Kick Chaos out the Door with a Smart Daily Routine
By Renee Metzler
Have you ever heard someone say in disgust, “My home is such a mess”? When our homes are in chaos, we can feel really overwhelmed. The dishes are piled high. The laundry is scattered. Projects from last week still sit on the table. And somehow, this feels like our home is the culprit. I don’t know about you, but at times like this, I would rather go shopping, just to “get away”.
The truth is that my home didn’t make the mess, my family and I did. When I first began to research smarter ways to manage a home, I realized that there are two kinds of home managers, reactive and proactive.
- The reactive home manager chases the mess. “I need to cook dinner; I better wash the dishes first so we can eat.” Or, “I don’t have anything to wear. I guess I’ll go around the house and pick up all the dirty, scattered laundry and do some wash.” Can you see how this is reactive?
- The proactive home manager attacks the mess before it happens. “The family and I will all fill the dishwasher after dinner for clean dishes next time.” Or, “When we walk in the door, we all take a moment to put our coats on hangers.” Can you see how little pro-active actions can add up to a big orderly result?
When I first took home management seriously, I knew I needed to move out of the realm of reactive and into the realm of proactive. The easiest way to kick chaos out the door is to implement a Smart Daily Routine today. In my book, Total Home Makeover, (http://ambassador-international.com/books/total-home-makeover) I describe the Smart Daily Routine.
“These simple routines are like a road map to blissful home order. There are certain tasks that must be done every day to keep your home running smoothly. When you put these tasks into a smart daily routine, you can avoid the frustrations of reactive home management, and you will enjoy the environment of an orderly home” (Total Home Makeover, page 31-32).
Here’s a Simple Evening Routine you can begin to follow today.
- Return to a tidy home.
- Prepare dinner and eat.
- Family clears dishes and fills dishwasher. Run.
- Attack laundry, again (fold and put away).
- Mail, papers, phone calls.
- Family Chore Time.
- Bed Time.
