I was born in Philadelphia in 1957 (guys don’t care if you know) to a mostly blue-collar, hard-working Irish family. My Dad was the first person on either side of the family to earn a college degree. It took him nine years, working during the day, going to college at night, using the GI Bill from his war days in Korea. In the mid-sixties, General Electric hired him as an engineer for the Apollo space program. We packed up and moved to Florida, which is really where I grew up.
I spent my childhood years playing basketball and surfing. In the spring of my senior year in high school I met the woman who would become my wife, Cindi. We dated for a brief period. I asked her to marry me and, to my great surprise, she said yes. We were married near the end of 1976. We have two children, now grown.

The Discovery by Dan Walsh is By The Book’s October selection. It was chosen as a replacement for another book on our schedule that was available in only limited quantities. I basically chose it because I had picked it up at the ICRS and it looked good. Well, a second choice replacement quickly became a stellar pick in my opinion. I am so glad that I chose this book!
Michael Warner’s grandfather, an award-winning novelist, has just passed away leaving his family with wonderful memories filled with love. But Gerard Warner was something of an enigma, even to his family. He has never shared stories of his childhood or even of how he and his beloved Mary met. The family has always accepted this, except for Michael’s sister Marilyn who has all kinds of theories. Now, Michael and wife Jenn have inherited his grandfather’s home and perhaps a key to the secrets long held by Gerard.
Told as a story within a story, The Discovery is a romantic trip back in time to WWII Florida. The manuscript Michael finds is a compelling love story filled with suspenseful twists and turns. Being a Florida native, I loved the local color of Daytona Beach of the 1940s. The novel also brings out the little known facts of Nazi spies landing in the US as well as the U-boats that patrolled the waters of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. If you like Nicholas Sparks, you will love Dan Walsh’s The Discovery. This is a wonderful love story of second chances and faithful love.
