Happy Friday! This week I am featuring a book that recently made it to my house. I am a book club coordinator for two groups, and Bethany House is a fantastic resource for us. Through their book club program I periodically receive a copy of a fantastic book and accompanying material to make for a wonderful book club meeting. This week the mailman brought Whose Waves These Are by Amanda Dykes. A menu, discussion questions, and other goodies were included in my package. Thanks so much Bethany House! Have you read this book? Let me know what you think.
Please leave a comment with your first line and then head over to Hoarding Books for more fabulous first lines.
In the wake of WWII, a grieving fisherman submits a poem to a local newspaper: a rallying cry for hope, purpose . . . and rocks. Send me a rock for the person you lost, and I will build something life-giving. When the poem spreads farther than he ever intended, Robert Bliss’s humble words change the tide of a nation. Boxes of rocks inundate the tiny, coastal Maine town, and he sets his calloused hands to work, but the building halts when tragedy strikes.
Decades later, Annie Bliss is summoned back to Ansel-by-the-Sea when she learns her Great-Uncle Robert, the man who became her refuge during the hardest summer of her youth, is now the one in need of help. What she didn’t anticipate was finding a wall of heavy boxes hiding in his home. Long-ago memories of stone ruins on a nearby island trigger her curiosity, igniting a fire in her anthropologist soul to uncover answers.
She joins forces with the handsome and mysterious harbor postman, and all her hopes of mending the decades-old chasm in her family seem to point back to the ruins. But with Robert failing fast, her search for answers battles against time, a foe as relentless as the ever-crashing waves upon the sea.
Amanda Dykes is the author of Bespoke: A Tiny Christmas Tale, the critically-acclaimed bicycle story that invited readers together to fund bicycles for missionaries in Asia. A former English teacher, she has a soft spot for classic literature and happy endings. She is a drinker of tea, a dweller of Truth, and a spinner of hope-filled tales, grateful for the grace of a God who loves extravagantly.
Happy Friday! My first line is from “Kate’s Song” by Jennifer Beckstrand:
“Is he dead? Please tell me he’s not dead!”
Well, that is ominous!
That’s very cool that you get book club resources from Bethany House!
I’m currently reading Andrew by Jennifer Beckstrand and LOVING IT! I loved the first line of chapter three so I’ll share that line. ”Alfie Benaiah Petersheim, get that cat off my table!”
Hee hee!
I absolutely loved this book, it skyrocketed to the top of my all-time favorite list! I just loved the lyrical, poetic writing style of Amanda Dykes. I can’t wait to read more from her in the future!
Yay!! Great to hear it!
Well now I need to check this book out!! Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!
On my blog I’m sharing the first line from Underestimating Miss Cecelia by Carolyn Miller: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/07/18/first-line-friday-94/.
Today, I’m currently reading The Spice King by Elizabeth Camden. It’s an excellent story that I highly recommend! I’m just starting chapter 34, so I’ll share from there.
“Gray rarely took the time to read The Washington Post first thing in the morning.”
Hope you have an excellent weekend!!! 😀❤📚
🙂
This sounds so good. I just put it on my wish list.
I look forward to your thoughts when you read it.
A fabulous story there! Here’s the first line from my current read, Just One Kiss by Courtney Walsh: “Carly Collins hated running late.”
I fully expect Whose Waves are These to turn up on lots of award lists next year 🙂
I’m sharing the first line from Underestimating Miss Cecilia by Carolyn Miller on my blog today – it seems to be a popular choice!
I’m currently reading Fatal Strike by DiAnn Mills. Here’s the first line:
Special Agent Leah Riesel scanned the headlines on her phone.
That’s a little underwhelming, but the first chapter includes a shoot-out in a hostage situation, so it ramps up the action quickly.
Happy reading!
I have Fatal Strike coming later this summer. Looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.
Happy Friday! I’m looking forward to reading this so much! Since I’m sharing from chapter 1 of Yours Truly, Thomas by Rachel Fordham on my blog today, here is the first line from the prologue:
“After letting an involuntary squeal escape, Penny pulled the yellowed papers closer and pressed her lips to them.”
Have a wonderful weekend!
I’m hoping to get to this book this week!
Today on my blog I shared the first line from Storm Rising by Ronie Kendig but I’m currently reading Fragments of Fear by Carrie Stuart Parks so I’ll share the first line from my current chapter (8) here: “Marley was sitting by the door in the living room when Travis returned.” Hope you have a great weekend with plenty of reading time! 🙂
I will start Parks book next. I a excited!
I’ve heard great things about this book! I’m sharing on my blog the first line from At First Spark by Liwen Y. Ho.
Darren Spark never imagined that one person could make him feel so happy and sad all at the same time.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Absolutely loved Whose Waves These Are!
My first line is from The Crossing of Cypress Creek by Pam Hillman
Natchez Under-the-Hill on the Mississippi River, August 1792
Caleb O’Shea jerked awake to utter stillness.
