Audiobook Review: A Bridge Across The Ocean

23 Jul

Wartime intrigue spans the lives of three women — past and present — in this emotional novel from the acclaimed author of The Last Year of the War.

February, 1946. World War Two is over, but the recovery from the most intimate of its horrors has only just begun for Annaliese Lange, a German ballerina desperate to escape her past, and Simone Deveraux, the wronged daughter of a French Résistance spy.

Now the two women are joining hundreds of other European war brides aboard the renowned RMS Queen Mary to cross the Atlantic and be reunited with their American husbands. Their new lives in the United States brightly beckon until their tightly-held secrets are laid bare in their shared stateroom. When the voyage ends at New York Harbor, only one of them will disembark . . .

Present day. Facing a crossroads in her own life, Brette Caslake visits the famously haunted Queen Mary at the request of an old friend. What she finds will set her on a course to solve a seventy-year-old tragedy that will draw her into the heartaches and triumphs of the courageous war brides — and will ultimately lead her to reconsider what she has to sacrifice to achieve her own deepest longings.

My Impressions:

Susan Meissner is one of my must-read authors. Her books are skillfully crafted with complex characters and plots that speak to the heart. Unfortunately, I am woefully behind on reading her books. Determined to do better, I chose A Bridge Across The Ocean to accompany me on my morning walks. I should have known better. Instead of turning off the audiobook to continue my day, it remained on as I looked for chores that would allow me to keep listening. 😉 This novel, which has a dual timeline, would not let me go. If you are looking for an unputdownable read, then this one is for you!

The HMS Queen Mary is the link to the three stories that are presented in A Bridge Across The Ocean. Modern-day Brette sees ghosts or drifters as she calls them. She sees this as more of a curse than a gift and has endeavored to ignore the sight for much of her life. While doing a favor for a friend she is introduced to the tragic story of Anneliese Lange and is determined to discover the truth of the fateful war brides crossing. The reader is introduced to Anneliese, a German, and Simone, a Frenchwoman, long before Brette knows their names. Their stories run parallel during the days of WWII. I was drawn to each woman’s story. Heartbreaking and heroic both describe their experiences. There are also some ghosts we meet along the way. The first person voice of one in particular provided moving insight into the life of the Queen Mary cruise ship. While Meissner has written for the Christian fiction market in the past, A Bridge Across The Ocean is general market fiction. But the reader can definitely find a Christian worldview if she/he looks for it. The spirits Brette encounters are great metaphors for all the lost people we meet along the way — those looking for purpose or direction. Her gift of seeing and communicating with them sheds light on all the giftedness we possess and the ways we choose to utilize or ignore it. If you don’t mind the inclusion of ghosts, you will find a riveting story of grace. Specific to the audiobook: the narrator did an excellent job of portraying the many accents — French, American, Belgian, and German — of the characters.

A Bridge Across The Ocean is now my favorite book by Meissner. Really a hard feat since all her books are excellent. It gets the rare very highly recommended rating from me.

Very Highly Recommended.

Audience: adults.

Book Review: The Crushing Depths

21 Jul

When an accident claims the life of an oil-rig worker on the first drilling platform off the North Carolina coast, Coast Guard investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are sent to take the case. Tensions surrounding the oil rig are high and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the structure from being completed, while rumors are being whispered about ancient curses surrounding this part of the ocean.

Mounting evidence shows the death may not have been an accident at all. Was he killed by one of the activists or, perhaps more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only a plethora of suspects, but also their own past and attraction to each other.

Just as the case seems like it’ll break open, worse news arrives. A tropical storm has turned their way and soon they’re cut off from any rescue — and right where the killer wants them. It’s a race to discover his identity before he eliminates the threat they pose

Praised by New York Times best-selling author Dee Henderson as “a name to look for in romantic suspense,” Dani Pettrey has sold more than a half a million copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their “wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters” (Publishers Weekly), “gripping storyline[s],” (RT Book Reviews), and “sizzling undercurrent of romance” (USA Today).

Her Alaskan Courage series and Chesapeake Valor series have received praise from readers and critics alike and spent multiple months topping the CBA bestseller lists. Dani has also been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a Christy Award finalist, two National Readers’ Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing’s Best Award.

From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves — full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband. Their two daughters, a son-in-law, and two adorable grandsons also reside in Maryland. For more information about her novels, visit http://www.danipettrey.com.

My Impressions:

Fans of the first book in Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series will not be disappointed with her latest fast-paced, action-packed novel, The Crushing Depths. The ensemble cast is back with all their skills to get to the bottom of mysterious activity on an oil rig off the North Carolina Coast. While all your favorites make an appearance, most of the book focuses on Rissi and newcomer to the Coast Guard Investigative Service team, Mason. As their investigation intensifies, so does the chemistry between the two making this book a must-read for fans of romantic suspense.

