Book Review: Secrets of Harmony Grove

13 Jan

926256_w185Sienna Collins, owner of the Harmony Grove Bed & Breakfast in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, learns that she is under investigation by the federal government for crimes she knows nothing about. A few hours later she finds her ex-boyfriend, Troy, dead, and her life and livelihood begin to spin wildly out of control. She begins to doubt everyone around her, even the handsome detective assigned to the case.

As Sienna tries to clear her name, she is forced to depend on her faith, the wisdom of the Amish, and the insight of the man she has recently begun dating. She’ll need all the help she can get, because the secrets she uncovers in Harmony Grove end up threatening not just her bed-and-breakfast, but also her credibility, her beliefs, and ultimately her life.

mindy-starns-clark-2013Mindy Starns Clark is the bestselling author of the Million Dollar Mysteries series and the Smart Chick Mystery series, as well as the nonfiction how-to guide The House That Cleans Itself. My Impressions:

Mindy Starns Clark has always been my go-to author for good Christian mysteries. Also a favorite of my book club, By The Book, we chose Secrets of Harmony Grove for our January meeting. A twisting mystery, I think most will enjoy how Clark has woven the past into the present with this novel set in Amish country in Pennsylvania. Not an Amish novel, per se, it does include Amish characters and the bucolic setting of Lancaster.

The action revolves around Sienna Collins’ B&B, a profitable business that Sienna has entrusted to the capable hands of her manager, Floyd. But when her ex-boyfriend is killed and Floyd and a local woman are attacked by a fire-breathing  creature, Sienna is determined to get to the bottom of what is going on. The adjacent grove, an obsession of her deceased grandfather, seems to be at the center of the mystery and is the object of much of Sienna’s investigation.

Secrets of Harmony Grove is fast-paced. The mystery is interesting, although some of the elements are a bit far-fetched. I found Sienna’s character exasperating. For such a successful and determined woman, she sure is irresponsible. Other characters are not really well-developed. The blending of the family history and the present mystery is definitely the strength of this book.  Of all of Starns books, this is my least favorite.

I would start with her Million Dollar Mystery series or her two mysteries set in Louisiana. Under A Cajun Moon is good.
