wouldn’t you love to be able to change the circumstances that make your life unpleasant? So what if someone offered you the “power” to do just that? Perhaps if you’re fifteen, you wouldn’t see that person as a charlatan and you would fall for it.

Which brings me to another important factor in understanding this generation’s attraction to the supernatural. Follow the money. The more I researched, the more it became painfully obvious that Wicca and witchcraft and the occult are money-making enterprises. Thanks to the internet, these savvy distributors sell anything imaginable—and many things you can’t. That leads to some serious motivation—these marketers want to hook their unsuspecting young customers and reel them in. Of course, these potions and trinkets and how-to books don’t come with a money back guaranty. Nor are they approved by the FDA. Yet they are a multi-million dollar industry.

So, in a way, it’s a perfect storm. Teens that are insecure, lost, unhappy, and searching…meet up with an unregulated industry that offers supernatural answers and power and control…for a price. And, oh yeah, I never even mentioned how this opens a door for Satan to slip in and wreak havoc. For that…you’ll have to read the book.

Moon White Searching for ways to bring her problems under control, Heather explores the traditions of Wicca. All spirituality is good, right? Heather’s curiosity brings new confidence and reassurance but alienates her from others, including her best friend. Yet this enchanting path seems harmless, and even helpful. Suddenly, terrifying things begin to happen that Heather can’t explain–clearly she has less control over her world than ever before. When she puts herself in unexpected danger, she finds herself at the lowest point of her life. She uncovers an unknown secret about her deceased mother, but also meets a compassionate stranger who leads her on a quest she never could have imagined.

Author, Author! — Kathi Macias

19 Oct

During the ICRS last July in Atlanta, I had the pleasure of talking with Kathi Macias about her books and the writing life.  Here are a few highlights:

By The Book:  What is your writing schedule like?

Kathi Macias:  I am a writer that likes a schedule.  I write at least 5 days a week and am up at 5 in the morning to begin.  I put in an 8 hour day and try to write 5000 words per day.  In addition to writing fiction and non-fiction books I am a contributor to periodicals such as Crosswalk.  (Kathi has a background in journalism.)

BTB:  Tell us what you are working on now.

Kathi:  I have a 3 book series in the works.  (Deliver Me From Evil is now available.)  The series focuses on human trafficking and follows the life of a young woman sold into the sex trade by her own parents at the age of 6.  There is also a parallel story set in Thailand.  Human trafficking is a difficult subject and not usually depicted in Christian fiction.  But my publishers, New Hope, wanted me to pursue the topic.  I also talked to a reporter in southern California who had investigated the activity in an area called The Reeds.  Although not a Christian, he told me to do it.

BTB:  Your previous series for New Hope, the Extreme Devotion series was very powerful.  What was your inspiration?

Kathi:  In Hebrews 13, we are told to remember those in prison, as if we are charged with their care and their release.  I thought about what I would do if I had a family member imprisoned for his belief in Christ.  I met with resistance from publishers that liked the concept, but didn’t think readers would like the books.  I had written non-fiction for New Hope and was approached to write fiction for them as well.  That’s how I got the stories out.  (New Hope is the publishing arm of the WMU.)

BTB:  What have been readers’ reactions?

Kathi:  I have a lot of teenaged fans.  One 17 year old girl said that after reading No Greater Love (book 1 in the Extreme Devotion series) it made her want to live a noble life.

BTB:  What is your Beyond Me foundation?

Kathi:  Beyond Me is an annual award given to someone that is behind the scenes.  Someone who lives beyond themselves. The 2011 award winner is Yvonne Ortega, someone who ministers out of her own pain.

Thanks so much to Kathi for talking with me.  I will be reviewing her newest book, A Christmas Journey Home, on October 26th.

Kathi Macias is a multi-award winning writer who has authored more than 30 books and ghostwritten several others. A former newspaper columnist and string reporter, Kathi has taught creative and business writing in various venues and has been a guest on many radio and television programs. Kathi is a popular speaker at churches, women’s clubs and retreats, and writers’ conferences, and won the 2008 Member of the Year award from AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association). Kathi “Easy Writer” Macias lives in Homeland, CA, with her husband, Al, where the two of them spend their free time buzzing around in their new ride: Al’s 2005 sunburst orange Corvette. Here latest releases are Deliver Me From Evil and  A Christmas Journey Home.