A centuries old curse, modern drilling, and eco-activists set the stage for The Crushing Depths. The various threads serve to keep the investigators and the reader guessing. But the methodical and intuitive team is matchless in their dogged determination to find the truth. The ensemble cast Pettrey creates is varied and interesting. Their interactions and side plots also promise more intriguing cases and romance to come. Rissi and Mason get the spotlight though, and their history as teenagers gives them a great foundation for finding love as adults. While the plot kept me turning the pages and the romance was just right, I especially liked the setting of this book. I really want to head to the North Carolina coast now! Pettrey always infuses her novels with solid spiritual messages, and this book is no exception.

Great setting, page-turning plot, endearing characters, and sparks galore make The Crushing Depths a very enjoyable read! If this is your first introduction to this series, get books 1 and 2 and settle in for some fun!

First Line Friday — Don’t Keep Silent

17 Jul

Happy Friday! Today I am sharing from Don’t Keep Silent, the third book in Elizabeth Goddard‘s Uncommon Justice series. Goddard always takes readers on a fast-paced, twisting ride, and I am looking forward to digging into this book in the next few days. The cover also features a snowy scene, so I am hoping its descriptions will inspire cool thoughts as I endure sweltering reality. 😉 I am sharing the first line of Chapter 1 instead of the Prologue, since it introduces the reader to main character Rae Burke.

Dread warred with hope as Rae Burke shivered in the cold outside on the porch.

Investigative reporter Rae Burke will do anything to find her missing sister-in-law, even if it means facing Liam McKade, a man who almost lost his life saving hers. A former DEA agent, Liam thought he could find peace at his Wyoming ranch, but he just doesn’t feel at home anywhere anymore. When the reporter who blew his cover on an important investigation inserts herself back into his life, he’s less than thrilled. But Rae’s keen investigative skills have led her down the right path–and directly into the dragon’s mouth–leaving Liam no choice but to protect her. As the danger increases, the past they both tried to flee catches up to them, along with the feelings they once had for each other.

Bestselling and award-winning author Elizabeth Goddard plunges you into a fast-paced, high-stakes story of honor, forgiveness, and justice.

Book Review: Unveiled

16 Jul

The story of Tamar, book one in the popular Lineage of Grace series by the New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love and A Voice in the Wind

Betrayed by men who controlled her future, she fought for the right to believe in a loving God.

Meet Tamar, one of the five women in the lineage of Christ. She risked her life and her reputation to be the woman she was called to be. Her story serves as an example of how God uses our circumstances and our steps toward Him, however faltering, to fulfill His plan.

New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers continues to win both industry acclaim and reader loyalty around the globe. Her numerous bestsellers include Redeeming Love, A Voice in the Wind, and Bridge to Haven, and her work has been translated into more than thirty different languages. She is a member of Romance Writers of America’s coveted Hall of Fame as well as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW). Visit Francine online at http://www.francinerivers.com and connect with her on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/FrancineRivers) and Twitter (@FrancineRivers).

My Impressions:

My Bible study/book club, Faith And Fiction, chose Unveiled as an easy summer study. We spent 6 weeks studying the scripture guide at the end of the novella. The questions are easily accessible for all people at all stages in their faith journey. While not terribly in-depth, they did promote great conversations. I chose to do the study first, and then read the fictional account of Tamar and Judah so that I wouldn’t color my perception of the scripture. I did like Rivers’ take on Tamar and Judah. These two flawed characters were fleshed out realistically and credibly. I always have a lot of what-ifs about Biblical figures, and Unveiled helped me imagine the culture that the two were part of. It also fueled my imagination about Judah’s son Er’s wickedness. Rivers did a great job detailing all the possibilities with his personality and attitudes. Of course with Biblical fiction there is a lot of filling in the gaps, and Unveiled is no exception. But I did not find anything that was inconsistent with the Biblical record. A short and quick read (I read it in an afternoon), the novella and accompanying guide is a good place to begin exploring the women who are named in Jesus’ genealogy.

Children’s Corner — God Loves The Animals

15 Jul

Take a beautiful nature walk through Bear Country with the beloved Berenstain Bear family. Mama, Papa, Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear savor the great outdoors and greet all their animal friends.

This point-and-learn board book helps early readers learn animal words!

There’s a family of ducks nestled amongst the cattails, a horned owl perched in a tree, and a rabbit making trouble in a cabbage patch! And whether the animals have fur, feathers, or scales, God makes sure they have a place to live and food to eat.

As you read aloud, toddlers will delight in pointing out all the different creatures throughout Bear Country as they are comforted by the message of God’s boundless love.

My Impressions:

The Berenstain Bears are back with a cute board book that focuses on the animals in God’s creation — God Loves The Animals. Each page of this colorful book points to specific animals and their environment. I loved this! Kids learn that an alligator looks like a log and that a skunk and a possum live in a designed-just-for-them home. Besides the variety of animals that God has made, children can see the provision He has set up for each one. I predict God Loves The Animals will become a favorite for the whole family.

Recommended.

Audience: preschoolers.

