Book Review: Little Shepherd

18 Nov

Obed is in the hills outside Bethlehem when the angels appear to announce the Savior’s birth. Can he trust that the miracle of the first Christmas will keep his flock safe while he visits the newborn King?

My Impressions:

Little Shepherd is a retelling of the story from Luke 2:8-20 — the angel appearing to the shepherds proclaiming Christ’s birth.  But what makes this story different is that it is told from the perspective of 5-year old shepherd Obed.

Children and their parents can learn several lessons from this simple children’s story.  First no matter how small, all family members can have a part in the life of the family.  Obed is a very young boy with a very grown-up job (at least by modern-day standards).  Yet he takes it seriously and wants to do his best. Even small children can be trusted with chores around the house — picking up, sorting laundry, pet care, etc.

But a greater lesson is learned by Obed and the reader.  Obed is astonished that his father leaves the flock unattended to search out the stable where the Savior is said to be.  Yet his father assures him all will be well.  When he returns to the field, Obed finds the unharmed sheep right where he left them.  This brought to my mind Matthew 6:33 — no matter your concerns, worries or obligations, if you seek God first, He’ll take care of the rest.

This colorfully illustrated story is sure to be come a Christmas favorite with both children ages 4-8 and their parents.

Highly Recommended.