Book Review: Love On The Line

19 Oct

It’s a Battle of Wills … and Love Is on the Line!

Rural switchboard operator Georgie Gail is proud of her independence in a man’s world . . . which makes it twice as vexing when the telephone company sends a man to look over her shoulder.

Dashing Luke Palmer is more than he appears though. He’s a Texas Ranger working undercover to infiltrate a notorious gang of train robbers. Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do. But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

Deeanne Gist — known to her family, friends, and fans as Dee–has rocketed up the bestseller lists and captured readers everywhere with her very original, very fun historical & contemporary romances. Add to this three RITA nominations, two consecutive Christy Awards, rave reviews, and a growing loyal fan base, and you’ve got one recipe for success.

She has a very active online community on her website at IWantHerBook.com and at Facebook.com/DeesCircle.

My Impressions:

When I read an historical novel, I want to feel like I am actually living in the era that the story is set.  In Deeanne Gist’s newest novel, Love On The Line, I did!   Gist has written a fun and well-researched historical romance that will have you longing for the days of telephone party lines and strong, handsome lawmen not afraid to stand up for what is right.  Okay, maybe not party lines, but you will definitely enjoy the Texas Ranger Gist has brought to life.

Georgie Gail is a determined and passionate young woman — determined to make it on her own without help from a man and passionate about her hobby of bird watching.  She runs the switchboard in Brenham, Texas efficiently and confidently.  And even in the face of vocal opposition, she is not afraid to take on the cause of bird preservation. Lucious Landrum, aka Luke Palmer, is a bigger than life Texas Ranger who has been thwarted from getting his man too many times.  So he is undercover as a telephone troubleman in the hopes of bringing the Robin Hood-esque train robber, Frank Comer and his gang to justice.  But Frank didn’t count on a slip of a girl to reel in his heart.

Brenham Texas, circa 1903, comes to life in Love On The Line.  This reader felt like she was a part of this bustling town with its gun club, new ice cream parlor and struggle to be in on the trends and fashions of bigger cities.  Gist really pays attention to details in her characterization of Ranger Landrum, the newfangled telephone service and the use of bird parts in ladies fashions!    If you like an historical novel that is authentic and want some romance to go with it, be sure to pick up Love On The Line.  And although Lucious and Georgie’s story ends in this novel, I think there may be a good chance that Gist will revisit some of the other characters I grew to love.

Recommended.

Mailbox Monday

17 Oct

Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs.  Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists. Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia of A Girl and Her Books and is being hosted by Savvy Verse and Wit.

Here’s what I got this past week for review:

The Nine Lives of  Christmas by Sheila Roberts.  When a guy is in trouble, he starts making deals with his Creator…and Ambrose the cat is no exception. In danger of losing his ninth and final life, Ambrose makes a desperate plea.  He’ll do anything—anything!—if he can just survive and enjoy a nice long, final life. His prayer is answered when a stranger comes along and saves him, and now it looks like he has to hold up his end of the bargain.

The stranger turns out to be a fire fighter named Zach, the quintessential commitment- phobe who’s in need of some serious romantic help. If Ambrose can just bring Zach together with Merilee, the nice lady who works at Pet Palace, it’s bound to earn him a healthy ninth life.  Unfortunately for Ambrose, his mission is a lot harder than he ever anticipated.  Now it’s going to take all his feline wiles—and a healthy dose of Christmas magic—to bring them all together in time for the holidays.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Davis Bunn left for Europe at age twenty. There he first completed graduate studies in economics and finance, then began a business career that took him to over forty countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Davis came to faith at age 28, while living in Germany and running an international business advisory group. He started writing two weeks later. Since that moment, writing has remained both a passion and a calling.

Davis wrote for nine years and completed seven books before his first was accepted for publication. During that time, he continued to work full-time in his business career, travelling to two and sometimes three countries every week. His first published book, The Presence, was released in 1990 and became a national bestseller.

Honored with three Christy Awards for excellence in historical and suspense fiction, his bestsellers include The Great Divide, Winner Take All, The Meeting Place, The Warning, The Book of Hours, and The Quilt.