This Book Is Making Me Hungry! The Lacemaker by Laura Frantz

13 Jul

Some books just make you hungry! Some for more from an author or genre. And some for the enticing food that has been described. The Lacemaker by Laura Frantz made me hungry for more of her books plus some of the Welsh bread that Noble Rynalt’s housekeeper served for breakfast and tea. Bara Brith or speckled bread is a traditional bread made in Wales. It is filled with raisins, hence the speckled name, and spices. As in the novel, it is served with butter. Below is the recipe from Allrecipes. I really need to make this one!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup hot brewed tea
  • ¾ cup dried currants
  • ¾ cup golden raisins
  • ¾ cup demerara sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups self-rising flour
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

  • Step 1

Pour hot tea over currants and raisins in a bowl; soak 8 hours to overnight.

  • Step 2

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  • Step 3

Grease a sheet of parchment paper and use it to line a 2-pound loaf pan.

  • Step 4

Stir demerara sugar into tea and fruit mixture until dissolved completely.

  • Step 5

Mix flour and egg into the tea and fruit mixture until completely integrated into a batter.

  • Step 6

Spread batter evenly into the prepared bread pan.

  • Step 7

Bake in preheated oven until golden-brown, about 40 minutes. Cool in the bread pan 5 minutes before transferring to a rack to cool completely.

No one comes to her aid save the Patriot Noble Rynallt, a man with formidable enemies of his own. Liberty is left with a terrible choice. Will the Virginia belle turned lacemaker side with the radical revolutionaries, or stay true to her English roots? And at what cost?

Historical romance favorite Laura Frantz is back with a suspenseful story of love, betrayal, and new beginnings. With her meticulous eye for detail and her knack for creating living, breathing characters, Frantz continues to enchant historical fiction readers who long to feel they are a part of the story.

Christy Award-winning author, Laura Frantz, is passionate about all things historical, particularly the 18th-century, and writes her manuscripts in longhand first. Her stories often incorporate Scottish themes that reflect her family heritage. She is a direct descendant of George Hume, Wedderburn Castle, Berwickshire, Scotland, who was exiled to the American colonies for his role in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, settled in Virginia, and is credited with teaching George Washington surveying in the years 1748-1750. Book Review: A Dream within A Dream

11 Jul

Trudi Coffey only realizes that she hasn’t seen Samuel Hill in weeks when the FBI shows up asking questions about him. After a strange encounter with an armed man demanding her help and an attack by a member of the Boston mob looking for someone named Dream, Trudi manages to find Samuel–or rather, he finds her. He’s made some pretty powerful enemies, but right now his full attention is on protecting Dream from the mob. Because Dream has something they want — the map to the location of artwork stolen from the Gardener Museum during the infamous 1990 heist.

With danger closing in from all sides, Trudi and Samuel will have to call on all of their allies to keep Dream safe and discover the identity of the people who have been hunting down Samuel. The real questions are whom can they trust? And who will make it out of this thing alive?

Mike Nappa is an entertainment journalist at FamilyFans.com, as well as a bestselling and award-winning author with more than one million books sold worldwide. When he was a kid, the stories of Edgar Allen Poe scared him silly. Today he owns everything Poe ever wrote. A former fiction acquisitions editor, Mike earned his MA in English literature and now writes full-time. He is the author of Annabel Lee and The Raven.

Melissa Kosci is a fourth-degree black belt in and certified instructor of Songahm Taekwondo. In her day job as a commercial property manager, she secretly notes personal quirks and funny situations, ready to tweak them into colorful additions for her books. She and Corey, her husband of twenty years, live in Florida, where they do their best not to melt in the sun.

My Impressions:

I have been waiting for another Coffey and Hill mystery for a while — a LONG while! Both Annnabel Lee and The Raven made my best of the best lists the year I read them. In A Dream within A Dream, Trudi and Samuel are back better than ever as they navigate the known and very much unknown of a twisting, turning case. If you like lots of action with your suspense, then this book is a must-read.

Main characters Trudi and Samuel have a lot of history between them, some of it great, some not so much. Ex-spouses, they have become friends despite the mistakes and betrayals between them. In A Dream within A Dream they are thrown together as multiple foes, new and old, attack. I really like Trudi and Samuel. They seem very real despite some their superhero-esque qualities. These two have skills! They are adept at reading people and situations, and their hand-to-hand combat is way above average. I suspect co-author Melissa Kosci had a lot to do with writing those scenes. As I said, there is a lot of action, but there is also a lot of intelligent planning as well. Smart moves keep the two alive. The book is told from multiple points of view — third person past tense for Trudi and Samuel and first person present for the other main character, Dream. Dream is a wounded character whose perceptions are tainted by trauma and blocked memories. But he is the key to everything. All seemingly unrelated threads trace back to him. This novel really made me think — a true puzzler. The settings of the novel are Boston and Atlanta. Atlanta is Trudi’s home base, and I enjoyed recognizing all the landmarks mentioned in the book. My son lives in the same neighborhood as Trudi’s office! The Boston setting was a treat as well, since it brought back memories of a fun weekend in that historic city. Book nerds will also like the references to Edgar Allen Poe and his works. The spiritual thread is very subtle, but powerful. I won’t go into the details — spoilers you know — but when you read it you will have a wow moment.

I loved A Dream within A Dream and look forward to more books in the series. There is a BIG twist at the end that better be addressed sooner rather than later! 😉

Highly Recommended.

Audience: adults.
