By The Book’s Pick

51AFBP+KzxL._SX327_BO1,204,203,200_If I Run by Terri Blackstock. Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they’ve failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.

But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up.

Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?

Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices: the girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.

Page Turners’ Pick

UnknownWater form My Heart by Charles Martin. Charlie Finn had to grow up fast, living alone by age sixteen. Highly intelligent, he earned a life-changing scholarship to Harvard, where he learned how to survive and thrive on the outskirts of privileged society. That skill served him well in the cutthroat business world, as it does in more lucrative but dangerous ventures he now operates off the coast of Miami. Charlie tries to separate relationships from work. But when his choices produce devastating consequences, he sets out to right wrongs, traveling to Central America where he will meet those who have paid for his actions, including a woman and her young daughter. Will their fated encounter present Charlie with a way to seek the redemption he thought was impossible–and free his heart to love one woman as he never knew he could?

Book Review: Song of Silence

2 May

Song-of-Silence-PK-248x384Music taught Lucy love and beauty. Could silence teach her hope?

Lucy and Charlie Tuttle agree on one thing: they’re committed to each other for life. Trouble is, neither of them expected life to look like this. Charlie retired early, but Lucy is devoted to a long-term career . . . until the day she has no choice.

Forced to retire from her position as music educator in a small Midwestern K-8 school, Lucy can only watch helplessly as the program her father started years ago disintegrates before her eyes. As the music fades and a chasm separates her form the passion of her heart, Lucy wonders if her faith’s song has gone silent, too. The musical score of her life seems to be missing all the notes.

When a simple misstep threatens to silence Lucy forever, a young boy and his soundless mother change the way she sees—and hears—everything.

CRuchti-354Cynthia Ruchti tells stories hemmed in hope. She’s the award-winning author of 17 books and a frequent speaker for women’s ministry events. She serves as the Professional Relations Liaison for American Christian Fiction Writers, where she helps retailers, libraries, and book clubs connect with the authors and books they love. She lives with her husband in Central Wisconsin.

My Impressions:

I have found that I have a harder time reviewing books that make the biggest impact. I feel inadequate to express the power and the beauty that an author has imbued in his/her work. Song of Silence by Cynthia Ruchti is one of those books. I loved this book, but more importantly, I connected with it. Characters, plot, themes — they all resonated with me. This is one that will stay with me a long time and is a highly recommended read.

Lucy Tuttle has been living her dream for 19 years — teaching music to children. But the dream abruptly comes to an end when she not only loses her job, but the school board shuts down all arts curriculum. Her summer stretches out in front of her without an end. Despite her husband’s sometimes clueless attempts to join him in retirement, Lucy slips deeper into her grief. A series of events lead her to a new understanding of God’s new song for her life.

Because I am struggling to find the right words to convey the essence of this book, I am just going to tell you why I loved it. Song of Silence has great characters — complex, believable, struggling with everyday issues that we can all relate to. I especially liked Lucy’s husband Charlie, referred to as Captain Oblivious in one instance. But before you think that there is some man-bashing in this book, let me say that he is one of the most caring, loving characters, even if he is not always the most observant. The themes are ones that we all deal with at some point in our lives — relationship dynamics, loss of dreams/purpose, disappointment and grief. God is present in the novel in the words of friends and trusted counselors, in the circumstances that almost overwhelm Lucy and in the silence in which she finds herself. Ruchti’s use of humor lightens the mood and brings real life into the pages.

Song of Silence is a great book, one that lingered in my mind long after I finished it. It spoke truth and it spoke hope. I loved it and think you will too.

Highly Recommended.

Lyons and Tim Warnes have created a sweet and relaxing padded cover board book that tells the story of God’s constant presence around you. Meant to be read at night, when a child is warm and snug in their bed, the rhyming text and adorable illustrations in God Is Watching Over You gently remind us that God is constantly watching over us, protecting us, and caring for us.

Patti Eubank’s expressive rhyming text is paired with her finely detailed illustrations to create a board book that is perfect for bedtime reading. It doesn’t get any sweeter than this! My Impressions:

The simple rhymes and cute and colorful illustrations will appeal to children as they explore the ways God wants them to treat others. I love that each story begins with a character sharing what the Bible has to say. While young children will learn real-life ways to show kindness, love, honesty, etc., their parents get insight on how toddlers think and act and tips to positively reinforce the lessons learned. Each story is accompanied by a short Bible verse — perfect for memorization. After all, it’s never too early to hide God’s word in your heart.

Each book is geared to a specific audience and provides all you need to begin the transformation from prayer wimp to prayer warrior! I loved the introduction to the books. Obviously written from his heart, Lucado shares the wonder, power and promises that prayer can provide if you access it everyday. Each book has 40 prayers accompanied by 40 scripture verses and is divided into helpful topics for each group. In Pocket Prayers for Friends the topics include Grace And Wisdom, Joy And Companionship, Help And Protection, Peace And Problem-Solving, Longevity And The Future and Love And Forgiveness. CgSRr88WsAA44P8.jpg-smallI have a new friend and sister-of-the-heart in Carol. We have had so much fun in the short time we have known each other and I hope the adventure continues for a long time! She got Pocket Prayers for Friends.