A sought-after speaker in the art of writing, Davis serves as Writer In Residence at Regent’s Park College, Oxford University.

My Impressions:

‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.’  Acts 2:17 (NIV)

In Davis Bunn’s newest book, God’s people are dreaming, but what they are experiencing is nightmarish — terrifying images that accost them night after night.  What can it all mean?  World acclaimed dream expert, Dr. Elena Burroughs is called to interpret the dreams and discovers what it means to follow God’s will.

Elena is a still grieving widow and clinical psychologist.  She sometimes wonders how she can help anyone when her own despair is still so fresh even after 5 years. Given a centuries old book by her mentor and friend, Elena is given the gift of seeing God’s plan in the dreams/nightmares of two politically connected people. What she finds is an interconnected web of deceit and greed and God’s plan to overcome it.  The backdrop of the story is a world teetering on the brink of another financial crisis involving the world’s most important financial institutions.  She and a group of previously influential politicians and advisors, now reduced to ridicule and impotence, struggle to fight the impending meltdown with the help of prayer and the mysterious Book of Dreams.

Davis Bunn has written a suspenseful novel filled with elusive villains, dangerous political fixers and greedy bankers.  A good read on this level becomes a great read when set amidst the framework of what it means to seek God’s will and to actually live it.  The characters are faced with discouragement and confusion when their efforts seem to fail.  But when they look to what God’s message to them really is, their efforts become not only meaningful but God-directed.

Davis Bunn always produces a wonderful story with believable characters, non-stop action and credible plot lines.  Book of Dreams is all that and a whole lot more.  It will cause you to really think about what God is telling you to do.

Highly Recommended.

Book Review: False Pretenses

15 Oct

Zoe Broussard loves her life. She owns a thriving Cajun eatery in South Louisiana and is married to the love of her life. One day, out of the blue, she receives a series of anonymous notes that sends her life into a tail spin. Five simple words, “I know what you did.”Unbeknownst to anyone, even Zoe’s husband, Pierce, she has a past—a past she had covered so well she never thought she would have to confront. How could anyone know what she did?

******************************

Suspense novelist Kathy Herman is very much at home in the Christian book industry, having worked five years on staff at the Christian Booksellers Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and eleven years at Better Books Christian Center in Tyler, Texas, as product buyer/manager for the children’s department, and eventually as director of human resources.

She has conducted numerous educational seminars on children’s books at CBA Conventions in the U.S. and Canada, served a preliminary judge for the Gold Medallion Book Awards of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association , and worked as an independent product/marketing consultant to the CBA market.

Since her first novel, Tested by Fire, debuted in 2001 as a CBA national bestseller, she’s added sixteen more titles to her credit, including four bestsellers: All Things Hidden, The Real Enemy, The Last Word, and The Right Call.

Kathy’s husband Paul is her manager and most ardent supporter, and the former manager of the LifeWay Christian Store in Tyler, Texas. They have three grown children, five almost-perfect grandchildren, a cat named Samantha. They enjoy cruising, deep sea fishing, and birdwatching—sometimes incorporating these hobbies into one big adventure.

My Impressions:

False Pretenses is the 1st book in Kathy Herman’s latest book series, Secrets of Roux River Bayou.  Kathy has again taken characters from another series (Sophie Trace Trilogy) and moved them into a new town.  This formula has worked well in the past and again is a sure thing to get new and old fans to read her books.  I first was introduced to Kathy Herman’s works in the Baxter series.  I moved on with Guy and Ellen Jones to the Seaport Suspense series and then on to Phantom Hollow with Ellen’s son and daughter-in-law.  I have not finished the Phantom Hollow series and have not read the Sophie Trace Trilogy at all, but that didn’t stop me from digging into False Pretenses.

Vanessa and Ethan have moved to the quaint Cajun town of Les Barbes to renovate the old family home that has been associated with secrets and ghost stories throughout the years.  They befriend landlords and restaurant owners Zoe and Pierce. Zoe has a few secrets of her own that someone is threatening to expose.

I enjoyed the south Louisiana setting with its regional cuisine and Cajun patois that Herman mixes in.  She again has a few characters that help root the story in the setting and provide background on the plot.  The novel  was fast-paced and suspenseful.  The characters’ emotions are real and there is a big surprise at the end.

