Children’s Corner — Noah And The Noisy Ark

7 Jun

It’s time for Noah’s big adventure! A rainstorm is coming, and Noah needs to build an ark and find two of each animal to keep warm and dry inside. This retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark will take little ones from building a big boat to seeing a rainbow in the sky after the storm. Featuring brand-new art from the beloved The Beginner’s Bible, a die-cut format, and a beautiful foiled cover, parents will love sharing this board book with their children.

My Impressions:

In Noah And The Noisy Ark, a favorite Bible story is told in a simple manner for the smallest of readers. And because it is part of the Beginner’s Bible series, parents can be assured that God’s word is faithfully followed. Colorful illustrations portray the days of Noah — the disobedience of the people and the faithfulness of Noah. This book is a sturdy board book with a built in handle so that your child can carry it around the house or on car trips. Expect this one to be read over and over! But isn’t that great? Instilling God’s word, plan, and promises in even the tiniest of hearts!

Audience: children ages 2-5.

The Little Bible Heroes Flip Over Book, Miriam/Daniel, is perfect to encourage your child in reading while introducing them to God’s word. With stories written for boys and girls, this book provides complex sentence structure and varied vocabulary to sharpen your child’s comprehension skills. There are discussion questions at the end to further conversation about how God works in people’s lives and scripture to reiterate His promises. I liked that Miriam and Daniel were portrayed as ordinary children who were obedient to God — readers can really relate! Cute and colorful illustrations are a big plus as well. I think this book is a good choice for young elementary aged children to read on their own or for family read-alongs.

My Impressions:

Two stories taken from the popular NIV Adventure Bible are available individually to help your child progress in his/her reading skills. Facing The Blazing Furnace and Joseph The Dreamer are well-loved stories from the Old Testament. In these retellings targeted toward developing readers, the emphasis is on God’s provision and faithfulness even in times of trial and temptation. Both books have colorful and detailed illustrations that support the narrative. I think these books are especially good for young boys. I know that when my boys were young, practicing reading was way down on their list of things to do. But both of these books show young men of faith who impacted their world for God. So if you are looking for books that will keep your young reader interested, bolster their knowledge of the Bible and encourage their faith, while sharpening their skills, check out both of these title.

Children’s Corner: Countdown to Christmas

19 Nov

51ZrQJzjpoL._SY407_BO1,204,203,200_During the weeks before Christmas, Christian families prepare to remember the birth of Jesus. As they do, family traditions fall into place, and children get very excited about the celebration to come. Countdown to Christmas: 24 Days of the Jesse Tree Tradition allows your family to take time to know the people in the Bible and to see their connection to Jesus. To begin the tradition, set up a small 2′ – 3′ high tree in your home and read one story every night in the days before Christmas. After each story, hang an ornament to remember the biblical figures, starting with Adam and Eve and ending with Jesus. Night by night, children learn that Jesus had a family just like they do. This beautifully illustrated book will help you establish a cherished holiday tradition with your own family. Countdown to Christmas: 24 Days of the Jesse Tree Tradition includes a complete set of Jesse Tree ornaments on heavy card stock paper. Each ornament features a color illustration to match individual stories in the book. Punch out the corresponding ornament after you read each story, add a ribbon or string, and hang it on a small Christmas tree.

716frLh2P1L._UX250_(From the author’s Amazon page) — My name is Theresa Seidlitz, and I am the author of Countdown to Christmas: 24 days of the Jesse Tree Tradition. I am eleven-years-old, and I am part of a big family. There’s Gabriel, John, Paul, Peter, Anna, and Mom and Dad . . . seven of us all together.

I love writing! I guess the reason I like to write so much is that it gives me a chance to be creative and use my imagination. I really enjoy telling stories. Right now, I’m working on a funny book about the crazy stories of some fifth graders.

I also like to read. I probably love Archie Comics the most, although I really enjoyed a mystery book I read a few months ago called The Ring of McAllister. I also recently read The Giver, by Lois Lowry. It’s a good book, but it was very sad.

I wrote the book about the Jesse Tree partly because I wanted to see what it would be like to be an author and write a whole book! I also wanted people to know about Jesus’ family tree. I hope the book will make the Christmas season even more exciting for kids as they count down the days to Jesus’ birthday.

My Impressions:

Wow! What a terrific way to teach about God during the celebration of Christmas. Instead of an Advent calendar, consider using Countdown to Christmas: 24 Days of The Jesee Tree Tradition for a new and exciting family tradition. Twenty-four stories beginning with Adam and Eve and ending with the birth of Jesus tell the story of God’s plan for his people. Each story is simply written and is perfect for a joint family read-along. Instructions are given to create a family devotion and worship time each day. Small ornaments are also included to decorate a small tree focused on God rather than presents or Santa. Drawn from the eleven year old author’s (yes eleven!) own experiences celebrating with her family, this book will help families slow down and draw attention to the real reason for the season!

Children’s Corner: The Good Samaritan

7 Oct

UnknownEver wonder why they called him the “Good” Samaritan? Find out why in this level 2 I Can Read, written in the tradition of the popular Adventure Bible.

Jewish people and the Samaritans were enemies … they would never have considered helping one another. So what happens when a Jew is robbed, and left on the side of the road to die? Who stops to help? Read as Jesus tells a remarkable story about a man who serves his neighbor as God would want. Perfect for beginning readers ages 4-8, learning Bible stories on their own.

Born and raised in Michigan, David Miles spent his childhood sloshing through creek beds, climbing trees, and creating numerous baked goods. That spirit of adventure and curiosity often finds its way into his illustrations through quirky characters and hidden surprises. After spending a decade in Philadelphia and New York pursuing his artistic dreams, David has moved back to the familiar surroundings of Michigan. Now, when he’s not drawing and painting he still enjoys a good romp through the woods.

My Impressions:

For early readers, the I Can Read! series is always a good choice. The latest in this series, The Good Samaritan, takes its story and illustrations from The Adventure Bible. Geared towards developing readers, this book combines challenging sentences and vocabulary and gets kids reading Bible stories for themselves. What a great accomplishment! I really like this series and wish it had been around when my kids were learning to read.

Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton’s first published work was a note passed to a boy in elementary school. You would have thought that this most embarrassing moment would have stopped her writing career. But instead, Laurie is the author of thirty five books and author/illustrator of two more. Laurie lives in rural Ohio with her husband and two daughters and loves writing surrounded by horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and five turkeys.

My Impressions:

I am so impressed with Believe Storybook that Zonderkidz has published. This beautifully illustrated book brings the Old and New Testament together to explain to kids (and adults) just what and why Christians believe. Divided into 3 sections (Think, Act and Be Like Jesus) with a total of 30 chapters, this book explores the key beliefs of the Christian faith through questions, Bible stories and commentary. Each chapter begins with a a Key Question, such as Who is God? The narrative then includes an Old and New Testament story illustrating the idea. A Jump to Jesus transition between stories shows kids how the Bible fits together. The chapter ends with The Jesus Answer — a reiteration of the Key Question with Jesus as its focus. A Key Verse allows for Scripture memorization, an important part of knowing just what and why you believe.

I wish I had had Believe Storybook when my kids were younger — it is an informative and entertaining way to teach your kids about God. And in this world where Christian beliefs are under attack, parents need all the help they can get!

Highly Recommended.
