Forbidden romance, an unlikely martyr, and an even more unlikely hero. Orphaned four years earlier when their parents, active in the African National Congress ANC movement against Apartheid, were murdered, 16-year-old Chioma and her 15-year-old brother Masozi now live and work on an Afrikaner family’s farm. When Chioma and Andrew, the farm owner’s son, find themselves attracted to one another, tragedy revisits their lives. Chioma escapes to join an ANC rebel band in her effort to survive and gain revenge for her family and culture. When cultures clash in life-or-death struggles, Chioma must choose between violence and revenge or forgiveness and selfless love. Loosely based on historical events and set near Pretoria, South Africa, in the violent upheaval prior to ANC leader Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 and his ascendance to the presidency of South Africa, this story of forbidden romance produces an unlikely martyr who is replaced by one even more unlikely.
![]() My Impressions Apartheid was the legal and devastating policy of South Africa from 1948 to 1994. The races were kept strictly separate by a program of forced removal from homes and cities of those designated Blacks and Coloreds. The minority White race, as it was legally described, successfully ruled and subjugated a majority of the population. It should be no surprise that the majority resorted to terrorism to overthrow an unjust government. The last days of apartheid are described in Kathi Macias’ new book No Greater Love, book 1 in the Extreme Devotion series published by New Hope Publishers (a division of WMU). Macias brings to life the fear, mistrust and hatred between the races during this terrible time in South African history. The main character, Chioma, struggles with the need for revenge for her parents and brother’s deaths at the hands of white devils and the knowledge of the love and sacrifice of her baas’ son, Andrew. She desperately holds on to her need for vengeance to make sense of her life. But when faced with the truth of God’s love and sacrifice, she can no longer ignore His call to her heart. This book is not an easy read. It is filled with violent images and evil actions. However, it is true to its subject. The story of God’s love transcends events, making this book a testament to God’s power in individuals’ lives. Highly Recommended. To purchase this book, click here.