My book club, By The Book, is set to discuss False Pretenses next week.  What are your opinions of the book?  We would love your input.

Author, Author!: Edna Ellison

12 Oct

A Passion for Purpose encourages women to live for God’s mission in all aspects of life, regardless of life situation—single, married, mother with children, widow, professional, or retired.

These missional thoughts, drawn from the five authors’ lives, challenge women to consider their communion with God, understanding of Scripture, worldview, relationships across cultures, the way they communicate Christ through their actions and words, their ministry, and their influence.

While at the ICRS in Atlanta last July, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Edna Ellison, author, speaker and Guru of Christian mentoring.  She has recently contributed to the devotional work, A Passion For Purpose.  Here are the highlights of our talk.

BTB:  How did you get started writing devotional works?

Edna:  Soon after the death of my husband, a friend of mine asked me to attend a writer’s conference at Ridgecrest.  She was an author, but I didn’t have any interest in that.  I just wanted to get away and get a tan!  I also didn’t know how I would possibly pay for such a trip, since I was a widow with limited resources and two children to raise.  I prayed about the trip and while cleaning out a foot locker my husband had owned I found an envelope labeled vacation with the exact amount of money I needed.  So I went!  When I arrived at Ridgecrest, I still was intent on getting my tan.   So for the first two days I sunned by the pool and didn’t attend any of the workshops.  On the third day, the gate to the pool was padlocked, so I just picked a workshop that seemed the most interesting.  I was in a class with other writers assigned to write a brief devotional based upon a news clipping.  As an English teacher and the advisor to the yearbook staff, I had been writing and editing short pieces for years, so the assignment came easily for me.  Following the class, the teacher asked me to write devotionals for her — she was an editor for Standard Publishing a big name in those days.  And so my career began.

BTB:  Where did your career go from there?

Edna:  I continued to write devotionals and the collection was published in a 365 day devotional book.  I had also met a man at the conference who mentioned my name to a woman who was looking for an editor for the Royal Service magazine (the magazine of the WMU).  She contacted me for an interview after my file kept flipping open!  I began work for the magazine and then went on to head California’s WMU.

BTB:  Tell me about A Passion For Purpose.

Edna:  While working in California, I was approached by a young woman who wanted me to mentor her.  She was very persistent and would not take no for an answer.  Tricia Scribner and I, along with 3 other women, eventually formed a group that has spoken to women’s groups around the country.  While we were in Myrtle Beach, we each shared the dream of writing a book together.  A Passion For Purpose grew out of that.

BTB:  Why mentoring?

Edna:  Everyone needs someone to help her to reach her goals.  I have a passion for mentoring and helping others establish mentoring relationships.

Edna had so many stories of God’s intervention in her life that raised chill bumps and brought tears to my eyes.  A big thank you to this wonderfully gracious woman for taking time to speak to me.

Edna Ellison is a well-known author and speaker from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dr. Ellison has been a keynote speaker in London, England; Frankfort, Germany; and cities in Panama and Honduras. She has spoken in Hawaii and Alaska, as well as most of our continental States.

Edna lives with her daughter, Patsy, and her husband, Tim Farmer. She also has a son, Jack, who lives with his wife, Wendy, and their daughter, Blakely, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Her life was featured in a Focus on the Family magazine, where she has also been published. After being widowed at a young age, Edna has been a national magazine editor, served as Executive Director of Women’s Ministries/Missions for the state of California, and has taught in seminaries and secular universities.

Known as “the guru of Christian mentoring,” Edna loves to lead prayer retreats and speak at women’s conferences. She has written two books on mentoring: Woman to Woman: Preparing Yourself to Mentor, and Seeking Wisdom, which are printed in English and Spanish. She wrote these Tricia Scribner, whom she mentored in writing. She has written Friendships of Faith (Hebrews), and Friendships of Purpose(Ephesians), along with her latest release, Deeper Still: A Women’s Study to a Deeper Walk with God. Edna’s latest books are available at Wal-Mart and your local book stores: Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul 2 (Edna’s story is the first in the book), and Chicken Soup for the Christian Sister’s Soul. Also at Wal-Mart are two small gift books: Soul Matters for Women and Hugs of Sunshine for Women.