CgZobKdW8AUSxYQ.jpg-smallSoon to be graduate (and my soon to be daughter-in-love!), Brittany is a young woman with a bright future. I gave her Pocket Prayers for Graduates for the guidance she needs to transition from college to real life!

Collins is my niece’s husband. This policeman (the reason for no picture; he keeps a low profile when it comes to the internet) and father of a blended family has stress and pressures. But becaue of his dedication to being a godly father, I gave him Pocket Prayers for Dads.

Book Review: The Magnolia Duchess

27 Apr

UnknownFiona Lanier is the only woman in the tiny Gulf Coast settlement of Navy Cove. While her shipbuilding family races to fill the demand for American ships brought by the War of 1812, Fiona tries to rescue her brother who was forced into service by the British Navy.

Lieutenant Charlie Kincaid has been undercover for six months, obtaining information vital to the planned British invasion of New Orleans. When a summer storm south of Mobile Bay wrecks his ship and scatters the crew, Charlie suffers a head injury, ultimately collapsing in the arms of a beautiful mermaid who seems eerily familiar. As Charlie’s memory returns in agonizing jags and crashes, he and Fiona discover that falling in love may be as inevitable as the tide. But when political loyalties begin to collide, they’ll each have to decide where their true heart lies.

313204_b8f0fbd6de603d031772f89385f2f7f1-jpg_srz_p_268_398_75_22_0-50_1-20_0-00_jpg_srzAbout Beth White (from her website) — I grew up in the South, specifically North Mississippi, which has a rich tradition of fostering writers, storytellers, and musicians. I’m fond of both music and literature, so I amuse myself by teaching chorus and piano in an inner-city public high school by day, while conducting a secret life as a romance writer by night.

Anyway, I find myself, after more than half the years I’ve been alive, still married to my last college boyfriend. He still makes me laugh, he still gives me the warm fuzzies, and he still checks my tires, so I guess I’ll keep him. We somewhat successfully raised two young adults, who are both married and have begun producing amazing grandchildren. My cup runneth over.

My Impressions:

Beth White continues the saga of the Lanier family in her latest offering in the Gulf Coast Chronicles, The Magnolia Duchess. I have enjoyed learning more about this fascinating time and place in our nation’s history. With a mix of cultures, races and nationalities, independent and determined men and women shaped the region from Mobile to New Orleans. With meticulous research, a mix of historical and fictional characters and just the right amount of romance and intrigue, White deftly brings it all together. As delicious as gumbo, White’s books are perfect for those looking for historical romance. Reviews of the first two books in the series — The Pelican Bride and The Creole Princess.

While her family has sought to tame Fiona Lanier, much of their efforts have been in vain. Young Fiona is as spirited as the horses she trains. Charlie Kincaid is a British naval officer with a past, he just can’t remember it. When their paths cross again after years of being apart, sparks fly. But family loyalty and patriotism get in the way of their romance. Both are determined to risk all for love and country.

White’s scene setting is excellent. The reader gets a great sense of the Gulf Coast of 1814, especially Mobile and its environs. The author’s portrayal of the commerce, society and the military presence is spot on. The characters, too, are well-drawn. And while Fiona and Charlie are the focus, supporting characters and their story lines are interesting as well. Three romances flourish in The Magnolia Duchess — fans of the genre rejoice! My favorite part of the book is the dialog — a natural mix of teasing and flirting, but with a dose of serious conversation. There’s never a dull moment with Fiona and Charlie, so if you like a bit of adventure, suspense, and danger, this book will fit the bill. A faith message is naturally woven throughout the novel with characters seeking God’s presence and guidance.

A delightful addition to the series, The Magnolia Duchess is a recommended read.

Recommended.

Audience: older teens and adults.

Top 10 Tuesday: Bookworm Delights

26 Apr

It’s Tuesday — time for another Top 10 from The Broke And The Bookish. Today bloggers are talking about what delights their hearts and of course it’s all about books! Click HERE to find out what they find delightful.

toptentuesday

Call me a bookworm, a geek or nerd — I’m fine with that. I love books, books, and more books and all things that go along with them. My first inclination was to mention the bookish stuff that I delight in, but then I decided to go with those things that are definitely priceless. Here are the people, places and things that thrill my little book heart.

Top 7 Bookworm Delights

Book Buddies

Don’t you just love when your friends get your obsession healthy interest in books? My friend Carrie, a life member of the bookworm club, is someone I can talk books with for as long as we have time. Carrie and I seemingly have little in common — she is 20 years younger and her kids are in elementary school. But our mutual love of God and books has created a friendship I treasure. Ruth is my book co-conspirator. She is always up for a book adventure, whether a field trip to the site of our latest book club book or an author lecture/signing. She is also a spiritual rock when I waver. I am thankful for good friends whose eyes don’t glaze over when I start talking books.

about-me-photo-294x300I have two other book buddies that I have never met, at least in person. Carrie who blogs at Reading Is My Superpower and Carole who blogs at The Power of Words (is it a coincidence they both include power in their blog titles, I think not!) have become good friends through the magic photoof the interwebs. I love their insights, their passion and am thankful for the real friendship that we have developed.

