Book Review: Merry Ex-mas

14 Nov

Cass Wilkes, owner of the Gingerbread Haus bakery, was looking forward to her daughter Danielle’s wedding—until Dani announced that she wants her father, Cass’s ex, to walk her down the aisle. Seriously? Even worse, it appears that he, his trophy wife and their yappy little dog will be staying with Cass….

Her friend Charlene Albach arrives at their weekly chick-flick night in shock. She’s just seen the ghost of Christmas past: her ex-husband, Richard, who left a year ago when he ran off with the hostess from her restaurant, Zelda’s. Now the hostess is history and he wants to kiss and make up. Hide the mistletoe!

And bring out the hot buttered rum, because the holidays aren’t easy for Ella O’Brien, either. Ella, newly divorced, is still sharing the house with her ex while they wait for the place to sell. The love is gone. Isn’t it?

But watch as Christmas brings all kinds of surprises….

Merry Ex-mas, ladies!

Sheila Roberts lives in the Pacific Northwest. She’s happily married and has three children. Her books have been printed in several different languages and have been chosen for book clubs such as Doubleday as well as for Readers Digest Condensed books. Her best-selling novel ON STRIKE FOR CHRISTMAS was made into a movie and appeared on the Lifetime Movie Network. Her novel ANGEL LANE was named one of Amazon’s Top Ten Romances for 2009.

When she’s not making public appearances or playing with her friends, she can be found writing about those things near and dear to women’s hearts: family, friends, and chocolate.

Her latest book is Merry Ex-Mas.

My Impressions:

Merry Ex-Mas is the newest holiday novel from Sheila Roberts. Three women in Icicle Falls, WA are having the Christmas blues due to their ex-husbands. Cass’s daughter is getting married, and she is expected to host her ex and his new wife in her home for the wedding. Charley’s philandering husband comes back looking to reconcile, and Charley is tempted. And Ella is still living with her ex while trying to sell their house. She is having doubts about the divorce, but her mother assures her she made the best decision of her life when she divorced her husband. So the busy, harried holidays become even more frenzied for these 3 small town business women! But they will all get through the season with a little help from their friends and chocolate!

If you like chick lit and/or holiday fiction, you are going to like Merry Ex-Mas. The book is a quick read, featuring witty dialogue and humorous situations. (Please note this is not a Christian novel. There is some profanity and adult situations). I have to admit the descriptions of bakery owner Cass’s confections got my mouth watering too. Luckily there are some recipes at the end of the book! Some of the plot lines were resolved, but others were left open, signaling more fun in the sequel coming next Spring. There is actually a first book in the series (Better Than Chocolate) that I have not read, but I would like to. The women in these books are so much fun and the support they have for each other, including their advice, is wonderful. So if you are looking for a lot of fun and a little bit of poignant, pick up Roberts’ Merry Ex-Mas.
