Manuel wasn’t about to tell her that the Jaguar Negro were known for intercepting cars right before reaching border crossings and that attempting to drive the whole way would practically guarantee another confrontation. She already looked worried enough. “Don’t worry. I have a plan.”
“There you go, telling me not to worry again.”
Manuel stood. “If you didn’t always look worried, I’d stop telling you that.”
She furrowed her brow, a little line creasing her otherwise smooth forehead.
“Trust me,” he said.
“You’ve been telling me that a lot too.”
Had he? “You can trust me.”
“It’s not like I have much choice.”
The resignation in her voice caused Manuel to hesitate. He was used to clients needing time to learn he was on their side, but he hated that Laura hadn’t truly let herself believe in him.

Traci Hunter Abramson was born in Arizona, where she lived until moving to Venezuela for a study abroad program. After graduating from Brigham Young University, she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, eventually resigning in order to raise her family. She credits the CIA with giving her a wealth of ideas as well as the skills needed to survive her children’s teenage years. She loves to travel and recently retired after twenty-six years coaching her local high school swim team.
