Kylee crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m sorry my parenting skills aren’t on par with your expectations. I told you my only experience was with interns. Maybe if there were penalties for their behavior, they would follow orders.”
“What are you going to do? Fine them?” Evan quipped. He held firmly to Annabelle’s hand as she began to tug. “Demote them?”
“Funny,” snapped Kylee. “If Mia had—”
“You have no idea how Mia raised her children,” he said in a low tone. “You weren’t around, were you?”
“Well, I’m here now.” Kylee’s retort sounded confident and challenging, as lightning flashed in her eyes.
“I’m here to help, Kylee.”
“Why don’t you take them both home for lunch then, and I’ll be right behind you?”
“Fine,” said Evan. “I’m sure they would rather read anyway.”
“Enjoy your time with them. I’m going to get a cupcake.”
His time with them. If her plans to leave by Christmas were set, his time with them was running short.
