Book Review: Catie’s Secret

13 Nov

HiResCover.jpgCatie-Small-e1380604414500Catie Caterpillar looks different from any bug Herbie and Bella have ever seen. When Herbie makes fun of Catie, Mayor Benny shows him why he should not judge anyone by how they look. In the end, Catie reveals a secret and the bunnies learn the joy of forgiveness.

Catie’s Secret is the second book in Laura Allen Nonemaker’s children’s series, God’s Secret Garden Adventures. Like the previous book, Benny’s Angel, Catie’s Secret invites young readers to join an exciting adventure while it teaches a valuable lesson.

LNonemaker-189Laura Allen Nonemaker began writing as a child in Bermuda when a favorite teacher had one of her essays published in a local newspaper. She is a contributing writer for Kentucky Monthly Magazine and her first children’s book, Benny’s Angel, was published in 2011. She is on the planning team for Artful Missions, which produces juried art shows and donates most of the proceeds to ministries that help women and children escape human trafficking. When Laura is not dreaming up her next God’s Garden adventure, she enjoys spending time with her large family.

My Impressions:

Looking for a colorfully illustrated and cleverly written book for a new reader? Then consider Catie’s Secret by Laura Allen Nonemaker. Your child or grandchild will learn along with Bennie Bunny the secret that lies within all of God’s creation — beauty, uniqueness and worth based upon the Creator Himself. Included are some fun facts and discussion questions to help dig a little deeper into what God wants for us.

Recommended.

Book Review: Life with Lily

3 Oct

Book 1 in the ‘Adventures of Lily Lapp’ series.

Lily is six in this story, just starting first grade in a one-room schoolhouse in upstate New York. Her parents are busy building a farm, and soon animals join the family—Jenny the cow and Chubby the miniature horse. A baby brother arrives, too, which Lily has mixed feelings about. (She wanted a sister!) Aside from a mischievous friend like Mandy Mast, Lily is happy at school and even happier at home. Trouble is brewing at the schoolhouse and change is on the horizon for Lily and her family.

Suzanne Woods Fisher lives with her family in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has one husband, four children, one son-in-law, a brand new grand-baby, and a couple of dogs. She graduated from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Suzanne has contracts with Revell for six more books about the Amish, both fiction and non-fiction. She is also the host of “Amish Wisdom·” on toginet.com, a weekly radio program featuring guests who are connected to Simple Living.

My Impressions:

I love Suzanne Woods Fisher’s adult novels set among Amish communities. They are never stereotypical, always relatable. Now she has joined with Mary Ann Kinsinger (who grew up Old Order Amish and writes the blog A Joyful Chaos detailing her journey from Amish childhood to her present life) to bring to life the Amish for young readers. Life with Lily is a delightful look at growing up Amish from the perspective of Lily Lapp, a 6 year old who finds wonder and fun in the world around her. I love this idea — a look at a very different culture in a very positive way. Lily’s observations of the mysteries of adults, the complications of friendships and the many changes facing her ring so true — they are universal whether you are growing up Amish or not. The relationships between the Amish and the English are natural. And I learned a few new things as well. I would recommend this to any young girl. In fact, my own little friend Lily (who looks a lot like the Lily on the cover of the book) will be getting this book on Thursday. I look forward to her thoughts on Life with Lily as well.

Highly Recommended.
