The Deliverer picks up just months after Special Delivery leaves off, continuing with the stories of Mara, freed from slavery but still struggling with scars and memories from the past; Jonathan, attending Bible college but strongly drawn to Mara, despite her past; and Lawan, having escaped the brothel in Thailand and miraculously reunited with her younger sister in the US and adopted by the same family. Will Mara be able to move past the pain and hatred that bind her, even if it means traveling back to the place where her parents betrayed her and sold her into sexual slavery? Will she allow The Deliverer to set her free—once and for all?

My Impressions:
The Deliverer is a satisfying conclusion to Kathi Macias’ Freedom Series. Because it is the third installment in the series and not a standalone novel, I highly recommend that you first read the first two books in the series — Deliver Me From Evil and Special Delivery. Believe me, you will not want to miss any part of this wonderful series.
The Deliverer picks up the stories of two young women that have been brutalized by human trafficking — one in Thailand and one in the United States. Their stories are heartbreaking and almost unbelievable. But only almost, because human trafficking is only too real across the world and in our own backyards. But their lives, which could have remained hopeless and desperate, are redeemed by the help and love of other people and ultimately through the love of God. Told primarily through the inner voices of the characters, The Deliverer details the guilt and shame that victims of sin go through. It was this perspective that gave a deepness to Mara and Lawan’s stories. And as always, Kathi Macias reinforces the importance of prayer in our relationship and restoration with God. The inner thoughts of other characters are shared as well, and we see that our thought lives are just as important as our actions.
Most of the story lines are concluded, but Macias leaves enough undone to keep the reader wondering — a great technique to keep the reader thinking and the discussions going. Overall, I would recommend the entire Freedom series, especially for discussion groups. It will open your eyes and your heart to the plight of those in chains everywhere.
Highly Recommended.