Book Club

10941450_835574353167622_217806821708471398_nOh I love book club night! I belong to two book clubs — By The Book and Page Turners. Very different in the types of books we read, the two groups are made up of fellow bookworms who never tire of talking books. Through the years they have also become dear friends. While our meetings revolve around books, the real draw for me is the fellowship of women I care deeply for who in turn care for me. We have had so much fun laughing, crying and sharing. If you don’t already belong to a book club I heartily recommend it. The picture is of a combo of both my book clubs at an author meet and greet we hosted. Carrie is third from the left and Ruth is third from the right.

Book Events

logo-bookmarkBook signings, book luncheons, book conventions, book field trips — I’m there! I have had so much fun exploring the world outside my books. Both my book clubs have gone on field trips — St. Simons Island for Eugenia Price books, Atlanta for Elizabeth Musser books. We have hosted a number of authors for meet and greets (see above picture for the Tracy Groot meet and greet). I’ve also attended the ICRS as media (yes book bloggers are media!) and met some fabulous people. The last book event I attended was hosted by the Georgia Center for The Book. If you are within an easy drive of Atlanta, you need to check out their website for their wonderful book events.

Book Stores

198704_10150268726230784_8156091_nCan anyone have a list of bookworm delights without included book stores? I have an internal magnet that involuntarily draws me to any bookstore within walking distance. A vacation is really not complete without a visit to the local bookstore. In my second year of marriage we moved to a small town outside of Atlanta. I worked in a very small bookstore there — yeah, dream job! Earlene Scott was the go-to gal for books. Everyone visited Scott’s Bookstore to find their latest great read. She hosted big name authors too. Earlene’s store grew and grew until she relocated to a prime spot on the Square. Sadly, Scott’s closed a few years ago when Earlene retired. But I will always treasure the days I got to work there.

Book Swag

Cgbv4v9WQAIqTIS.jpg-smallI am a sucker for the swag that accompanies books — bookmarks, postcards, bookplates. Thanks to all the authors that provide these little gems! I recently received a book bag, bookmark and keychain from Rachel Dylan. So excited!

Bookmarks Magazine

logoEvery two months Bookmarks Magazine appears in my mailbox. It is a treasure trove of book info — best seller, recommendations, book club profiles, author spotlights, etc. I love this magazine! Check it out!

Fed Express, UPS, USPS

The men and women of these organizations are the unsung heroes of the book world. Why? Because they deliver books to my door almost daily! I get a little thrill of anticipation every time I see their trucks pull up to my door. Thanks for unselfishly delivering surprise packages! LOL!

Spotlight: The Africa Study Bible

25 Apr

AfricaStudyBibleCoverArt2I am excited to be part of the launch of the Africa Study Bible. Designed to bring study resources in a culturally relevant form to millions of people, this new Bible will speak truth to people just where they are in a language they can understand.

Hundreds of millions of Africans know and love Christ. However, most discipleship and biblical resources come from a Western perspective — a culture far removed from their own. Africa’s wonderful and rich influence on the early church from the Ethiopian eunuch through Augustine is being rekindled.

The Africa Study Bible bridges the gap of cultural understanding and Scriptural relevance by revealing the truth and beauty of God’s Word through African eyes.

With the launch of this study Bible, Africans will have a resource that speaks directly to their heart, relating the Bible to their everyday life.

Developed by Africans, the notes of the Africa Study Bible are “. . . bubbling up from underneath. The biblical truth is percolating through from the bottom to create a rich and textured tapestry that Africans can claim as their own” (Dr. John Jusu, Supervising Editor). Over 2,200 features speak truth with a uniquely African perspective. Written by more than 300 contributors from over 50 countries in four major languages, the Africa Study Bible may be the most ethnically diverse, one volume biblical resource to date.

While our goal is to eventually publish the Africa Study Bible (ASB) in all of Africa’s major languages, it will initially be published in English using the New Living Translation followed by French and Portuguese translations in the years to come. By printing in these three languages, the ASB will have its greatest impact, reaching up to 70% of literate African Christians.

We expect to launch this year in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. We have formed local African-led launch committees in each of these countries and are partnering with them to orchestrate all the details. We are all very excited and anxiously awaiting the arrival of the ASB. We continue to be encouraged by the anticipation of our African partners and you will be too as we share updates with you along the way.

We are so close to completing this project but need your help to launch the ASB in Africa! With your support, this life-transforming study Bible can be available to the millions of Christians who deeply desire to fully understand and apply God’s Word through the rich tapestry of their African culture and heritage.

Here’s what will be included:

ae55a46ddf7316cdda0baf39983a1130_original

  • Proverbs and Stories enlighten readers through the parallels of Scripture and cultural wisdom found in wise sayings and fables.
  • Learn Notes teach the foundations, values, and doctrine of the Christian faith.
