Storms didn’t usually bother her, in fact, she enjoyed watching them from the comfort of home. Yet this was far from enjoyable as she squinted in order to monitor every sightline in the wall of glass. Was her vivid imagination playing tricks? Tree branches swung low as the wind picked up. It could be a toy blowing across the patio. 

Eyes wide, she clutched her phone in both hands and clenched her jaw as another rumble of thunder sounded. Maybe I should check on Jack. He wasn’t crying, but he would be scared if he woke to this. Her limbs refused to move as she sat transfixed watching for movement outside.

 She could almost hear her own heartbeat. There. A huge shadow came into view, too dark to make out. Another flash, a scream—her scream—as the shape of a man was illuminated from behind. 

Rain-soaked, the figure stood and stared directly at her. Covered in a hooded oilskin coat, he was massive. She screamed again and he flinched. He pulled back his hood and leered.

“She left her purse behind?” Tony asked.

This land of 10,000 lakes is full of wildlife, like white-tail deer, majestic elk, and clever coyotes, foxes, and wolves. On rare occasions, mountain lions and black bears make appearances. Kennedy Hurlbert is a cheerful and creative teenager who inspired much of the SRG story and corrected all her dad’s teen lingo. She enjoys being with friends, whipping up sweet and tasty desserts, and spending time at the lake. Any lake. She loves lakes. Especially the Boundary Waters. But any lake will do. Adanne swallowed. How’d she go from a sleepy makeup artist to standing in as an extra? Most of the scenes were blocked before she finished applying the makeup. Surely someone else could do this with the stunt double instead of her standing in the last place she wanted to be . . . at the center of everyone’s attention.

Before she could come up with a better alternative, the stand-in sauntered out of an office building adjacent to the general store. Except, it wasn’t a double.

He approached her, adjusting the suspenders attached to his trousers as he listened to the production assistant who was walking beside him. Adanne blinked, swallowing down the bile rising in her throat. Surely the Lord would allow the Alabama clay to open and swallow her right up.
